Utah paper rejects same-sex wedding announcement

SALT LAKE CITY – A southern Utah newspaper has rejected a gay California couple's wedding announcement, saying its policy is to publish announcements only for marriages legal under Utah law.

The Spectrum in St. George initially accepted a paid wedding announcement for Tyler Barrick and Spencer Jones last week, but then changed course, Jones said. The San Francisco couple were legally married June 17, 2008. They wanted the announcement printed in Jones' hometown paper ahead of a family party next week.

Jones, 30, said he initially agreed to the paper's request that the announcement run without a photo, after a clerk told him the publisher feared the picture might make readers uncomfortable. Then Jones changed his mind and appealed to publisher Donnie Welch, asking him to reconsider.

"After all, our marriage is just as real and legal and entitled to celebration as any of the others that are announced each week in the pages of The Spectrum," Jones, 30, wrote in an e-mail to Welch.

"This simply is not true," Welch replied in an Aug. 10 e-mail, a copy of which the couple provided to The Associated Press. "While that may be the case in some states it is not the case in the state of Utah. As our policy is to run marriage announcements recognized by Utah law, I have made the decision not to run the announcement."

A telephone message seeking comment from Welch was not immediately returned Thursday. The Spectrum is owned by Gannett Co. A message left at Gannett's corporate offices in McLean, Va., was not immediately returned.

As more states move to legalize gay marriage, newspapers across the country are faced with similar decisions. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, which conducts telephone surveys every two years, says more than 1,000 papers have policies allowing same-sex wedding and engagement announcements.

The Salt Lake Tribune, owned by MediaNews Group Inc., has accepted Jones and Barrick's announcement and will run it Saturday.

In 2008, The Spectrum was included on GLAAD's list of "inclusive newspapers."

A GLAAD representative contacted Welch on Wednesday, but wasn't able to change the publisher's mind, said Rashad Robinson, the organization's senior director of media programs. Robinson said GLAAD has also contacted Gannett to express its concern.

"At the end of the day, this is not about their editorial pages or the opinions of their columnists," Robinson said. "This is about the celebration pages reflecting the community, and a community is going to have people from many very different walks of life. We are diminished if our stories are put aside."

On Thursday, GLAAD posted a message on its Web site asking supporters to contact the paper to express concerns. Robinson also said GLAAD plans to contact Spectrum advertisers, many of whom have long-standing nondiscrimination policies.

"So the question is, do these advertisers, who have a long track record of diversity, want to be lumped in with a business decision that falls down on the side of inequality?" Robinson asked.

The California Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal in the state in June 2008, not long before Barrick and Jones wed. Less than five months later, California voters approved Proposition 8, a ballot initiative to ban gay marriage. In May, the court upheld the ban, but also ruled that gay couples who wed before the ban took effect would remain legally married.

Gay marriage is banned in Utah.

Jones, a Utah native, and Barrick, 28, were both raised as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Salt Lake City-based Mormon church is opposed to gay marriage and called on its members last year to give time and money to the campaign to pass California's Proposition 8.

"I've thought a lot about the gay and lesbian kids who are surely all over the place in southern Utah, and maybe it's gratuitous on my part, but they need to see this announcement in the paper," he said. "When I was a kid , I would have loved to have seen a picture of two guys having their life together celebrated in the paper."

Masquerade festival turns sour as policeman kills 10 people, injures 20 others

Tragedy struck at the weekend in Amokwe town in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State as a police sergeant shot 10 people dead and wounded about 20 others.
The incident occurred during the town’s annual masquerade festival. The celebration was allegedly convened by a notable native of the town, identified as Emeka Eze. Masquerades from other neighbouring towns were also invited to the ceremony.

Most people affected by the gunshot were members of the masquerade group invited from Ezeakwu community.
Daily Sun gathered that Eze had invited some policemen to add glamour to the celebration. The policemen were reported to have entertained the participants at the celebration by firing into the air.
Daily Sun learnt that one of the policemen, after they had suspended the shooting into the air, forgot that he cocked his rifle. The gun exploded and killed 10 people while 20 others were critically wounded.

