In what may appear as a major political upset in 2011, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] may have ceded the presidential slot to the South East in the next general election. Accordingly, the party said it is the turn of the Igbos to produce the next president at the expiration of the tenure of President Umaru Yar’Adua.

This development may have altered the popular belief that President Yar’Adua will have an automatic ticket in 2011.
Similarly, the party said it had concluded arrangements to summon all its governors to give account of their stewardship as it approaches the next general election. The party is already taking stewardship account from its ministers. No fewer than five ministers had been to the party secretariat to brief the National Working Committee [NWC] of their activities.

The South East zone is therefore expected, according to the PDP, to unite with a view to putting their acts together to clinch the nation’s top post.
“After the presidency moves from the North, after the administration of President Umaru Yar’Adua, we expect it to move to the Southeast. That is the simple truth about it,” Dr Mohammed Bello Haliru, PDP’s Deputy National chairman, declared in Abuja on Thursday when he received the Olokoro community from Abia state, which visited the party’s national secretariat in solidarity with National Chairman, Vincent Ogbulafor.

While emphasizing the need for the Igbos to unite to prove they are capable of handling sensitive posts in the country, he added:“there must be unity among the Igbo race to show that they can be trusted with leadership like the Presidency.

“If the Southeast cannot be united behind a leader or their elders, it would be difficult to entrust the Igbo race with leadership when it moves from the North to the Southeast.” Dr. Mohammed Harilu Bello said.
“ We therefore want to remind you that this is the time for you to work for it. We have no doubt in the leadership of an Igbo man, but the Igbo race must unite to show leadership. They must unite to show leadership in PDP and in Nigeria,” he said.
Apparently to re-echo the party’s position, National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Professor Ahmed Alkali said, “this message from the Deputy National Chairman should not be lost on the Igbo race and what it stands for.”

Earlier, Ogbulafor tasked the Olokoro Community in Abia state to ensure that the PDP wins the next governorship election in the state.
“Make sure that by the next election, we get back the state for the PDP. Let it be a task and a challenge that must be accomplished.”

He welcomed the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) National Treasurer who decamped to PDP, stating that the National Working Committee (NWC) under him would always champion qualitative leadership without cost to Nigerians.
Ogbulafor also disclosed that the party had resolved to summon all its state governors to account for their stewardship so far, explaining that the election year is gradually at hand.

The chickens are coming home to roost. I knew it was only a matter of time. As for the disunity hype,  one wonders what group is united in Nigeria. Buhari contested election against his own Brother Yaradua. Not of talk of Atiku. Till date, their cases are still in court. Who is fooling who here? I dey sidon look

The PDP is simply attempting to use deciet to ensure that Yar Adua gets an easy ride in 2011 from the South-East zone. Ekiti has already shown the PDP that it may find the SW region  'tough' to conquer in 2011. Below is another report that shows more clearly how this is likely a ruse to allow a grossly underperforming and unpopular President  get a second term.

http://www.leadershipnigeria.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3253:seast-to-produce-next-president--pdp&catid=51:cover-stories&Itemid=74

After  eight  years  of  President  Umaru  Musa  Yar'Adua's  tenure,  the  presidency  would  be  zoned  to  the  South-east  geopolitical  zone, the  Peoples’  Democratic  Party said  yesterday.

The  ruling party,  however,  gave  a  caveat:  the  South-east  should  begin  to  show  total  support  for  the  party  and  unity  of  purpose.

National  Deputy  Chairman  of  the  party,  Dr. Bello  Haliru  Mohammed,  dropped  this  hint  yesterday  in  Abuja  when  the  National  Working  Committee (NWC)  of  the  PDP received  a  delegation  of  traditional  rulers  from  the  Olokoro  community  in  Abia  State.

Why will anyone speak of an 8 year tenure for this clueless President ?

I hope it is also clear that the man giving the 'hint' (Dr Bello Mohammed) is the same rabidly pro Yar Adua mouthpiece who foolishly announced that Obama and the US was plotting against the Yar Adua government !!!

The South-East should not allow itself to be used by turncoats like Ogbulafor to make life easy for Yar Adua come 2011. With his hopeless performance it is obvious that only the greatest 'miracle' will see Yar Adua retain power in 2011. Yar Adua sycophants (to include the likes of Bello Mohammed) have already begun that 'miracle' through securing the services of 'guns-for-hire' Igbo leaders like Ogbulafor, Ume-Ezeoke, et al. I just hope the SE region would not fall for the ruse of backing Yar Adua with a bogus assurance of a 2015 Igbo Presidency. Nigerians should unite to boot out , in 2011, a President that is grossly regressing our nation !!!!

