Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority LAMATA @Lamataonline

Green Line on Track

Following the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in China for the construction of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Green Line, the Lagos State Government made a significant move today for the commencement of its development.

The government conducted a site visit to advance the realization of the Green Line rail project.

A delegation comprising representatives from the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Federal Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), China Harbour Point, Nexant Consulting, and Advanced Engineering Consultants (AEC) participated in the inspection.

The primary objective of the site visit was to familiarize the construction company with the project's right of way.

This information will be crucial for completing their comprehensive feasibility study and subsequently determining the most optimal approach for constructing the Green Line.

The Green Line rail project, spanning a total of 67 kilometers, is envisioned in two phases.

The initial phase will cover 33 kilometers, terminating at Omu Creek in Sangotedo.

The site visit was hosted by LAMATA and included key personnel such as Engr. Olasukanmi Okusaga, Director of Rail Transport at LAMATA, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works & Infrastructure, Engr. Lateef Somide, CEO of AEC, a consulting firm, Dr. Abiola Agunbiade, and Paula Faniran, Head of Strategic Projects at MOFI.

This significant step marks a crucial milestone in the realization of the Green Line rail project, which promises to transform Lagos' transportation landscape and provide a more efficient and sustainable commuting option for its residents.

Dangote‘s first sea cargo of petrol arrives Lagos as key refinery ramps up

Our Reporter
October 26, 2024

Nigeria’s Dangote refinery, larger than any other in Africa or Europe, has shipped its first seaborne petrol cargo as a vital fuel-producing unit continues to ramp up.

The Sabaek sailed with about 500,000 barrels of petrol from Dangote to the nearby commercial hub of Lagos in recent days, according to a port report and ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg.

Meanwhile, the refinery’s residue fluid catalytic cracker, a crucial unit in the production of the fuel, is continuing to ramp up output, according to a person familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named discussing private information.
Spokespeople for Dangote didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Once fully operational, the 650,000-barrel-a-day plant will transform the regional gasoline market, potentially reducing the need for imports of the fuel from Europe to West Africa. It has already shaken up crude oil flows by trimming an overhang of Nigerian supply.

This first shipment via sea comes about one month after the new refinery began using trucks to transport petrol.

A refinery’s RFCC unit helps upgrade petroleum products into more valuable fuels like gasoline.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has so far received four cargoes of crude oil from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited under the naira-for-crude sale agreement.

It was gathered that the four cargoes of crude were delivered to the refinery within the past three weeks when the government began the sale of crude to local refineries in the local currency.

Officials said that the refinery was still waiting to receive more crude oil cargoes from NNPCL, the organisation managing the country’s hydrocarbon resources.
They also confirmed that the $20bn Lekki-based plant was now set to begin the direct sale of refined Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, to domestic dealers.

A source close to the Technical Subcommittee on Domestic Sale of Crude Oil in Local Currency, who did not want to be mentioned because he was not permitted to speak with the press, confirmed to The PUNCH that “more cargoes (of crude) would be delivered to the Dangote refinery in the coming weeks.”

The official disclosed that the programme started with the Dangote refinery as the only petrol-producing facility in Nigeria at the moment.

This is why I refuse to waste my time by arguing with some people. Time will always prove that what I say is true and that time has come.

1) I said that goods will be moved from the Lekki Free Zone to other parts of Nigeria, indeed to other parts of Lagos via the waterways. Governor Fashola had said so when the zone was under construction.

Well, Dangote has started moving product from the Lekki Free Zone to Apapa by sea.

2) I said that the Lagos-Calabar rail line would pass through Lekki Free Zone and that goods would be moved by rail.

Well, construction work has begun on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the rail line will run alongside the highway.

3) I said that human traffic would be moved to and from the Free Zone by the Lagos Green Line.

Well, preliminary work has begun on the Green Line.

4) I said that goods that are moved by road will be moved through the Epe-Ijebu-Ode Road.

Well, Governor Dapo Abiodun has reconstructed the Ogun end of the road (Governor Ambode had previously reconstructed the Lagos end of the road).

