Why the Grammys Still Don’t See Afrobeats; And Why That’s About to Change. BY CHRISTOPHER OJO CEO/Executive Producer, 1st World Entertainment. Red isn't just a color to me. It is an unmistakable pointer to who i am. As a music executive and as the CEO and Executive Producer of 1st World Entertainment, my presence at the 2026 Grammy Awards reinforced long-held convictions about the architecture of global entertainment power. In this industry, Los Angeles stands as the clearest marker of the practical possibilities of show business. The Grammys remain an unmistakable indicator of relevance across all forms of music and entertainment enterprise, most notably the visible and tangible milestones of success etched along Hollywood Boulevard. There are moments during Grammy week when attention drifts from the grand screens and curated performances to the stars embedded in the pavement, engraved testaments to the imprints left by artists and ventures that once began with ambition and belief. This celebrated pathway carries the names of individuals who transitioned from driven obscurity to unmistakable identification through cohesive storytelling, branding, and cultural alignment, elements Hollywood has long mastered. From an executive vantage point, the absence of an Afrobeats artist claiming that felt symbol of recognition is not an indicator of defeat. Rather, it is a strategic signal. A call to attention that we, as ambitious and energetic Africans, must heed by taking deeper ownership of how our stories are produced, positioned, and preserved within the global entertainment economy. Afrobeats is not unseen because it lacks global appeal or musical excellence; it is overlooked because the systems that reward recognition respond to structure, continuity, and long term narrative alignment. Until our sound is matched by equally intentional positioning, ownership, and storytelling, visibility will remain inconsistent. Our narratives must, therefore, be powered by a collective identity of relevance, particularly in the imprints we leave through the confident display of our show business and entertainment prowess. Our expression and presence at the Grammy Awards require meticulous curation, not merely to seek validation, but to articulate stories of the essential and unmistakable elements that draw the world, especially the entertainment industry, into sustained engagement and recognition beyond nominations. We possess a unique sonic identity, shaped by the ethereal convergence of diverse cultural influences, forming a vibrant and commercially compelling creative flow. What is changing now is not the sound, but the consciousness behind it. African music is entering an era led by executives, producers, and cultural architects who understand that recognition is engineered, not accidental. As this shift accelerates, our presence at future Grammy ceremonies wili no longer ask to be noticed; it will assert relevance with clarity, cohesion, and commercial intent. This is how Afrobeats moves from participation to permanence and why the Grammys will not just see it, but reckon with it. |

FG to intervene on 115km Ikom-Obudu Federal Highway – lawmaker Dr Victor Abang, Representing Ikom/Boki Federal Constituency of Cross River in the House of Representatives, says the Federal Government will soon intervene in the 115km Ikom-Obudu federal highway. Abang disclosed this on Tuesday, while giving account of his stewardship to members of his constituency in Calabar. The road has seen youths of the areas protesting against it’s poor condition and abandonment for several decades. The protesters, armed with placards of various inscriptions had vowed to remain on the highway until something urgent was done on the road. The protesting youths blocked the highway and prevented commuters from plying the road. The lawmaker however, explained that the road has been captured in the 2026 budget and advised the youths to desist from staging protests and blocking the road. Addressing the concerns of the youths, Abang said: “As much as we sympathise with the youths, the procurement process for road construction is a bit long. “The state Gov. Bassey Otu alongside national assembly members have made representation to the Federal Government, and as we speak, adequate provision has been made for the road in the 2026 budget. “We, as representatives also met with the works minister, and we are sure with this and the efforts of the governor the road has been captured,” he said. He assured the youths that construction work would soon commence on the road and cautioned them against punishing road users by blocking the road. Abang listed a number of interventions in the constituency to include the Kakwagon/Oki/Borun/Njua Road, the Katchuan/Bitia/Kakwagon/Nkayang/Kakubok roads with foundational enhancement to forge links with harvest zones. He also disclosed that he sponsored a bill to establish a Federal Medical Centre in Boki as the area has no tertiary hospital. Abang also said that he was working to attract a constituency project to all the wards in the federal constituency. The lawmaker explained that the decision to present his achievements publicly was driven by the need to counter misinformation, particularly on the social media. According to him, governance often presents realities that differ from campaign promises. He noted that while some pledges could not be fulfilled due to prevailing constraints, several impactful projects were executed, including interventions that were not originally part of his campaign agenda. Abang cited the expansion of network connectivity to rural communities as part of his major achievements. He explained that although it was not promised during campaigns, the opportunity emerged after he assumed office. He disclosed that 35 communities have so far been connected with telecommunication masts, improving communication and economic activities, while more communities are scheduled for intervention. Abang said his legislative focus has been guided by effective representation, advocacy, and the protection of community interests.

