Edo Court acquits DHL franchise operator, Omokide The Edo State High Court sitting in Benin City has absolved the head of DHL in Benin City, Mr. Nuhu Omokide of any complicity in a missing parcel said to have originated from Benin City and destined for the United Kingdom which the receiver claimed she did not get. The High Court, presided by Justice E. G. Adekanmbi said the decision by His Worship Afe Osamudiamen, Chief Magistrate Grade II was not in line with the laws guiding the five count charges against Okokide. In the suit marked B/10CA/2025 between Nuhu Omokide as Appellant and Commissioner of Police as Respondent, Justice Adekanmbi said the petition written by the nominal complainant was against DHL which is a legal entity but that “There is no law that makes individuals in the company liable for the company’s actions or inactions unless those individuals perpetrated crimes hiding under the corporate veil.” Besides, he said the records from the lower court did not show that any specific acts of a criminal nature were proved against the appellant to warrant his conviction adding that the appellant is a staff of DHL whose responsibility starts and ends as the Manager of the Benin branch of DHL. The judge said the record also showed that the appellant presented tracking records of the company which indicated that the parcel in question left the Benin office of the company and as such was not with the appellant. He said the lower court also erred when it concluded that the appellant appropriated the items listed in the parcel which were said to be school certificates and documents relating to the receiver’s profession because the appellant could not explain the whereabouts of the documents “In our adversarial system of adjudication, it is never the responsibility of the Defendant to prove his innocence. It was the prosecution who had the unmistakable onus to prove that the Appellant stole or converted the credentials to his own use instead of delivering them.” The judge ruled that “the trial court only made out the case of a missing parcel of documents which was the responsibility of DHL to deliver to the addressee in the United Kingdom. There was no scintilla of evidence in proof of personal negligence on the part of the Appellant as the reason for the loss of the parcel. “The prosecution failed to prove the Counts 1-5 beyond reasonable doubt. “On the whole, this appeal succeeds and I hereby grant the following orders; an order setting aside the judgment of the trial Court and the conviction and sentence of the Appellant contained therein. “An order Discharging and Acquitting the Appellant; an order that the N250,000.00 (Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira of fine paid by the Appellant be refunded back to him (Appellant).” |

"I have spoken with the mothers of our communities whose children were born without a functioning hospital within reach. "I have heard the anguish of our youth, brilliant, capable, hungry for opportunity, who see a future they want but cannot yet touch it. "I nave also walked the roads of our land and felt the weight of what decades of inadequate representation have done to our people. "I have heard every voice and today, i answer, not just with words, but with a renewed commitment to follow the path of growth, service, and transformation as exemplified by our Governor, and to ensure that the people of Ikom/Boki are not left behind in this new era of progress," he stated. Bisong explained that based on the present situation of things at the feneral constituency, his focused would be centred on three cardinal areas. According to him, there was need to address infrastructural collapse, economic stagnant, and youth exodus from the constituency The Chief Whip asserted that these would be delivered within a time frame of between one to three months (immediate), four to 13 months (short term), two to three years (mid-term), and legacy of four years. "I am not asking you for time to prove myself. I proved myself here, across 12 years of consistent, principled legislative service. I am asking you for one term to move mountains, and i intend to move them. "Having risen from ordinary member to Deputy Leader, and then to Chief Whip of the CRSHA, I have intimate understanding of legislation, appropriations, constituency development, and the precise mechanics of how federal resources flow from Abuja to our communities. "To my party, i affirm my total loyalty and deep respect for party structures. I ask only for a fair, democratic, and transparent primary process. "Let the voices of our constituents speak freely. When they do, i am confident they will speak my name," he concluded.

