Business / I Just Lost 400k Revisited by Neictraema(f): 3:59pm On Dec 14, 2023
Against my own views that the rich don't give their formula away but start a foundation I am writing this! Not entirely sure why but I guess my ego or something. Hopefully this comes helpful.

I saw this post some weeks back where someone wrote he lost 400k from buying dollars (hint #1).

Not sure if the individual actually sold or was referring to what his/her dollar position is worth as at the time of the post (hint #2)

The individual then proceeded to seek for advice on what his next steps should be. Should sell or hold (hint #3)

My thoughts!

Hunt #1: Investing vs Speculating.

This individual was clearly speculating when he bought the dollars. No one should confuse this with investing. He was speculating that the downward trend of the naira against the dollar will continue. And there is nothing wrong or illegal about this.

To invest in dollars: he will need to know what is the historical net dollar [inflow minus outflow] requirements of Naija. (Note: stay clear of the government BS political numbers). What will effect either the inflows or outflows over his investment time horizon.

I am not sure he did this analysis. He caught FOMO, fear of missing out. Everyone around him telling him he made money from dollar raise and jumped on the boat.

#Do the research. Invest in what you know. It's amazing how people will take all their life saving made from salary or another business and put it into something they have no understanding of. Cos everyone is doing it.

Hint #2: Buy high, Sell low!

You only loss money when you SELL. Coincidentally, dollar is roughly back when it was when he made this post. So, if he had simply waiting and held his position, he would be fine today. Different to have the stomach for that when you have no idea what you are pregnant with, no!.
If you bought a land for #1M and a week later your neighbor comes and price it for #650,000. Will you sell? Most won't under normal circumstances.
If that crazy neighbor offers to sell his own land for an amount you believe is fair and you have extra cash, you may indeed buy his.
With dollars, the whole world is your neighbor, asking to buy/sell 247.

Hint #3: Investing!

You know why you are buying, your investment thesis.

Hopefully you did naira-cost-averaging, that is not invest everything at once but buy over certain regular intervals

You know why you are selling, eg, naija became a major export nation in 20XX.

You know clearly we're you are an expert in and where the boundaries lies.

You do the research when entering or assessing a new opportunity. Go ask your banker friend what is naira-dollar traffic at the least!

Romance / Re: New Marriage About To Crash. by Neictraema(f): 2:46pm On Aug 09, 2023
The problem is that you and your family think that because someone wants to marry you, he should bend to every of your wedding wishes... it's his wedding also, but for you. He is the source of the fund. And you father and you the wedding planners.

It takes wisdom to remember that after the wedding, comes marriage and how you live together, relationships with extended families.

Some in-laws have issues today and in some cases can't visit their grandchildren because of unreasonable demands during the wedding.

Politics / JUST IN: Actress Ada Ameh Is Dead by Neictraema(f): 12:37pm On Jul 18, 2022
Nollywood veteran actress, Ada Ameh, is dead.

The actress, known for her role as Emu in Africa Magic family drama, The Johnsons, died on Sunday night.

The President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Emeka Rollas, confirmed the news to The PUNCH via telephone on Monday morning.

“We lost Ada. No details at the moment, but we’ve lost Ada,” Rollas told our correspondent.

However, viral unverified reports on social media claimed that the actress died Sunday night at a hospital in Delta State.

She reportedly collapsed and eventually died in Warri, Delta State, at about 11 p.m. on Sunday.

Sources said she was a guest to an oil company worker and his family in the Delta metropolis when she passed.

It was gathered that she gave up the ghost on the way as she was being rushed to the nearby Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Hospital.

The NNPC hospital, Warri, is yet to make public the autopsy report of the likely cause or causes of Adah Ameh’s sudden death.

Also, the police public relations officer (PPRO) for Delta State Command, DSP Bright Edafe, could not be reached for comments at the time of filing this report.
A few weeks ago, the actress opened up about her mental health challenges.

“Everything is going to be fine. I have an issue right now, and it’s taking my life. I will not die. We will get over it,” Ameh had said.

The actress explained that she was given a job but could not carry it out because she was undergoing mental issues.