5) I have not heard much about the Araromi (Ondo) - Lekki Road, probably because Governor Akeredolu died, but I'm sure that it will be constructed.

6) And goods will also be barged across the Lagos Lagoon as I said.

This isn't about making meaningless noise on the internet, it's about facts and things have happened just as I said that they would.

Claim and counter claim.

Fox News edited Trump’s rambling answers and false claims in barbershop interview, full video shows

By Brian Stelter and Liam Reilly, CNN
Thu October 24, 2024

New York
CNN
—
The Fox News Channel’s recent segment about Donald Trump’s “surprise” visit to a barbershop in the Bronx resembled a campaign ad for the former president’s reelection.

Trump was seen taking questions and making small talk with Black and Hispanic barbershop customers and workers, some of whom were wearing “Make Barbers Great Again” shirts. The visit was part of “Fox & Friends” co-host Lawrence Jones’ ongoing barbershop interview series.

But the version of the visit shown on television was, to borrow a hairstyle metaphor, a crop cut. Fox edited out many of Trump’s rambling comments and false claims. Participants had to repeatedly follow up when Trump meandered away from the original point of their questions.

CNN reviewed a more complete video of the barbershop visit that was uploaded to Instagram on the day of Trump’s appearance in the Bronx and compared it to the segments that were shown on “Fox & Friends” on Monday.

Fox’s edits omitted numerous Trump tangents and exaggerations – a striking decision given Trump’s recent attacks on CBS newsmagazine “60 Minutes” for editing an interview with his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, earlier this month.

Trump’s complaints about “60 Minutes” center on an edit of Harris’ comment about the relationship between Israel and the United States. He has charged that CBS manipulated the Harris interview to “make her look better” and demanded that CBS release the unedited transcript of the interview, which CBS has declined to do.

Ironically, however, Fox edited several of Trump’s recent appearances on the network, including his visit to the barbershop. And some of the edits certainly make him look better.

The televised broadcast omitted Trump’s comments about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. He told the barbershop customers that “they just dumped 50,000 people — 32,000 migrants from another country — in Springfield, Ohio. They don’t know what to do.” The actual number of migrants in Springfield is far lower, according to the city’s own data. The broadcast also left out Trump’s gross exaggerations about crime in Aurora, Colorado.

One of the most telling parts of the dialogue began when an audience member asked Trump about finding a way to eliminate federal taxes in the future. On Fox, Trump was shown immediately answering affirmatively: “There is a way.”

But that response from Trump actually came more than seven minutes later, after Trump (and Jones) brought up other topics, including inheritances, the Keystone Pipeline, Ronald Reagan, Russia, and transgender sports players. Trump had to be nudged back on track several times by the unnamed audience member, who kept circling back, apologetically, and said “I wasn’t able to finish my question.” After he repeated his tax inquiry yet again, Trump said “there is a way.”

But on Fox, it was stitched together as one seamless back-and-forth.

Fox also cut some of the former president’s insults, as when he mocked the Wall Street Journal, a sister property of Fox. “Don’t listen” to the “Wall Street jerks or Wall Street Journal, cause they don’t get it,” Trump told the barbershop audience.

In another unplayed portion of the visit, Trump praised Hungarian strongman Viktor Orban and called him a “very respected guy.” That exchange underscored Trump’s tendency to favor autocratic leaders, but Fox decided not to share it with viewers.

A Fox News spokeswoman said every one of Jones’ barbershop segments are pretaped and edited. The Bronx edition ran for nearly an hour and was cut for time and clarity, the network said.

Trump’s recent appearance on the Fox News program “MediaBuzz” was also pretaped and edited. One obvious edit occurred when Trump began to repeat his false claims about the 2020 election – a sensitive subject for Fox since the network is still dealing with defamation lawsuits relating to its coverage in 2020.

“They came down to protest a rigged election,” Trump said, referring to January 6. Then there was a sudden cut, suggesting that some of Trump’s distortions were removed.

