Story begins...

“Forget it man, sugar mummy no de pay well o. they are very possessive and them no go give you any connection. The best they can do is hand some cash and once they are bored they will dump your ass” Charles said loudly I watched my two best friends argue and I realized how bad being unemployed can be. The boys had thought of different ways to make money and they argued about what could wheel in enough cash to sustain them. My name is Mark and I am a graduate of physiology with good grades, I finished my youth service two years ago and till now I haven’t found a job.

I live in an apartment with my best friends Seth and Charles. We met during our university days and have been friends since then, Charles teaches at a secondary school and he foots most of the bills. While Seth and I looked for small jobs that brought in a little cash

“If I see sugar mummy wey go pay me 50k weekly I no mind, I go service am wella” Seth said and I answered

“Guy, don’t let Dorcas hear you saying this” he scoffed at me and headed into the kitchen to check the concoction rice he was cooking

“What about that your girlfriend?” Seth asked staring at me

“Who?” I asked

“Lillian, who else are you toasting?”

“Oh, she’s fine. I am taking her to the movies this weekend”

“No offence to you, but I don’t like that girl.”

“You don’t like her, why?”

“She no fine” Charles yelled from the kitchen

“Aside that she’s not too pretty, she has a horrible character. She’s rude, and once again I am sorry to say, she no just make sense”

“What’s the point of apologizing when you would just say something cruel” I asked

“I am trying to water it down so that you won’t feel too hurt”

“Whatever, I like her I think she’s cool”

I did like Lillian she seemed like a nice person even though she liked to put up an attitude like she didn’t care but I knew that deep down inside her she was a nice person and she just needed some time to show her tender side. When Charles finished cooking we sat down to eat and told more stories about girls that had come into our lives.

Seth was the Casanova, he had a reputation for having several women in his life, he didn’t like to commit, even though he claimed he was being sharp I knew that he didn’t want to commit to a single woman because he didn’t want to get hurt. Charles on the other hand has been with one woman since I met him. He was a very principled young man and I admired that about him. He didn’t drink alcohol and took his faith seriously and above all he was unbelievably generous and would share anything he had without a second thought. I was the neutral guy, I didn’t like women too much, I had only three girlfriends while in the university and they had all broken up with me. I didn’t put my heart too deeply in relationships; I have a philosophy if its real it will last. So when my past relationships ended, I knew they weren’t real that’s why they didn’t last.

“To have a girlfriend in this country right now is like funding a building project” Seth said and he was right, girls like to be pampered and spoiled with gifts and for an unemployed man like me it would take an understanding woman who wasn’t solely interested in material things to date a man like me. I just hoped Lillian would fit into that category.

On Saturday, I picked up my favorite shirt and sprayed my cologne of course my friends made jest of me for taking Lillian out to the movies. I called her and asked if I could come meet her at her place but she asked me to go to the cinema and she would meet me there. A few minutes later I was at the cinemas I joined the queue to get tickets for the movie and I noticed a young woman probably in her mid thirties or early forties walk in with two young women. I could tell that she was a prominent woman considering the security personnel that followed her around.

I called Lillian again to find out if she was already at the cinema but she told me that she wouldn’t be able to make it and that she had something to do. I was irritated, Seth was right, Lillian had an attitude problem. On the brighter side I was glad I hadn’t paid for the tickets. When it got to my turn I brought out my wallet to pay for one ticket but the cashier told me that the lady had paid for my ticket. I turned to look at her, she was beautiful, for a white woman she had full breasts and a nice curvaceous body, her lips were full and luscious and she wore a fitted dress that exposed her breasts and her beautiful curves, she winked at me I found it a little weird but I knew it would impolite not to thank her for paying for the tickets so I started to walk towards her but she met me half way before I could get to her

“Thank you very much ma’am for paying for the tickets” I said as politely as I knew how and she smiled

“It’s a pleasure dear. I want to join you watch the movie, I hope you don’t mind” she said still smiling and I began to feel uneasy

“Sure.” I said even though I wasn’t sure why she wanted to see the movie with me. I led the way into the movie theatre still a feeling a little uneasy

Not long after we settled in the movie started. It was dark already so I could hardly see her face, she moved closer to me as if to hold me and then I caught her perfume, she smelt gorgeous the movie generated into a scary scene and she quickly held on to me. I was a little startled and then she slid her hand down my groin I tried to move

Nigeria was hit with its worst recession in its history just two years back. ...Barbara paced up on down impatiently, she had been so sure that her client would show up and till now there was no sign of the lady who she was going to be representing in court. She resisted the urge to grab a cigarette from her purse.