An eyewitness, David Obi Eze, said one Eba, the only child of his parents was among the dead victims. He said Eba was among the masquerades invited from the Ezeakwu community.
Eze stated further that the police sergeant narrowly escaped death by the whisker as an angry mob attempted to lynch him. However, other policemen at the scene succeeded in scaring the people away when they shot sporadically into the air.

He pointed out that the shooting was followed by a serious protest from Ezeakwu community as majority of their sons and daughters were among the casualties.

Andrea Corr wed her billionaire fiancé in a star studded ceremony last Friday. The wedding took place at a beautiful hilltop church in Miltown, Malbay in Co. Clare overlooking the sea. Hundreds of people lined the streets as the bride kept the groom and her A-list guests waiting for over 30 minutes before making her entrance.

The 36 year-old lead singer of 90’s chart topping band, The Corrs, has been dating Brett Desmond for two years. The smitten stockbroker proposed to Andrea last Christmas whilst holidaying in Barbados, her engagement rings is rumoured to be worth over £60,000. Andrea’s new husband comes from a very wealthy and influential background. Brett’s father is one of Ireland’s most successful businessmen and previously owned London City Airport and currently owns a large of share Celtic F.C. as well as the 5 star Sandy Lane Hotel in Barbados which is where, incidentally, Bret went down on one knee.

The Corr front woman was all smiles when she arrived at the church and waved enthusiastically at the waiting crowds. Wearing a customised Vera Wang gown the miniature singer grabbed a few extra inches courtesy of a pair of cream platform shoes. Her two sisters and Corr band mates took on the role of bridesmaids. The pair looked elegant in full length soft lilac dresses. The bridal party all carried discreet bouquets filled with delicate white blooms.

The biggest talking point of the occasion had to be the dazzling A-list guests who were in attendance. Bono caused quite a stir when you roared up in an Italian Maserati sports car which needed to be guarded by four members of security. Bono’s band, U2 were also rumoured to be lined up to play at the reception. Comedian Patrick Kielty and Scottish football manger Gordon Strachan helped make up the 400 strong guest list.

Searching for America’s next eco-model

Organic fashion label Greenloop has launched a US-wide contest for aspiring models to find the woman who can represent sustainable fashion across the country.

"Greenloop’s mission from the start has been to use fashion as a vehicle for environmental advocacy and industry-wide change. A model search and competition is a natural and exciting expression of the Project Green Search mission, given the influential role beauty and fashion play in society," the organisers said in a press release.

The winner will be represented by modelling agencies, receive a wardrobe of eco fashion, and a professional photo session. Greenloop also says she will appear in cover shots and editorials in several print and online magazines, gaining her exposure in order to work with sustainable fashion houses, green product lines, and organic cosmetic companies.

Entries will be accepted through Sept 16. After a week of public online voting, 10 finalists will be invited to Portland, Oregon on Sept 25 to participate in a fashion shoot and walk the runway during Portland Fashion Week as a final test before the winning model is announced.

As the sun set, Hilary Lister, 37, sailed into Dover harbour, Kent, and into the record books to cheers from waiting crowds.

Her 15-mile, five hour sail from Ramsgate marked the final leg of a marathon journey for the Oxford-educated former scientist.

Her sail was brought forward one day at the 11th hour after weather reports predicted adverse conditions for the scheduled voyage on Tuesday morning.

Speaking in her boat at the quayside, Mrs Lister said: "I'm hugely proud of the team, the whole team, who worked so hard for four months without a day off. It's a privilege to be back in Dover. The killer was when the wind died just east of the entrance to the harbour but unbelievably it picked up just as I sailed in."

She added: "We're going to have a meal for the whole crew tonight but we've got an early start in the morning."

Mrs Lister described the highlight of her challenge as being able to see the marine wildlife at close quarters sailing alongside her. She said: "Just seeing whales 35ft long fully breached out of the water was incredible. Two of them jumped like dolphins, it was amazing."

One of the low points, she added, was having to spend £9,000 to buy a reconditioned engine for her ridged inflatable safety boat. She also praised members of the Lions clubs around Britain who had supported her throughout her challenge.

Just before a celebratory bottle of Champagne was opened to cheers and applause, she said: "I'm so relieved to be home but looking forward to the next challenge. One thing I've learnt is that you can't predict the future, we couldn't even predict tomorrow's weather so I'm not ruling anything out or anything in."

