Nigeria is home to two respected national dog clubs with international recognition, each making impactful contributions to the growth of responsible dog breeding and ownership:

1. Nigeria Dog Breeders Union (NDBU)

The Nigeria Dog Breeders Union (NDBU) holds the honor of being the first national dog club in Nigeria to be officially recognized by an international cynology federation — the World Dog Federation (WDF). NDBU stands for inclusivity, education, and global opportunities for Nigerian dog breeders and owners. Key highlights include:

Affiliation with the World Dog Federation (WDF), giving members global credibility.

No breed restrictions – all dog breeds are accepted, including commonly restricted breeds like Pitbulls.

Registration of both pedigreed and non-pedigreed dogs, providing every dog the chance to be documented and assessed.

Access to internationally recognized resources and WDF studbooks, enabling proper documentation and global recognition of Nigerian dogs.

Opportunities for Nigerian dogs to participate in WDF international dog shows, giving breeders and handlers global exposure.

Assessment and evaluation of all dogs, regardless of pedigree status, based on structure, temperament, and overall health.

COBA is another notable national dog club in Nigeria, affiliated with the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI). It offers:

Pedigree and kennel registration services under FCI standards.

Adherence to FCI breed guidelines, which may restrict registration or participation for certain breeds like Pitbulls.

Access to international resources and recognized studbooks, particularly for FCI-accepted breeds.


Both NDBU and COBA are respected organizations, but NDBU leads with a more inclusive and flexible approach, opening the door for all breeds and both pedigreed and non-pedigreed dogs to thrive and gain international recognition.