“What kind of stupid case did I take on?” she murmured in frustration she glanced at her wrist watch, in less than three minutes the court was going to be in session. She rubbed her temples and tried to calm down, but her head was too clogged with ideas on how she would handle the case if her client didn’t show up.

She turned around and began to head into the court room when the woman she’s been waiting for rushed after her

“I’m sorry I’m late” she whispered and Barbara glared at her

“Don’t Bleep this up” she said and they both sat down to begin their legal battle

Barbara Usman is a 28 year old high profile lawyer. She had an untarnished reputation of winning high profile cases, especially those that involved women and lots of money. She was beautiful and undeniably intelligent; she had fair skin and long brown curly hair. She had a hard and persistent will power and it took her to places. She however had the horrible addiction of smoking and drinking, with no social life and all her family out of the country Barbara spent all her time working, smoking, drinking or partying.

Her lifestyle and habits couldn’t help her sustain a stable relationship so she stopped trying to be romantically involved with anyone. That morning her client was suing Desmond Chiodo a wealthy businessman for sexual harassment and abuse her client wanted 50 million naira in damages. The presiding judge arrived and they all rose to their feet. She announced her case and called her client up for cross examination, and then her client told the court that she visited the accused for a business meeting where he harassed her sexually and threatened her.

After the cross examination the defendant was called to the stand and for the first time she saw a man that made her heart beat twice. He had beautiful piercing eyes, pink lips that he tended to lick too often and she would have sworn that he was smiling at her and that made her really uncomfortable. They spent about an hour and a half arguing then the judge adjourned the case to about 90 days from that day. Like most cases she’d expected for this one to drag for a long period of time but she was glad that they had established the first process.

She packed her files into the briefcase and hung her robe over her arm then she walked to her black Mercedes Benz. She pressed the unlock button on her car remote control and was about to step into the car when someone tapped her. She turned around quite startled

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you” it was Desmond

“What can I do for you?” she asked curtly and he smiled in sexy creepy kind of way

“Have we met before? You strike me as someone I’ve known somewhere”

“Well, I am a popular face and it will be no surprise that you think you know me” she said and he laughed

“Quite feisty eh? Okay I don’t like being dragged into to any kind of scandal and I know your client is only after my money so can we settle out of court?”

She frowned and shook her head

“Why the sudden need to bail?” she asked

And he studied her for about a minute, the smell of her perfume lingered on his nostrils; it was magnolia one of his favorite fragrances he smiled then he said

“I don’t want any scandals”

She rolled her eyes and said

“Have your lawyer call me. We’ll work out a plan” then she stepped into her car turned on the ignition and drove off.

Desmond Emeka Chiodo is the only son of Chief Nnamdi Chiodo, former Senate President and a very wealthy businessman. Desmond was calm, handsome and hardworking but he was single and that made a lot of woman chase after him. They bombarded his phones with calls and whenever he went out on either a business meeting or a social gathering, he would have at least two or three women deliberately flirting with him, some would deliberately flash their boobs at him or hold on too tight whenever he gave them a hug. At a point in his life time he enjoyed the attention and had several flings with few of them but he had grown tired of all that drama that came with being with so many women.

So he cut down on the women and tried as much as possible to stay with one woman. He settled for Amanda she was beautiful and a successful business woman, she had a lot of connections, she was quite articulate and intelligent but Desmond and Amanda couldn’t see eye to eye on a lot of issues and they would argue for days. Amanda was super insecure, she would fight him over the most trivial things, and she was suspicious of every woman and wanted to make every decision even those that concerned his business.