Her spokesman, Paul Taroni, praised her determination and courage. He said: "This is an amazing triumph over adversity. Everything that went against her and all the things that went wrong, Hilary overcame to do something truly inspirational. We are all so proud of her."

Teen In Hospital After Carnival Stabbing

A 15-year-old boy is in a serious condition in hospital after being stabbed at Notting Hill carnival, police have confirmed.

The young victim was found collapsed in Monmouth Road at around 7pm after having suffered multiple stab wounds.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We treated a 15-year-old boy for assault and have taken a patient to hospital."

Police earlier reported that the number of arrests at the carnival, Europe's largest street party, had been down on previous years.

By 9pm, officers had made a total of 193 arrests on Sunday and Monday, compared with 227 for the same time during Notting Hill Carnival 2008.

Among those arrested were 38 people who were detained at Victoria mainline station.

Police believed they had travelled in specially to create disorder and they were arrested "in order to prevent a breach of the peace".

They were taken to a south London police station and released at 10pm, after the carnival had finished.

Warm sunny weather brought an estimated 500,000 revellers out to join the raucous celebration in west London.

Performers wearing sequins and dramatic spiralling costumes danced and drummed behind the floats making their way around a 3.5-mile route.

They were joined by impromptu dancing in the side streets as reggae and samba beats blasted out from loud-speakers.

It later emerged that a surprise appearance by singer Miss Dynamite was cancelled due to crowd safety fears.

Event regulators only received notice of the performance hours before the event making it difficult to make the necessary safety arrangements.

A spokesman from Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea said: "It's great that Carnival can attract top talent, but we need more time to make sure that such an event can pass off safely.

"Miss Dynamite has a huge following; her appearance would draw many spectators to an already highly congested part of the Carnival area."

St John Ambulance said that by 4pm today they had treated 117 people, with 16 being taken to hospital.

You can't tell me the King of Pop is dead, because I ran into him at least 15 times at the baddest birthday party in history, hosted by director and Jackson friend Spike Lee. Despite the rain, thousands of adoring fans flocked to Prospect Park in Brooklyn on Saturday (August 29) to wish Michael Jackson a happy 51st birthday.

Before making my way in, I stopped to sign the memorial wall where fans were leaving heartfelt messages for the late pop icon. I even put an MTV stamp on the wall to show our appreciation for how Jackson revolutionized music videos (after all, will anyone ever top "Thriller"?). As I made my way through the crowd, I was overwhelmed by a plethora of Michaels: Red leather jacket "Thriller" Michael, white tank top "Dirty Diana" Michael and sequined "Billie Jean" Michael, but my favorite was a six-year-old boy with his hat hung low over his eyes like "Smooth Criminal" Michael. The signature sequined glove covered the hands of thousands of fans both young and old, with most rocking MJ T-shirts, buttons and hats.

Spike opened the festivities by introducing Al Sharpton, who proclaimed "This is Brooklyn at its best , Michael Jackson style!" Ed Lover, former host of "Yo! MTV Raps," was joined on stage by Tracey Morgan and former "106 & Park" host Free, and the group danced on stage building the momentum. Finally, it came: DJ Spinna dropped "Thriller" onto the turntables and every sequined glove went up in the air, waving in unison imitating the gothic figures from the classic video.

"P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" and "Wanna be Startin' Somethin'" followed immediately as fans wildly waved bright orange and black signs with the song's famous tag line.

Eligible and wealthy Prince Harry turns 25

LONDON – Prince Harry turned 25 on Tuesday, becoming an even more eligible bachelor as he gained access to part of his inheritance from his mother, Princess Diana.

The quarter-century mark denoted a coming of age for the flame-haired prince, who is third in line of succession to the British throne and possesses both his mother's sense of adventure and her common touch.

The younger son of Diana and Prince Charles spent his birthday continuing his pilot training in the Royal Air Force, but he was hardly out of the spotlight.

British media ran a flood of pictures, showing Harry's steady progression from a toddler in short pants to an earnest soldier in combat gear. At each step — with his easy smile and approachable ways — he reminded many of Diana.

Other sympathetic images included the 12-year-old boy who walked behind his mother's coffin to Westminster Abbey and the confident 24-year-old who spoke movingly at a memorial service in 2007 about "the best mother in the world."