Summary

Kamala Harris was interviewed on 60 Minutes, CBS News' most popular programme.

Donald Trump claims that the interview was edited to make Kamala Harris look good. He says that she gave a rambling answer to a question, but CBS cut out the answer and put her answer to another question in its place. He says that this is illegal election interference and manipulation.

CBS said that they edited the interview because of time. They wanted to create more time to accomodate her answer to a question.

Kamala Harris supporters say that Fox News also edited one of Trump's interviews in order to make him look good. They say that Fox removed a rambling answer from the interview.

Donald Trump also criticised the fact that the show is called 60 Minutes, but the Kamala Harris interview only lasted 20 minutes.

Trump sues CBS News over 60 Minutes interview with Harris; network says suit is "completely without merit"

Former President Donald Trump has sued CBS News, alleging the network's "deceitful" editing of a recent 60 Minutes interview with Vice President Kamala Harris misled the public and unfairly disadvantaged him.

In a statement released Thursday, CBS News called the former president's claims "completely without merit" and said the network intended to vigorously defend against the lawsuit.

The lawsuit, which comes just days before the two candidates face off in the 2024 presidential election, centers on two clips of an October interview 60 Minutes conducted with Harris. One of the clips was edited to include a longer section of her response to a question about the conflict in the Middle East. Trump's lawsuit contends this editing decision was meant to intentionally assist his opponent and mislead the public, something CBS News has disputed.

"To paper over Kamala's 'word salad' weakness, CBS used its national platform on 60 Minutes to cross the line from the exercise of judgment in reporting to deceitful, deceptive manipulation of news," the lawsuit claims. The suit says the former president seeks a jury trial and at least $10 billion in damages.

"Former President Trump's repeated claims against 60 Minutes are false," the network statement says. "The Interview was not doctored."

Trump's legal complaint was filed Thursday in federal court in the Northern District of Texas Amarillo division, a remote venue where the lone judge is a 2019 Trump appointee. Republican-led states and special interest groups have directed at least 14 politically sensitive cases to that court since January 2021, according to progressive watchdog group Accountable.US.

The lawsuit does not claim Trump was defamed by the network, said Geoffrey R. Stone, a First Amendment scholar and law professor at the University of Chicago, who reviewed the complaint. Instead, the suit attempts a novel use of a Texas statute that is meant to prevent advertisers from misleading the public about a product being sold — the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Consumer Protection Act.

Stone called it a "misapplication" of the law.

"That statute is about sales — a salesperson can be held liable for stating that a product has certain positive effects when he knows it doesn't," Stone said. "But CBS is not engaged in advertising here."

Harvard Law Professor Noah Feldman, a constitutional law expert, said he was mystified by the Trump claims and called the case an "outrageous violation of First Amendment principles."

"This is a complaint so ill grounded that it comes close to being sanctionable as frivolous," Feldman said.

The former president has for weeks been voicing his displeasure about the interview on the campaign trail.

"Millions of Americans, including residents of Texas and this District, were confused and misled by the two doctored Interview versions," the suit alleges.

In an earlier statement released by 60 Minutes, the network explained the two clips were edited differently because one segment, which appeared on "Face the Nation," afforded more time to accommodate a longer section of Harris's answer.

"Same question. Same answer. But a different portion of the response," the Oct. 20 statement from 60 Minutes said. "When we edit any interview, whether a politician, an athlete, or movie star, we strive to be clear, accurate and on point. The portion of her answer on 60 Minutes was more succinct, which allows time for other subjects in a wide ranging 21-minute-long segment."

Trump had been invited to sit for his own interview on 60 Minutes but declined.

The former president has previously filed several lawsuits against media organizations, including a March defamation case against ABC News over a question asked by anchor George Stephanopoulos during an interview.

He has lost prior defamation lawsuits against CNN, The Washington Post and The New York Times.