Reps dep speaker, 462 others bags bags UniCal P.h.D Dr Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, was among the 463 Ph.D graduands at the 38 convocation ceremony of the University of Calabar (UniCal) on Saturday. Delivering the Vote of Thanks on behalf of the PhD. graduating class, Kalu reflected on the rigours and rewards of the doctoral journey, describing it as “demanding, humbling, and transformative.” He, however, described as abysmal the number of Ph.D holders in the country in relation to her population. Kalu also asserted that the distance between knowledge and impact remains one of the defining challenges of the present day Nigeria. He noted that across many developing societies, including Nigeria, research output has not always translated into policy, and scholarship has not consistently shaped the system. According to him, UNESCO estimates that Africa generates only about one percent of global scientific research output, despite being home to 12.5 percent of the world's population. On the low number of Ph.D holders in Nigeria, Kalu said, "globally, fewer than one percent of the world's adult population holds a doctoral degree. "In developing nations, that figure falls below 0.1 percent. Here in Nigeria, the National Bureau of Statistics has estimated that the number of doctoral holders is fewer than 100,000 in a country of over 220 million people. "This places us within a very narrow community, not of privilege alone, but of obligation. The burden of thought, of innovation, and of intellectual leadership rests, in no small measure, on our shoulders." The deputy speaker concluded saying, "a doctoral degree is not merely the highest academic qualification; it is an initiation into responsibility." On his part, Prof. Offiong Offiong, Vice Chancellor of the University, said his vision for the institution is to ignite a transformative journey, one anchored on excellence in teaching and learning, research and innovation, inclusivity and service to society. Offiong, who assumed duty as VC in December, asserted that his administration would be guided by the core value of truth, economic freedom, transparency, and accountability. "We pledge to be an institution that listens, that responds, and inspires confidence among its stakeholders. "Above all, we make a solid commitment that the narrative of this university would change for the better. "Our progress reports so far. Today I am pleased to report that we have begun the journey with determination and measurable progress," he declared. Kalu’s doctoral research was selected as one of the most outstanding projects.

Group Backs Oghuma’s Second Term Bid, Cites Experience And Loyalty A socio-political group, Unity Voice, has called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State to support the return bid of Hon. Johnson Oghuma for a second term in the House of Representatives, representing Etsako Federal Constituency. In a statement issued on Wednesday in Benin City, the group’s Protem Chairman, Abdulkareem Yakubu, urged the party not to sideline Oghuma amid growing contestation for the Etsako seat. Yakubu described Oghuma as a committed and loyal party stalwart whose candidacy, he said, would enhance the APC’s chances of electoral success in the constituency. According to him, the former lawmaker has distinguished himself as a grassroots politician with a track record of impactful representation across the three local government areas that make up Etsako Federal Constituency. “Hon. Johnson Oghuma has consistently demonstrated that he is a man of the people, with an unblemished record in public service. We dare say he stands out among those aspiring to represent Etsako in the House of Representatives,” Yakubu stated. He acknowledged the interest of other aspirants but stressed that legislative experience should be a critical consideration in the party’s decision-making process. “While we recognise that others are interested in the seat, experience remains a key factor in legislative duties. Beyond that, Oghuma has remained loyal to the party and is one of its founding members,". The group further noted that Oghuma’s previous tenure in the Green Chamber was marked by constituency-focused projects and legislative initiatives that directly benefited his constituents. “We are not unaware of his contributions, both in terms of projects and legislative interventions that addressed the needs of his people,” Yakubu said. He appealed to the APC leadership to prioritise continuity and reward loyalty by granting Oghuma the opportunity to return to the National Assembly. “We therefore urge the party leadership to give due consideration to his aspiration and avoid sacrificing his candidacy for another aspirant in Etsako Federal Constituency,” the statement added.

Nigeria-Eligible Keeper Edges Closer to Canada’s World Cup Squad Nigeria-eligible goalkeeper Owen Goodman has taken a significant step in his international career after earning a call-up from Canada ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations. The 21years old shot-stopper, currently on the books of Crystal Palace, remains eligible to represent Nigeria, Canada, or England. Despite previously prioritizing a future with the Super Eagles, frustrations over administrative lapses appear to have influenced his latest decision. Goodman had engaged with Nigeria’s football authorities, including NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, and was reportedly offered an invitation. However, the absence of proper logistical arrangements ultimately stalled his integration into the squad. Having previously declined Canada’s approach, the young goalkeeper has now reconsidered and could feature in their World Cup plans if he makes the final roster. His inclusion would continue a growing trend of Nigerian-born talents representing Canada on the international stage. Earlier in January 2026, Goodman returned to Crystal Palace following the early termination of his loan spell at Huddersfield Town, after gaining valuable experience during the 2024–25 season with AFC Wimbledon. His patience in navigating international options shows maturity beyond his years, while his steady development through England’s competitive loan system highlights his professionalism and ambition. Football enthusiasts are optimistic that at 21, he’s already demonstrating the qualities of a reliable future No.1 on the international stage.

