Education / Parenting: It Takes A Great Parent To Raise A Great Kid by netozii(m): 11:02am On Apr 09, 2023
I kept asking this 13-year-old girl how she acquired deep knowledge of recycling and the greenhouse effect. She was so detailed, and yet, she is still in her J.S 1.

You see, there is no guarantee that you will raise a great child, but it's your duty to be an intentional parent. Your role is to set a track, but if the child derails - as they often do - they will always know that there's an expectation.

Usonwanne Ugwu was only 11 years when her parents discovered her interest in plastic waste. They took advantage of the burning zeal to lead the little girl into the world of plastics and their importance to the ecosystem.

Crime / The Killing Of A Pastor's Son And 3 Others - The Back Story by netozii(m): 6:28am On Apr 03, 2023
Last Saturday, 4 men were roasted alive at Limca Road, Nkpor. They were accused of terrorizing the neighborhood. They were caught, and beaten to a stupor. And when there was just a breath in them, the people hung a tyre around their necks and set them ablaze.

There was a huge, dark, young man among the accused who, at the point of death, vigorously sprang from the floor, freed himself from the tyres and dived into the gutter.

This guys name, I later learnt, was A-biigi. He was a Pastor's son and this story is for him.

Business / Cryptocurrency: Is CBN Right For Banning Crypto Transactions? by netozii(m): 9:56am On May 25, 2022
On February 5, 2021, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) released a circular addressed to banks and other financial institutions with the directive that transactions in cryptocurrencies and facilitating payment for cryptocurrency exchanges were prohibited.

This elicited a lot of negative reactions from Nigeria’s youths because it doesn’t make sense that a country battling insecurity and unemployment will shut down a market said to be worth as much as $400m.

According to Nairametrics, the lion’s share of peer-to-peer transactions in Africa still belongs to Nigeria. Nigeria currently has a P2P volume of $400 million on two major platforms.

CBN’s rationale for the Crypto ban:
CBN explained that cryptocurrencies transaction was devoid of proper regulation and prone to financial crimes largely due to their anonymity.

It was feared that kidnappers will demand that the ransoms of their kidnap victims are paid via Crypto. They also feared that Crypto will aid financial crimes like money laundering.

One year later…
One year later kidnapping is even more lucrative than it was before the ban but I am yet to hear of a kidnapper that sent a wallet address instead of the old but effective “drop the money at… and make sure you don’t involve the police.”

A directive even the state governments and FG have reportedly obeyed. Meanwhile, Deji Adenyanju is still petitioning the EFCC to investigate Tinubu’s bullion van scandal but let’s turn a blind eye to the real issues and blame vices like kidnap and money laundering on the anonymity of Cryptocurrencies.

The price
What the CBN has achieved with its continued ban on Cryptocurrency is that a $400m market has been pushed to the black market making it easier for young Nigerians who are trying to get by to become sitting ducks to exploiters, big platforms like Binance and Coinbase are not excluded as there are reports of young Nigerians whose accounts have been frozen without any violations.

While every other financial institution is looking for ways to take advantage of a 2 trillion dollar Cryptocurrency market and countries like El Salvador putting themselves in a pole position to benefit from Cryptocurrency, Emefiele led CBN chose to ignore, and even worse, place a ban on a TWO TRILLION DOLLAR MARKET!

I guess we can’t expect any better from a man that recently filed a lawsuit seeking to run for president without resigning as CBN governor.

Science/Technology / Technology: Ability Is The New Certificate by netozii(m): 10:30am On May 24, 2022
While I was in a meeting with Uche on Saturday, she received a message from a mother whose son got admission to Stanford University, USA. This boy – still in his SS 3, and he’s yet to sit for his WAEC (this may) – attended a 6-week program on coding in Onitsha.

According to his mother, the boy, after learning how to code under Uche, continued developing himself and became indispensable to his school.

What caught my attention was the school that offered him admission – Stanford University.

Stanford University produced Larry Page (Google) and Chelsea (the only child of President Bill and Hillary Clinton).

Such a school did not ask the boy for his O-level mathematics result or his grade in the English Language. They didn’t ask for 5 credits. They offered him admission based on his coding ability.

Ironically, here in Nigeria, with A1 in Mathematics, Physics, Further Maths, and Technical Drawing, Universities will still reject you because you got a Pass in English.

Our biggest challenge may not be Boko Haram but the quality of people that will represent us in the future. People that are victims of the obsolete and epileptic educational system of this country. Victims of the system that are not comparing notes with the rest of the world.

