SURROGACY
Surrogate parenting is not new to one of the neighbours of this writer who gave his name only as Dinfa, he claimed that the immediate younger sister to his best friend has rented her body to bear a child for a couple in one of Abuja’s richest and famous districts.
Incidentally, the practice comes with some conditions. According to Dinfa, the contract with this particular lady only allows for her family members to see her for one hour twice a month, and no stranger was allowed to come along.

‘’If madam is asleep, you can sneak in” from the main gate to the sitting room.

The house was extraordinarily beautiful with stylish wooden chairs at the open sun terrace by the entrance of the house.

The wealth expended to decorate the sitting room equally radiates in the body and appearance of once poor Victoria.

Victoria’s story was simple, after her secondary education three years ago she was impregnated by her boyfriend and could not abort the unwanted pregnancy “due to certain issues,” she said unfortunately the baby was a still born upon delivery.

“Since then I became a born again Christian and I got a job in a pharmacy at Wuse area. Later on I began to attend a wonderful church whom my employer introduced me to. That was where I met this couple and when I heard their story especially the humiliation madam suffered for her inability to bear a child I felt for her,” said Victoria.

According to Victoria who is 21, even the word surrogacy was not known to her when she made up her mind to help this couple let alone its implications. “My only fear then was the medical check-up I was going to undergo and how to convince my brother (guide) to talk to mum because dad is late.”

The tests were successful. Victoria was cleared of having any kind of disease. Her mother, only brother and three other sisters gave her their blessings. Everyone has agreed that Victoria has travelled with relative to abroad to work as a nanny to them. While madam to whom she is bearing a child for equally puts up the same story for her in-laws to nurse her pregnancy abroad where there is excellent medical services.

The two women are said to have never gone out of the house for the past four months since Victoria was artificially inseminated with the sperm and egg of her host family “because madam cannot go through pregnancy.” She is very excited “I am going to give birth abroad, we may leave when the pregnancy is seven months.” |The expression on the face of Victoria revealed that she does not harbour the slightest regrets for her actions.

“My sister was given 400,000 naira before the pregnancy and after three months of delivery and breastfeeding she will be given 600,000 naira, this is in addition to a six-month trip abroad,” Victoria’s brother explained, adding that for their family this is a break through. “The money given so far has been invested in their education and retail business for the family.” he concluded.

All over the world infertile couples have an option that was never available a couple of decades ago and many have suffered either divorce or from high blood pressure that led to several deaths. But thanks to high-tech science that have made it possible for people like poor Victory to rent her body to help a rich couple desperately in search of a child.

But what are the ethical and moral implications of this kind of assisted reproductive techniques? When young girls like Victoria rent their body to have a baby because large sums of money are involved and an opportunity to go abroad, it has become an “involuntary servitude and slavery” said Zara Ibrahim Musa, a banker with Jaiz in Abuja.

One account said the rich are “strip-mining the fertility of the poor.” In the United States, where this practice is no longer news, the New Jersey Supreme Court recognized the potential for the rich to exploit the poor and in a surrogacy case stated: “There are, in short, values that society deems more important than granting to wealth whatever it can buy, be it labour, love or life.”

The Supreme Court of France also stated that surrogate motherhood violates a woman’s body and that “the human body is not lent out, is not rented out, is not sold,” said the account. “We will wait to hear what our Supreme Court in Nigeria will say about Surrogacy,” Zara intoned.

In this case Nigerians are lying and hiding their contracts with surrogates not because the law forbids it but because of the stigma such a contract may create due to the strong culture of traditional parenthood. The World Health Organization (WHO) admits that the field of assisted reproductive techniques “constantly challenges social norms, moral and ethical standards and legal systems.”

However, one observer said he does not have problem with the recent South African surrogacy case where a 48-year-old South African gave birth to her own three grandchildren. Pat Anthony acted as surrogate mother for her 25-year-old daughter, whose uterus was removed three years ago. Mrs. Anthony was implanted with four of her daughter’s eggs that were fertilized in a laboratory with sperm from her son-in-law.

She gave birth to triplets; two boys and a girl were delivered by caesarean section at a Johannesburg hospital. This case, according to moralists, added fuel to the moral and legal controversy surrounding surrogacy and a religious dilemma, since the family in question are Roman Catholics, and the Vatican has condemned surrogacy.

This observer said, the 48-year-old mother did very well, “she bore her daughter for nine months, took care of her throughout her life and when she married her out she realised that her daughter is barren and she sacrifice her body for her daughter’s happiness and her own happiness as well. Her daughter has three children the mother has three grand children.”