"Our mandate is to regulate all activities involving ionizing radiation. The agency will deploy all available resources to ensure that safe and standard practices are strictly enforced. "We call for the Commissioner’s full cooperation to ensure the industry meets global benchmarks." She further highlighted that working closely with the State Ministry of Mineral Resources is essential for identifying and managing radiological risks within the State’s developing solid minerals sector. In his response, the Commissioner said the state government, under the leadership of Governor Bassey Otu, is firmly committed to sanitising the mining sector and it's operations. Otu assured the federal delegation of his full cooperation, emphasising that the State's priority in protecting its ecosystem and populace from hazardous substances and unregulated mining practices. He assured the NNRA of the state’s commitment to the mandatory profiling of all mining entities. He maintained that the initiative is for the purposes of documentation and identification of their operational status for peace and security within the sector. According to him, only authorised operators are permitted to function in accordance with federal government regulations and the Cross River State Executive Order No1 of 2024. The order seeks to protect mining communities across the state against insecurity, exploitation, and collection of surface rent from mining entities operating in any part of the state. |
Cocoa Estate: Ukweni demands sincerity from C'River's government A Calabar-based human rights lawyer, Mba Ukweni (SAN), has demanded sincerity from the Cross River Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the state, Mr Ededem Ani, on the cocoa estate dispute. Ukweni, who stated this on Modnay while fielding questions from newsmen in Calabar, said that the statement credited to the Commissioner shows he was not willing to obey the recent court pronouncement on the matter. The legal luminary, therefore, issued a seven days ultimatum to the Commissioner to retract the statement. The Attorney General had on March 12, 2026, described the constitution of an enforcement committee by Ukweni as illegal. Contained in a public notice titled, "Re:Constitution of Illegal Taskforce by Mba Ukweni (SAN)," the Commissioner averred that Ukweni had no power to inaugurate the taskforce committee to enforce a court order in respect of Etung cocoa estate. Ukweniaw firm had inaugurated a taskforce to enforce a court order regarding the government-owned cocoa estate in Etung local government area of Cross River. Ukweni explained that the taskforce which he Inaugurated was for farmers with like minds called "Team Obey Court Order" was to protect themselves from violent individuals who used to attack them in their farms. He cited a case where one of the allottees was killed while working in the farm he rented from government-owned cocoa rstate, wondering why the killers were yet to be prosecuted. He emphasized that the cocoa farmers were inaugurated to work as a team so as to scare their killers from launching attacks. "The court had earlier restrained the Attorney General from evicting allottees from their farms, as they had legitimately paid money into the state government's coffers," Ukweni said. He warned that if the Commissioner who happened to be a party in the case does not meet the two conditions which include, retracting the statement with an apology, "there will be no basis for any discussion, we will react," Ukweni further stated, "If we react, whoever is bruised by our reaction, the blame should be on him, because he knows what to do. "He is a party in that case, and having acknowledged that there is was an order of court, which he is fought severally to upturn, he has a duty to obey," Ukweni explained. The senior lawyer stressed that his law firm is ready to take necessary actions to protect their clients' interests and uphold the rule of law. Their adoption was carried out in Ogoja during a visit of the councilors to Senator representing the district in the National Assembly (NASS). According to the councilors, their adoption was sequel to their performances as president, governor, and senator, respectively. Moving the motion, Lawrence Ishibi of Angiaba/Begiaka ward of Obudu local government area, particularly commended Agom-Jarigbe for his effective representation. While describing him as a "worthy representation," Ishibi said Agom-Jarigbe's performance was visible to all in the senatorial district. "You have indeed served us well. Every street of Cross River North has a footprint of your projects. When we don't see you, we see your signature projects. "We went you to continue in that manner. That is why we are adopting you for reelection," he stated. In a similar manner, Acha Oko of Otukpuru ward in Bekwarra local government, who seconded the motion, described Agom-Jarigbe as a worthy son of the senatorial district. Similarly, like Agom-Jarigbe, the immediate past governor of the State, Prof. Ben Ayade, from Obudu local government, is also seeking election to the senate. Ayade first got elected into the NASS to represent Cross River North's senatorial district in 2011 while he was elected governor in 2015, where he served to terms. His bid to return to the Senate in 2023 was not successful as Agom-Jarigbe won the election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, Agom-Jarigbe defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the protracted crisis in the PDP. |
Ex-Rep member dumps PDP for ADC amid party crisis Mr Eta Mbora, an ex-member of the House of Representatives in the 9th assembly, on Thursday in Calabar, joined the growing list of former federal lawmakers in the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Mbora, who represented Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency, cited the crisis within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the reason for his action. He explained that the prolonged internal crisis rocking the PDP had continued to weaken the party. The former lawmaker said although the move was difficult, “but it becomes necessary in the light of recent developments. “I am grateful to the PDP for the opportunities it gave me to serve at the local government, state, and national levels.” The former lawmaker also expressed appreciation to his supporters and associates for their loyalty over the years. Mbora called on his followers and well-wishers to join him in the ADC and take part in the party’s ongoing registration and revalidation exercise across their wards. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that defection is gradually reshaping the state’s political landscape ahead of the next election cycle. Reports from the ex-lawmaker’s new party reveal that arrangements are already in place to host a reception rally in honour of Mbora and other defectors into the party. His defection comes amid shifting political alignments in Cross River, following the recent moves by former Gov. Liyel Imoke and former Sen. Gershom Bassey to the ADC. (NAN)