Stop rating NASS members by number of constituency projects -Akiba Mr Bassey Akiba (APC-Cross River), on Saturday night decried the current system of rating lawmakers by the number of constituency projects executed, saying it undermined and their primary role of lawmaking. Akiba, representative of Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency, said this when he interfaced with some selected journalists in Calabar. He said that Nigerians should focus on demanding good governance instead of project execution. According to him, lawmaking is the core function of a legislator. He noted that while there was nothing wrong with Nigerians demanding good governance from their representatives, project execution was a distraction from lawmaking. “No doubt constituency projects help address community needs, but many lawmakers see it as a distraction from lawmaking. “Am not saying it is wrong, but most Nigerians do not know that it is not a primary responsibility of a lawmaker. “We struggle hard to get these projects attracted to our constituencies and it is affecting our primary responsibility which is making laws,” he said. The lawmaker however said that in spite of the seeming challenge, he had been able to impact positively in the lives of his constituents through developmental projects and social intervention programmes. He explained that he adopted a verifiable constituency-based initiative spanning education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, and economic empowerment to bring the dividends of democracy to his constituets According to him, I adopted a grassroots-focused approach aimed at reaching a broader cross-section of constituents rather than concentrating benefits on a few individuals. “On agriculture, my constituency outreach operates across four value chains—cassava, oil palm, poultry, and fisheries, through which farmers receive inputs such as hybrid cassava stems and poultry feeds to boost productivity. “A cooperative-based empowerment programme was established across each ward in both Calabar Municipality and Odukpani Local Government Area with thousands of residents enrolled, and the initiative is supported annually with funding. “₦25 million was disbursed through the scheme in the most recent cycle to enable members access micro-support for agriculture and small-scale economic activities through the Bank of Agriculture,” he explained. Akiba added that on education, he inaugurated a ₦50 million educational support programme in 2024, followed by an expanded ₦100 million scheme in 2025, targeting indigent students. “Beneficiaries receive assistance covering school fees, books, and other learning materials, including school bags. “In the area of public safety and infrastructure, my intervention has improved night-time visibility and enhanced security in previously dark areas across several communities of the constituency,” he also said. Free healthcare access: C’River lawmaker targets 10,000 constituents No fewer than 10, 000 residents of Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency in Cross River are expected to benefit from a free healthcare service to be provided by Mr Bassey Akiba (APC-Cross River). Akiba representing the constituency, disclosed this at a media briefing with some selected journalists in Calabar on Saturday night. He said that the beneficiaries would access the free healthcare service through his dedicated National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) accredited cards. He explained that the aim of the initiative was to enable indigent members of his constituents have unhindered access to better medical facility irrespective of their financial status. According to him, the holders of this card will be able to have access to medical treatment anywhere beyond Cross River. The lawmaker disclosed that no fewer than 4,000 persons benefitted from his medical outreaches in 2025. He said that this was in addition to providing educational support to over 3,000 students in the same period. He also said that 17,000 oil palm seedlings, as well as improved cassava varieties were distributed to farmers in the constituency. “However, my focus this year is health, where we are using economic structure at the wards levels to mobilise people to access these programmes. “So, for health, we are looking at a few things. Almost 4,000 of our people were given free treatment. Out of the 4,000, about 410 persons got surgery of different types. “This year, we are going to do more. But beyond averages, we are looking at a situation where people will carry my card and go to the hospital and access healthcare for free. “As I speak, there are a number of people like that that goes to hospital with my card to access health care for free. “So our target is that we need to do not less than 10,000 of these people, and we are working towards that. “We are also going to do more. we are also working towards the revitalisation of a number of primary health care centers,” he said. Akiba also disclosed that his tenure had been defined by a rigorous balance between constitutional mandates and grassroots economic empowerment. He categorised his work into two distinct frameworks; the “in-chamber mandate” (lawmaking, oversight, and representation) and the “out-chamber mandate” (communication and economic restructuring). He further revealed that he had sponsored 14 motions and three bills within the last two years. According to him, the motions and bills focused on areas such as technology education, hospital personnel management, and data regulation. The lawmaker emphasised that motions and bills should not be the “exclusive responsibility” of the lawmaker, urging constituents and journalists to identify obsolete laws for amendment. “I keep encouraging constituents to bring motionable issues to us. When RUCU was almost cut off, they brought it to me, and I took it to the floor,” he said. He explained that the cornerstone of his “out-chamber” success was the establishment of a cooperative-based economic structure in every polling unit across his constituency. “These cooperatives serve as both a social safety net and a logistical platform for distributing dividends of democracy. “I understand the power of people coming together. We use that platform to activate participation,” the lawmaker explained. He further disclosed that he had certified 500 cooperatives, paying the necessary government fees to ensure they remain viable and independent of his office. (NAN)

FG partners NGOs, private organisations to boost food security Food The Federal Government says it remains committed to promoting and creating synergies with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and the private sector to enhance food security, economic growth, job creation and poverty reduction. The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari stated this on Thursday in Calabar during the distribution of farm inputs to farmers in Cross River. Represented by Mr Bassey Iwara, Director, Agric Business and Market Development in the ministry, Kyari noted that the present administration had demonstrated the political will to transform the agricultural sector. He explained that the President Bola Tinubu- led administration was implementing various economic reforms to stimulate productive capacity, create jobs, and reduce cost of living. Kyari further noted that emergency responses and targeted humanitarian actions have also been taken to ameliorate food crisis in the country. “Consequently, the ministry has rolled out many programmes and projects to address some of the challenges of farmers and make food available, accessible and affordable to all Nigerians. “The ministry has considered the implementation of short-term plans and support mechanism to make essential farm inputs more affordable and accessible to farmers through a transparent and accountable process. “Our foremost concern is the facilitation of agro-input as and basic farm machinery to small-scale farmers, who are constrained by the high market cost of these essential inputs, and this need assistance,” he stated. Also, Mr Ekori Nsan, the state coordinator of the federal ministry of agriculture, asserted that the present administration had been putting smiles on the faces of farmers irrespective of the degree. He urged the farmers to put the items to good use so as to achieve the intended goal of enhancing food securitty. “The era of collect and sell or dump is gone; a follow up mechanism has been put in place; and it will be very bad for us to hear stories on this,” he said. Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr Asuquo Asuquo, commended the government for deeming it fit to provide them with the inputs. He, however, appealed that the farmers be trained on how to use the inputs. Items distributed were water sprayers and power tillers.