Desmond was calm and not really a talkative but he wasn’t a weakling and in as much as he respected women he didn’t like to be cornered or emotionally blackmailed into doing things he didn’t want. So after a few months of dating, he decided to call it quits. And just as he had expected she ranted, accusing him of cheating, she ran to the press and made loads of accusations but he paid no mind to her. After Amanda, he met a South African model on one of his trips to the US.

She was tall and beautiful and they hit it off almost immediately, they dated for a few weeks and then he found out she was a call girl and had a reputation for defrauding a lot of men. And then he ended the relationship. With that he gave up on women for a while, it was a better alternative to all the drama women brought.

He looked at the $1500 watch on his wrist and rubbed his temples, then picked up the intercom and dialed his secretary she picked up immediately

“Ask Samson to see me immediately” he said and dropped the device in its cradle

Samson was his personal assistant, they were pretty close despite that fact that Samson worked for him

“Boss, you sent for me.” Sam said as soon as he walked in

“Yea, I wanted to know if I have any event this weekend”

“Yes you do, Senator Danjuma’s book launch tonight, and Ireti’s wedding tomorrow”

“Which one can I miss?” he asked and Sam chuckled

“I don’t think you can miss either, but if you can send Ireti a gift then make an appearance at the book launch.”

“Ok book launch it is then” Desmond said and dismissed Samson.

Barbara stared at herself in the mirror. She packed her long curly hair into a bun and applied some mascara, she didn’t want to go out tonight but she was bored and she knew that an event like this one would give her the opportunity to meet high end clients, plus there would be great wine and food. She picked up her purse and adjusted her dress then walked out of her home; she carefully locked the front door and asked the security man to open the gate for her.

When she got to the venue of the book launch, she handed the security her pass and walked into the hall filled with the VIP’s of the country, she smiled at those who cared to smile at her and ignored those who didn’t. She found her seat and settled in then grabbed a glass of champagne from the usher that walked passed her, she took a gulp and placed the glass on the table and then scanned the room for any familiar face so that she could make small talk with and meet a few powerful people and get some contracts or better still increase her clientele. As she turned towards her left she recognized a colleague of hers, they had met once or twice in court and she got up to meet him

“Hello” she said with a smile, she had forgotten his name probably because he wasn’t too important

“Hi Barbara, you look absolutely stunning” he said with a green and Barbara looked away in irritation

“Thank you” she replied and almost instantly her eyes caught a man removing a phone from someone’s jacket

“Excuse me” she said and hastily walked after the pick pocket and grabbed him by the arm

“Hand that phone you just stole, you son of a bitch” she muttered and the young man saw the stern look on her face and realized that she was dead serious

“What are you talking about?” he asked trying to sound innocent but the tremble in his voice gave him away

“Oh you want to deny it? Great I will have security here in an instant” she said and gestured towards one of the security men that stood at one of the entrances. And the man quickly gave her the phone and hurried out of the building. She turned around to find the owner of the phone and he was still standing at the spot where the phone was taken from his pocket. She tapped him by the shoulder and when he turned around it was Desmond

“Hello” he said with a grin.

“Hi, uhmm someone tried to steal your phone, its right here”. She said and handed him the phone. He smiled gratefully at her

“Thank you so much” he said and she nodded and turned around to leave but he stopped her and said

“Walk with me, let us go to a more private place so we can talk”

“Why?” she asked with a raised brow and he chuckled.

“Just chit chat, get to know each other.” And with that he locked his arm with hers and led her out of the overcrowded hall.

They walked out of the hall and as soon as they stepped out Barbara reached into her purse and brought out a cigarette and lifted it to her lips. He watched her as she lit it and then he shook head

“You know tobacco is dangerous to your health right?”She scoffed and said

“You know it’s none of your business right?” he smiled

“So how long have you been practicing law?”

“A few years”

“Hmmm, so you’re here alone? No date?”

“Is this your way of asking if I am single?”