Secondary schools in Onitsha just recently stopped the teaching of Shorthand and still have a curriculum where students learn the keyboard by drawing it on a plain sheet. Secondary Schools in this city still offer Business Studies with examination questions of ‘Who is a receptionist?’

I saw a JS 2 examination paper where they asked the students to draw and label a CPU, a monitor, and a mouse. If it were a Fine Art examination, it would not be a problem, but it was a Computer Study examination.

Last week, I met Qudus Onikeku, an international African dancer. He shared his story of how he failed JAMB 4 times and later got admission to a school in France to learn ‘dancing’. Dancing!

They admitted him based on his displayed skills. Today, he’s touring over 15 cities on 3 continents with his dance documentary. In his words, he said that what we refer to as ‘Extra curriculum’ is what the world focuses on.

But here in Nigeria, Emmanuella must pass English and Maths before a poorly funded institution will admit her into Theater Arts. WizKid must credit Economics to learn Music. The world has changed, but as Nigeria was in the beginning, we are still now.

Two people cannot be mad at the same time. As the nation still enjoys the past, we should think beyond what the system can offer us. As you send your kids to Nigerian Schools, be observant to know what he is good and interested in.

The world has left theories. Ability is now the new certificate.

Business / What I Wish Everyone Knew About The Antics Of Some Traders In Iweka Road by netozii(m): 3:09pm On May 13, 2022
The only difference between Yahoo boys and rogue traders in Iweka Road is creativity. While the Yahoo boys update their formats, the rogue traders follow the rule that says: never change a winning formula.

I went to buy a ceiling fan for the library. I knew the make, the place to get it and the price. The cost added N500 to what I budgeted for it.

‘Write me a receipt. I don’t have cash. I will transfer the money.’

‘You will need to test it,’ he said.

I wouldn’t mind but because he said that, I said ok.

‘I don’t have electricity. Please, take it to my neighbor’s shop. He will test it for you.’

I took the fan to the next shop.

Seeing the fan, the neighbor peeped outside as if to know if the seller was within earshot. Confirming that the seller wasn’t near, he mutter: ‘Is this your choice?’

‘Why do you ask?’

‘You would have asked him to give you copper coil. This won’t last more than a month.’

These guys can’t think of something new. 14 years ago, I nearly fell for this sham.

There are good traders in Iweka Road Market, Onitsha. Not every trader is out to take advantage of the buyers.

The Year 2008
In 2008, I went to the same Iweka Road to buy a pressing iron. Philips was the ultimate equipment of the time. I have gone to 2 shops and both insisted that they won’t take a kobo less than 6k. When I met the 3rd guy, he agreed to sell it for 5k. I paid without wasting a second.

‘Follow me,’ he said, ‘let’s go to where we will test it.’

As we walked a few steps into the market, he told me to wait for him. He forgot to lock his safe. He sprinted to his office as I stood in the middle of the market.

From nowhere, one guy appeared. He had a friendly smile on his face and wore a Sunflower shirt. I smiled back.

‘Have you paid for this iron?’

‘Yes.’

‘Philips. A nice iron. It means you want to iron only shirts.’

‘I don’t understand.’

‘This is not the original Philips. This can’t iron your trousers. Original Philips is scarce in the market. If you see it, it won’t be less than 8k. You will use it forever.’

I wanted to ask more questions, but the guy darted into the crowd. Turning around, I saw the seller.

‘Follow me,’ he said.

I wasn’t going anywhere. ‘Is this the original Philips?’

Still walking ahead, he said: ‘This will serve you. It irons shirts very well. It is what everyone buys these days.’

‘I don’t understand you. What do you mean by ‘it irons shirts very well’?’

‘Shirts. It irons any type of shirt and traditional wears. But can’t iron trousers.’

See me, see wahala. ‘why will I buy an iron for shirts alone?’

‘You didn’t tell me you need something for shirts and trousers.’

‘This is not fair.’

‘Oga, nothing has gone wrong yet. We are still in the market. If you want a superior iron, you just have to add little money.’

‘I want Philips. Original Philips.’

‘Original Philips is 10k.’

‘I will give you 7k.’

‘No. 9k.’

Because I have already given him 5,000, I found myself in a fix.

‘I don’t have 9k. I will pay 7,500.’

‘Oga, we are not pricing pepper. If you don’t have the money, you can go with this one. It will serve you. But if you want original Philips, the best I can do for you is to remove 500 from 9k.’

Out of frustration, I shifted my gaze to the side and caught a figure laughing his eyes out. He dodged immediately but wasn’t fast enough. His yellow shirt betrayed him. He was the good Samaritan that revealed the secret to me.