Elon Musk ordered to attend court over US voter cash giveaways

Ana Faguy
BBC News, Washington DC

Elon Musk has been ordered to attend a court hearing on Thursday, days after the billionaire was sued by prosecutors in Philadelphia over his $1m (£770,000) giveaways to voters.

The Donald Trump supporter has, through his political group America PAC, been offering cash prizes to registered voters in swing states who sign a petition.

US officials suggest this may break electoral law - something Musk denies. Philadelphia District Attorney Lawrence Krasner said Musk "must be stopped, immediately, before the upcoming presidential election".

CNN reports that Musk has filed a "motion of removal" to move the matter from the state's hands to a federal judge, which could delay matters.

The Philadelphia court hearing is scheduled to start at 10:00 EST (14:00 GMT), according to the BBC's US partner, CBS News.

Court documents show that Judge Angelo Foglietta of the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas said that "all parties must be present at the time of the hearing".

Musk announced earlier this month that he would randomly award a $1m prize to people in battleground states - Pennsylvania, Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan and North Carolina - every day until 5 November.

These swing states suggest a particularly close contest between Trump and his Democratic rival for president, Kamala Harris.

To be eligible to win, the giveaway requires registered voters to release personal identifying information, like addresses and phone numbers. They are also required to sign a pledge that says they support the US Constitution.

The lawsuit filed against Musk claimed he was "running an illegal lottery".

“America PAC and Musk are lulling Philadelphia citizens... to give up their personal identifying information and make a political pledge in exchange for the chance to win $1 million,” Mr Krasner said in the lawsuit. "That is a lottery. And it is indisputably an unlawful lottery."

The lawsuit also accuses the Tesla co-founder of violating consumer protection laws by using "deceptive, vague or misleading statements" that could create confusion.

But Musk's lawyers have argued otherwise.

"The complaint, in truth, has little to do with state-law claims of nuisance and consumer protection," Musk’s lawyers wrote in federal filings, according to the CNN report.

"Rather, although disguised as state law claims, the complaint’s focus is to prevent defendants’ purported ‘interference’ with the forthcoming federal presidential election by any means."

If the matter does move to the federal court, the case would move out of the Philadelphia judge's hands.

The BBC reached out to Mr Krasner for comment.

Before the case was filed, Musk's PAC was also warned by the US justice department that its lottery-style giveaway might violate federal election law.

The BBC has previously reached out to America PAC for comment.

Under US law, it is illegal to pay people to register to vote. But legal experts have told the BBC that whether the giveaway violates federal law is a grey area.

Musk himself, who has been aggressively campaigning for Trump, has insisted voters who want to be eligible for the prizes do not need to register as Republicans or go ahead with casting a vote.

Summary.

A district attorney sued Elon Musk at a local court over his million dollar giveaway. The DA said that the giveaway was an illegal lottery and constituted interference in an election. The judge had ordered that all parties should appear in court.

However, Mr Musk's lawyers approached a federal court and asked it to take over jurisdiction from the local court. That's probably why he did not appear at the local court hearing.

Elon Musk doesn't show at Philadelphia hearing over super PAC's $1 million lottery for voters

By Joe Brandt, Josh Sanders
Updated on: October 31, 2024

Despite a judge's order that "all parties must be present," Tesla founder, X owner and billionaire Elon Musk did not appear in a Philadelphia courtroom Thursday after District Attorney Larry Krasner sued him over his super PAC's plan to award $1 million a day to voters in key battleground states in the 2024 election.

Krasner and members of his office joined attorneys for Musk in Judge Angelo Foglietta's civil courtroom at City Hall for a hearing Thursday at 10 a.m. ET.

Musk's attorneys filed documents Wednesday night in the U.S. District Court in Philadelphia, a federal court, requesting the matter be moved to their jurisdiction – and out of the local Court of Common Pleas. A judge granted that transfer.

Attorneys for Krasner said they would contest that recommendation.

"We will proceed to federal court and seek to address the issues there and have them addressed in state court. This is a case that addresses state law issues, and I'll leave it at that," said attorney John Summers.