He laughed and said

“Well, yea if you put it that way. So are you single”

“Yes, I am single and I want to remain that way”

“Oh… okay.”

There was brief silence and Desmond watched her as she smoked. God she was beautiful, her hair hung beautifully on her shoulders and her face was perfect. Barbara tried to ignore the fire that burnt from Des’s eyes, she watched him from the corner of her eyes, he was handsome; there was something about him that made her knees weak. She’d been lonely for so long that she longed to be in the arms of a man. She hadn’t known him for too long but she felt drawn to him.

“I’ve had a long day out. I’d like to leave now” She said as she dropped the finished cigarette on the grown and stepped on it

“Okay then, let me walk you to your car” he said

When they got to her car she held out her hand to him and said

“It was a pleasure to see you again Mr Desmond”

“The pleasure is all mine.” He said and lifted her hands to lips

She felt a weird sensation throughout her body and she shivered a little.

My husband and I have been married for three years. We met four years ago at a conference in Ibadan; we sat next to each other and we hit it off almost immediately. He was really handsome in the white shirt and navy blue trousers which he wore that day. After the conference we kept in touch and we became really close, whenever he visited Ilorin he’d make sure we see and in one of those meetings he asked me to be his girlfriend.

I was in a relationship but it wasn’t going pretty well and I was already so attracted to him so I accepted. The first few months were not so interesting because we were almost three hundred kilometers apart, he called as often as possible and we both tried to visit each other as often as time would permit.

My name is Titilayo and I got engaged to my heart rob Biodun after dating him for six months. We had our wedding ceremony two months after the engagement. It was an average wedding and after the wedding I moved to Lagos to live with him. I got a job almost immediately; I won’t describe my marriage to Biodun as one with lots of romance. We had sex whenever either one of us felt the urge; it wasn’t usually anything special.

Most times we had sex at night and it never had any adventure, it was just regular sex but I was satisfied. I had never contemplated cheating on my husband and I was fairly positive that Biodun wasn’t cheating on me either. We had a pretty regular lifestyle, we hardly ever went on dates maybe because our busy schedules wouldn’t let us or it was because we weren’t just the outgoing type. One evening while we ate dinner, Biodun looked up at me and said

“Honey, why don’t we go out? I mean on dates.”

“I don’t know. Why are you asking?”

“My colleague teased me today. He said that I’m not a fun person; he seemed so sure that I hadn’t done anything fun for years. And he’s right”

I shook my head and smiled

“Our work won’t even let us have those kinds of pleasures”

“I think we have to go somewhere this weekend. There’s a club in Lekki, it seems like a nice place where couples can have a good time” he replied and I immediately knew that this was coming from a deep place. Biodun was one to take up a challenge he didn’t like being intimidated by anything or anyone so we were definitely going on this date. I suddenly felt excited I couldn’t wait for the day.

Friday came even earlier than I had anticipated. I was still in the office when my husband called me

“Baby I hope you haven’t forgotten that we have a date today”

“Wow, you are serious about this.”

“Of course I am. You’ll be home early tonight right?” he asked and I could tell that he was excited

“Yes. I will try to be home as early as possible” and with that we said our goodbyes and I hung up the phone

At about 8:00pm after we’ve had our supper; I changed into something more casual and applied some makeup, he also dressed in a casual jean and t-shirt. We headed out and Biodun started to tell me about his university days and how he would party with his friend’s non-stop.

He wasn’t much of a drinker but he was an amazing dancer. In fact he stole the show at our wedding party, he warned me before hand that tonight he was going to beat me once more on the dance floor and I told him I was prepared. We were still laughing at some funny joke Biodun had told me when he turned into the gate of the club.

The place was packed with cars and it seemed like a high end club. He found a place to park and we stepped out of the car when we got to the door, the security man asked for our passes and Biodun asked how much it cost but the hefty looking bouncer told him the club was strictly meant for registered members except if we got an invite from another member and if we did, the member had to be with us. We turned our backs and were headed to our car when someone called us back

“Hey, you’re a couple right?” the young lively man asked and Biodun answered

“Yea, I just wanted to take my wife on a date.”