How LIFE-ND is transforming rural livelihoods in Edo By Ehigimetor Igbaugba, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Edo is emerging as a model for empowering rural women and youths through the Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprises in the Niger Delta (LIFE-ND) project. The initiative, supported by the Federal Government, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), focuses on sustainable agriculture and rural enterprise development. Across the Niger Delta, youth unemployment and declining agricultural productivity have continued to threaten rural livelihoods. Consequently, development partners and governments are investing in programmes that promote agribusiness and climate-resilient farming. LIFE-ND is one of such intervention designed to improve income, food security and employment opportunities for rural youths and women. The project became effective on Feb. 21, 2019, while the state formally joined the initiative on July 1, 2020. It is currently being implemented in nine Niger Delta states. IFAD funds activities in Abia, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Ondo, while NDDC supports implementation in Akwa Ibom, Imo and Rivers. Overall, the project targets 38,250 beneficiaries engaged in agricultural value chains such as rice, cassava, poultry and fisheries. In Edo, the project has recorded notable progress, especially in youth training and agribusiness incubation. During the first phase, the programme supported 4,387 direct beneficiaries involved in production, processing and marketing activities. Central to the initiative is the incubation model, which pairs trainees with experienced agribusiness farmers who serve as mentors. Under this arrangement, young farmers, including persons with disabilities, receive hands-on training and business support. Mr John Omoruyi, Edo State Project Coordinator, said the successes recorded in the first phase encouraged the state government to expand the programme. According to him, Gov. Monday Okpebholo approved farmland across several local governments to support cluster farming. He added that the state government also appropriated N1.6 billion in the 2025 budget to extend the project to eight additional local governments. Omoruyi said that within 100 days of the present administration, more than N500 million had been disbursed to support 1,797 youths and women. He noted that the expansion could generate an additional 2,000 jobs once counterpart funding is fully released. Similarly, Gov. Okpebholo said agriculture remains central to his administration’s strategy for economic growth and job creation. According to him, expanding agricultural opportunities will help ensure food security while productively engaging youths and women. He added that large-scale farming initiatives and farm settlements are being promoted across the state’s three senatorial districts. Mr Jerry Uwangue, Edo Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, described LIFE-ND as a major step toward improving rural livelihoods. He said the state government was also collaborating with partners on the proposed LIFE-ND Plus initiative to expand the programme’s impact. On her part, IFAD Country Director, Mrs Dede Ekoue, described the project as a transformative initiative for young Nigerians. “From our field visits, LIFE-ND stands as a testimony of how targeted investments in youths and women can transform rural communities,” she said. Ekoue reaffirmed IFAD’s commitment to scaling up the programme through additional financing. Also speaking, Mrs Stella Manureh of the NDDC said the project contributes greatly to economic stability in the Niger Delta. According to her, empowering rural youths through agribusiness can reduce poverty and stimulate regional development. Beyond training and financial support, the project has also invested in rural infrastructure. Omoruyi disclosed that more than 28 facilities, including processing centres and farm clusters, had been constructed across Edo communities. For many beneficiaries, the project has translated into tangible improvements in their livelihoods. Mrs Grace Nwaozuzu, a poultry farmer and project incubator, said the programme helped her establish and expand her business. Nwaozuzu, who joined the project in 2022, now raises between 250 and 350 day-old chicks every production cycle. According to her, the business generates between N180,000 and N200,000 profit after production costs. “With the income, my husband and I were able to buy a small car used for distributing our products to customers,” she said. She added that the enterprise also enabled her family to meet educational and household expenses. Similarly, Mrs Efe Ehanire, a fish processor from Uteh community, said the project introduced modern fish processing technology. She explained that the hybrid gas kiln provided by the project replaced traditional charcoal and firewood methods. Ehanire said the facility is now used by more than 30 women in the community to process and package fish for sale. “We now earn more income and contribute meaningfully to our households,” she said. However, in spite of the progress recorded, stakeholders say the programme still faces several challenges. Dr Abiodun Sanni, National Coordinator of LIFE-ND, identified access to finance, market linkages and climate resilience as key concerns. He noted that climate variability continues to affect agricultural productivity across several participating states. Nevertheless, he said the project had exceeded its initial targets, reaching more than 26,400 beneficiaries in the first phase. Sanni added that periodic supervision missions were conducted to review implementation progress and identify areas for improvement. He expressed optimism that lessons learned would strengthen the programme’s sustainability. Observers say initiatives like LIFE-ND demonstrate the potential of targeted investments in agriculture to transform rural economies. If sustained and expanded, such interventions could play a major role in reducing youth unemployment and improving food security in the Niger Delta. Indeed, for many beneficiaries, the project represents not just an intervention, but a pathway to economic independence and community development. (NANFeatures) |