In the past, there was only one way to have a baby, but modern technology has added variations that ignited debates that listed several new reproduction techniques: “(1) Artificial insemination of the wife (either by the husband’s seed or by a donor’s). (2) Embryo transfer. If the woman cannot produce viable eggs, another woman can be inseminated with the husband’s sperm. The fertilized egg can then be extracted from the female donor and implanted in the wife’s uterus.

(3) Invitro fertilization. The wife’s egg is extracted and fertilized in the laboratory by the husband’s sperm, then implanted in the wife. (4) Surrogate mother. If the wife is unable to go through a pregnancy, another woman can be artificially inseminated with the husband’s sperm and have the baby for them. (5) Frozen materials. Sperm, eggs, and embryos can all be frozen and stored for use in one of the ways outlined above”

Victoria claimed her pregnancy was a combination of number 3 and 4 mentioned above. But do our society and most especially religion permit such a practice? Surrogate pregnancy is not allowed in Islam because of the issues of parentage and inheritance. According to Dr. Muzammil Siddiqi, former President of the Islamic Society of North America, “based on the principle that the Shari`ah came to protect and preserve the lineage or nasab of the people and thus it is haram to marry a woman during her `iddah or to have an intercourse with a woman who is carrying another person’s pregnancy, the Muslim jurists have allowed the use of invitro fertilization only between legally married couples during their marriage. Thus invitro fertilization is permissible as long as the semen and ovum are from the couple who are legally married and the fertilization takes place during their marriage, not after divorce or the death of the husband.

Dr. Siddiqi said “a divorced woman is not allowed to receive the fertilized ovum (embryo) from her ex-husband. Similarly, a widow is not allowed to take it after the death of her husband. Surrogacy, i.e., giving the embryo to another woman to carry on the pregnancy in her womb is also not permissible in Islam,” he concluded.

Popular Christian beliefs stated that gestational surrogacy too defiles the marriage bed. “True, the fertilized egg would be a union of the husband and his wife, but it is thereafter placed in the womb of another woman and, in fact, makes her pregnant. This pregnancy is not the result of sexual relations between the surrogate woman and her own husband.

Thus, her reproductive organs are now being used by someone other than her own mate. This is inconsistent with the Bible’s moral principles that a woman bears a child for her own husband. (Compare Deuteronomy 23:2.) It would not be proper for a man other than the surrogate’s own husband to make use of her reproductive organs. It is an improper use of the marriage bed. Thus, surrogate motherhood is not for Christians,” a widely read Christian publication stated.

Can I ask what caused the blocked tube. I found out that I had pid after a late miscarriage in january and I am just getting treated for it. Though my std tests are negative, my doctor feels it is from bacteria after the miscarriage. What are the risks of having pid for almost 6 months?

I had a second HSG done today. Results are dis-heartening. My tubes are completely blocked.  angry . What kills me is that last year I had one one and i was told that everything was in good working condition. And today, I hear and see something different which makes a lot of sense. i was given a CD of the whole procedure just in case I needed a 2nd opinion. It clearly showed the dye passing through my uterus and then stopping when it got to my tubes. the pain was out of this world!
there are surgeries that can be done to fix the problem but because of my age, my husband and I and my RE have decided that the way to go is IVF. However way a pregnancy is achieved, the end result is all that really matters.
Baby dust and sprinkles to all you beautiful couples struggling like I've been for the past 8 years!

By the way, my doctor says I probably had an infection that wasn't properly treated years ago before I got married. he's right! As a teenager, I once had a staph infection and i didn't seek treatment early enough. the only infection I've ever had in my life and I'm paying for it dearly now! cry

@Arlington
Nice to hear from you, I am glad  all is ok now. The litle ones are tougher than we often give them credit for.

I do not think this thread can ever disappear grin

Those thinking of taking fertilaid, please seek your doctor's opinion to make sure that it is the best option for you , or at least inform your doctor you are taking it so that they may take it into account in what ever treatment thwy have planned for you.

@pslm23
Please take heart.
I am not sure but  there may be a possiblity of tubes sometimes unblocking themselves when infections are fully treated (I think depends on how serious the infection is though).

Take precautions to avoid infections, I do not know what precautions to be taken does anybody know? undecided
Maybe ensuring your partner joystick thouroughly washed and clean before making love and that you avoid using artificial lubrication ? undecided

@bukieluv
that is good news.

ALL YOU NEED TO DO WHEN TRYING TO CONCEIVE IS TO HAVE ENOUGH REST.
I HAVE A SISTER WHO IS A SITE ENGINEER, HAD SERIES OF MISCARRIAGES IN THE PROCESS OF SUPERVISING,
NOT UNTIL SHE QUITS FROM WORK BEFORE SHE WAS ABLE TO GET PREGNANT.

STAY AWAY FROM HOT FOOD, IS NOT GOOD FOR THE BELLY.
HOT WEATHER ANYTHING HOT OR HARSH IS NOT SUITABLE FOR THE BODY.

