HURIWA condemns police, military over attacks on Aba traders By Madu Onuorah Abia State Governor HE Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Maj.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, to order the arrest and prosecution of army operatives who at the weekend alleged killed innocent bystanders at the Ariaria International Market in Aba, Abia State. It also demanded the arrest and prosecution of some alleged rogue police officers who equally killed a cobbler in Aba earlier yesterday at the same market. In a joint statement, the HURIWA National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, and National Media Affairs Director, Zainab Yusuf, said the police officers who killed the shoemaker must be prosecuted or the group would sue the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity. Similarly, the group gave the army hierarchy seven days to arrest the said soldiers who allegedly used brute force, which resulted to death of over four traders in the market. The statement read: “We have just defended the military as an institution over its indictments by Amnesty International for crimes against humanity in its operations against terrorists in the North East of Nigeria because we are convinced that as an institution, it does not, as a policy, tolerate human rights violations committed by its operatives.” According to the statement, the victims “were forced on gun points to close shops following a peaceful protest by other traders in another section of the market over the extrajudicial killing of an innocent shoemaker, who was hit by stray bullets shot by some policemen who came to arrest suspected hemp smokers, who nevertheless ran away from the police.” Should Buratai refuse its demand, the group said it would also petition the United Nations Human Rights Council, “and mobilise forces in the organised civil society to sensitise the international community that the new military authorities in Nigeria have started executing innocent persons in the guise of quelling civil protests. “President (Muhammadu) Buhari should show Nigerians that he has truly become a democrat by ensuring that those who carry out extra-legal executions of unarmed civilians are prosecuted and executed for mass murders.” Abia State Governor www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/08/huriwa-condemns-police-military-over-attacks-on-aba-traders/ |

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, on Tuesday cautioned against the attacks on some police stations and formation across the nation. Arase made this disclosure in a statement issued by CP Emmanuel Ojukwu, the Force spokesperson in Abuja. The IGP observed that an attack on a police station was a criminal offence and anyone caught in the act would be prosecuted. He urged members of the public to desist from such act as the consequences of indulging in such an action are grave. The police boss ordered all field commanders to use all force permitted by law to protect their stations and formations. “Members of the public are advised to explore available and appropriate channels to ventilate their grievances,” Arase disclosed. dailypost.ng/2015/08/04/igp-cautions-against-attacks-on-police-formation/ |

Mob attack DCO in Aba over killing of trader August 3, 2015 : Stephen Ukandu 8 Comments The Divisional Crime Officer of the Ariaria Police Division, Aba, Abia State, identified simply as Mohammed, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, narrowly escaped lynching by an irate mob, who were protesting against the killing of a trader. The incident which occurred on Friday reportedly caused disrupted business activities in the market and its environs. It was gathered that some security operatives had raided the area, creating pandemonium which led to the death of the trader. It was said the police were behind the raid, which made the crowd storm the Ariaria division, as they protested against the killing. But the Abia State Police Command although one person was shot, the police were not responsible. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Udeviotu Onyeke, said the men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency raided an area, which was suspected to be a haven for hard drug sellers and buyers. Onyeke said the operatives of the NDLEA were resisted and they later reinforced and stormed the area again, resulting into clashes during which the victim was shot. The PRO said the mob took the corpse of the victim in a wheel barrow to the Ariaria Police Station to vent their anger on the police. He said, “Efforts made by the DCO to explain that the police did not raid the market proved abortive as he was beaten into pulp by the mob. The protesters descended on him, gave him a deep machete cut in the head and he became unconscious. “They snatched the DCO’s riffle and phones and was about to set the police station ablaze when they were repelled by policemen from the Aba Area Command.” The police spokesman said the DCO was later revived at a hospital in the area. He added that the irate mob later attacked a police post in the Urata area of the commercial city where they burnt two vehicles. Onyeke said that no arrests had been made, but added that police had commenced investigation into the matter. He appealed to Aba residents to reject any incitement against security agents, adding that those found culpable would be made to face the full wrath of the law. However, the outlawed Radio Biafra monitored in Aba gave a different version of the scenario, broadcasting that “three innocent Biafran activists” were shot by Nigerian soldiers. The anchor person called on the international community to carry out investigations into the alleged killings, threatening that if nothing was done, the group might go on reprisals.http://www.punchng.com/city-news-feature/mob-attack-dco-in-aba-over-killing-of-trader/ |