Institute demands passage of national building code to curb building collapse The Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) says only passage of the National Building Code (NBC) by the National Assembly (NASS) will address the constant incidences of building collapse in the country. Dr Peter Ojeka, Cross River chapter chairman of the NIOB, stated this during a press conference in Calabar on Saturday to mark this year's Builders Day. While noting that every March 13th is dedicated for Builders Day, he explained that the decision to address the media was to seek their partnership to curb incidences of building collapse. Ojeka asserted that media support could help accelerate the passage of the NBC that has reached advance stage at the NASS, as well as help in the advocacy program of the institute. According to him, "NBC of Nigeria is a comprehensive regulatory framework established to set minimum standards for building design, construction, and maintenance to ensure safety, health, and sustainability. "Developed to curb building collapses and structural failures. It governs all building types—residential, commercial; and industrial - covering phases from planning approval to post-construction certification." The Cross River chapter chairman emphasised that while a builder manages the whole process of a building, others; civil engineering, quantity surveyor, and architect, are just part of the processes. He, however, regretted that what you find obtainable in the country today is that a builder that is meant to oversee the entire process have been cut-off. He explained that approval of a building plan is the job of a builder and not the current practice where a town planner makes such approval. "This is why this year's celebration is aimed to promote sustainable construction practices, climate-resilient infrastructure, and policy reforms in the built environment. "The chapter carried this year's sensitization to ministries, secondary and tertiary schools, and construction sites. The institute, however, noted the dearth of builders in Cross River and some other parts of the country. Ojeka said to reverse this trend, the NIOB is calling in tertiary institutions that are yet to do so to establish departments of building as courses. The 2026 Builders Day has as it theme: "Advocacy and Policy Influence Towards Sustainable Reforms for a Resilient Built Environment." The Builders Day was instituted to commemorate the victims of the Ita-Faaji building collapse in Lagos in 2019. |
C'River's farmers inaugurates committe to enforce court ruling Cocoa farmers in Cross River have inaugurated committee to enforce court ruling that restrained the State government from evicting allottees from their cocoa farms. The committee was inaugurated by Mba Ukweni, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and Chief Executive Ukweni Chambers in Calabar on Tuesday. He described the committee as "Team Obey Court Order," noting that they are meant to safeguard cocoa farmers' right and bring back sanity to the government cocoa estate in Etung local government area of Cross River. Ukweni urged the team to sensitise and enlighten farmers on the need to respect the court order. Ukweni, counsel to allottees stated that the court had passed an interlocutory injunction in favour of the allottees, restraining the state government and its agents from evicting them from their legitimate cocoa farms. He said that government cannot forcefully evict the allottees from their farmlands after collecting money from them to settle royalties owed to cocoa landlords' communities for about 16 years. He urged the team to discharge their duties peacefully without violence and report anyone disobeying the court order to the appropriate authorities. "Your activities have to be peaceful and orderly. Don't resort to violence," he said. Ukweni read the terms of reference guiding the taskforce's operations, which include placing affected cocoa farms under surveillance, identifying offenders, and bringing them to justice. The committee is expected to encourage farmers and other beneficiaries to possess their farmlands in line with the agreement they entered into with the government. Meanwhile, defaulters of the court order have been served with forms 48 and 49, warning them of impending consequences. Ukweni maintained that the government can not go against an agreement it entered into with the allottees, and that the court order must be obeyed. "Court made an order restraining the government from evicting beneficiaries, and we set up this team 'Obey Court Order' to ensure compliance," he said. |
APC charges chapter chairmen on transparency, party supremacy in C’River The Chapter chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River have been charged on transparency and work for the overall interest of the party rather than their alleged “Godfather”. Mr Chris Etta, State Chairman of the party, gave this charge during the inauguration of the chapter chairmen on Thursday in Calabar. Etta emphasised that as the party’s representative at the local government level, the chapter chairmen must live above board and be responsive to the yearnings of the party faithful in the council areas. He noted that their election was a testament to their acceptability by the people and as such, could not afford to work for anyone’s interest, other than that of the party and those who elected them. “Your election is a call to duty and not to serve the interest of your godfather or build power for yourself and you must work as a team with their executive. “The party must be a priority to you rather than your sponsor or godfather. Make yourself available to your people,” he said. Etta further urged the chairmen to hit the ground running, as there was no time to waste, owing to the tight schedule of the 2027 general elections. “There are so many things to be done right now, at both the zonal congress and the national convention. “In view of this, you must inaugurate your ward executives by this weekend and report back to the secretariat by Monday,” stated. Responding, chairman of the chapter chairmen, Chief Kevin Ojong, pledged their loyalty to the party and its leadership. According to him, they have been given a matching order and a mile stone to cover. “We will do all that is expected of us and for the interest of the party. Our aim is to work for the growth of the APC in Cross River and nothing less,” he stated. It would be recalled that the state chapter of the APC had on Tuesday, elected a new 35-member executive to lead the party in the next four years.