“Oh… you can come on in. this club is exclusive to married people and it’s not the regular kind of club; I’ll invite you in and if you don’t like our kind of partying feel free not to come again”

“Patrick please stop pulling my legs, Rita just left my house and for goodness sake we didn’t even argue let alone break up. So how could she be getting married?”

“Hillary you are my friend and I can’t lie to you, I would never do anything deliberately to ruin your relationship. I am so sure Rita is getting married I even saw her picture on the invitation card. I think I kept the card somewhere.”

Patrick said and started searching for the invitation Olivia had brought over to his house some days ago

Hillary cupped his face in his hands.

Maybe it was just a case of mistaken identity.

Rita couldn’t be getting married to anyone except him. He promised to marry her as soon as his finances were stable and she swore to wait for him.

How then would she be getting married and worse without even letting him know? That would be too unfair. He dismissed the thought; it can’t be true.

Almost immediately Patrick appeared with a brown paper that looked a little fancy.

“Here, this is Rita’s wedding invitation” Patrick said and handed it to Hillary who reluctantly collected the card.

He opened it carefully and there was a small picture of Rita leaning on a man in the corner of the card.

He studied the picture the man wasn’t young or handsome, maybe it was money that pushed her into this.

But how could Rita pretend like this? Was she planning not to ever tell him? His heart began to pound.

How could he not have noticed any of this? He suddenly had a headache.

He opened his mouth to say something but he couldn’t find the words. After a long silence he said

“Women are indeed insatiable. What didn’t I do for Rita?

Guy, do you know there are times when I will go hungry so that I can give her whatever she asks for. God damn I am such a fool.”

“Please I need you to calm down” Patrick said hating to be the bearer of such bad news

“She told me she loves me, and she will wait for me no matter how long”

“Calm down. Maybe it wasn’t entirely her fault and she’s under some kind of pressure to get married”

“She should’ve at least told me something, at least a clue so I would know I am not the only one. How has she been pretending all this while for God’s sake?”

“I’m so sorry man. I really am” Patrick said patting his friend in the back and Hillary sighed.

Hillary walked back home alone.

Patrick had offered to walk him back but he declined, he wanted to be alone.

He’d never felt this kind of pain except for when he lost his father.

He wanted to call Rita but he didn’t know if he was ready to hear her voice now and he didn’t even know what words to say to her.

When he got to his house he collapsed on the bed and tried to focus on something else but he couldn’t think of anything else. He imagined how many times that man had kissed her and touched her and made love to her. His heart ached even more, she was his queen he even had fantasies of them together with their kids.

All of that was now thrown to the wind. He tried to sleep but couldn’t, he was wide eyed until dawn. Once it was 6:00am he sluggishly rose up from the bed and prepared for work.

He had a quick shower he tried to take a cup of tea but it tasted weird in his mouth, he dropped the cup on the table grabbed his coat and headed out.

He arrived at work exactly fifteen minutes before 8:00am and settled down to work.

He worked as an assistant to the accountant in a large consulting firm. He wasn’t really happy with working as an assistant but that was the only job he’d gotten after applying for six months and the pay was fair enough.

His head was pounding evidently from the lack of sleep last night. He turned on his laptop and tried to organize his boss’ activities for the week. He told himself it was time to stop Thinking about Rita.

“Good morning Hills” one of his colleagues greeted

“Morning” he replied casually and continued to stare at his computer.

“Staff general meeting is in two minutes, the executive director wants to meet with all of us” his colleague announced and Hillary nodded, his head was still aching he glanced at his watch on his wrist and gently shut his laptop.

He buttoned his coat and headed for the board room where all the staff of the organization began to trickle in. They all came in different small groups everyone seemed to be talking to someone. Patrick soon stood beside him

“Hey man, what’s up? Feeling better today right?”

“Yea” he didn’t want to talk. He wasn’t one to talk about his personal life with people.

Patrick was about to say something else when the director cleared her throat and Hillary was glad the meeting was about to begin.