The 48-year-old actress had earlier revealed that she got pregnant with her daughter at 13.
According to her, this happened because peers introduced her to sex early.

Despite her early motherhood, the actress, in October 2020, lost her daughter, Aladi Godgift, who was over 30 years old.

Aladi had died after an unsuccessful surgery in Abuja, and the actress, last year, visited her daughter’s grave site to mark the deceased one-year remembrance.

She had also celebrated her daughter on the latter’s posthumous birthday.

Sports / Marcelo Could Miss Chelsea Trip As He Called Up To Monitor A Polling Station by Neictraema(f): 4:48pm On Apr 28, 2021
Real Madrid defender Marcelo could miss the second leg of their Champions League semi-final at Chelsea because he has been called up to monitor a polling station during local elections.

The elections for the Madrid assembly take place on Tuesday, 4 May.

Real, who were held 1-1 at home in the first leg, play the second leg at Stamford Bridge on the following day.

The Spanish club are "analysing the situation" to see if "any regulation will let him travel with the team".

The Brazil left-back started in Tuesday's game, which saw Chelsea come away with an away goal in a deserved draw against the 13-time European champions.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/56915346
Unless Marcelo is excused from his election-day duties, he will not be permitted to travel with the team the day before the game.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo report the club had appealed to the Electoral Commission, but the request was denied.

Why has Marcelo been called up?
All Spaniards on the electoral register can be called up to work at polling stations and are paid 65 euros (ÂŁ56), needing mitigating circumstances to be excused.

Marcelo, 32, was granted Spanish citizenship in 2011.

His predicament, while certainly one of the more unusual reasons to potentially miss out on a Champions League semi-final, is not unprecedented in Spanish football.

Levante goalkeeper Aitor Fernandez was named on a reserve list to attend a polling station in his hometown of Mondragon in 2019, when on the same day he was due to play a match against Athletic Bilbao.

He, however, was excused from polling duties and cleared to play.

Athletic Bilbao's Inaki Williams was also excused from working at a polling station in 2015 as voting clashed with a match against Levante.

Food / Jollof Is Cheaper In The South East - (SBM Intelligence) by Neictraema(f): 1:50pm On Jul 14, 2020
Data from Nigerian based research firm SBM Intelligence reveals it now costs N7, 240 on average to make a pot of Jollof rice in Nigeria a 6% rise from the same period in April.
Jollof rice is a staple delicacy in Nigeria and eaten daily by most lower, middle class and upper-class families. It is also a popular delicacy in West Africa.
According to the report, “the average Jollof Index for the country as at June 2020 was N7,240. This represents a six percent increase from the Q1 2020 figure which obtained when the index was last released in April. Half of the market, mainly in the South East and the South-South (minus Port Harcourt which had the second highest nationally) were below the national average.”

Key Indicators

- The data is sourced from markets in 13 cities within 9 states in Nigeria with Port Harcourt being the newest city.

- The report notes a remarkable disparity between the cities reporting Wuse II located in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory the highest city for cooking a pot of Jollof Index. It cost N9,300 or 59% more than the lowest, Calabar Municipal.

- The cost of rice, vegetable oil and turkey – three of the ingredients most impacted by the border closure policy – is the biggest driver of this disparity.

- The report cites the border closure as the main reason for the spike in the cost of making a pot of Jollof Rice.

- “A cursory look at the trendline of the Jollof Index will show that by late 2018, it started to decline and maintained this decline into the first quarter of 2019. This changed as the border closure policy was enacted in August 2019 and has been on the rise similar to the recessionary period of 2016 since then. The oil price decline and the COVID-19 pandemic pushed it further between March and May 2020 as prices rose due to the scarcity and increased demand during the lockdown.”
Nigeria has seen a spike in inflation rate in recent months following the government’s policies of border closure and denying forex for most importers. This is part of its program to reduce reliance on imported items particularly food items. A recent bi-weekly research conducted by Nairametrics also reveals significant spike in food prices across markets in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital.