How Okpebholo’s Cloud will Give Edo sovereign digital lungs By Patrick Ahkere Ebojele, PhD The launch of Edo Cloud by the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo has breathed new life into the state’s digital governance journey, while also bringing to light the deep structural flaws in the former fraudulent e-governance platform inherited from the previous government. That administration made efforts to digitise public service processes, but with a system was weighed down by legal, technical and operational weaknesses that eventually made a full overhaul unavoidable. With Edo Cloud — a fully state-owned, home-grown digital platform — Edo State has reclaimed control of its digital infrastructure and repositioned itself as a leading example of sustainable e-governance in Nigeria. One of the biggest weaknesses of the failed e-governance platform was the absence of full state ownership. While it supported paperless governance and digital workflows, Edo State Government did not own the intellectual property behind the system. In practical terms, the state was running its daily operations on a platform it did not fully control — a risky position for any serious government. Closely connected to this was restricted backend access. Government officials could not independently manage, modify or fully control the platform without relying on external consultants. This created a dangerous dependency that weakened institutional autonomy and exposed government operations to avoidable risks. Another major concern was limited data sovereignty. Without full ownership, the state could not guarantee complete control over its data. In today’s digital world, where data security and privacy are central to governance, this was a significant vulnerability. Sustainability was also a problem. With no internal control or ownership, the long-term future of the platform depended heavily on external parties. Any breakdown in that relationship could disrupt government operations, slow service delivery and reverse years of digital progress. The system also lacked flexibility. It was not modular enough to support easy upgrades, expansion or integration of new services without heavy technical intervention. This slowed innovation and made it harder for the platform to evolve alongside the growing needs of the civil and public service. On top of all this, technical dependency became a burden. Routine maintenance, updates and troubleshooting required outside support, increasing operational costs and limiting opportunities for in-house technical capacity development. These defects may not have been obvious to the public, but they posed serious long-term risks to governance stability, service continuity and digital independence — risks the Okpebholo administration chose not to ignore. Upon assuming office, Governor Monday Okpebholo ordered a thorough review of the state’s digital governance framework. According to the Head of Service, Dr. Anthony Okungbowa, the Governor found it unacceptable for Edo State to “breathe through the nostrils of another” — a clear reference to the state’s digital dependency. Instead of patching a system that was fundamentally flawed, the administration chose a bolder and more sustainable path: building a fully state-owned, home-grown platform that would permanently resolve issues of ownership, control, security and sustainability. That decision marked a turning point in Edo’s digital governance journey. The outcome of that bold choice is Edo Cloud — a state-owned cloud platform designed, built, managed and maintained entirely within Edo State’s technology ecosystem. As part of its rollout, over 70 E-Governance Champions were trained at the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) in Benin City on the platform’s interface, functionality and deployment strategy. The training brought together civil servants from various ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), alongside technical experts and key stakeholders. Declaring the workshop open, Dr. Okungbowa described Edo Cloud as a major leap forward in the state’s digital transformation, noting that it is more robust, secure and user-friendly than the former system. Unlike the old platform, Edo Cloud guarantees full data sovereignty, ensuring that Edo State alone owns, controls and manages its digital infrastructure and data assets. It also provides unrestricted backend access, empowering government technical teams to independently manage, modify, upgrade and maintain the system without external interference. Another key strength of Edo Cloud is sustainability. Because it is fully state-owned, the platform eliminates long-term dependence on third parties, reduces operational costs and ensures continuity of service regardless of political transitions. Technically, Edo Cloud features a modular architecture that supports continuous upgrades, easy integration of new services and seamless expansion across MDAs. This ensures the platform grows with the needs of the civil and public service. Speaking on the technical design, Dr. Benjamin Ben, who led the development team, explained that Edo Cloud offers improved data control, a unified user experience, enhanced scalability and automated workflows. He said the platform was deliberately designed to be simple and intuitive, making it easier for civil servants across MDAs to adopt and use. Unlike the former system, which often required external technical support, Edo Cloud enables independent usage and internal support. E-Gov Champions are now equipped to train and assist their colleagues, reducing the need for constant outside intervention. “With what we have done, there will be no need for micro-managing. The E-Gov Champions will provide support for their community. This aligns with His Excellency’s directive that civil and public servants should be able to do their jobs independently,” Dr. Ben said. The Head of IT Infrastructure and System Engineering at the Edo State Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), Engr. Courage Adaghe, stressed that Edo Cloud is fully state-owned, guaranteeing security, sustainability and flexibility. He explained that the platform was built, managed and maintained entirely within Edo State’s technology ecosystem, ensuring local capacity building and institutional knowledge retention. “The platform will serve as a one-stop digital solution for public service operations. It was fully built, managed and maintained within Edo State’s technology ecosystem,” he said. This local ownership model stands in sharp contrast to the former platform, where core control remained outside the state. Beyond its technical advantages, Edo Cloud is designed to strengthen transparency, accountability, efficiency and citizen participation. By digitising workflows, reducing paperwork and automating processes, the platform is expected to significantly improve service delivery across MDAs. Dr. Okungbowa noted that the adoption of Edo Cloud will enhance transparency and accountability, improve governance processes, reduce bureaucracy and position Edo State once again at the forefront of digital public service administration in Nigeria. He also urged E-Gov Champions to act as ambassadors of the new system, noting that resistance to change often comes from poor communication and lack of understanding. One of the participants, Mr. Ogbewe Osaro Anthony, E-Gov Champion from the Edo State Social Investment Programme Office, commended Governor Okpebholo for approving a fully state-owned platform. He described Edo Cloud as richer in content, more flexible and better suited to public service operations than the previous system, adding that its features would significantly enhance collaboration and productivity across MDAs. This feedback reflects growing confidence within the civil service that Edo Cloud is not just a replacement system, but a transformational tool. The former e-governance platform denied Edo state ownership, restricted access, limited sustainability, poor scalability and heavy external dependency — made it unsuitable for long-term governance stability. Now Governor Okpebholo’s Edo Cloud has tackled these weaknesses directly by delivering a platform that is fully state-owned, secure, sustainable, scalable, user-friendly and locally managed. With the Edo Cloud now operational, Edo State has not only reclaimed control of its digital future but has also set a new standard for sub-national digital governance in Nigeria. In an era where data sovereignty, institutional autonomy and service efficiency define governance success, Governor Okpebholo’s bold investment in a home-grown cloud platform stands out as a visionary and future-proof decision. Edo State is no longer borrowing digital breath — it now owns its digital lungs. Ebojele is Chief Press Secretary to Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpehbholo |
The organisers of the annual 10km Owan marathon have announced plans to sponsor athletes to Nigeria's two elite marathon races, Lagos and Okpekpe, scheduled for February and May 2026 respectively. The organiser, Chris Ojo, made the disclosure while speaking on the just concluded Owan marathon in a statement made available to newsmen. While noting that the annual Owan race was actually on its 7th edition, Ojo explained that the decision to sponsor athletes, particularly those from Edo State extraction, is to groom them for global stardom. He said that as part of the plan, a coach would soon be unveiled that will train and take these athletes to the mentioned marathan races in Lagos and Okpekpe in Edo state. "This is the essence of the Owan marathon race; discover talents, and groom them for global stardom. "The only way we can prepare them for global stardom is to constantly engage them in major marathon races in Nigeria and beyond," he stated. Speaking on the just concluded this year's edition of the Owan marathon race, Ojo who described it as a huge success, said a consultant would soon be engaged as part of effort to take the annual event to the next level. Ojo asserted that the consultant to be engaged would not only market and promote the event but also be involved in the planning of the main race. According to Ojo, "all these are geared towards standardising the race that has begun to attract the participation of international athletes, particularly from Ghana and other neighboring countries. "As you will recall, when we started this event, it was dominated by local athletes from Owan and other parts of Edo state, and progresses to other states. "The 2026 edition saw athletes from Ghana stealing the show with their athletes carting away three of the six top prizes in both the male and female categories." The Owan marathon organisers noted that the 2026 edition also saw the government of Edo state, including the Owan local government, showing more interest in the annual event. Ojo particularly commended the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku and Chairman of the state Sports Commission, Desmond Enabulele, for their involvement in the 2026 editon. According to the organiser, "their roles in this year's edition brought more glamour to the annual event as their promise of full participation in subsequent editions is also a boost to us." Ojo said he initiated that annual event to provide a platform where talents, especially from the Owan community, can be discovered and nurtured. While noting that he remained fulfilled that he has remained consistent in organising the annual event since the first edition, he, however, conceded that the race is not where he aimed for it to be. According to him, that is the essence he planned to engage a consultant beginning from the next edition of the race.