The Director made along speech about how they all had to put in more effort and be diligent. Most of what she said made no sense to him and he wasn’t paying any attention then suddenly his phone rang.

Everyone turned and looked at him he looked down at the phone, it was Rita. He silenced the device and turned off the phone.

Then put his head down to avoid the eyes of his colleagues most especially the piercing eyes of the executive director. He’d only seen her from afar.

She was wealthy and beautiful and somehow he couldn’t resist the urge to look at her. For about ten seconds her eyes locked with his and then he looked down again. When the meeting drew to a close, the director asked to see him and he knew his day had just gotten worse...

Everything seems to be perfect in the super eagles camp or so I thought. With the first victory over the Cameroonian squad in uyo, the soaring eagles arrived in yaonde ahead of their clash with the indomitable lions. ...Barbara paced up on down impatiently, she had been so sure that her client would show up and till now there was no sign of the lady who she was going to be representing in court. She resisted the urge to grab a cigarette from her purse.

“What kind of stupid case did I take on?” she murmured in frustration she glanced at her wrist watch, in less than three minutes the court was going to be in session. She rubbed her temples and tried to calm down, but her head was too clogged with ideas on how she would handle the case if her client didn’t show up.

She turned around and began to head into the court room when the woman she’s been waiting for rushed after her

“I’m sorry I’m late” she whispered and Barbara glared at her

“Don’t Bleep this up” she said and they both sat down to begin their legal battle

Barbara Usman is a 28 year old high profile lawyer. She had an untarnished reputation of winning high profile cases, especially those that involved women and lots of money. She was beautiful and undeniably intelligent; she had fair skin and long brown curly hair. She had a hard and persistent will power and it took her to places. She however had the horrible addiction of smoking and drinking, with no social life and all her family out of the country Barbara spent all her time working, smoking, drinking or partying.

Her lifestyle and habits couldn’t help her sustain a stable relationship so she stopped trying to be romantically involved with anyone. That morning her client was suing Desmond Chiodo a wealthy businessman for sexual harassment and abuse her client wanted 50 million naira in damages. The presiding judge arrived and they all rose to their feet. She announced her case and called her client up for cross examination, and then her client told the court that she visited the accused for a business meeting where he harassed her sexually and threatened her.

After the cross examination the defendant was called to the stand and for the first time she saw a man that made her heart beat twice. He had beautiful piercing eyes, pink lips that he tended to lick too often and she would have sworn that he was smiling at her and that made her really uncomfortable. They spent about an hour and a half arguing then the judge adjourned the case to about 90 days from that day. Like most cases she’d expected for this one to drag for a long period of time but she was glad that they had established the first process.

She packed her files into the briefcase and hung her robe over her arm then she walked to her black Mercedes Benz. She pressed the unlock button on her car remote control and was about to step into the car when someone tapped her. She turned around quite startled

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you” it was Desmond

“What can I do for you?” she asked curtly and he smiled in sexy creepy kind of way

“Have we met before? You strike me as someone I’ve known somewhere”

“Well, I am a popular face and it will be no surprise that you think you know me” she said and he laughed

“Quite feisty eh? Okay I don’t like being dragged into to any kind of scandal and I know your client is only after my money so can we settle out of court?”

She frowned and shook her head

“Why the sudden need to bail?” she asked

And he studied her for about a minute, the smell of her perfume lingered on his nostrils; it was magnolia one of his favorite fragrances he smiled then he said

“I don’t want any scandals”

She rolled her eyes and said

“Have your lawyer call me. We’ll work out a plan” then she stepped into her car turned on the ignition and drove off.

Desmond Emeka Chiodo is the only son of Chief Nnamdi Chiodo, former Senate President and a very wealthy businessman. Desmond was calm, handsome and hardworking but he was single and that made a lot of woman chase after him. They bombarded his phones with calls and whenever he went out on either a business meeting or a social gathering, he would have at least two or three women deliberately flirting with him, some would deliberately flash their boobs at him or hold on too tight whenever he gave them a hug. At a point in his life time he enjoyed the attention and had several flings with few of them but he had grown tired of all that drama that came with being with so many women.