Imasuangbon Blasts APC Over Alleged Attack on Obi, Oyegun in Benin A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State, Barrister Ken Imasuangbon, on Wednesday condemned what he described as rising political intolerance in the state, warning that Tuesday’s attack on key opposition figures could trigger chaos and anarchy if not urgently addressed. Imasuangbon was reacting to the reported attack on the Benin residence of former Edo State Governor, John Odigie-Oyegun, where the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and other political stakeholders were said to be meeting behind closed doors. Describing the incident as “the height of political desperation and intimidation,” the ADC stalwart called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to rein in members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State. He said, “It is deeply troubling that Edo State is witnessing this emerging wave of political intolerance. What happened on Tuesday is a prelude to chaos and anarchy if not checked,” Imasuangbon said. He alleged that the attack bore “the imprint of ruling party hirelings,” insisting that such acts of political gangsterism must be condemned by all lovers of democracy. According to him, “The news of the attack on the ADC Secretariat in Benin and the residence of Chief Odigie-Oyegun, where prominent leaders like Peter Obi and others were meeting, came to us as a rude shock. "It is embarrassing and unbecoming of a state with our democratic history.” Imasuangbon popularly called the "riceman" warned against turning Edo into a battleground ahead of the 2027 general elections. “Edo State should not be turned into a political battlefield as 2027 approaches. We have gone past that era. Politics should be played freely and fairly,” he stated. The former governorship aspirant, popularly known as “Riceman,” urged Governor Monday Okpebholo to rise to the occasion and ensure law and order. “Governor Monday Okpebholo should stand firm and put his house in order. Edo deserves better. This is a time to showcase achievements in office, not to encourage miscreants to act as political enforcers,” he said. He further lamented that the incident had brought reputational damage to Edo State in the comity of nations. “This is not the Edo State our founding fathers built. We must not allow desperation to destroy the democratic foundations they laid,” he added. |
Edo Govt Faults Obi’s Claim of Attack on Supporters, Says Allegation Is False The Edo State Government has strongly denied an allegation by former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, that members of his political camp were attacked by government officials during activities in the state. In a detailed statement issued on Tuesday, the government described the claim as “false, malicious and a clear misrepresentation of facts,” stressing that neither Governor Monday Okpebholo nor any organ of the state government authorised or carried out attacks against members of any political party. The statement, signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Patrick Ebojele, said the Okpebholo administration “is not, and will never be, in the business of attacking innocent Nigerians, regardless of their political affiliation.” According to the government, no directive was at any time issued by the governor or state officials to target supporters of the Labour Party or any other political group. It added that the allegation lacked credible evidence and appeared calculated to mislead the public and create unnecessary political tension. The statement recalled Governor Okpebholo’s earlier remarks on high-profile political visits to Edo State, clarifying that such comments were made strictly in his capacity as the Chief Security Officer of the state. The statement further explained that the governor’s position was guided by security considerations and public safety, not political hostility toward any individual or organisation. “The governor has consistently maintained that politically exposed persons are expected to notify relevant authorities ahead of major public engagements to enable adequate security coordination in the interest of public safety,” the statement said. The government described attempts to interpret the governor’s security advisory as intimidation or evidence of orchestrated attacks as “unfortunate, misleading and politically motivated.” Providing further context, the statement referenced an incident that occurred on Monday, 23 February, involving a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Senate Chief Whip, Roland Owie. According to the government, the group was denied access to a meeting held at the residence of John Odigie-Oyegun due to an internal crisis within the party. The situation, it said, was resolved only after armed police officers were deployed to restore peace. The government argued that the incident underscored the role of security agencies in managing internal political disputes, rather than supporting claims of state-sponsored intimidation. While accusing the ADC and, by extension, Peter Obi of what it termed an attempt to cast aspersions on the administration, the state government maintained that it would not condone any form of violence and remained focused on its developmental agenda. The Edo State Government therefore urged political actors to verify facts before making public statements capable of overheating the polity. It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting all residents and visitors to the state, while upholding the constitutional rights of Nigerians to lawful movement and association. The statement concluded that the administration’s priority remains governance, public safety and economic development, and not political persecution. |
