EducationHow Vishing Works: FCMB - Why They Target The Elderly by Neictraema(op): 12:43am On Jun 27, 2020
1. A customer receives a phone call from a local number, claiming to be calling from FCMB.
2. The fraudster confirms your account name, date of birth and BVN, and then claims that your BVN has some issues that needed to be fixed immediately for you to continue to operate your account.
3. The fraudster then requests for customer’s debit card details including PAN (16-digits number in front of the card), Security (3-digit security code also at back of the card), Expiry Date and debit card PIN.
4. The unsuspecting customer shares these details after which the fraudster initiates an online transactions with the customer's card.
5. The fraudster then calls again to retrieve the one-time password (OTP) sent to customer's registered telephone line to authorize the transaction, while pretending to need the OTP to finalize resolution of the bogus issue.
6. Few minutes later, the customer is shocked to see debit alerts, and his account emptied.

My opinion:
These criminals are always evolving and changing tactics. So, pause before you click, think before you download. And consider speaking with elderly people (or anyone for that matter) in your circle that may get excited when they heard their banker is calling them.

PoliticsNNPC That Can’t Fix Refineries Wants To Build Hospitals - (bloomberg) by Neictraema(op): 2:12pm On Jun 11, 2020
For decades, Nigeria’s state oil company couldn’t maintain refineries meant to ensure domestic fuel supply, forcing Africa’s biggest producer to rely on imports. Now it wants to build hospitals to attend to the health needs of the country’s more than 200 million people.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. indicated this shift of focus when it announced plans on Tuesday to build health institutions in 12 of the country’s 36 states at the cost of 21 billion naira ($54 million), part of a new package of non-oil investments that also includes housing and power. The hospitals venture is part of its response to the dearth of health facilities in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
It’s also among “measures to cope with the boom and bust cycle in the global crude-oil market and to sustain revenue generation,” the company, also known as NNPC, said in a statement.
The oil firm seems to be hinting that it’s learned the lessons taught by the collapse of crude prices caused by loss of demand and the subsequent price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia. With the state overly dependent on oil, for more than 50% of revenue and 90% of export earnings, President Muhammadu Buhari found his budget plans in tatters as oil fell to a 21-year record low in April.
NNPC, which manages Nigeria’s oil interests with international energy companies, has on its own struggled with financial health for more more than 25 years. Apart from frequently missing its capital obligations in joint ventures, it has among the highest oil-production costs globally and has been saddled with cash-guzzling, dilapidated refineries for years.
At the moment, the state producer is struggling to find buyers for its crude despite huge price discounts, with most of Europe, its primary market, only starting to reopen after three months of lockdown to combat the coronavirus. A situation that perhaps spurred more creative thinking at the Nigerian oil behemoth.
“We do have a lot of non-core business that would be expanded through effective collaboration and partnerships with the private sector,” said Roland Ewubare, the company’s chief operating officer for ventures and business development.
Among the new pathways to health unveiled by Group Managing Director Mele Kyari is a plan to trim production cost to $10 per barrel, revamp the refineries for restart in 2023, seek opportunities in power and housing, and, of course, build the hospitals.

SportsLa Liga Restarts Today With Seville, Real Betis Clash by Neictraema(op): 10:26am On Jun 11, 2020
Sevilla and Real Betis is the game in Spain most defined by its fans and on Thursday it will be the first glimpse of La Liga without them as the season resumes behind closed doors after three months away due to the coronavirus.
Fireworks, banners, plumes of smoke and crowds, delirious at the sight of a team bus, let alone a goal, the Seville derby is a fixture renowned for its intensity and cherished by its supporters.
There will be 110 games held in 39 days, with clubs playing every three days for five and a half weeks, but none for the rest of the season will be as much of a stark reminder of what is missing.
“We can’t wait to return to competing,” said Sevilla coach Julen Lopetegui on Wednesday.
“In circumstances that three months ago were unimaginable but today it is the reality and we have to adapt.
“The derby is going to be played and we all know what it means. We have to respond.”
At the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, where Sevilla had only lost two league games this season in front of their fans, the stands will be empty, except for officials and substitutes, who will be stretched out across rows to maintain social distancing.
For those watching on television at home, the stands can be full, with virtual faces planted in place of vacant seats and fake crowd noise, taken from the computer game FIFA, ebbing and flowing according to the action.
La Liga’s hope is to pitch the restart as a celebration.
“Volver es Ganar”, has been the league’s slogan, “To Return is to Win”, and there is excitement around football’s return, to go with the relief in recent weeks as the number of deaths and infections have fallen.