That's a good stereotype.  Are you guys more interested in zoning the presidency or how we are improving in Nigeria?. If yaradua is not doing anything, what's the point of voting him in again in 2011. Is PDP the decider of the presidency now or Nigerian citizens?. Which kin nonsense democracy be this?

I wonder why anybody from the southeast should be interested in the presidency of this country as it is presently costituted.I will rather prefer the people who have been ruling to continue until the country in run down totally.

“If the Southeast cannot be united behind a leader or their elders, it would be difficult to entrust the Igbo race with leadership when it moves from the North to the Southeast.” Dr. Mohammed Harilu Bello said.

Sometimes when people talk about unity in the south east i laugh. Is it unity in looting the treasure? Please if obasanjo and yaradua can become president of this country why not allow Andy uba become president to complete the cycle of madness?

Precisely the point. Yar Adua and his followers know that it is impossible for Mr President , on merit , to retain the Presidency in 2011. The man has literally fallen asleep on the job and is in a deep slumber !!!! The attempt to buy (where possible) and bully (where needed) Yar Adua into a second Presidential term , despite his gross ineptitude, began with the deployment of the Chief looter and high Priest of election rigging (Anenih ) as NPA boss and then continued with the shameless refusal to concede Ekiti to the AC .

The offer of the 2015 Presidency is a deceitful 'sweetener' to gain the backing of the South-East region for Yar Adua's realistically impossible 2011 ambitions !!! It is obvious 2011 will be a very Interestinging year !!!!

Left for me, even Andy Uba will be a saint comparing to the person whe shall back to take that useless power from those moronic nigerians. The first thing such person should do is to cede 100% resource control to the Niger Deltans.

The kind of democracy we practiced in this country call for a concern. I don't give a damn if a particular section of the country continue to rule provided there is peace, unity, economic and social development, jobs and enabling environment created for our jobless youths and prospective investors. Whether the Next President is a "Suya man", "Cattle herds Man", "Spare part Man" or "H-factor Man", our leaders should learn to uphold the county's interest above their selfish interest.

What a mega slowpoke!

They definitely saw a great force coming from the south east and s/south, hence the quick change of mind.
Unfortunately for them, Igbo presidency does not make any difference to the Igbos, but having Igbos go about their businesses and faith in any part of nigeria is what does.
Anything less than that, I will throw my full weight behind Uwazurike.

More like born to eat dirt and die in poverty as the slave of some emir or whatever.

Who cares about the presidency. People of the south are much better off than the paupers in the north. Only northern politicians benefit from them having the presidency, while their people up north survive on meals of sorghum and dirt and are the last people in the world crippled about Polio.

I am not clear as to when PDP will zone the presidency to South East. Is it at 2011 'selection' ? or 2015 .

There is a major difference between the two.  YAR A'CLUELESS is not doing anything, he may be replaced by a candidate from South East for the 2011 'selection'

If it is the 2015 'selection' that the PDP have in mind, I am sceptical that they are just using the announcement to get the support of the South East for 2011 'selection' which they will the renedge come 2015. NPN did this in the 1983 election. it is a textbook ploy.

In any evet, those are just the internal working arrangements of the PDP. What happens if another party somehow wins the election or what happens if PDP lose the next election, when does it come to the turn of the South east.

Good governance and leadership is what we need whether it is North, West, South , East or whatever.

NIGERIA, GOOD PEOPLE, GREAT NATION, AWFUL LEADERSHIP

God bless you, you have read btw the lines clearly, support in the southwest is not certain, the niger delta is a no go area, where of cos to do some abracadabra, the east of cos, throw some bones and watch confusion set in, and power will still remain in the north, even if it goes to the east clearly a stooge will be used, do i hear somebody say ike sanda nwachukwu? my brothers, southerners and the northern peasantry, open una eyes nothing is a fluke in this country, there is always a reason behind every move by this feudal cabal, i.e keep the status quo. using various strategies including corruption and military force etc. the truth is coming out slowly.

This is a joke and an insult to the South East

In other to work through this just ask why we are zoning 2015 presidency when we don't know who will lead us in 2011.

in 2007 Yara'adua, Buhari, Bafrawa contested all from the same geopolitical zone and my sense is that they all got votes so how did the North West Unite behind Yar'adua, even in PDP primaries The Governors of Bauchi, Kaduna all contested against Yar'adua in the primaries. So what is the talk about a whole region uniting behind a candidate all about? Is that really possible in a democracy?

I think the only thing I sense Haliru or whatever his name is saying is that the whole South East should vote Yar'adua in 2011 in the hope that Yar'adua and PDP will back a South East candidate in 2015 at which time PDP would have been totally destroyed.

The idea that we are even being asked to condone a Yar'adua second term for whatever reason is patronising and insulting.

The South East should ensure Yar'adua is not voted in wholesale in 2011, even if he wins with votes from other zones so be it.