Navy calls for inclusion of Golf tournament in C'River touring calendar The Nigerian Navy has called for the Inclusion of the annual Eastern Naval Command (ENC) Golf Tournament in the tourism calendar of Cross River. The demand was made by the former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba, at the occasion of the 2026 edition of the tournament at the Calabar Golf course on Sunday. While lauding the organization of this year's edition, Ezeoba emphasised that a tournament that attracted golfers from across the country has the potential to boost the state's tourism sector as well as attract the needed revenue. He asserted that all that was needed was for the Cross River government to key in and be partner of the annual event subsequently. According to him, "I have had a wonderful experience of golf and I must say that it's something that should be encouraged. Golf is life, whether we like it or not. "In this edition, we had people over 81 years and above who did nine holes that tells you that even at old age, if you are a golfer, you still have a medium of exercising yourself to the best of your ability. "Well, it is an annual event in the calendar of the activities of the flag officers and of our command structure. So every year is part of their regimental activities. "But what is important is to find a more sustainable way to support the effort outside the realms of the Navy or the confines of the flag officers' capability and financial resources. "So, my take is that the state government should come in, add value to the development of this course as a source of tourism potential for the state." On his part, Rear Admiral Chiedozie Okehie, Flag Officer Commanding of the ENC, said the 2026 edition of the annual event attracted 152 golfers from across Nigeria to Calabar. He noted that aside from the physical fitness value of the sport, the annual event also serves as a venue for networking. On the nexus between the sport and security, Okehie said, "the Calabar Golf course is about 10km so, we must focus on the physical fitness of our personnel in addition to their mental toughness." While welcoming the golfers to the state, Peter Odey, Cross River's deputy governor, declared the state as the most peaceful in the country today. Odey encouraged the golfers to help promote the state as an investment destination, particularly in the area of tourism and agriculture. On the evemt, Odey said, "To be honest, I didn't know it was going to be this well-organised. I'm impressed with what I've seen here. I'm impressed with the way they are taking it seriously. "it's an encouragement for some of us who've just started playing golf to ensure that we step up our game." On his part, Patrick Acholonu, the traditional ruler of Orlu in Imo state, urged that state to take advantage of the tournament to promote and boost it tourism sector. Tuesday Achukwu, an assistant comptroller of Customs in Kaduna state, emerged the overall winner of the tournament with 80 gross, 12 under par, handicap 20 and returned 60 net. In his victory speech, Achukwu asserted that hard work paved the way for his victory. "I arrived Calabar earlier and we to practice at the golf course, but was shocked to discover that it is the biggest course I have ever played in and it took me some time to get acquainted with the course. "I must say that perseverance and resilience and commitment pave the way for me," he emphasized.

No fewer than five secondary schools were part of the campaign that took place in Government Girls Secondary School, Calabar. She explained that the programme on enlightening children on savings is an NDIC initiative being carried out annually in October during the celebration of the World Savings Day. ‘’Unfortunately, we couldn’t hold it last year, so we just got a date from the ministry this year. ‘’It is important to enlighten children on the essence of saving and catching them young; another angle of the initiative is also to make people aware of what NDIC does, our mandates, and our functions. “We protect banks, we supervise banks; our mandates are full Bank deposit guarantee, bank supervision, bank resolution, and bank liquidation,’’ she said. Adeghe said that they aimed at highlighting the safety of money in banks and to assure the children that they could save their money in the banks. ‘’That is basically what we came here to do today,” she stated. Similarly, Mr Obialor Ugochuchwu, Zonal Controller, Owerri zonal office of the NDIC, advised the children to disregard the rumour that banks were not safe to save money. ‘’The importance of the corporation is to ensure that the money they save in any bank, protected by the NDIC, is secured and they get their money back, should there be any challenges,’’ he said. PDP lost 2023 C'River governorship poll to internal sabotage, Onor Prof. Sandy Onor, Cross River's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in 2023, says the party lost the election due to internal sabotage and nothing else. Onor who was a member of the senate in the 9th assembly, made the disclosure on Sunday in Calabar during an interview with newsmen to mark his 60th birthday anniversary. He said he had the capacity to govern the state, and he articulated his reasons for running for the position. Onor, however, noted that some persons, who felt aggrieved for whatever reasons, sabotaged the party by carrying out anti-party activity that cumulated into loss of the governorship poll. He said those attributing loss of the election to any other factor were merely doing so to cover their "evil