Contractors: Okpebholo says performance will determine future jobs Governor Monday Okpebholo has warned contractors that future jobs will be determined by their current performance, just as he reaffirmed his administration's commitment to quality, speed, and accountability in the execution of projects across the state. The governor emphasised that his government does not owe allegiance to any contractor but to the people of Edo State. According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr Patrick Ebojele, the governor made this clarification in Benin on Tuesday during a stakeholders’ meeting with major contractors handling key projects in the state. The meeting focused on a comprehensive review of project status, progress timelines, quality standards, causes of delays, and contractor accountability. Thr governor stressed that awarding contracts is only the first step, noting that effective follow-up and proper execution are critical to achieving value-driven and durable infrastructure. According to him, "I’m happy you are here for this brief meeting. One thing is to give a contract, another thing is to follow up, and the third is execution. “I have been visiting project sites and I can see work in progress, but I am not too happy with the pace of some of the projects. Projects that are seven to nine months old should have made more visible progress by now.” While commending some contractors, including CCECC and Setraco, for improved performance, the governor made it clear that funding has never been an issue, as his administration has ensured prompt payment of contractors’ certificates. “I can say it authoritatively that no contractor’s payment has been delayed. Nobody lobbied us to get paid. So, if we are paying you quickly, you must also work fast and complete projects within the agreed time,” he stated. Okpebholo warned against any attempt to cut corners, emphasizing that his administration would not tolerate substandard work or unnecessary project revaluation. He said, "I don’t delay payments because I don’t want any form of revaluation. If you come tomorrow to say I should revalue your contract, I will never do it. Since payment is not delayed, you must deliver as agreed." He further stressed that future contracts will be strictly performance-based. “The faster and better you perform, the faster we give you new projects. If you are not doing well, you will not get another job. We want projects that will last for Edo people, so that the next governor in 10 or 20 years will focus on other priorities.” The governor cited recent site visits, including Church Road and Ekenhuan Road in Benin City, where he expressed concern over quality and drainage provisions, insisting that proper drainage systems must be included on both sides of Ekenhuan roads to ensure longevity. Earlier, the Special Adviser on Projects, Phoebe-William Bello and the Commissioner for Works, Hon. Dr. Felix Akhabue, commended the governor for convening the meeting, describing it as a proactive step to directly engage contractors and fast-track project delivery, especially during the dry season. Speaking on behalf of the contractors, Mr. Nazilh Nasr of NAFRO Nigeria Limited, handling the Benin Technical Road project, praised Governor Okpebholo for prompt payments. He noted that although the project was initiated under the previous administration, the governor directed its continuation and has consistently honoured payment obligations. " I want to thank the Governor for this opportunity and to say the previous government delayed our payment but since this administration, our payment has always been paid and you don't owe us". he said Other dignitaries at the meeting included retired General Cecil Esekhaigbe, APC leader for Esan Central Senatorial District, and Mr. Sylvester Aigbobo, APC State Deputy Chairman, among others. The meeting ended with a renewed commitment by the contractors to accelerate work, adhere strictly to approved designs and quality standards, and maintain open communication with the Ministry of Works for timely intervention where challenges arise.

Budget Transitions, Overlapping Appropriations, and Alignment with the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) This briefing note draws the attention of the Federal Executive Council to the fiscal management implications arising from the continued implementation of the 2024 budget into 2025, the delayed implementation of the 2025 budget despite its passage, and the passage of the 2026 budget in December 2025, which creates the risk of overlapping budget authorisations in 2026. The purpose is to support informed decision-making and promote orderly budget transitions consistent with the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework. The MTEF is intended to provide a stable three-year fiscal framework that links government policy objectives to realistic macroeconomic assumptions and annual budget allocations. Its effectiveness depends on timely commencement and orderly closure of annual budgets. Prolonged reliance on earlier budgets or delayed activation of newly passed budgets weakens this linkage and reduces the credibility of fiscal planning. From an economic management perspective, extended budget overlap creates policy misalignment. Budgets prepared under earlier macroeconomic conditions, particularly assumptions on inflation, exchange rates, energy prices, and debt servicing costs, become less effective when implemented far beyond their intended period. This can lead to unplanned adjustments, reduced policy impact, and weaker control over public expenditure. Capital expenditure is particularly affected by delayed and overlapping budgets. Projects approved under earlier cost assumptions face rising input prices and financing constraints, resulting in slow execution, contract variations, and extended completion timelines. These delays reduce the developmental impact of public spending and weaken the intended growth and employment benefits of capital investments. Overlapping budget implementation also complicates fiscal monitoring and debt management. When residual commitments from earlier budgets run alongside new appropriations, it becomes more difficult to clearly assess the fiscal position, manage deficits, and align borrowing with medium-term fiscal targets. This may increase reliance on short-term financing and reduce fiscal flexibility. Predictability in budget implementation is also important for private sector confidence. Government contractors, suppliers, and investors rely on timely budget releases and clear expenditure priorities. Prolonged uncertainty can delay payments, affect liquidity in the private sector, and discourage investment, with wider implications for economic activity. In line with MTEF best practices, it is advisable for government to prioritise the timely commencement of each fiscal year’s budget, ensure clear closure or ring-fencing of prior-year commitments, and align all annual appropriations strictly with updated macro-fiscal assumptions and approved expenditure ceilings. Transitional spending, where unavoidable, should remain limited in scope and duration and be clearly disclosed. In addition, to prevent the practical and economic challenges associated with operating multiple budgets concurrently in 2026, the Executive and the Legislature may consider a structured merger of the 2025 and 2026 Appropriation Acts. Under this approach, the unimplemented provisions of the 2025 budget would be reviewed, updated, and integrated into the 2026 appropriation framework, allowing expenditure priorities to be rationalised, duplication eliminated, and cost assumptions aligned with current macroeconomic realities. A consolidated budget framework would provide a single, clear basis for implementation, monitoring, and accountability in the next fiscal year, while preserving the policy intent already approved by the Legislature. In conclusion, orderly budget transitions are essential for effective fiscal management, economic stability, and development outcomes. Strengthening coordination around budget implementation, including consideration of a consolidated appropriation framework where necessary, will enhance the credibility of the MTEF, improve expenditure efficiency, and support the Federal Government’s broader economic and development objectives. ⸻ Rt. Edo State Government has begun move to release bona fide students of the Ambrose Alli University who were remanded to Correctional Centre for protesting against incessant kidnapping in Ekpoma, Esan West local government area. The students were among 52 persons arrested and subsequently remanded to the Ubiaja Correctional Centre. Governor Monday Okpebholo deployed Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, to facilitate release of the students. Speaking to journalists at the Ubiaja Correctional Centre, Dr. Iyamu said bona fide students of AAU would walk home free after all processes were perfected. He said last week's violent protest in Ekpoma was orchestrated by a group identified as the 'Comrade Association'. Dr. Iyamu noted that the Comrade Association comprised of former students who used any opportunity to latch on to cause mayhem. He said, "There is a lot of misinformation going around especially on the social media. I wonder how a protest will occur without the authorisation of the Student Union Government. The school is not in sessions and the students were not involved. "We have a group tagged the Comrade Association that coopt students to carry out the dastardly act. There was no letter written to the security about any protest. "These are ex-students of the university looking for an opportunity to latch on any problem and cause mayhem. They went to the House of the traditional ruler, took indomie and other things. That character does not depict students. His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has said that any bona fide students be release and walk home free" President of the AAU SUG, Osadebamwen Ehizojie, commended the Governor for ensuring release of the students. He said AAU students did not start the protest adding that it was hijacked by hoodlums. |