In the Nairametrics report, prices of major household items such as vegetable oil, tomatoes, pepper, rice and several others have once again spiked across major markets. These are all ingredients in making a pot of Jollof rice. The price of a bag of 50kg Mama Gold rice increased marginally by 1.17% to sell for an average of N21,375. Mama’s Pride rice (50kg) also increased marginally by 0.59% to sell for an average of N21,125. A 50kg bag of Foreign rice now sells for an average of N28,500 compared to an initial average of N27,500 indicating a 3.51% increase in price.

The SBM Intelligence report also reveals rice was the most expensive ingredient in the delicacy. Others were groundnut oil, fish and tomatoes.

- From an SBM perspective, fish is not a part of the units used for measuring the Jollof Index, but given that the Calabar area is rich in seafood, fish is the preferred protein additive.

- This increase in the cost of making Jollof rice has made his family reduce the number of times they eat the delicacy. They now substitute with beans, plantain, and garri with soup.

Abuja costliest to cook Jollof Rice tongue
The report indicates Wuse II a major city in the FCT was the most expensive place to cook a pot of Jollof rice. Wuse II is home to most middle class Nigerians living in the capital city Abuja and fast becoming one of the busiest commercial cities in the country.

- According to the report “A respondent based in Abuja said that during the period of the pandemic, the cost of cooking Jollof rice has doubled. She added that she now uses fish in place of chicken or beef as these protein sources are now out of reach for her.

- This has reduced the number of times her family eats Jollof rice, and she substitutes spaghetti or beans.

Jollof is cheaper in the South East smiley
The report also indicates it is cheaper to make a pot of Jollof rice in the South-Eastern part of Nigeria. Prices in the South-South and South-East were below the national average.

- “In the South-East, a respondent said that over the course of the pandemic, the cost of jollof rice for her family of three has gone up from N1,000 to N2,500. She now substitutes her meal with a local vegetable salad known as Abacha.

Travel / Nigerian Govt Gives Update On Resumption Of International Flights by Neictraema(f): 9:43am On Jul 14, 2020
Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has said the federal government is not in a hurry to announce the resumption of international flights.
Sirika stated this while speaking during the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 yesterday.
The Minister made it clear that any decision taken would be in the interest of Nigerians.
He pointed out that several countries have not opened up for international flight operations and that Nigeria has not received clearance to fly to countries that are already receiving foreign visitors.
“Everyone is trying to keep safe. These and many other reasons will make us be cautious and study some more and liaise with stakeholders to decide when we will open international flights.
“Within the sector, we want to reopen because we are bleeding and losing money but we have to remain alive first before we make money. Whatever decision we take has to be in the interest of humanity in general,” Sirika said.
He also added that the World Health Organisation, the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) and other aviation stakeholders would be consulted before any announcement is made.

Crime / Hushpuppi Targeted An English Premier League Soccer Club - U.S Attorney’s Office by Neictraema(f): 8:48am On Jul 04, 2020
Nigerian National Brought to U.S. to Face Charges of Conspiring to Launder Hundreds of Millions of Dollars from Cybercrime Schemes
COMPLAINT

LOS ANGELES – A Dubai resident who flaunted his extravagant lifestyle on social media has arrived in the United States to face criminal charges alleging he conspired to launder hundreds of millions of dollars from business email compromise (BEC) frauds and other scams, including schemes targeting a U.S. law firm, a foreign bank and an English Premier League soccer club.

Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, 37, a.k.a. “Ray Hushpuppi” and “Hush,” a Nigerian national, arrived in Chicago Thursday evening after being expelled from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Abbas made his initial U.S. court appearance this morning in Chicago, and he is expected to be transferred to Los Angeles in the coming weeks.

Abbas was arrested last month by UAE law enforcement officials. FBI special agents earlier this week obtained custody of Abbas and brought him to the United States to face a charge of conspiring to engage in money laundering that is alleged in a criminal complaint filed on June 25 by federal prosecutors in Los Angeles.

According to an affidavit filed with the complaint, Abbas maintains social media accounts that frequently showed him in designer clothes, wearing expensive watches, and posing in or with luxury cars and charter jets. “The FBI’s investigation has revealed that Abbas finances this opulent lifestyle through crime, and that he is one of the leaders of a transnational network that facilitates computer intrusions, fraudulent schemes (including BEC schemes), and money laundering, targeting victims around the world in schemes designed to steal hundreds of millions of dollars,” according to the affidavit.