Ha! I was his joke. Onitsha found a worthy clown in the center of the market, and the maga was about to pay.

Acting as if I saw nothing, I said to the seller: ‘I don’t have that amount.’

‘So, what will you do now?’

‘I will go with this one.’

‘You won’t return it later o.’

‘I know.’

Without testing it, I started moving away from him.

‘Oga, come.’ The seller trailed me. ‘It is because of you. Bring 8k let me give you the original Philips.’

‘Don’t worry. I will go with this.’

‘Bring 7,500.’

‘I won’t.’

‘How much will you add?’

‘I want to go with this.’

As I said that, someone clamped my hand.

‘Why are you holding me?’

‘Give me my iron and take your money.’

‘What?’

‘Philips is six thousand naira.’

(I am still using that pressing iron till today.)

Politics / An Open Letter To Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo by netozii(m): 10:33am On Jan 03, 2022
To The Governor-Elect Of Anambra State

Dear Professor Soludo,

I will like to start by congratulating you on your victory in the last gubernatorial election. Your emergence is the advent of the hope the good people of Anambra State yell for. We believe that you have all it takes to bring the needed change, and we trooped out against all odds and voted for you. This faith, Dear Professor Soludo, comes with its weight.

The people of Anambra State, your people, are not in doubt of your capacity, but we still bear the scars of our past: we have seen politics happen to our bests; we have watched as our leaders dine with the elements we elected them to purge - and we are always at the receiving end.

As a local that had his cradle in Anambra State - and probably will live here all my life, I write not from an angle of interest, but as one that enjoys or endures - respectively - every good or bad decision of the government. Among the uncountable challenges in the state, there are 3 major issues I will like to present in this impromptu epistle.

* First is the decades of grassroots-political rape in Anambra State.
* Second - and from an emotional perspective - is the payment of entitlement to both civil servants and retirees.
* The third is the damaged image of our dear Anambra State.

Dear Professor Soludo, on the top of my list - and it is there for obvious reasons - is a need for democracy to find its way into the roots of Anambra State. The last time Anambra people enjoyed the basic democracy was in 1999: when the likes of Late Chucks Anah (Former Chairman of Onitsha North) were elected. After their tenure, Gov Chinwoke Mbadinuju could not conduct another local election before handing over to Governor Chris Nwabueze Ngige.

The 3 turbulent years of Governor Chris Nwabueze Ngige produced no local government Chairman nor ward councilor. We believed that the infamous political war of his time was the cause and expected his successor to unshackle our feet, but it did not happen. Despite all his excellent deeds, Governor Peter Obi made Governor Ngige his role-model, and, throughout Governor Obi's 8 years in office, muted the grassroots. He only found it necessary to conduct the local elections on his departure from the Government house. This, we learnt, did not sit well with the then-incoming Governor: Governor Willie Obiano. And apart from that inherited council, Governor Obiano preferred to work with appointed caretaker committees and shunned all appeals to democratize the grassroots.

I have once, in 1999, witnessed the euphoria of local elections. I knew what it was like to have a regular neighbor as a part of the central government. Of all the elective positions in the country, none is as close to the people as the councilors. And I want to appeal to you, Dear Professor Soludo, that as we chose you to be our Governor, there are common people among us we believe would best represent us in the grassroots.

Again, when it comes to the welfare of the civil servants, the last time our dear Anambra State had a critical issue with the payment of salaries and pensions was under Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju. His inability to manage the situation - I am inclined to believe - added to the surge in the local crime rate of early 2000. And while we lauded the introduction of Bakassi Boys by the then Governor, none of us profiled the relationship between the non-payment of salary and the insecurity in the system. I will like you to know that one of the victims of the Bakassi Boys in Onitsha was a secondary school student. His body was dismembered by the group, and his head and feet were kept around DMGS roundabout, Onitsha. Till now, I wonder whether that boy would have still been alive if the government did not activate the long dormancy in the public schools.

After Governor Mbadinuju, his successors made the payment of civil servants' entitlements (both active and retired) a cardinal duty. However, the politicization of payment of salary by the Governors - who converted this civic duty into an achievement anthem - sends a conflicting wave to the people of Anambra State. It signals that what happened in the past might repeat itself. I trust it cannot be under your watch, but who knows who would come after you? Dear Professor Soludo, if it will be possible to institutionalize the payment of salaries, pensions, and gratuities, please, don't think twice before doing that.

Finally, echoing a revised version of the great Chinua Achebe's words, I'd say: that the trouble with Anambra State is simply and squarely a failure of leadership. The soiled image of Anambra State is artificial.