Insecurity: Group blames Police Commissioner, Exonerates Gov Okpebholo A Socio-Cultural group in Edo State, Esan Akhugbe Otiti social cultural group has called on the Edo state Police Commissioner, Monday Agbonika, to urgently address cases of kidnappings in Esan land. Iyere blamed the lingering security challenges in Ekpoma and parts of Edo Central Senatorial District on the Nigeria Police and other security agencies In a statement by Mr. Iyere Sunday, it's President, the group insisted that the Edo State Government, under Governor Monday Okpebholo, has demonstrated clear commitment to tackling insecurity. The President added that the security agencies, particularly the Police Commissioner, must step up his game because massive investments had been made to support security operations across the state, particularly in Edo Central. According to him, we have it on records because I was physically present when the Governor in November last year, donated 10 brand-new Toyota Hilux patrol vehicles to the Nigeria Police Force, Irrua Area Command. "During the handing over of the vehicles, the governor warned that the vehicles must strictly be used to strengthen patrols and rapid response within the senatorial district. "This donation was in addition to the earlier provision of 100 Hilux patrol vehicles to security agencies across Edo State in the early days of the administration. "Beyond the vehicles, over 400 motorbikes were also donated to security agencies to enhance mobility, especially in hard-to-reach areas. With all these resources, security is supposed to improve significantly. "So, why are we blaming the governor for everything? Did the security agencies in Edo Central not also receive the intervention?” He further pointed out that the state government recently launched decisive security actions through the Edo State Special Security Squad, code-named Operation Flush Out Kidnappers and Cultists, which carried out raids in Uromi, leading to the demolition of houses linked to cultism and kidnapping. He said, "The government has shown seriousness. If houses linked to cult activities and kidnapping can be identified and demolished, how can anyone say the government is not doing anything. Rather,we should be asking the CP where are these investments." Iyere also highlighted the recruitment and training of over 2,500 local vigilante operatives by the state government, many of whom were absorbed into the Edo State Security Corps. He stressed that Edo Central benefitted substantially from the initiative, describing it as one of the largest grassroots security interventions in the state’s history within such a short time of an administration in office. To further underscore his point, the Esan group leader referenced a recent incident in Jattu, Etsako West Local Government Area, where nine kidnapped victims were rescued by local vigilante operatives. “These are vigilantees who received similar training across the state. If they can rescue kidnapped victims in Jattu, it means the strategy works. "The question now is, are the conventional security agencies doing enough with the resources and support available to them?” he queried. Iyere argued that while the government must continue to support security agencies, the agencies themselves must be held accountable for operational lapses. “Why are people not asking the police commissioner and other security agencies questions? Government provides vehicles, motorcycles, trained manpower and logistics, but implementation lies with the security agencies. "We must be honest enough to say everyone has a role to play,” he asked. He called on communities to also support security efforts by providing timely and credible intelligence, stressing that security is a collective responsibility. “I think we should be ready to do our part, just as the government is doing its part. Blaming the governor alone will not solve the problem. "Accountability, cooperation and sincerity from all stakeholders are what we need to secure Esan land and Edo State at large,” Iyere concluded," he concluded. |
Okpebholo vows to tackle kidnapping in Edo Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has vowed to tackle the challenges of insecurity, particularly kidnapping, in the state. The goernor made the vow while co condemning the attack on the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma, His Royal Highness, Zaiki Anthony Ehizojie Abumere II, following a protest in Ekpoma that resulted in the blockage of a major highway and widespread destruction of property. According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr Patrick Ebojele, the governor stated this when he visited the palace to personally assess the damage allegedly caused by protesters who invaded the traditional institution under the guise of expressing grievances over insecurity. Governor Okpebholo was accompanied by top government officials, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), including the state chairman, Emperor Jarrett Tenebe; Edo Central Senatorial leader, General Cecil Esekhaigbe (rtd); and other party stakeholders. During the visit, the governor was taken round the palace and shown several items destroyed during the invasion. Vehicles within the palace compound were vandalised, while canopies and chairs were broken. Cartons of Indomie noodles belonging to the Enojie’s wife, who trades in the product, were also destroyed. Doors and windows of the palace were damaged. Governor Okpebholo described the invasion of the palace and the looting of property as criminal and unacceptable, stressing that protests must never be used as an excuse for lawlessness. “Kidnapping is a serious problem across Nigeria, and that is why the President has taken bold steps, including withdrawing police from VIP duties, to strengthen the fight against insecurity,” he stated. He disclosed that a security meeting was held earlier in the week with a strong focus on Edo Central Senatorial District, particularly the Ekpoma axis, adding that the government had rolled out strategic, technology-driven security operations. “We have carried out operations in Edo North and Edo South, and now we are in Edo Central. We will leave no stone unturned. "The first operation was very successful—nine kidnapped persons in Etsako West were rescued unhurt and the kidnappers were arrested,” he stated. Governor Okpebholo warned that those who hijacked the protest to vandalise the palace and loot property would be brought to justice. “They came under the guise of protest and sentiments, then resorted to looting and violence. This is unacceptable. We will go after them the same way we are going after kidnappers. Nobody should test our patience,” he said. Emphasising his personal stake in the peace of Ekpoma and Esan land, the governor added, “I am an Esan man and I got my highest votes here in Ekpoma. "I will not allow bad things to happen in this land. In the coming days, our actions will speak for themselves. Nobody involved in this criminality will be spared.” Earlier, the Onojie Zaiki Anthony Ehizojie Abumere II, described the incident as unfortunate, alleging that many of the protesters were under the influence of illicit drugs. “What transpired was very sad. Many of them were under the influence of drugs. If not for God’s intervention, something worse would have happened,” the monarch said. He explained that he attempted to address the protesters when they first arrived but was prevented from doing so. According to him, the protesters later returned while he was away attending a security meeting with other traditional rulers, forced their way into the palace, and unleashed violence.