Musk, who has campaigned with former President Donald Trump, has donated tens of millions of dollars to America PAC, a super PAC formed this summer to support the Republican candidate.

The lottery award goes to signers of a petition asking voters to support free speech and the right to bear arms. According to the super PAC's website, at least 12 people have received $1 million awards, including four from Pennsylvania.

"The Philadelphia District Attorney is charged with protecting the public from public nuisances and unfair trade practices, including illegal lotteries. The DA is also charged with protecting the public from interference with the integrity of elections," Krasner said in a statement after the civil suit was announced.

Days before Krasner filed the suit, the Justice Department sent a letter to the super PAC warning that it may be violating federal laws about paying voters.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

WAFU B U-20: Flying Eagles Beat Ghana to Retain Title

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have won this year’s WAFU Zone B championship after defeating Ghana 2-1 in the final on Wednesday.

This means the Flying Eagles have retained the WAFU Zone B title which they won in 2022.

A brace from Kparobo Arierhi was enough to earn coach Aliyu Suberu’s men the trophy.

Arierhi opened the scoring in the 33rd minute before getting on the score sheet again to double the lead.

Ghana pulled a goal back in the 74th minute but the Flying Eagles held on to emerge champions.

After losing 1-0 to Burkina Faso in their opening game, the Nigerian team beat Cote d’Ivoire 2-1 to progress into the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, the team came from a goal down to beat Niger Republic.

Meanwhile, the Flying Eagles and Ghana have both qualified for the 2025 U-20 AFCON tournament.

'Helping a human is better than scoring a goal' - Adebayor

Emmanuel Adebayor's goal celebration for Manchester City in front of Arsenal fans caused controversy in 2009

Piers Edwards
Football writer
24 October 2024

After a career spanning two decades which saw him represent some of the world's biggest clubs, Emmanuel Adebayor will mark the end of his playing days with a testimonial in Togo on Sunday.

Legendary names of both African and European football, including Samuel Eto’o, Jay-Jay Okocha and the Toure brothers, will be in Lome for a weekend of celebrations for a man who helped his West African nation to its first, and to date only, Fifa World Cup appearance.

Adebayor now wants to help the next generation in his homeland accomplish more, motivated by both his own childhood and the horrific 2010 gun attack on the Togo team.

"It's now I realise that helping a human being is even better than scoring a beautiful goal in the Premier League or Champions League," the 40-year-old said.

In an exclusive interview with BBC Sport Africa, the striker reflects on the key moments of his career.

Fuelled by football

For the first few years of his life, Adebayor’s parents were troubled by his inability to walk, despite being otherwise healthy.

Still only crawling when he was five, his family found their way to spiritual leaders in neighbouring Ghana, who insisted the problem could be fixed through intense prayer.

One Sunday, a football from a nearby game bounced into the church where pastors were praying over the young Adebayor.

"As soon as I saw the ball, I started running to it," he said.

"It was a moment of deliverance, with everybody shouting 'He's walking, he's walking!'. Everybody was so happy and whenever my mother told that story, she always cried."

An indelible relationship with the sport had begun.

Adebayor scored 62 goals in 142 appearances for Arsenal, with his form seeing him named African Player of the Year for 2008

After being plucked from Togo by French club Metz, Adebayor spent nearly three seasons at Monaco before joining Arsenal in January 2006.

Nearly 20 years on, he calls the move the second favourite moment of his career.

"My idol was Nwankwo Kanu so signing for Arsenal - wearing his number 25 jersey and using the same locker as him - is, for me, a huge accomplishment," he said.

"Today, he is my big brother, my best friend and advises me if I'm doing right or wrong."

Adebayor’s form with the Gunners in 2008 played a major part in him becoming the first – and only – Togolese to be crowned African Footballer of the Year.

"In 2008, I was unplayable," he said.

"To be recognised as Africa's best player was huge - it is something I will never forget and never take for granted."

Yet his relationship with the north London club soured after he moved to Manchester City and ran the length of the pitch to celebrate a goal in front of Arsenal fans in 2009.