Politics43% Of World’s Poor People Live In Nigeria, Two Others – World Bank by Neictraema(op): 2:50pm On Jun 10, 2020
Global economic growth could rebound next year but the number of people living in extreme poverty is expected to remain unchanged after a huge surge this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the World Bank warned Tuesday.
The bank said three countries (India – 24%, Nigeria – 12%, DR Congo – 7%) with the highest shares of the world’s extremely poor are not projected to grow faster than their population, meaning that extreme poverty will remain at the elevated 2020 levels through 2021.
The projection came after the Washington-based development lender said Monday the pandemic could drive between 70 and 100 million people into extreme poverty in 2020 as the global economy faces its worst recession in 80 years.
Before the pandemic, extreme poverty – defined as living on $1.90 per day – had been decreasing.
The bank expects growth to rebound by four percent in 2021.
“Nigeria, India and the Democratic Republic of Congo — three countries which we project are home to more than a third of the world’s poor – are predicted to have per-capita growth rates in real GDP of –0.8 percent, 2.1 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively.
“With population growth rates of 2.6 percent, 1.0 percent and 3.1 percent, this is hardly enough for sustainable decreases in the poverty headcount,” the World Bank said in a blog.
The bank warned “South Asia may see a larger increase in the number of poor as a result of COVID-19,” particularly in India.
Of the 176 million people expected to be pushed below the $3.20 per-day poverty line, two-thirds are in South Asia.

The price cap per liter in respect of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) is removed from the commencement of these Regulations.
The Federal Government has removed the cap on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) price, popularly known as petrol.

This was disclosed by the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) via a memo, which was dated March 30, 2020, but realised on May 4, 2020, titled ‘Market Based Pricing Regime for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) Regulations, 2020.

What it means: With the new development, marketers now have the freedom to fix the price of the commodity and sell above the price given by the agency.
Executive Secretary, PPPRA, Abdulkadir Saidu, explained that the agency would continue to monitor trends in the crude oil market and advise the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and oil marketers on the monthly guiding price for the commodity.
“The price cap per litre in respect of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) is removed from the commencement of these Regulations. From the commencement of these Regulations, a market-based pricing regime for PMS shall take effect,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nairametrics had reported that the agency announced a new retail price band for oil marketers.
In a circular dated May 31st, as seen by Nairametrics, the downstream regulator said oil marketers are now expected to sell petrol within the price range of N121.50 and N123.50.
Part of the circular said:
“Please recall the recently approved pricing regime which became effective March 19, 2020, and the provision for the establishment of a monthly price band within which petroleum marketers are expected to sell PMS at the retail stations.”

PoliticsTerrorising Bandits Signed Peace Accord But They Betrayed Us- Katsina Governor by Neictraema(op): 8:34am On Jun 05, 2020
Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, said on Wednesday that the peace accord his administration signed with bandits troubling the state had collapsed.
Masari had, on August 28, 2019, engaged representatives of bandits terrorising the eight frontline local government areas in the state. He said his visit was aimed at calling the attention of suspected bandits to respect the amnesty granted to them by his government.
But in an interview with the Hausa Service of the BBC on Wednesday, Masari said his administration would no longer engage in any negotiation or peace talks with bandits as they did not honour the agreement they signed.
The governor said in the agreement they signed with the state government, the bandits promised to repent and leave the north-western part of the country. Governor Masari stated that the bandits had betrayed the state as they could not honour the agreement.
Daily Trust reports that of recent, there have been increased attacks in various communities in Katsina that claimed the lives of many people while others lost their sources of livelihood.
Masari noted that he was the first governor to have signed an agreement with bandits saying until recently, the bandits had honoured the agreement.
“We chose to sign a peace agreement with the bandits to avoid loss of lives and property, but it didn’t yield a positive result. This time around, we will hand it over to security personnel.
“In our efforts to honour the agreement between us, we cancelled all vigilantes and volunteer groups and we allowed them (bandits) to continue with their normal activities in the state,” he said.

