Background

Kamerun was colonised by Germany, but it was seized from Germany after World War 1 and divided between Britain and France.

The British governed the English speaking part of Cameroon with Nigeria till independence in 1960. A referendum was held in 1961 and parts of English speaking Cameroon chose to join the French speaking part, while part chose to unite with Nigeria.

However, in the early 2000s, some people in the English speaking part of Cameroon declared that the referendum was a mistake and they now want to join Nigeria. They claimed that they were being oppressed by the French speaking part of Cameroon. The Nigerian Government ignored them, so they decided that they wanted to be independent. They call their proposed country Ambazonia.

Things escalated in the 2010s when the Cameroonian Government began cracking down on separatists. The separatist activists were using Nigeria as a base until 2018 when their leader, Sisiku Julius Ayuk Tabe was arrested by the SSS in Abuja and deported to Cameroon, where the government placed him under arrest.

Amabazonian fighters began attacking government facilities in Cameroon and the Cameroonian Government shutdown the Internet in the English-speaking part of the country in 2018.

Amabazonian fighters signed an agreement with Ipob and they launched attacks in border areas of English speaking Cameroon and Nigeria.

Ambazonian activists have also staged protests at football matches between Nigeria and Cameroon (that were hosted by Nigeria).

Both the Ambazonian fighters and the Cameroonian Military have been accused of severe human rights abuses. A BBC investigation found evidence that Cameroonian soldiers killed unarmed civilians, including women and children. There's a video online of Ambazonian fighters attacking a secondary school and stripping the students naked because they disobeyed the order to sit at home.

It is believed that Eric Fru Nji (a Cameroonian) was trying to smuggle weapons to the Ambazonians through Nigeria.

Management apologises as hackers upload porn videos on Babcock University website

The management of Babcock University has apologised for the porn videos uploaded on its official website.

The university’s Director of Communication and Marketing, Joshua Suleiman, clarified in a statement Wednesday that the school’s University Information Management System (UIMS) Account was hacked on Tuesday.

He said following the development an “unwarranted and unsolicited digital communication was posted on the website”.

The Seventh Day Adventist institution has been trending on social media since the early hours of Tuesday over the pornography video on its Website.

“We never voluntarily, either by omission or commission, sent out such information to anyone, so we are sorry if it made a wrong impression. Rest assured, we have secured our network already,” Mr Suleiman said.

In 2019, the school also came under attack on social media over a viral sex tape of two people rumoured to be students of the school.

The institution later announced that it has expelled the young lady in the viral sex video and maintained that the act did not take place on its premises.

Hacking is evolving

Mr Suleimon also noted in the statement that cyber risks have not been easy to phase out.

“We have always recognised that constant vigilance is required to protect against intrusions because of our understanding that even the most diligent cybersecurity efforts have not been able to address all cyber risks that organisations face.

“This is why, unfortunately, malicious attacks and intrusion efforts are continuous and evolving, and in certain cases, they have been successful at the most robust institutions.

He said the university remains “committed to our godly values, and we will neither fail nor falter in this regard”.

He urged the public to notify them should they continue to get strange messages from the website.

U.S. Attorney’s Office
District of Maryland

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Tuesday, March 21, 2023

Maryland Resident Sentenced to Over Five Years in Federal Prison for Illegally Transporting Firearms with Obliterated Serial Numbers and Smuggling Firearms to Nigeria

Baltimore, Maryland – U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett today sentenced Eric Fru Nji, age 42, of Fort Washington, Maryland, to 63 months in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release, for conspiracy, for transporting firearms with obliterated serial numbers, and for smuggling firearms and ammunition from the United States to Nigeria. Judge Bennett also ordered Nji to pay a fine of $25,000. Nji was convicted of those charges on May 6, 2022, along with co-defendants Wilson Nuyila Tita, age 47, of Owings Mills, Maryland and Wilson Che Fonguh, age 41, of Bowie, Maryland, after a two-week trial.

The sentence was announced by Erek L. Barron, United States Attorney for the District of Maryland; Special Agent in Charge James C. Harris of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Baltimore; and Special Agent in Charge Toni M. Crosby of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Baltimore Field Division.

According to the evidence presented at trial, from at least November 2017 through July 19, 2019, Nji and his co-defendants conspired with each other and with others to export firearms, ammunition and other military typed items from the United States to Nigeria. Specifically, the evidence at trial established that Nji and his co-conspirators secreted 38 firearms, 28 of which had the obliterated serial numbers in a shipping container that they sent out of the Port of Baltimore in January of 2019. The guns included sniper rifles, SKS assault rifles (some with bayonets), other rifles and several handguns. There were 44 high-capacity magazines, two rifle scopes and over 35,000 rounds of ammunition. As detailed in trial testimony, Nji and his co-conspirators contributed funds for the purchase of firearms, ammunition, reloading materials and other equipment for shipping overseas to separatists fighting against the Government of Cameroon. The evidence proved that Nji and his co-conspirators concealed the firearms, ammunition, rifle scopes, and other items in duffle bags and heavily wrapped packages inside sealed compressor units, placing those items into a shipping container destined for Nigeria. Nji and his co-conspirators communicated about their efforts and plans to ship weapons and ammunitions using an on-line encrypted messaging application and code words in order to conceal their activities.

Fonguh, Tita and seven defendants charged in related cases are awaiting sentencing.

United States Attorney Erek L. Barron commended HSI and the ATF for their work in the investigation. Mr. Barron recognized the U.S. Department of Commerce, Office of Export Enforcement; U.S. Department of State Diplomatic Security Service; Department of Defense Office of Inspector General, Defense Criminal Investigative Service; the Naval Criminal Investigative Service; and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for their contributions to the investigation. U.S. Attorney Barron thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathleen O. Gavin, who is prosecuting the case.