"When she was alive, we completely took for granted her unrivaled love of life, laughter, fun and folly. She was our guardian, friend and protector. She never once allowed her unfaltering love for us to go unspoken or undemonstrated," he said.

Harry and his brother Prince William were left equal shares in their mother's estate following her death in a 1997 car crash in Paris. At the time, the shares were estimated to be about $10.6 million each. Diana's estate was comprised mostly of her divorce settlement from Charles.

The Sunday Times Young Rich List — published in April — guessed that Harry and William were each worth 28 million pounds ($46 million). It did not break out how much was related to Diana's estate, and the present value of Diana's estate has not been disclosed.

Under Diana's will, the princes are entitled to all the income from their share when they are 25 and they gain access to the capital at age 30. William is now 27.

Patrick Jephson, who was involved with Diana's finances when he worked as her private secretary, said the princess' money was "very prudently" invested and that Harry will also have access to some of the considerable wealth generated by the Duchy of Cornwall, which is under Prince Charles' control.

"Of all the concerns that a young man in his position might have, money is not one of them, and likely never will be," Jephson said.

As a lieutenant in the British Army, Harry's annual pay is between 29,006 to 32,061 pounds per year ($48,000 to $53,000).

Harry and his brother each have a flat at Clarence House, Charles' official home in London. He is not covered under the government's grant to Queen Elizabeth II, which pays for her and her husband Prince Philips' expenses.

Dickie Arbiter, former royal spokesman and now a commentator, said Harry's new wealth was unlikely to change his life.

"I doubt whether he'll touch the money because he manages quite well with his Army salary. What does he need to spend it on? Very little," Arbiter said on Sky News.

London tabloids would beg to differ.

News reports have suggested that Harry and former girlfriend Chelsy Davy may be rekindling their yearslong romance. The Sun newspaper reported they were at a club in London for a pre-birthday celebration earlier this week.

Prince Henry Charles Albert David was born in 1984, fulfilling what Diana had called her duty to produce "an heir and a spare."

His life in the royal fishbowl has not been easy. He earned an unwanted reputation as a wild child — smoking marijuana, wearing Nazi gear to a costume party and nightclubbing his way through London's hot spots. Lately, though, he seems to have embraced a soldier's life, albeit with a few more material perks than most young officers.

Harry's military career, including a 10-week stint with the British Army in Afghanistan in 2007-2008, has helped make the public forget the earlier image of him as a thoughtless carouser.

After reportedly being seen drinking and smoking marijuana, his father dragged him off to see a rehabilitation center. The prince also had to apologize four years ago when a newspaper got hold of a photograph of him wearing a Nazi swastika at a costume party.

There was more trouble when his art teacher at Eton College, Sarah Forsyth, testified at an employment tribunal that, on orders from a superior, she wrote nearly all the text of an art project that Harry submitted to pass an important exam in 2002. Forsyth won a claim of unfair dismissal against the college.

There was more embarrassment in January when a newspaper disclosed a video clip of Harry referring to a Pakistani cadet with a derogatory term.

Now, apparently happily settled into his army career, Harry has become more careful not to be seen stumbling out of posh nightspots in the wee hours of the morning. He is patron of six charities including Setebale, which he co-founded with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho to support orphans. He and his brother held a charity motorcycle drive in Africa last year.

Harry is third in the line of succession to the throne, behind his father and his elder brother.

There are precedents for younger brothers to become king, including Harry's great-grandfather, King George VI who stepped in when his elder brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated.

More likely, Harry will fall further back in the line of succession if William has children.

Jephson said the young prince went through some rocky patches but is now living up to his parents' high expectations.

"His record of service to the country, both in the army and in his royal duties, would surely make both his parents and his grandparents very proud," he said.

We're like, 'You have no involvement in planning this. Just get ready to have a good time.'"

Middle brother Joe told the mag it's not going to be a cliche bachelor event. "It won't be in Vegas. Vegas is not really the ideal place. We are thinking somewhere even cooler and better," he told the mag.

£51 EBay bid wins one couple a complete wedding package

One couple really struck gold after a hotel put a complete wedding package up for sale on EBay following a cancellation. Despite setting aside a maximum of £1,000 for the bid, all it took was a mere £51 to secure the wedding deal.