So he cut down on the women and tried as much as possible to stay with one woman. He settled for Amanda she was beautiful and a successful business woman, she had a lot of connections, she was quite articulate and intelligent but Desmond and Amanda couldn’t see eye to eye on a lot of issues and they would argue for days. Amanda was super insecure, she would fight him over the most trivial things, and she was suspicious of every woman and wanted to make every decision even those that concerned his business.

Desmond was calm and not really a talkative but he wasn’t a weakling and in as much as he respected women he didn’t like to be cornered or emotionally blackmailed into doing things he didn’t want. So after a few months of dating, he decided to call it quits. And just as he had expected she ranted, accusing him of cheating, she ran to the press and made loads of accusations but he paid no mind to her. After Amanda, he met a South African model on one of his trips to the US.

She was tall and beautiful and they hit it off almost immediately, they dated for a few weeks and then he found out she was a call girl and had a reputation for defrauding a lot of men. And then he ended the relationship. With that he gave up on women for a while, it was a better alternative to all the drama women brought.

He looked at the $1500 watch on his wrist and rubbed his temples, then picked up the intercom and dialed his secretary she picked up immediately

“Ask Samson to see me immediately” he said and dropped the device in its cradle

Samson was his personal assistant, they were pretty close despite that fact that Samson worked for him

“Boss, you sent for me.” Sam said as soon as he walked in

“Yea, I wanted to know if I have any event this weekend”

“Yes you do, Senator Danjuma’s book launch tonight, and Ireti’s wedding tomorrow”

“Which one can I miss?” he asked and Sam chuckled

“I don’t think you can miss either, but if you can send Ireti a gift then make an appearance at the book launch.”

“Ok book launch it is then” Desmond said and dismissed Samson.

Barbara stared at herself in the mirror. She packed her long curly hair into a bun and applied some mascara, she didn’t want to go out tonight but she was bored and she knew that an event like this one would give her the opportunity to meet high end clients, plus there would be great wine and food. She picked up her purse and adjusted her dress then walked out of her home; she carefully locked the front door and asked the security man to open the gate for her.

When she got to the venue of the book launch, she handed the security her pass and walked into the hall filled with the VIP’s of the country, she smiled at those who cared to smile at her and ignored those who didn’t. She found her seat and settled in then grabbed a glass of champagne from the usher that walked passed her, she took a gulp and placed the glass on the table and then scanned the room for any familiar face so that she could make small talk with and meet a few powerful people and get some contracts or better still increase her clientele. As she turned towards her left she recognized a colleague of hers, they had met once or twice in court and she got up to meet him

“Hello” she said with a smile, she had forgotten his name probably because he wasn’t too important

“Hi Barbara, you look absolutely stunning” he said with a green and Barbara looked away in irritation

“Thank you” she replied and almost instantly her eyes caught a man removing a phone from someone’s jacket

“Excuse me” she said and hastily walked after the pick pocket and grabbed him by the arm

“Hand that phone you just stole, you son of a bitch” she muttered and the young man saw the stern look on her face and realized that she was dead serious

“What are you talking about?” he asked trying to sound innocent but the tremble in his voice gave him away

“Oh you want to deny it? Great I will have security here in an instant” she said and gestured towards one of the security men that stood at one of the entrances. And the man quickly gave her the phone and hurried out of the building. She turned around to find the owner of the phone and he was still standing at the spot where the phone was taken from his pocket. She tapped him by the shoulder and when he turned around it was Desmond

“Hello” he said with a grin.

“Hi, uhmm someone tried to steal your phone, its right here”. She said and handed him the phone. He smiled gratefully at her

“Thank you so much” he said and she nodded and turned around to leave but he stopped her and said

“Walk with me, let us go to a more private place so we can talk”

“Why?” she asked with a raised brow and he chuckled.

“Just chit chat, get to know each other.” And with that he locked his arm with hers and led her out of the overcrowded hall.