deeds." "But if we had won that election, would anybody have said anything, and I knew why we lost. Even journalists know why we lost. "No matter your campaign, once the super structure of the electoral system is seized from you, you will lose. "Those who are still making noise about my loss are those who imagined that PDP was their personal property and nobody can defeat them. "We defeated them at the primaries, and heaven did not fall. They have no capacity bigger than my own, this bad Belle is too much. "You engage in anti-party, and you are proud to continue to sing it for a man who has benefitted from the party not because of merit but because of access for over 24 years. "Those blaming me for PDP’s failure are cowards, people who felt that the PDP was their personal property, so when they failed, they refused to recover from their failure. There is no sportsmanship in their attitude. "They should be ashamed of themselves that they did anti party, and they should stop spewing lies all over the place. "I know why I lost the elections, and it's not to the fact of what they are saying. When it is time, we will speak," he declared. Onor, who represented Cross River Central in the 9th assembly, however, said that those undermining the PDP ahead of the 2027 general electronic would be shocked by what they will see. Speaking on his 60th birthday anniversary, Onor said God has been kind to him considering his background and the village he hailed from. According to him, "I have no regrets at 60, you know with the benefits of hindsight you look at some things, maybe you would imagine that if you did it this other way, maybe it would have been better, I am a very careful thinker and very deliberate in my actions. "No matter how carefully planned your life is, there are variables that are not within your grasp. That is why God is greater than man. "I am not a devious person, so all my actions are well thought out, and whatever variables are thrown at me, I calculate. "I have done my best and also deal with them as I see them as a man. So, for me, all that has happened to me has been according to God.

Prof. Onor warns against undermining PDP in 2027 Prof. Sandy Onor, Cross River's Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in 2023 has warned against undermining the capacity of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Professor of History in the University of Calabar (Unical) gave the warning while speaking with newsmen as part of activities marking his 60th birthday anniversary in Calabar on Sunday. Onor, who represented Cross River Central senatorial district in the 9th assembly, said that the party has put behind internal crisis that almost destroyed. He described PDP as once biggest party in Africa. While attributing the crisis to fifth columnist, Onor emphasised that attempt to barkanise would only make it stronger and better. According to him, the recent court pronouncement denouncing the alleged convention in Ibadan is a pointer that those who stood on the part of truth have been vindicated. He stressed that calling Nyesom Wike a factional leader of the party was wrong as there was never a faction but rather those who challenged the sidelining of the party’s constitution for selfish purposes. "That being said, I want you all to know that PDP is alive and kicking. "We shouldn't be periodising the flow of political history. God has his own time. If God says in 2027 we will bounce back, we will definitely bounce back; if he says in 2027 we should tarry a bit, we will tarry but what I am telling you is that we are not dead. "When you are engaging in farming, don't you plant a seed? Sometimes a seed is being planted and people think it is dead, but then it germinates with fruits that are even better than the previous ones. "So, we are not dead. We are going through our own vicissitudes, which is a natural tendency for every organisation, for every man. The party will come out from the valley to the mountain too again. "We are patient and resilient enough to go through it all. We have learnt better and will do better in the future. That is the truth. "I'm not a lawyer but there is no reasonable court who will clap for you for violating court orders. "Very soon we will organise our own national convention. We will keep the door open for reconciliation, if they come, we take them," he stated. On his relationship with the FCT minister, Onor said, beyond politics, he likes Wike's company, enjoys his fidelity, likes his dependability, and has also elected to make him his political leader. He emphasised that the FCT minister's style may not be the style of everyone, but his style is productive and yields results in its own way. "He is a very great guy, patriotic and dependable. He os one of the best leaders Nigeria has been able to produce," he said. Speaking on his journey of life at 60, the professor of History said he has had a beautiful public service record, as well as a good father and husband. "I don't think it is for me to say because I cannot be hyping myself but I think there are many of them relating to my life. "I graduated top of my class at 21, got back to teach in the University at 22, started the Masters Programme and got advanced to the Ph.D because of my brilliant performance, had a PhD just as I turned 27. "Got into politics and was elected into several offices. I went back to the university and became a professor. I have so many books and articles to my credit. "My public service record is beautiful. I am happily married with children. I am a happy man. But like I said, I have also had my own shares of failure. In all of my stride, God has been beautiful," he said.
