Predator: Badlands marks a notable shift for the franchise by centering a Yautja protagonist and placing him in a perilous, almost solitary odyssey on Genna, the Death Planet. The film leans into a survival-and-wattle arc reminiscent of Robinson Crusoe and Jeremiah Johnson, before blossoming into a high-stakes hunts-and-hybrid-tech confrontation that tests more than just physical prowess. Dek, the runt of his clan, is presented with the classic rite-of-path trial—overcoming doubt, physical limitations, and a treacherous environment to claim a title his people may never fully grant him. This setup provides a fresher, character-driven entry into a universe defined by predatory craft and ritual combat, while still delivering the franchise’s signature visceral moments.

Story and atmosphere

The opening act builds a lean, claustrophobic sense of danger as Dek navigates Genna’s lethal topology, flora, and fauna. This feels like a deliberate tonal departure from the more gadget-laden hunts of previous installments, allowing mood and environment to carry suspense.

Dek’s alliance with Thia, a Weyland-Yutani synthetic, introduces moral complexity and alliance dynamics that extend beyond simple predator-prey mechanics. The dynamic thread

I am a massive fan of the Predator franchise. Prey was an incredible return to form after a few pretty poor adaptations and Tratchenberg has followed this up again with another standout. Badlands is very different to Prey, we see a Predator as the MC and experience the film through him and a small supporting cast and what we get is very interesting, fun and at times humerous but still PREDATOR. The world-building on display in this film is gripping from start to finish and the creatures are wild and out of this world, providing some awesome moments. The action and 'Hunt' is very satisfying, especially watching a juvenile Predator earn his stripes through adapting and overcoming. The final action sequences are really quite epic, I had a smile on my face the whole time.

I recommend this film, give it a chance, go in ready to have fun and you will. The Yautja is still a badass, and continues to be so here - it is worth the price of admission and then some. Personally, i'd happily watch a direct sequel.