As part of the bargain nuptials the couple were treated to a red carpet welcome with a Bucks Fizz reception followed by a 3 course meal for 35 guests, a toastmaster and a further evening buffet for 50 guests. And to end the perfect day the newlyweds were treated to a complimentary overnight stay in the hotel’s honeymoon suite.

After contacting the 3 star Buckatree Hall Hotel in Shropshire with a view to booking their wedding there, the hotel’s staff tipped the couple off to the cancellation slot which had just gone up for sale on EBay. Ordinarily a wedding reception at this venue would set you back at least £1,555. Groom-to-be Les Clark had just been made redundant from his Civil Engineering position so their wedding was being conducted on a very tight budget.

As a regular EBay user, Les wasted no time in placing a bid for the wedding reception. The bride, Colette Palin said they jumped at the opportunity saying:”We just thought we would see if we could strike lucky.” And Strike it lucky they did, winning the package for just £51.

And the bargains kept on coming as the 25-year-old bride managed to find the perfect dress with a whopping 50% discount taking the cost down to £450.

The hotel’s manager, Jason Petty, explained that they had the idea of posting cancellation bookings on EBay a while ago, and the lost wedding booking gave them the perfect opportunity to try out their new strategy as he said: “The date came up and we knew we weren’t going to sell it so I thought, let’s go for it.”

The newlywed’s lucky streak shows no signs of stopping either; since they tied the knot Les has found a new job and Colette has revealed she is expecting their first baby in spring of next year.

The Donald's daughter has tied the knot.

Ivanka Trump and New York Observer Publisher Jared Kushner were married Sunday at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., during a lavish ceremony and reception, according to People.

The daughter of real estate mogul Donald Trump wore a Vera Wang gown inspired by Grace Kelly and celebrated the day with more than 500 guests.

Guest Regis Philbin serenaded the newlyweds during the reception planned by celebrity event designer Preston Bailey.

"I always envisioned myself having a traditional and elegant wedding," Trump, 27, told Brides.com after her engagement in July.

Trump tweeted just hours before exchanging vows with Kushner, 28: "Just finished a gorgeous hike. The leaves are spectacular and the sun is shining. Everything is simply perfect! I'm getting married today!"

A jilted bride turned her heartache into a Happy Halloween for hundreds of senior citizens.

Teanne Harris, who lives outside of Chicago, was supposed to walk down the aisle Saturday when her fiance suddenly got cold feet.

And when Harris and her mom went to retrieve their deposit from the suburban catering hall where the reception was to be held, they were told it was too late.

Sitting in the parking lot sad and depressed, Harris was commiserating with her mom, Bari, when they glanced over at the Asbury Court Retirement Community across the street - and a light bulb went off in their heads.

"It was a hurtful time for her," said Mary Eichenfeld, the resident services director at the facility in Des Plaines, Il. "They were just sitting in their car and decided to make something good out of the disastrous situation."

Instead of letting a Halloween-themed wedding reception go to waste, Harris, 34, and her mom decided to move the festivities across the street.

"She came in one day and said she wanted to make a donation," said Eichenfeld. "I don't think she knew anybody here, and we don't get offers like that. So we were thrilled and so were our residents. It came out of the blue."

By all account, the bash was a blast. The wedding DJ played oldies. The tables were decked out with candy jars and feathered masquerade masks. The banquet hall served up a senior-friendly meal. And the guests dressed up as everything from Dracula to Raggedy Ann.

As for the bridal bouquet, Harris had it placed in the chapel of the old folks' home.

"She came to the party and while I saw her smiling, I'm sure she was feeling pretty bad," said Eichenfeld.

Harris's mom, Bari, said she too felt sad for her daughter but glad she could give the seniors a treat.

"Yes, there's mixed emotion," she told the local CBS station. "It could have been a lot worse, just sitting at home, knowing that nothing was used."

Harris was believed to be en route to Hawaii on Monday and could not be reached for comment. Her intended, who is identified on her on-line wedding registry as Matt Harker, did not return a call for comment.

"That was supposed to be her honeymoon, but she's going alone," said Eichenfeld. "I say good for her. I hope she finds a nice guy who deserves her."