As someone that has been around for so long, I have seen a governor that installed sanity in Anambra State in his first year. We witnessed a complete reformation of Upper Iweka. In that first year, people moved in and out of Anambra parks and roads, unmolested. We were told that the Governor had a CCTV camera mounted on the Flyover of Upper Iweka, and we believed it. However, after a while, the bliss sublimed, and things fell apart as the governor stayed longer.

Dear Professor Soludo, the negative reviews people always share about our dear state are not far from the realities on the ground. Broad-day extortion, public harassment, loose security, are vices we deal with every day. And if I didn't witness the ideal Anambra of the Governor's first year, I would have concluded that there is no remedy to this menace.

To be frank, governing Anambra will not be as easy - to you - as working out in the gym. You will be dragged into the inter-denominational wars of the local churches; there will be men-gods in different local governments that would demand human sacrifices; the opposition would also be on the watch out to make a million meanings out of every word of yours. But I also trust that you, Dear Professor Soludo, can manage all these.

Like our people always say: Onye ana ekwu nwelu ife o na eme (heroes have their reputations). We expect you to straighten all the crooked paths in Anambra State. We dream of the Dubai you would turn Idemili into, the wonders you will perform in Okpoko, the resuscitation of the greater Onitsha Water Scheme, the introduction of the intra-state railway, the intentional planting of trees, the revival of Art and Culture in Anambra State, and we cannot wait to see the new Fegge.

We read your amazing manifesto and will score you based on that. We have our hopes so high because we chose the best of us.

In all, Dear Professor Soludo - Charly Nwa Mgbafor, jide ofo. Stand on the side of fairness. E megbuna Okeke, e megbuna Okafor (do not maltreat any party). Remember the competitive spirit of 'The Light of the Nation.' And as you bear the torch, may all the good forces of the state protect you.

Chi gi dube gi.

Business / Don Ebubeogu Takes A Bold Step To Digitalize Commerce In Anambra State by netozii(m): 2:16pm On Nov 15, 2020
On October 29, 2020, I was a panelist in South East Regional Program organized by UKaid, on Promoting South East trade in the New Business Normal, with the theme - Improving Market Access Through Digital Trade.

The participants acknowledged the growing volume of trading activities through Modern Trade and eCommerce channels; a challenge to the conventional open markets. It was generally agreed that business dynamics are gradually changing, and that while comfort will drive volumes for Modern trade, technology will not only fuel eCommerce, but offers both comfort and cost-saving.

Electronic Commerce commonly known as eCommerce is the evolving lifestyle of buying and selling of products or services over the electronic system such as internet.

One of the technologies that really brought information revolution in this century is the Internet Technology and is rightly regarded as the third wave of revolution after agricultural and industrial revolutions.

There is no doubt that South East is at the forefront of commerce in Nigeria, but it is painful to note that South East has not embraced technology to further their business interest.

Coincidentally, in the evening of October 29th, after the South East Regional meeting, I came across a post made on Facebook by Ozii Baba Anieto on fresh graduates that earn N15,000 monthly in Anambra State as an office staff, against another that earns N55,000 at Abuja as a digital marketer. I don’t need a soothsayer to tell me that we either embrace technology or be doomed.

After responding to the Facebook post, Ozii Baba Anieto reached out to me and made a scheduled visit with Ifedy Inspire and Oge-Chukwu Ka Mma which afforded us the opportunity to brainstorm on how to use our various experiences to place this town on the map of technology through training and mentorship, in order to build a pool of skilled workforce with IT in mind, and more importantly rekindle and reminiscence our Anambra Dreams.

Yesterday, I called several business operators and societal influencers to find out what their dreams are for this state. Alas, we all dream alike.

In the coming weeks, Ozii Baba and his team will be developing templates to help us set up a Startup Hub that will serve as an incubator for IT startups, skill acquisition and entrepreneurship, connecting and exposing the Nigerian youths to numerous Investors, Accelerators, Mentors and Industry leaders.

The Startup Hub will also focus on topics such as forecasting, business fundamentals, alternate business funding, legal structures, and prototyping.

If you believe in the greater Anambra State, and Nigeria in general, you have to be part of this movement by contributing your time and ideas to the mentorship program, selflessly.

Corollary, in this context, mentoring will be applied for strategic purposes such as talent strategy, leadership development, startup planning, and organisational goals, leading to greater job opportunities, career satisfaction and the increased likelihood of business success for startups.

Can you spare some time to be part of this movement?

What is your Dream?

Obiano Has Failed as a Governor. He is blaming invisible. He should also tell us if the opposition replaced Julius Berger with bricklayers. Anambra, today, uses masons to repair highways