They walked out of the hall and as soon as they stepped out Barbara reached into her purse and brought out a cigarette and lifted it to her lips. He watched her as she lit it and then he shook head

“You know tobacco is dangerous to your health right?”She scoffed and said

“You know it’s none of your business right?” he smiled

“So how long have you been practicing law?”

“A few years”

“Hmmm, so you’re here alone? No date?”

“Is this your way of asking if I am single?”

He laughed and said

“Well, yea if you put it that way. So are you single”

“Yes, I am single and I want to remain that way”

“Oh… okay.”

There was brief silence and Desmond watched her as she smoked. God she was beautiful, her hair hung beautifully on her shoulders and her face was perfect. Barbara tried to ignore the fire that burnt from Des’s eyes, she watched him from the corner of her eyes, he was handsome; there was something about him that made her knees weak. She’d been lonely for so long that she longed to be in the arms of a man. She hadn’t known him for too long but she felt drawn to him.

“I’ve had a long day out. I’d like to leave now” She said as she dropped the finished cigarette on the grown and stepped on it

“Okay then, let me walk you to your car” he said

When they got to her car she held out her hand to him and said

“It was a pleasure to see you again Mr Desmond”

“The pleasure is all mine.” He said and lifted her hands to lips

She felt a weird sensation throughout her body and she shivered a little.

Hilary smiled and clasped his hands together as he watched Rita powder her face. He considered himself the luckiest man on earth to have such a beautiful woman love him so dearly.

“How do I look?” she asked her eyes twinkling with laughter

“Fabulous my dear” Hilary said and leaned towards her

“I’ve got to run now, I’ll call you” she said and hurriedly planted a kiss on his nose.

Before he could say a word, she was already out of the door. “I love you” he mumbled and settled down on the bed in his one room apartment. He buttoned his shirt and brushed his hair, he had to see his friend Patrick who wasn’t feeling too well.

After dressing up he carefully locked the door to his apartment and headed for Patrick’s house which is a fifteen minute walk from where he lived. As he walked he couldn’t keep his mind off Rita, they met five months ago at a supermarket and he was attracted to her the moment he laid his eyes on her. Few weeks after, they began dating and for him every moment with her was even more exciting than the last. She was everything he wanted in a woman. Her voice, her laugh, her touch, everything about her had an effect on him. As he wandered in his thoughts he noticed that he was already at Patrick’s.

He knocked on his friend’s door and patiently waited for an answer; sooner than he expected the door opened to reveal his friends moderately furnished sitting room.

“Man Pato…” Hilary said in a loud voice and gave his friend a brief hug

“Mr. Hills, it’s good to see you man.” “What happened man?” Hillary asked assessing his friend with a weak frown

“Malaria wan wound your guy oh. But I have treated and I feel a lot better, I will be in the office by Monday”

“Please come back to work oh, that place is really boring without you, director is getting more paranoid these days. E be like say that her husband no dey service am well”

“Pay no mind to her; women are like that once they find themselves in power” Patrick said waving his hand dismissively

“Oh please don’t apologize. What do I offer you?” “Nothing please, what’s up with that cute girlfriend of yours Olivia?”

“Ah she’s fine she just left here some minutes before you came in.” Patrick said and there was a brief silence,

he didn’t want to talk about Rita Hillary’s girlfriend he heard she was getting married in a fortnight and he knew how fond of her he was. He could only imagine the feeling of hurt and betrayal Hillary would be feeling at that time. But at the same time it would be unfair to pretend as if he didn’t know.

The best thing to do was to sympathize with his friend and colleague.

“I’m really sorry about Rita. I can’t believe she would do such a thing to you. She seemed like a pretty nice lady”

“Rita? What about her?” Hillary asked innocently.

“I mean what she did to you. Olivia told me, I’m really sorry”

Patrick repeated “Rita and I are doing fine and we are happy, in fact she left my place just before I headed here.” Hillary said with laughter in his voice.

“How could Rita be so heartless? She didn’t tell you? Hills she’s getting married in two weeks.”