PoliticsFG May Lift Ban On Interstate Movement On June 21 by Neictraema(op): 6:09pm On Jun 04, 2020
The Federal Government may lift the ban placed on interstate movements on June 21, 2020.
This was disclosed by special adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on new media, Bashir Ahmad on Thursday via his Twitter handle.
He stated, “Interstate movement may resume on June 21, the National Coordinator of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, Dr Dani Aliyu, gave the hint recently, as domestic flights expected to resume on June 21.”
Meanwhile, the FG last Monday, June 1, 2020, announced a cautious advance into the second phase of the national response to COVID-19. As part of the measure in the new phase, the FG has announced the full reopening of the financial sector.
This was announced by the national coordinator of the presidential task force on COVID-19, Dr Aliyu Sani. He said that the banks will now be allowed to operate at normal working hours five days a week as against the restricted time of 2 or 3 pm that was announced during the first phase of the easing of lockdown.
The Presidential Task Force also gave the green light to hotels to reopen but must do so based on the guidelines rolled out by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). They are to maintain non-pharmaceuticals intervention. However, gyms, cinemas, parks, nightclubs and bars are to still remain closed until further evaluation.
The restaurants, other than those in hotels must remain closed to eat-ins but are allowed to prioritize and continue to practice the takeaway measure that has been in place since the first phase.

PoliticsGerman Stimulus Package Hands Families €300 For Each Child - Nigeria Why!!! by Neictraema(op): 1:31pm On Jun 04, 2020
Germany's coalition government has agreed a €130bn (£114bn) fiscal stimulus package which cuts tax and hands €300 per child to every family.
The move is designed to kick-start the economy which has been severely hit by the coronavirus crisis.
Germany is heading for its worst recession in 70 years with GDP expected to shrink 6.3% this year.
"We must now succeed in boosting the economy," said Chancellor Angela Merkel.
She said the fact that Germany had seven million temporarily furloughed workers "shows how fragile the situation is".
As well as a cut in VAT and cash for families with children, the measures include new incentives for buying electric cars.
The package was announced late on Wednesday after 21 hours of negotiations between the partners in Mrs Merkel's governing grand coalition - which comprises her own Christian Democratic Union, its Bavarian sister party the CSU, and the left-of-centre Social Democrats.
Boosting spending
To boost consumer spending, VAT will be cut from 19% to 16% from 1 July to 31 December this year, a move that will cost the German government €20bn alone.
Families will receive a one-time transfer of €300 for each child.
Meanwhile, those who buy electric cars will see the government rebate - an incentive designed to encourage consumers to switch to cleaner vehicles - doubled to €6,000.
Businesses will benefit too. Companies in sectors hardest hit by the crisis - such as hospitality, tourism and entertainment - will receive "bridging help" worth €25bn from June to August.
Restaurants, hotels or event management companies could get up to 80% of their fixed operating costs reimbursed if their revenues have plunged more than 70% compared to a year ago.
The new stimulus package comes on top of a €1.1 trillion rescue package agreed in March, which comprised loan guarantees, subsidies and a shorter-hours programme to avoid job cuts.
Mrs Merkel said the support programme would help "the economy to find its feet and grow again".

CelebritiesRegina Daniels Shows Off Baby Bump One Year After Marriage (billionaire)- VIDEO by Neictraema(op): 1:16pm On Jun 01, 2020
Lawyer and politician, Ned Nwoko, surprised his fans and well-wishers on Saturday, when he uploaded a picture of his young wife, Regina Daniels, lovingly cradling her baby bump on his Instagram page.