The affidavit describes BEC schemes as often involving a computer hacker gaining unauthorized access to a business’ email account, blocking or redirecting communications to and/or from that email account, and then using the compromised email account or a separate fraudulent email account to communicate with personnel from a victim company and to attempt to trick them into making an unauthorized wire transfer.

“BEC schemes are one of the most difficult cybercrimes we encounter as they typically involve a coordinated group of con artists scattered around the world who have experience with computer hacking and exploiting the international financial system,” said United States Attorney Nick Hanna. “This case targets a key player in a large, transnational conspiracy who was living an opulent lifestyle in another country while allegedly providing safe havens for stolen money around the world. As this case demonstrates, my office will continue to hold such criminals accountable, no matter where they live.”

“In 2019 alone, the FBI recorded $1.7 billion in losses by companies and individuals victimized through business email compromise scams, the type of scheme Mr. Abbas is charged with conducting from abroad,” said Paul Delacourt, the Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office. “While this arrest has effectively taken a major alleged BEC player offline, BEC scams represent the most financially costly type of scheme reported to the FBI. I urge anyone who transfers funds personally or on behalf of a company to educate themselves about BEC so they can identify this insidious scheme before losing sizable amounts of money.”

“This was a challenging case, one that spanned international boundaries, traditional financial systems and the digital sphere,” said Jesse Baker, Special Agent in Charge of the United States Secret Service, Los Angles Field Office. “Technology has essentially erased geographic boundaries leaving trans-national criminal syndicates to believe that they are beyond the reach of law enforcement. The success in this case was the direct result of our trusted partnerships between the Department of Justice and our federal law enforcement colleagues. These partnerships helped dismantle a sophisticated organized crime group who preyed upon unsuspecting businesses. It is thanks to these partnerships that the American people can feel a bit more secure today.”

The affidavit alleges that Abbas and others committed a BEC scheme that defrauded a client of a New York-based law firm out of approximately $922,857 in October 2019. Abbas and co-conspirators allegedly tricked one of the law firm’s paralegals into wiring money intended for the client’s real estate refinancing to a bank account that was controlled by Abbas and the co-conspirators.

The affidavit also alleges that Abbas conspired to launder funds stolen in a $14.7 million cyber-heist from a foreign financial institution in February 2019, in which the stolen money was sent to bank accounts around the world. Abbas allegedly provided a co-conspirator with two bank accounts in Europe that Abbas anticipated each would receive €5 million (about $5.6 million) of the fraudulently obtained funds.

Abbas and others further conspired to launder hundreds of millions of dollars from other fraudulent schemes and computer intrusions, including one scheme to steal ÂŁ100 million (approximately $124 million) from an English Premier League soccer club, the complaint alleges.

A criminal complaint contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

If convicted of conspiracy to engage in money laundering, Abbas would face a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.

The FBI led the investigation of Abbas, and the United States Secret Service was also involved and provided substantial assistance. The FBI further thanks the government of the United Arab Emirates and the Dubai Police Department for their substantial assistance.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Anil J. Antony and Joseph B. Woodring of the Cyber and Intellectual Property Crimes Section. The Criminal Division’s Office of International Affairs provided substantial assistance in this matter.

Crime / Nigerians Abroad- How Has The Arrest Of Hushpuppi Affected Your Banking? by Neictraema(f): 9:06am On Jul 03, 2020
In the wake of Hushpuppi arrest:

1. In one of Dubai's banks (name not mentioned), you now need to prove that you earn at least 11,000 AED per month (up from 5,000 AED days ago) if you are a Nigeria before you can open an account.

2. Barclays - UK now warning that online money transfer (to Naija) could face some delays due to improved verification procedures.

I hope these are mere coincidences, however, I have seen these negative discriminatory "improved verification procedures" towards Nigerians (at the airports) when Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (the "Underwear Bomber" or "Christmas Bomber"wink nearly bombed an airliner on Christmas Day in 2009 in the US.

God bless Naija & #No2crime