Enang unveils plan to reform Nigeria's medical profession A Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Calabar (Unical), Ofem Enang, on Saturday unveiled plan to reform the Nigeria medical profession for better service delivery. Enang unveiled the plan in Calabar, while formally declaring his intention to lead the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) at the national level before doctors in the state. He said that the profession has been battered by poor welfare, insecurity, mass emigration, eroded earnings, and broken agreements by the government. According to him, the Nigerian medical profession has reached a breaking point. It is in view of this, that today I am unveiling an ambitious reform blueprint tagged “Renaissance 2026 – The Rebirth of Excellence". "The deepening crisis facing Nigerian doctors is not a failure of individuals but of systems and only bold, united, and reform-driven leadership can reverse the decline." He explained that Renaissance 2026 was built on five pillars, with doctors’ welfare as the foundation. He also vowed to work with the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to resolve salary arrears, promotion backlogs, unsafe work hours, allowance distortions and full implementation of collective bargaining agreements. The NMA presidential hopeful further said that there would be zero tolerance for assault, kidnapping, or killing of doctors. According to him, a country that cannot protect its healthcare workers cannot protect its people. He also promised to tackle long-standing housing and retirement challenges by advocating national mortgage schemes for doctors at single-digit interest rates. Enang further said that he would advocate for predictable pensions, post-retirement health insurance, and dignified exit pathways for senior colleagues. He said he would also ensure the strengthening of healthcare delivery through economic empowerment measures for private practitioners, including tax reliefs, fair electricity tariffs and renewable energy incentives. He further announced plans to champion a Bank of Medicine to provide low-interest funding for hospital expansion, equipment, and innovation. "If given the opportunity to lead the NMA, I will ensure the establishment of a Tertiary Healthcare Fund to sustainably finance teaching hospitals, residency training, research, and infrastructure. "I will also push for reforms to protect the integrity of medical training and global recognition of Nigerian qualifications," he said. Enang while addressing recent killings and kidnappings of doctors in Edo and Enugu state, expressed solidarity with affected families and colleagues, describing the incidents as evidence of worsening national insecurity. He also declared support for resident doctors amid renewed industrial tensions, and urged the federal government to honor all agreements reached with NARD to avert another healthcare shutdown. He further promised to reunite a fractured NMA, pursue transparent leadership, credible electoral reforms and a gradual transition to One Doctor, One Vote, while rebuilding the association’s moral authority and influence in national policy making. “This is not about ambition; it is about restoration,” he added. He therefore called on doctors at home and in the diaspora to support what he described as a movement to restore dignity, unity and excellence to the profession. |
Traders Lauds Okpebholo Over Oba Market Reconstruction Traders, business owners, and residents around the Oba Market axis in Benin City have commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for the impressive pace and quality of work on the ongoing reconstruction of Oba Market in Oredo Local Government Area of the state. Dr Patrick Ebojele, Chief Press Secretary to the governor stated this in a statement made available to newsmen in Benin on Sunday. According to the statement, the stakeholders described the intervention as timely and reassuring. They noted that the governor’s commitment and regular inspection visits to the project site have renewed confidence among traders who were previously displaced. The reconstruction being carried out under the Okpebholo-led administration, is progressing steadily, with the governor personally monitoring the level and quality of work to ensure that the project meets modern standards and is delivered within record time. Mrs. Faith Edos, a trader, said the market was in a deplorable state before the governor’s intervention, adding that the reconstruction has restored hope to traders and business owners. “Before Governor Okpebholo came in, this market was in a very bad condition. Today, we are happy because he has rescued the situation by rebuilding a market that will have modern facilities,” she said. Another trader, Mrs. Itohan Idamudia described the governor as a promise keeper, stating that traders were abandoned for years despite repeated assurances by the immediate past administration. “The Obaseki-led administration made several promises to rebuild this market, but nothing was done. Governor Okpebholo has shown that he is serious. Gradually, the market is taking shape, and we are grateful,” she said. Ebojele explained that the Oba Market, which is one of the major commercial centres in Benin City, was first gutted by fire in June 2020, destroying several shops and goods worth millions of naira. He noted that the inferno was caused by a faulty solar panel in one of the shops, which spread rapidly to other sections of the market. He said that the ongoing reconstruction, displaced traders are optimistic that the project will restore businesses and significantly boost commercial activities in the area and across Edo State. The governor's spokesman said upon completion, the revamped Oba Market is expected to be equipped with modern facilities, including 24-hour electricity supply, internet connectivity, a Primary Health Centre, and other amenities designed to enhance efficiency, safety, and convenience for traders and customers alike.

In this interview, Sen Gershom Bassey, who represented Cross driver South senatorial district, spoke on various issues ranging from his alleged defection rumour from PDP to APC or ADC, the rumour of contesting for governorship seat in 2027 to electoral reforms. *Excerpts* : *How did you feel about losing out on that Governorship contest after the 2027 election cycle?* I have spoken extensively about the 2023 elections. For me, it was a movement and the experience was bittersweet. It was bitter in some respects and sweet in others. The bitter aspect was that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a party I love deeply, made a fatal mistake that led to its near collapse in Cross River State. That error can be traced directly to decisions taken during the 2023 elections, and the results spoke for themselves. We lost the governorship, the deputy governorship, 22 House of Assembly seats, the Senate seats, and several House of Representatives seats. Virtually everything was lost. The only position the party managed to retain them was a Senate seat in the North, and even that was by a very narrow margin. Today, the North is also gone. This was particularly painful because the PDP was once a dominant force in Cross River State. The party produced three governors, consistently controlled between 90 and 100 percent of the House of Assembly, and held all National Assembly seats for many years. Before 2023, the last non-PDP candidate to win a National Assembly seat in the state was Florence Ita Giwa. After her, no other party had succeeded until 2023. All of that collapsed for one simple reason. The PDP failed to listen to the people. *What exactly went wrong ?* The strength of the PDP had always been its ability to listen to the people. Whether at the local government, councillorship, or state level, the party usually respected existing arrangements and sentiments. In 2023, however, the party became arrogant and assumed it could impose candidates on the people. The people of Cross River State were clear that power should rotate and that it was the turn of the South. That sentiment was widespread across the state, but the PDP ignored it and insisted that the ticket could come from anywhere.Times had changed, but the party did not adjust. By abandoning the very principle that guaranteed its success, it set itself up for failure. This, we lost woefully. *What was the sweet experience of losing an election?