SOME WOMEN NEEDS TO FLUSH THEIR SYSTEM BEFORE THEY CAN GET PREGNANT.
TRY ANY OF THESE BITTERS NOW AT LEAST FOR A MONTH (THEY ARE GOOD PURGATIVE)

FIBROIDS TOO CAUSE MISCARRIGE, DONT EAT FOOD THAT HELPS FIBROID, CAN GET THAT FROM INTERNET.

IT IS NOT EASY.
BUT ALMIGHTY GOD WILL MAKE IT EASIER FOR THOSE WAITING ON HIM. AMEN

Hello, I need urgent help please. I have been having very mild pelvic pain since february after my miscarriage. It was on and off, a lot of times I actually felt like it was in my head. Earlier this month, pid was suspected and I have taken antibiotics for a month. However, the pain is still consistent. It is not very painful, but I just know something isn't right. I came into accident and emergency yesternite and exaggerated the pain a bit to get urgent treatment because my GP hasn't taken me seriously. Now the docs want to perform a laparoscopy on me tomorrow. I am very scared, a bit of me is thinking the pain isn't that bad and I shouldn't allow them operate on me. What are the risks involved in a laparoscopy? Dyu think with mild pain, I should consent to having one? Should I manage the pain with pain kiLlers instead? Please help!!! I'm really scared

Re: Trying To Conceive A Child? TTC by abby4life(f): 7:06pm On Jul 05, 2011
Hi for the last 3 years I have been having very painful periods late last year I was diagnosed as having a complex mass on my left ovary and a surgery was performed to remove the ovary. I am in a committed relationship with my fiancé at the moment I love him so much cos unlike some men he stood by me through the surgery my future mother Inlaw was equally supportive. After the surgery I was told to conceive a baby immediately cos of my age (32) and the fact that the mass can likely affect my right ovary. We started TTC in march and till now nothing I know it looks short but believe me it's frustrating I went to the GP last week and she told me to keep trying for two years before I can label it as a problem. We hope to go back to naija in jan for our traditional wedding I really hope to be pregnant by then. Btw I have been taking folic acid since march the good thing is my fiancé is not fussy about it but when he took me to meet his family last year they asked why he brought me home before I was preg. Infact I am confused I am thinking of taking clomid to boost my ovulation. Presently I have 28 - 31 day regular period circles

@ Abby4life, don't stress yourself babes. Women normally have 2 ovaries and now you have 1, just searched online and although the two ovaries takes turn in releasing eggs month, one ovary is equally has good as two. What of your hubby 2 b, has he got himself checked as well?
Re: Trying To Conceive A Child? TTC by abby4life(f): 6:58am On Jul 06, 2011
He has not. My gp suggested that I get him tested as well but I do not know how to bring up the subject with him especially since I was the one that had a surgey. This all eats me up and I am dying in silence cause there is no one to talk to. I try not to get my family involved so that they don't bombard me with questions. The last time I brought up the issue of my not conceiving with him he was like why are you so worried, its just been 3 months. I feel so much better after pouring out my heart in this forum cause its like a burden has been lifted from my soul. Only a woman that has gone through this knows how it fells to see AF after a month of baby dancing. Why did I have to lose an ovary I have never been promiscous in my entire life what sins have I committed to be punished like this. I have a wonderful fiance and an equally wonderful mother in law. My younger brother's wife knows about my plight she is pregnant presently, and she has been doing things to crank me up to the extent of going to facebook to post insults that will make me talk to her so that she can call me names to mock my plight. I give myself to God. I will stop here cause I am crying my eyes out

My dear please take it easy,i know how you feel.May God smile on us soon.First of all get your husband to take a sperm analysis test the problem might be from him.I know it's not easy telling him but u have to be courageous, pls try,ok? if he really loves you he wil not object.Try and see an obyg.let him prescribe an ovulation induction drug like clomid, fertility blend, fertilaid and so on.Very soon we wil testify. So take thgs easy.
Re: Trying To Conceive A Child? TTC by Beetle: 12:02am On Jul 07, 2011
@ abby4life, you need to tell him that the GP wants him to get checked as well. it doesn't matter if you've had surgery, you need to be clear and be sure so you know what your next steps will be. It could set you back a few months/years if you both have issues and you're focusing on just one person as opposed to the two of you. If you've been actively trying for 3 months and you're crying your eyes, what should I do in my case? go mad cos I've been trying for nearly 6 years. You've got to learn to develop a thick skin love. People will want to windd you up because they know what's eating you and you let them win if you show them your feelings. if your SIL is posting stuff to wind you up delete her from FB, no crime in deleting her.

I guess you're in UK, get Pregnacare as opposed to Folic acid alone. Hope yhis helps sweetie!