Adebayor apologised afterwards, saying the "emotion took over" him, and was later fined £25,000 ($32,300) and handed a two-match ban

A piece of World Cup history

Adebayor's Togo were beaten by South Korea, Switzerland and France at the 2006 World Cup finals

The same year as his move to Highbury, Togo made their only World Cup appearance – becoming Africa's smallest nation to contest the finals.

Adebayor scored an unsurpassed 11 goals in qualifying as the Sparrowhawks finished above 2002 World Cup quarter-finalists Senegal.

"Even today, we the actors try to explain it to ourselves but cannot," he said.

"We really don’t know what happened in those years, and what gave us the confidence to be as strong as we were. It was unbelievable."

Nigerian coach Stephen Keshi oversaw Togo's qualification but was replaced before the World Cup after a poor 2006 Africa Cup of Nations, marked by a spectacular falling out with Adebayor.

Togo's campaign in Germany was one to forget, with the side losing every game and threatening a boycott in a bonus row, but simply reaching the tournament was a huge feat.

Terror attack trauma

After missing out on the 2008 Nations Cup, returning at the 2010 edition should have been a dream.

Instead, it was an unimaginable nightmare.

On 8 January 2010, Togo's team bus was attacked by separatist rebels as it travelled through the enclave of Cabinda in host nation Angola.

The Togolese delegation was targeted by gunfire for over half an hour, leaving two dead and a host of unwanted memories for those who survived.

"Sometimes you can be in your home cinema watching a movie, or somewhere when somebody drops something – which has that similar sound to gunshot – and you remember what happened in 2010," Adebayor said.

"I’m a big fan of action movies. I still watch them but it’s difficult.

"Sometimes you see people shooting a bus and it takes you straight back."

Hitting the highs with Real and Sherwood

Despite spells across Europe and a brief stint in Paraguay, Togo’s record scorer won just one trophy – the Copa del Rey with Real Madrid in 2011.

That triumph was achieved by a star-studded side including Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored the winner against Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona.

"There is a video out there of me dancing in the dressing room with Pepe and Sergio," Adebayor said.

"Some players who don't have half of my talent have won a World Cup, but my target is not to regret.

"I'm happy about my career. If I was asked to do it one more time, I would."

Adebayor played under Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho and Didier Deschamps among others, but says it was a manager with the briefest of careers who got the best out of him.

Adebayor maintains regular contact with Tim Sherwood, who managed him at Tottenham

Andre Villas-Boas had frozen Adebayor out at Tottenham but Tim Sherwood brought him back into the fold when he took charge in in December 2013.

"The first meeting (Sherwood) had with the first team, he said 'My talisman will be Emmanuel Adebayor, everything will go through Adebayor. Penalty taker – Adebayor'," the striker recalls.

On his first club start in seven months, he scored against West Ham in Sherwood's first game to begin a run of 11 goals in 14 matches.

"After the game, we had a one-hour phone call where he told me how brilliant I was, how he counted on me and that no matter what happened he was 100% behind me," he said.

"When your boss is telling you that, the rest is easy. Up until today, we still chat. That's beautiful."

Making an impact in Togo

Adebayor was hailed as "Togo's only hope" by fans attending an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in 2012

Since quitting football, Adebayor has invested most of his time on the SEA (Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor) Foundation he set up just over a decade ago.

His inspiration came from his own experience of having to drop out of school when his parents could not afford the fees (roughly $25 or £19 per term) and by the attack in Angola which made him realise "anything can stop at any given moment".

With the United Nations and French Development Agency among its partners, the foundation sponsors hundreds of children to improve in areas ranging from STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to agricultural entrepreneurship.

"When you impact on somebody’s life, it's not just one person’s life - it's a generation's life," Adebayor said.

"This person will talk to his kid, his kid will talk to his grandkid and so on. So, for me, this is limitless."

There are even plans for an Emmanuel Adebayor University in Togo as this one-time controversial figure plans to impact his country's society the same way he did its football.