The post which had attracted thousands of comments at the time of filing this report read, “It is now official. I am excited to announce that my baby is having a baby.”

Well wishes have continued to pour in for the actress and social media celebrity, who constantly shows off her husband’s wealth and flaunts her extravagant lifestyle to her 7.6 million followers. Many celebrities have also congratulated the expectant mother. Actress, Chioma Akpotha wrote, “My baby is going to have a baby’’; Omoni Oboli added, “Oh wow!!! Congratulations baby.’’

Toyin Abraham simply wrote, “Congratulations my darling”; while social media comedian, Wofaifada, added the words, “Pregnancy fits you. Congratulations baby.’’

Another colleague in the movie industry, Ufuoma Mcdermott wrote, “Yay! This is wonderful news. Yes babe, you owe me one crate of cold malt for all this dance I’m dancing o. Congratulations babe.’’ Fashion designer and entrepreneur, Toyin Lawani, wrote, “Our baby is having a baby. I still kept your bouncing castle present from Children’s Day. Finally, we let the cat out of the bag; they didn’t see it coming.’’

On her part, the excited Daniels said it was an ‘unbelievable feeling’ to carry a child. “I find myself speaking to my tummy all day, staring at the mirror and still can’t believe it. This child is about to change my entire life Oh! How much I can’t wait’’, she wrote in part. Although this is the actress’ first child, her husband already has children from his other wives.

The couple, who got married in 2019, have no doubt enjoyed social media attention because of the age gap between them.

Although her age has been a topic of debate online, fans and critics alike have come to terms with the reality of Daniels’ marriage to her 59-year-old hubby.

SportsManchester United Extend Odion Ighalo’s Loan Deal by Neictraema(op): 1:05pm On Jun 01, 2020
The on-loan forward has agreed to extend his current deal which will keep him at Old Trafford for the rest of the calendar year
Manchester United have confirmed an extension to Odion Ighalo’s loan deal which will see him stay at the club until January 2021.

The striker arrived from Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua on a temporary loan deal on the final day of the January transfer window, to provide Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with cover for the injured Marcus Rashford who was sidelined with a back issue.

The Nigerian, who previously played for Premier League side Watford, impressed in his eight appearances before lockdown and the consequent postponement of football - scoring four goals in three starts - and the club were keen to extend his loan until the end of the campaign.
Discussions with Shenhua have been protracted, with the Chinese club keen to have their forward back for the start of the Super League season.

However, after weeks of negotiations, the two clubs agreed on a deal which will see Ighalo stay at Old Trafford on loan until the end of January 2021.

United have already had to pay Shenhua a loan fee for the initial five-month spell and it is understood the Chinese side will receive another payment from the Red Devils for the extended period.

While there have been no discussions to keep the 30-year-old at the club on a permanent basis, Solskjaer has been keen from the start to have Ighalo in his squad for the end of the season.

“It’s been a dream for him and hopefully he can finish off what he started, with a trophy for us,” Solskjaer told MUTV.
The Premier League is set to restart on June 17 and Solskjaer should have a fully-fit squad at his disposal with long-term absentees Rashford and Paul Pogba both completing their recovery during lockdown.

Ighalo’s loan extension means there will be a fight for places up front as well as in midfield, and it is a dilemma Solskjaer is looking forward to having.

“Everyone’s looking sharp, everyone’s been in with a good mood and we’ve been splitting up in groups, so [working in] fours and fives together, and they’ve really done well. So far it’s been good,” Solskjaer told MUTV about the players returning to training.

PoliticsEmbattled Afdb President, Adesina Dances To Bob Marley’s Song (video) by Neictraema(op): 1:26am On May 31, 2020
The President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina, who has been in the eye of the storm over recent allegations of corruption against him, has been seen in a video in circulation on social media singing and dancing away his troubles.

Adesina was seen in the midst of some friends dancing and singing to Bob Marley’s ‘three little birds” with the support of a live band in the background.

