Why do defenders pay too much attention marking the opponent during set pieces

Why not target the ball and be the first to it?

When you focus too much on the opponent you are reacting to everything but if you get to the ball fisrt then you can head the ball out of danger before your opponent does anything with it

Look at Portugal, Ronaldo who is their best player in heading the ball defends the first post to make sure he heads the ball out of danger first

Why can’t Simy Nwankwo do same for us and defend the first post?

He got friendly games to correct the mistakes. I watched their friendly match against England and Czech Republic and both goals were from set piece. A sensible coach will hold extra training sessions in private for his boys to work on their mistakes

The problem we have with our set piece defending is everyone is reacting to opposition players

No one is trying to get to the ball first. Attack the ball and get their first and your goal won’t be in danger

Instead of using Etebo in attacking midfield, he was using Mikel. A good coach will use this same team and make a better mark.

Leon Balogun played well even though his fitness was in doubt

Leon’s defending was not perfect but his passing was good

Troost-Ekong is poor at passing

When Keshi, Siasia, Oliseh handled the Super Eagles Nigerians were clamouring for a foreign coach. But now it is obvious that some of our indigenous coaches are better than these so called foreign coaches.

The trio I mentioned above are far better than this Rohr.

My only problem with this team is musa and mikel starting, I prefer iwobi from attacking midfield role while kelechi for musa, and etubo to partner ndidi. Etubo was basically our best player.

Iwobi has no fighting spirit, sometimes you need players with the drive to fight in order to win a match

Musa may not be the best technically but his pace is more dangerous than Iwobi’s passing. It is easier to defend against Iwobi than Musa. I would rather defend against Iwobi than Musa. Iwobi is predictable.

Even the pundits on BBC pointed out that Nigeria looked better in a 3-5-2 in second half against England and wondered why the manager went back to 4-3-2-1

He got everything wrong. From formation to team selection.

1. He benched Iheanacho and started a lacklustre Ighalo.
Ighalo is slow and lacks composure. His decision making in the final third is wack.
He was very wasteful.

I dont need to talk too much about Nacho.
Everybody saw the impact he made and he made his presence felt within the few minutes he played.

2. Playing Iwobi on the wing.
A costly mistake. Iwobi is not a winger. He's an attacking midfielder. A no 10.
Why play Iwobi on the wing when you got a natural winger like Musa

3. Playing Mikel as a no 10.
Mikel is not an attacking midfielder. The no 10 spot belongs to Iwobi.
Mikel was slow and lacklustre.
He was one of the worst players on the pitch.
He should have played his natural position as a CDM or rather sit on the bench.
Mikel was the worst mid fielder on the pitch.
Etebo and Ndidi played better than him.
So much for being a captain huh

4. Benching Tyronne Ebuehi.
Tyronne is our best right back. He got pace. He can attack well and with his speed, he can quickly back track when Croatia start a counter or those annoying long balls.
Shehu was slow.
Moses had to back track and play wing back just to cover Shehu's ass.
Croatia targeted Shehu's wing many times.
Modric was always crossing long balls to the right wing and Perisic always gets the ball leaving Shehu on the back foot.
Next time play Ebuehi and bench Shehu.

6. Set Peice.

Nigeria is weak at set peice.
Our first goal was conceded from a set peice and the second goal (a penalty) was conceded after Croatia took a another set peice.

This is not the first time Nigeria is conceeding from set peice.
They did it against England.
Nigeria should work at defending set peices.
It is their major weak spot.

7. Lack of pace.
Our players are slow.
Ighalo is slow as a snail.
Moses was back tracking to cover Shehu's ass.
Iwobi played out of position.
There is ZERO pace in that team.
Our pacey players like Ebuehi and Musa were on the bench and that constributed to our failure as there was no one to inject speed to the attack.

I agree with most of what you said. I am very disappointed in Rohr. They should sack him after World Cup. We need a coach that wants to win.

Iwobi is being relied on too much. He does not have the drive and fighting spirit to carry the hopes of Nigeria

Gernot Rohr is not very clever

The set pieces were not exclusive events, the corner kicks came about because we did not control the game. May be in a 3-5-2 formation those corner will not have happened at the time they happened

Omeruo played in Middlesbrough and has experience of defending long balls. He is also a World Cup veteran but somehow not good enough to start. Please we need Omeruo in a 3 man back line

Ahmed Musa is a key player for us. We need his pace for 90 minutes, not 20 minutes. Another World Cup veteran sitting on the bench. He scored 2 against almighty Argentina at the last World Cup

Lack of wing play killed us. Iwobi is not a winger

We need Ebuehi, Musa, Moses in the pitch to give us some pace