* The sweet part that Cross Riverians stayed true to the founding principles of the state. From the Calabar-Ogoja Accord, the understanding has always been that power should rotate among the senatorial districts. In 2023, many of us wondered if the people truly believed in zoning or if it was just political rhetoric. But the election results answered that question clearly. The people spoke loudly through their votes. The PDP, which picked its candidate from the wrong zone, lost overwhelmingly. Even its governorship candidate lost his own local government. Meanwhile, the APC, which respected zoning, swept the field. That made me very proud as a Cross Riverian. People from the North, Central, and South rallied behind the southern candidate because it was the South’s turn. That unity was remarkable. *There are concerns that Nigeria may be drifting towards a one party system. What is your reaction?* I am concerned, but I am not overly worried. History has shown that political dominance comes and goes. I strongly believe in multi- party democracy as enshrined in our Constitution. When constitutional principles are ignored so openly, there is little one can do beyond trusting that things will eventually correct themselves. I am a believer in a multi-party democracy in Nigeria. Politics is not all about grabbing power, but also an ample opportunity to ensure good governance in the society either through a coalition or a political party platform. Sometimes in politics you will see a party that has never taken over governance, but still remains relevant in the society. Go to the UK for example, you will see a party like the Green party or even the Liberal democrats. These are political parties that are not particular about power. Green party has not held power. Apart from the coalition they entered into with the Conservatives, yet people join them. Personally speaking, politics cannot just be the quest for power. If you take a politician like our President today, Bola Tinubu, he was in the then AD or ACN and someone once described him as the last man standing. Recall the 2003 elections, all the states in the southwest moved to the PDP, except Lagos state. Yet, Bola Tinubu did not move. We once had 28 PDP governors in this country. This same thing that is happening in APC now; its not new. It happened to the party, but Tinubu stayed behind. He held his ground across several electioneering circles; he did not move. He had enough friends in PDP to protect his interest, and had ample opportunity to also move to PDP, but he stood his ground on principle. That’s one of the things I respect Tinubu for; he is a man of principle. If you are copying someone, copy him well. So, for me, I am copying Tinubu on his principled stance on the issue of defection. I am copying his principled stance in politics. He is a principled politician. *What Efforts are being put in place to rebuild PDP* The PDP entered a phase of self-destruction after the elections, something unprecedented in my view. Much of it was driven from Abuja and aided by certain elements within the state. Personally, I have not made any dramatic moves. I have simply observed events. Politics has cycles, and this phase will end eventually. Many serious people have left the PDP, and the party today is only a shadow of what it once was. Still, some of us have remainednand continue to watch. *So do you think the PDP in Cross River State has any future?* Yes, there is a future for every political party. We may not clearly see that future right now, but it exists. The party will not implode. It will evolve, though the direction is not yet clear. *It is rumoured that you have plans to contest for political office in 2027* Not at the moment. I am not thinking about elective office right now. I am still watching. *How can you assess the APC government* The truth is that many Nigerians are suffering under current policies. This is not propaganda. It is a reality felt across all social classes. However, I do not believe in judging a government at halftime. Governments should be assessed at the end of their tenure. While expectations have not been met so far, we must wait and see how things unfold. *What pieces of advice do you have for the current APC government in view of economic hardships* In my opinion, the removal of fuel subsidy was rushed. If subsidy removal was inevitable, it should have been gradual and preceded by strong infrastructure, security, and social safety nets. Many governments across the world make policy reversals when necessary. A U-turn is not a failure. What matters is whether a policy works. Right now, the effects of subsidy removal are hurting citizens. *Political observers argue that there is urgent need for the Electoral Act amendments ahead of 2027* One major issue is the electronic transmission of results. The intention was to create a foolproof system where results from polling units uploaded to the IReV could be independently verified by the public and matched with results announced by INEC. In 2023, that system failed due to technical issues. One proposal is to codify the process into law rather than leaving it to regulations. Another issue is the exclusion of automatic delegates during party primaries. That gap in the law disenfranchised many party leaders. I hope the National Assembly restores automatic delegates. *What are your views on tax reforms?* I am not a believer in high taxation. It is better to have a broad tax base where people willingly pay than to impose excessive taxes. I have not studied the new tax law in detail, but I understand that the threshold for taxation has been raised, which is positive. However, blocking all tax loopholes without first providing basic services like electricity, water, and security can suffocate citizens. Government must allow people room to breathe. *There are speculations that you are about defecting to APC or ADC* I have no intention of joining the APC, though as a politician, I never say never. As for ADC, I have not defected. I am still in the PDP, but I am a sympathiser of the coalition movement. ADC is only one component of that coalition.I am a member of the coalition. I am very interested in the coalition. I am still in the PDP for now. But I urge the new coalition championed by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to embark on a self-cleansing exercise in order to reset her priority. The formation of the coalition was not a bad idea, but there is need to have square peg in a square hole in order for the group to achieve her set goals. When the coalition berthed in the state they were lots of enthusiasm. The ADC vehicle has some work to do; internal work to do so that the initial enthusiasm can be fully expressed Politics is not always about immediate power. Some parties may not win elections for years but still stand for principles. Bola Tinubu himself remained in opposition for several election cycles before becoming president. Standing by one’s principles sometimes matters more than chasing power. *How can you assess Governor Bassey Otu's administration so far* Of course, leaders often have a broader view of governance and may not always feel the direct impact of certain policies the way citizens do. Form the areas where I have had personal knowledge and could clearly assess progress are in security and infrastructure. There are noticeable improvements recorded in those sectors. However, he urged the governor to see criticism as a tool for growth rather than hostility, noting that while some criticisms may be misplaced or unconstructive, many contain valuable insights that can help leaders perform better. I advise against turning critics into enemies. Leaders should especially pay attention to criticism expressed in a respectful and constructive manner. Listening to dissenting voices would not only strengthen leadership but also promote inclusiveness and better decision making.