Quotable lyrics from the song says: “singing don’t worry about a thing, ‘Cause every little thing, gonna be alright. I won’t worry.”

Adesina, who is the first Nigerian to head the AfDB, was recently accused of unethical conduct and nepotism in his relationship with present and past employees of the institution.

It is however uncertain if the video was recorded before the allegations against him or after.
The former Nigerian minister and 2013 Forbes Africa Person of the Year has denied the allegations.

“In spite of unprecedented attempts by some to tarnish my reputation and prejudice the bank’s governance procedures, I maintain my innocence with regard to trumped up allegations that unjustly seek to impugn my honour and integrity,” Adesina had said in a statement.

“I am confident that fair, transparent and just processes that respect the rules, procedures and governance systems of the Bank, and rule of law, will ultimately prove that I have not violated the Code of Ethics of this extraordinary institution,” he said.

The report of an internal investigation by the AfDB had been rejected by the U.S government.
The board of governors of the multilateral development finance institution is now considering whether or not to bring in external investors to carry out fresh investigations into the matter.

Meanwhile, former presidents of fifteen African nations, including Nigeria’s ex-presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, have declared support for Adesina on Friday amid the allegations against him.

SportsMan Utd May Have Ighalo (for Now) by Neictraema(op): 1:10am On May 31, 2020
The Nigerian's current loan is set to conclude on Sunday but there is hope that he will be able to remain at Old Trafford until the end of 2020
Manchester United are continuing negotiations with Shanghai Shenhua over a loan extension for Odion Ighalo, with Goal learning that there is hope a deal can be agreed to keep him at Old Trafford until January 2021.
Former Nigeria international Ighalo arrived at United on loan on the final day of the January transfer window in a deal that would keep him at the club until May 31, when the season would have ordinarily come to an end.

The Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent postponement of football has seen clubs agree to temporarily extend the deals of out-of-contract players so as to allow them to play out the season.
United, however, have been locked in negotiations with Ighalo's parent club Shanghai Shenhua in a bid to extend his stay so, at the very least, he could see out the campaign upon its resumption on June 17.

Chinese Super League outfit Shenhua were keen to bring the striker back to prepare for the re-start of football in China, but a breakthrough in negotiations in the past week has given Ighalo hope of remaining in Manchester.

With his current deal set to expire on Sunday, it is understood that there is growing confidence a last-minute deal can be agreed to keep the 30-year-old at United until January. Negotiations are now centred around an extension until the new year, rather than just until the end of the current campaign.

United have already had to pay Shenhua a loan fee for the original deal, and the Chinese side would expect another instalment for the extended stay.

While sources say there is hope and confidence a deal can be found between all parties, the extension has yet to be fully agreed upon as the deadline ticks closer.

Odion Ighalo Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Manchester United 2019-20

Ighalo’s arrival in January was widely criticised as it went against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s revamped transfer strategy of recruiting young British players.

Article continues below
However, it was deemed a sensible move as a temporary solution to alleviate injury problems after Marcus Rashford was sidelined with a back injury.

Ighalo has in turn impressed for the club he supported as a child, scoring four goals in his three starts for the Red Devils.

And while Solskjaer is keen to bolster his attacking options in the upcoming transfer window, it is understood that a permanent deal for Ighalo is not being considered as the club explore other alternatives such as Timo Werner of RB Leipzig and Moussa Dembele of Lyon.

Music/RadioAfrica Day Benefit Concert Has A Host - Idris Elba by Neictraema(op): 7:20pm On May 25, 2020
Lagos, Nigeria (CNN)Some of Africa's biggest music stars are lined up to perform at a 2-hour long virtual concert on Monday to celebrate Africa Day.

