Can someone teach me how to write and read in Igbo? Abeg, i need am. I always feel left out in all the Igbo writing topic. I know to how speak it though and understand it but writing and reading, not so much. I also need help in Nigerian pidgin. Me i don't know how to write it. I kinda speak it, i understand it alot, i can read it but i don't know how to write it (well i do know how to write it alittle bit) I need a teacher. I go pay you ooh. 5 naira every week!!!!! Learning languages at adulthood requires commitment and patience. Uwandiigbo is a yahoo groups dedicated to Igbo studies. You can ask questions and get replies. They also have self-paced studies. Good luck. Jisi ike |

Ifygurl:Ifygurl, na serious affair if you're offering to pay.  Me sef, I still dey learn pidgin. No be small thing oo, but I dey try. As for writing Igbo, na you fit teach yourself. Writing and reading Igbo no go be difficult to learn if you sabi speak am well well. I practically learned it myself. . . If you sabi speak Igbo well well, then all you really need to know is the alphabet. Here: http://ilc.igbonet.com/lesson01/ This should help you get started. Uwandiigbo is definitely a good place to go, especially if you want to ask questions and get answers. Now, make we discuss fee for this bit of advice. Yeah Ify. . . . . . Good Luck. I remember me last summer tryna brush up on my Igbo skillz. Yeah but I quit. Because I really didn't have any reliable person to teach me. Cause Idk why all these native speakers feel the need to be all cocky and shyte. Oka you know I grew up abroad so for me to fully grasp the accent is not easy. So they get all cocky like "Awwww. . . , you Americans" And blah blah blah. Which is why I'm so hesitant in speaking Igbo cause I know I'm just going to get chatised for it. And like I don't have to much support so it is like "whats the point?!?". So I gave up. I'm alright in just being able to fully understand but to speak, forget about it. |

Ify, sorry ooo but we r in da same boat. I can speak igbo well but writing and reading gives me special headache. As for broken english, i hardly understand but ma friends alwayz write it so am begining to write it, lol Kpele ooo, i have given up as in wuteva goes. As i heard, igbo is easy to read and write. just write it as u say it. good luck |

Idk hotstep. . . . . but I have really given up in learning Igbo. Which is weird because I'm fluent in Spanish but Igbo I'm like, ermmmm. . . . NO! Like I have tried to learn and I have asked people on here to help but like yeah it was effective throughout the beginning and then it was like whatever. |

@TOH They are the reason why I don't and many of my friends raised abroad don't speak the language. Because are only made fun of if we try. I remember one time my sibling had asked my mom a question in Igbo. This lady went and called my best friend's mom and was just chuckling up. And so now he no longer attempts to speak it. All we do is get chastised for speaking it so why bother? @Hotstep Igbo was spoken in my home. I can fully understand the language. I don't have any problem in hearing it. It is just speaking it that is the problem. |

Onyinye2, I can understand you giving up because of lack of support, but saying that Igbo is hard. . . hmm. . . I know it can be difficult, but hard to the point where one would give up doesn't seem characteristic of the Igbo that I know. If you say you can fully and completely understand it, then it shouldn't be as hard as you're making it to seem. I'd offer to help you, but for 1) you're in a completely different state than I, and learning to speak Igbo is much more profitable if done live where you can hear the person teaching you. and 2) You're family is from Enugu and my family is from Abia. Our Igbo is different from yours and some people may have a problem with me teaching, because I cannot speak Igbo Izugbe or Central or Standard Igbo. Everything I know is dialectal. I can write in Igbo Izugbe to an extent, but I cannot effectively speak it. I'll just say that you shouldn't mind the native speakers that (as my parents often say) 'make jest' of your american accent whenever speaking Igbo. It happens like that for every language. Even those trying to learn to speak American English get mocked for the accent. Also, it isn't a sign of cockiness. It's just that it is funny for any native speaker of a language to watch someone else try to learn and speak their language. Maybe your parents and other native speakers are taking it overboard, but that shouldn't outrightly deter you. Aside from that, the only real problem with learning to speak Igbo is the tonality (like most other West African languages). After that comes learning about the context and how the contexts can make words, phrases, and sentences mean different things. You just have to get used to speaking with the intonations. It's going to be a trecherous journey all by itself, but once you get passed that, everything else should be a breeze. I can though offer to do audio recordings for you so that you can hear the intonations/inflections. I also know a bit of Enugu Igbo (not entirely fluent in it though), so I can do some recordings in the bit of Enugu Igbo that I know for you. |

Awwww. . . . . . Chi Babes. You know that is really nice of you to say.  Yeah half my family is from Enugu (Father) but my Mom is from Abia State. So I can sort of grasp her dialect but as much as my father's dialect because majority of the people around me are from Enugu State so yeah. And yeah your accent really does affect how you speak Igbo. Oka yeah I have lived in the south all my life so uhmmm. . . . yeah I have wee bit of a "Country Accent". Not like Mississippi or anything but you get the jist. That is why I can speak Spanish because any fool can say "No puedo" and get their point across. But with Igbo, it is like just pronunciation of one letter can change the whole meaning. And also, I don't have too much support. Because yeah alot of people are cocky as hell. And who wants to learn from that person. Some I'm like, I'll just be content in being able to hear Igbo then to speak it. |

it helped me, skooled dere sef though not allowed 2 speak igbo in skool but igbo class and leaving dere 4 sumtime helped |

Treetop20:The hell I would. I would just do what my parents did which is too threaten them if they behave badly, I will just ship them off to Nigeria. I have lost a lot of friends because they left like this. Hotstepper:LMAO!!! Its cool. I will probably start back up with Igbo in the summer but for now, I'm sticking with Spanish and English. |

Hostepper, thanks. Onyinye2, I'm being serious. I can get started on the audio recordings whenever you're ready. I have the equipment for it (I can use my music production studio to do it). I'll have to tell you though, up front (even though it may not really matter now), that I do not speak "City Igbo". I have a more village way of speaking Igbo (as in, I speak with intonations similar to that of those who live in the village -- at least, that's what I've been told. I wouldn't know for sure, because I've never been to the village except for once when I was young, the day we left Naija). |

onyinye2:lol, i was born in Nigeria but i did not grow up there it would be a good idea to send the kids home to get a sense of where they are from but i really do not know how to go about it. |