Edo Govt Condoles Family of Slain Doctor, Reiterates Commitment to Tackling Insecurity The Edo State government has described the recent abduction and killing of Dr Abu Momoh Tahir in Auchi as unfortunate, painful and deeply regretable, assuring the public that the incident does not deminish the resolve of the state to sustain and intensify its fight against kidnapping and other crime. In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Patrick Ebojele Ph.D, the government noted that the existential threat of kidnapping has become a worrisome issue that has taken more than a devoted attention of government. According to the statement, "But for our intervention and the quality of what we have invested in curbing kidnapping, the spate would have been more alarming than what we presently have." The statement quoted governor Monday Okpebholo to have said that his administration has relentlessly been providing solutions to several security challenges in the state "The peaceful and crime-free yuletide celebration is an indication of our commitment to making Edo state safe for all. The incident of the doctor's kidnap was quite unfortunate, painful, and regrettable, as it tended to cast a slur on our spirited efforts at addressing this challenge. Before the yuletide season, men of the Operation Rescue carried out a holistic bush combing exercise across Auchi, Agenebode, Okpella, Fugar, and Owan areas to expose kidnappers' den. "The exercise was not only successful, the number of persons arrested and being prosecuted presently underscored the extent of the exercise," he stated. He further stated that the Operation Rescue team was able to destroy quite a number of hide-outs of these kidnappers aside from the arrest, while some were also killed in the cause of fire power exchanges in the forests. "This is to make the point that the government is not resting on its oars, and the initial perennial incidences of kidnapping have been decimated to its lowest ebb. Our deliberate effort to nip the issue in the bud has yielded a lot of successes, and we are determined to make Edo safe for all. "What we expect from members of the Edo public is a show of solidarity and cooperation, particularly in the area of intelligence sharing with men of the Operation Rescue and other security agencies. "Security concerns are a function of both the government and the people they govern. It is a collective indulgence that should not be left in the hands of the government alone. "We feel pained as a government that the kidnappers claimed the life of Dr. Abu Momoh Tahir, at a time, we thought we had gotten to the safer corridor of our security engagement. "We will continue to improve on our effort to make Edo non-habitable for crimes and criminalities as we call on all to be vigilant around their environment at all times. "If anyone observes strange movements around their vicinity, appropriate report should be given to the law enforcement agents without delay. "We condole with the family of Dr. Abu Momoh Tahir over this avoidable death. We wish to assure the public that those who carried out this dastardly act will be fished out and made to face the full wrath of the law. They surely will not escape the long arms of the law," he concluded. |
“You Voted for Me for Development, Not Stories” — Okpebholo Restates Mission at Benin Town Hall Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has restated that his administration remains firmly focused on one mission: delivering visible, people-centred development across Edo State. The governor said the mandate given to him by Edo people was clear and non-negotiable, stressing that nothing would distract his government from transforming the state. According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele Ph.D, the governor spoke in Benin City at a town hall meeting with members of the Akpakomiza Movement for Tinubu, also known as Team FIGO-Connect. In the town hall meeting, Okpebholo reminded his supporters that their votes were cast with development in mind. “You voted for me for a reason, and that reason is the development of Edo State,” the governor declared. “I have a clear vision to move Edo from an ancient city to a modern city, and I am not losing focus.” He explained that projects currently ongoing across the state are based on the real needs of communities, not personal or political interests, noting that his leadership style is guided by firsthand experience of the challenges faced by residents. Recalling a campaign visit to Temboga, the governor said the scale of gully erosion in the area left a lasting impression on him and influenced his development priorities. “I went to Temboga and I couldn’t even walk inside because of the depth of the gully erosion. I promised the people I would return if elected, and I kept that promise. Today, the results are visible,” Okpebholo said. He added that development should not be seen as a personal achievement of the governor but a collective success driven by the will of the people. “Without your votes, I wouldn’t be here. So there is no special thank you to me. What we are seeing today belongs to all of us,” he stated. On accountability, the governor noted that his administration receives the same statutory allocation as previous governments but has chosen to invest funds in projects with long-term impact. “Our work will speak for us. A time will come when Edo people will ask questions and demand accountability,” he said. Governor Okpebholo also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms, describing them as bold and people-focused. He cited the removal of fuel subsidy and recent tax reforms, noting that Nigerians earning below ₦150,000 are now exempt from paying tax. “Our president is carrying the common man along. Leakages have been blocked, and those who were feeding fat on the old system are now uncomfortable,” he said. He listed ongoing projects such as the durable reconstruction of Sapele Road, erosion control and road works in Ogheghe, as well as interventions in long-neglected public schools, as proof of his administration’s commitment to sustainable development in Edo State. The meeting was attended by the Edo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Emperor Jarrett Tenebe; Commissioner for Energy and Water Resources, Barrister Washington Osifo; members of the Edo State Executive Council; and other party leaders. Also present were members of the Labour Party’s Obedient Movement, who announced the collapse of their structures in Edo State and declared support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. Speaking on behalf of the group, Edo State Obedient Movement coordinator, Comrade Ikhuenbor Felix Igbinevbo, said the decision was based on confidence in President Tinubu’s reform agenda. “About 95 percent of those here are members of the Obedient Movement and Labour Party stakeholders. We supported Peter Obi in 2023, but we have resolved to support President Tinubu for a second term because we believe his reforms will benefit the common man,” he said. The town hall ended with renewed assurances of support for Governor Okpebholo, as participants pledged to work together to sustain development and economic growth across Edo State. |
Traders, motorists and residents around Ikpoba Hill and Ramat Park axis in Benin City have expressed strong support for the ongoing construction of the first flyover bridge in Edo State under the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo. They described the project as a major boost to economic activities, traffic flow and urban renewal. Speaking to journalists recently on the impact of the project, Mr. Lawrence Agwanhima said the flyover would significantly improve both the economy and aesthetics of the area. “It will improve the economy of this environment and also improve the beauty of this place. Before now, movement here was difficult, but this flyover is a good one. Let the governor continue the good work. God will bless him throughout his tenure,” he said. Addressing concerns about hoodlums occupying spaces under the bridge, Agwanhima dismissed such fears, noting that similar challenges existed even before the project and should not be used to stall development. Also speaking, Mrs. Ese Juliet said the flyover would bring lasting relief to the persistent traffic congestion experienced along the Ikpoba Hill axis, particularly on market days. “There is always traffic on this road, especially during market days. As it is now, we thank God that traffic will reduce after the bridge. My advice to the government is that they should try and complete it on time and also expand the road so that traffic will not return,” she said. A fresh chicken seller at Ramat Park, Master David Okhaishebor, a student of Army Day School described the flyover as an innovative intervention that would ease movement and improve business activities. “The flyover is good. We thank the governor for the innovation. At least, hold-up will reduce and cars, Keke and other vehicles will move smoothly. It will be good if the bridge is fenced so that people without homes will not sleep under it and mess up the place,” he added. Mr. Chijioke Akaru, who has operated a pharmacy shop at Ramat Park for over 30 years, said the project would have a positive economic impact on the state. “The flyover they are doing will improve the economy of Edo State and reduce go-slow at Ikpoba Hill. I thank the state government for this. I have been here for more than 30 years and I know what traffic has done to businesses here,” he stated. The Ikpoba Hill flyover is a flagship infrastructure project of the Governor Monday Okpebholo-led administration, aimed at easing traffic congestion, boosting economic activities and improving the overall outlook of Benin City. Residents remain hopeful that timely completion of the project will further enhance mobility and support sustainable development across Edo State. |