Actor and musician, Idris Elba is hosting the concert titled 'Africa Day Benefit Concert at Home' through a partnership with music channel, MTV Base Africa, and YouTube.
Elba, who was diagnosed with Covid-19 in April says the concert is to "raise funds for those impacted by Covid-19."
All funds raised will go to the World Food Program and the UNICEF who are supporting coronavirus-affected communities across Africa, according to the statement from YouTube and ViacomCBS Network Africa (creators of MTV).
Africa has over 95,000 cases of the virus and 2,995 deaths resulting from it as of May 21.
The concert will feature performances from music acts like Benin's Angelique Kidjo, Kenya's Sauti Sol, South Africa's Sho Madjozi, and Nigeria's Burna Boy.
South African comedian Trevor Noah, reigning Miss Universe, Zozibini Tunzi, and rapper Sean Paul are also part of the concert's line up presenters, according to the organizers.
Africa Day is a celebration of the successes of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU now the AU) from its creation on May 25, 1963, in the fight against colonialism.
Different countries in Africa, as well as around the world celebrate the day annually.
Fighting the virus with music
Music has been a tool in the fight against coronavirus.
Since it hit the continent, music stars have created songs and dance moves to educate the public on its dangers.
Grammy award-winning Angelique Kidjo, who is also performing at the Africa Day benefit concert released a song in May to spread global awareness on the dangers of Covid-19.
The song "Pata Pata", a new version of a 1967 hit song by Miriam Makeba, was rerecorded by Kidjo urging people to keep their hands clean, stay at home, and avoid touching as ways to minimize the spread of the virus.
Similarly, Ugandan politician and pop star, Bobi Wine released music in March highlighting the importance of personal hygiene in the fight against the disease.
Alex Okosi, YouTube's Managing Director of Emerging Markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa says the concert wants to use African music to connect the world.
"YouTube is proud to be a platform for the amazing talent that have come to celebrate Africa Day and play a role in helping raise funds for those affected by Covid-19 on the continent," he said in a statement.
The concert will stream on the MTV Base Africa YouTube channel on Monday and air on the channel the same day.

SportsHappy Liverpool Failed To Match Invincibles - Wenger by Neictraema(op): 12:23am On May 24, 2020
The Frenchman has been out of coaching since leaving the Gunners in 2018 and has suggested that he may be finished with management
Arsene Wenger has ruled out making a return to Arsenal in any capacity and admitted to taking pleasure in seeing Liverpool fail to emulate the efforts of his ‘Invincibles’.

The Frenchman has been out of coaching since bringing a 22-year reign in north London to a close in the summer of 2018.

At that stage, the three-time Premier League title winner was expected to head back into management.
That has not been the case, with Wenger now filling his time with a role as FIFA’s head of global football development .

With that position taken into account, and with a clean break made at Emirates Stadium, the 70-year-old cannot see himself heading back to familiar surroundings.

Wenger told beIN SPORTS when asked if he'd return to Arsenal, even as a spectator: “Would I return to the Emirates Stadium? I always said to myself that I would be leaving Arsenal completely. That's the decision I made.”

Various directorial posts have been mooted for Wenger, but none will be filled at Arsenal.

The Gunners are, however, preparing to erect a statue of their legendary boss outside their home ground.

On that recognition of his achievements, Wenger said: “I managed the club for 1,235 games, I’ve had good and bad times there, but we always tried to defend the club’s values. And I think we managed to do it.”
The 2003-04 campaign could be considered Wenger’s greatest triumph, as Arsenal navigated an entire Premier League season unbeaten.

Nobody else has achieved that before or since, with Liverpool’s class of 2019-20 seeing their bid to match the Gunners come to a shuddering halt when suffering a shock 3-0 defeat at Watford in February .

“Yes, it was a form of satisfaction [to see Liverpool lose],” Wenger said.

“We always like to be the only ones to achieve something. They (Liverpool) could really go all the way. But it shows that it's difficult to repeat this feat. Anyway, that day, I had a lot of messages from Arsenal supporters.”
Wenger is enjoying watching competitive action from afar, with it possible that he is finished with the stresses of management.

Quizzed on whether he could return to the bench at some stage, he said: “At the moment, I am dedicating myself to my work at FIFA.

“FIFA has responsibility for 211 federations and the big problem is being efficient. I’m not saying I’m not missing competition, but I’m trying to be efficient in this area.”
