The Yoruba Names Of God by Nobody: 4:14pm On Feb 23, 2009
Ive been compiling some of the names for GOD that can be used during worship e.g ancient of days, el shaddai, most merciful, omnipotent GOD, my strong refuge etc.
I was wondering if I could also get names for GOD in my native language yoruba.
Names I currently know include: eru jeje, eledumare, oyigi yigi etc.
I would appreciate it if u can also put the english translations.
Thx.

I hope you realise that Oyigiyigi is a Stone. Oyigiyigi Ota inu omi.

This is what happens when we conflate cultural expressions, we have people singing praises to rocks and branding esu as the devil though he has nothing to do with the biblical satan. I would suggest that you stay with the hebrew terms.

oyigiyigi is a stone?

I thought it meant round or big.

Yep, Oyigiyigi is a rock in traditional yoruba religions. Ask knowledgeable yoruba people.

pastor, let me correct your misinformation that oyigiyigi is a stone. no it is not. it is just an adjective used to qualify the strenght of either a stone or a rock. it means something so strong. i hope you are not confusing oyigiyigi for the word "yangi" which actually means a kind of stone. so oyigiyigi ota inu omi means the "so strong pebble inside water"

it is just like saying lion of the tribe of Judah and you now take that to mean that God is a lion. no, they are just using and attribute of a lion to praise God.

i would really like to learn some more about yoruba traditional religion, if you don't mind why don't you start a thread that could educate us about what the religion is all about. i haven't been able to get the books you recommended the last time we spoke about it.

I am very cautious about setting myself up as a teacher of a subject that I don't know much about myself.  There are many links to explore though.  I find this one very interesting based on the cult of Obatala (yeepa orisha):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb0IqZS37ag

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndmegltREVs

I find this video very interesting cos it shows how the religion was kept in the diaspora.  They try to keep the language but the accentuation is different, the first song is supposed to be Akete Oba.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTR5h9f6sCg

I find this one interesting. Oyotunji is a small community in . . . wait for it . . . South Carolina, USA shocked

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNtbga572ak&feature=PlayList&p=E1B3D75BB7B8B62C&playnext=1&index=3

There's much more if you googled orisha or Ifa.

"Yangi" is which dialect?

I've never heard that word.

Yangi is a yoruba dialect. oyigiyigi does not mean round. it is an adjective that denotes that something is so strong that can not break easily, nor weather easily and can not die easily just like a pebble is strong inside water. that is why yoruba people say "oyigiyigi lota inu omi. awa di oyigiyigi a o ku mo. oyigiyigi lota inu omi.

Yep! I know a verse from Ogbe meji that uses those exact phrases, but I never thought of it as an adjective. I thought Oyigiyigi was the name of the stone. Especially when it says 'We have become Oyigiyigi, we will live forever.' I didn't imagine it was being referred to as an adjective.

Either way it is better translated then as a description of God rather than a Name of God. Oyigiyigi is also something that Human beings can become.

I've heard it explain as something that will not yield or cannot be turned or twisted (hence -yi- in yoruba) while the -gi- sound expresses it's hardness or resilience. Like Igi in wood.

Then again it is a combination of yielding and unyielding (yi and gi). A marriage of opposite characteristics.

these are not names. they are GOD's pedigrees. Yorubas call them ORIKI.

Names are names like OLODUMARE, OLORUN, ELEDA and so on.

@annyplenty,Thanks, If they are not names give out the names so I can also learn from U. If i may ask, are there not Oriki-names? Or what will u call Adunni, Apinke, Ayinla? Are they not different from Oriki-orile or Oriki-Orisun where u sing the praises of one to family and home?
That is not encouraging at all. For me I call my God those names and more, give out names without the orikis of a being from yoruba talkless of He that name all names. Meanwhile, 'pedigree' is totally different from 'Oriki names'.
Thanks.

Are those names to be applied to the Eledumare that Ancient yoruba worshipped or to the Eledumare that yoruba moslems worship, or yet again to the Eledumare that yoruba christians worship.

@Jokerayo

my post was not discredit the lovely attributes of God that you have listed. If you looked up at about 3 posts before your first post, you would see a post i already made by me and later I realised some of the words were attritubes of God. So, my reply to your post also applied to my initial post.

But let me still reiterate. A name is different from attribute. if for instance, your name is jokerayo and you are dark in complexion.dark complexion is one of your attribute and people can call you "adumaradan" that is "darkness glows the skin". the same way, we use attributes of GOD to refer to HIM. On the other hand if you were named adumaradan or adunni on the your were christened, it becomes your name and not your attribute or Oriki.

Lastly, let me say that I love your post so much. It well compiled. It shows the greatness of GOD

Oba toto bi a ro (A King who is truly worthy)

Elewu oye (The one with is robed in royalty)

Aba nise ma pada lehin eni (The one who helps us till the end)

Abe ti lu kara bi ajere (“Ajere” in Yoruba is a type of mesh with wide holes used to make barbecued  corn, fish etc. and this means God’s ear is always open to hear us all at the same time, His omnipresence might come to mind with this attribute)

Ada gba ma paro Oye, Agbalagba Oye (these 2 phrases mean the same thing, but said in different ways, It means an a King who’s royal forever, He never grows old, his kingship is eternal)

Adani ma gba gbe (The creator, who never forgets his creation)

A dani wa ye (The one creates us and places us on the planet earth)

Aduro tini lojo isoro (The one who stands by us in crisis)

Agbani lagbatan (The one who delivers completely)

Gbani, gbani tan sa ya (A deliverer that we can always run to for help)

Agbara nla to so Ile aiye ro (The power that upholds the world)

Ata ile aiye ro bi agogo (The ones who holds the world like a pendulum)

Oba to gbe aiye ro lo ri ofo (The one who suspends the earth on nothing. Halleluyah!!!)

Agbara to bori gbogbo agbara (The power that’s above all powers)

Agbo ma te ni o(The ancient One who never grows weak. Now we know that the strength of anyone wanes as they age, But Jehovah, never grows weak despite His age, Halleluyah!! This is past finding out)

PastorAIO, thanks for wanting the clarification of what the contributors are saying about what God is praised by in Yoruba language. Some of these are purely unIslamic. Examples are the Kiniun awon omo Judahs, Ogbe inu wundia sholas, etc.

We in Islam do not objectify The Almighty by restricting Him as a lion or some animals of some people or lord of some people or using a womb of a virgin as a pad (like in bachelor's pad) for a moment! These are Trinity, and it is strictly Christians. I dont think the babalawos, etc will even stoop that low, since they are usually convinced about their beliefs, knowing their gods, not calling them multi personalities.
