Nigeria's acting President Goodluck Jonathan has sworn in members of his new cabinet.

A senior executive at the investment bank Goldman Sachs, Olusegun Aganga, has been appointed finance minister.

Thirteen members of the new cabinet are from the dissolved government, Reuters reports.

Mr Jonathan has placed former Mines Minister Deziani Allison-Madueke in charge of the country's oil ministry, a key post in the oil-rich state.

Mr Jonathan has outlined his main priorities as electoral reforms, security in the oil-producing Niger Delta, providing a more reliable power supply and fighting corruption.

In March, Mr Jonathan dissolved the entire cabinet and made new nominations, most of which were accepted by Nigeria's senate last week.

The new cabinet is expected to remain in place until elections due next year.

These are due in April but could be held in January.

President Umaru Yar'Adua has not been seen in public since he fell ill in November 2009.

"I will hate to disappoint you but I will hate even more to disappoint the nation," Jonathan said.

He also told the new ministers that he expected efficiency and results.

"No minister will be allowed to go on a mission of endless search for solutions," Jonathan said. "You must hit the ground running. Time is of fundamental essence and no distraction in our mission will be tolerated."

Regardless of any reservations, the Commander-in-chief has spoken and this is his honeymoon period so lets see whether they produce results.
We have to live with it cos the bucks stops at his table.

Shocked about Bello Adoke (But surely Jonathan Knows something we dont know)

Happy with Daizani Allison (Thought there is something fundamentally wrong if a former Shell Director and Bayelsa lady is being bullied and prevented from emerging as Petroleum Minister, I applaud Jonathan for showing he is ready to take big decisions and stand by them.)

But all in all, GOODLUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! to the new team

I agree with you. The only disappointment is the AGF. but goodluck to Goodluck since we don't know what he knows and why he made that decision. He should have make sure there is no BENUE connection with AGF and EFCC with Waziri and Idonkia antecedent including  IBORI at the helm.

On another level SHARAREPORTERS Got it RIGHT again. Kudos to those guys.

oh!!,,*yawns* pretty boring list i have here,,why was i even looking for some form of exciting portfolio arrangement sef? I have absolutely no faith in this new team bringing about the desired results. Unnecessary optimism has always been the bane of the average Nigerian citizen, and the many shouts of 'hurray' is really making me wan!
I would however keep waiting for Yar'Adua to call on the indigenous Traditional practitioners and marabouts for a meeting. That should bring some real kicks to the economy.,,hehehe!
Stale country!
Re: Jonathan Inaugurates New Cabinet (Full List) by illusion2: 6:48pm On Apr 06, 2010
I'll adopt a 'wait & see' attitude.

For all those complaining about a Minister not knowing 'anything' about a minstry. You are probably misinformed.

A Minister doesn't have to be a Dr to manage the Health Ministry,or be an Engineer to manage Minstry of Works.

As a matter of fact Minster of Justice (where its separate from Attorney-General) need not be a lawyer . . . yes you read right tongue!

Just as Govs don't have to be political science or public admin graduates.

Nigeria: Acting president sacks head of state-run oil company, swears in Cabinet
By Bashir Adigun

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) - Nigeria's acting president sacked the head of the nation's oil company Tuesday, the same day he swore in a Cabinet that put a former oil company employee in charge of the country's petroleum ministry and an investment banker at the helm of its finances.

The moves by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan seemed to cement his power in Africa's most populous nation, despite ill President Umaru Yar'Adua's recent return to the country. Jonathan also said he directly would manage the nation's failing power ministry, a move that could turn around years of struggles to produce power for Nigeria's 150 million people.

Jonathan told the 38 new Cabinet members that they would sign public agreements on what he expected from their ministries. The ministers will be responsible for informing the nation on how they reach those goals, a rare show of accountability in a nation long considered one of the most corrupt in the world.

"I will hate to disappoint you but I will hate even more to disappoint the nation," Jonathan said. . .

Am not impressed but am also not too disappointed.

Aganga is excellent in finance  cool

Have no problem with Allison Madueke as Petroleum Minister. Given the right support, I think she will perform (Congrats to her, if my memory serves me right, think she is the 1st female minister in that ministry)

Odein Ajumogobia, thought will be better as Min of Petroleum, but as still ok by me in foreign affairs, to clear all the mess Madueke left behind

Dora, thought Jo will give her a change. Just hope she has learnt her lessons and will do better this time.

What is the rationale behind Adetokunbo and Yaradua in defense?

Education: dont know her, but hopes she performs well. Education ministry needs a change of direction after Sam Egu mess.

Sanusi Dagash must deliver. Especially on roads.

Power: Who is this Nuhu Somo Wya? undecided I hope Jonathan knows that Power will be one area he will be highly judged.

Now let them get down to business. As they would be judged by their performances & results.

Labaran Maku is somebody I am HOPEFUL will not disappoint.
An energetic  fairly young man in his 40s.
A UniJos bred activist, who was sacked at Champion Newspapers directly by the Publisher, for his alleged 'pro June 12 reports' which was simply another name for bitter truths then.
He has since served his state in various capacities before his current appointment.
I pray our current national challenges brings out the best in him

The ministry aside, I'm not impressed with his bringing back Martins Kuye, who has been a Minister before, and a 'career politician'. Think he would ahve done better using those industrialists in NACCIMMA or MAN or state CIMAs. This Tapgun too appears like someone appointed based primarily of politics symptahy/consideration. Much has been said about Mr Aganga as another Okonjo Iweala. All eyes will surely be on him.
I'm tired of seeing Remi Babalola as junior minister. This man is better than many Senior minister. He was junior to Usman, yet overshadowed him. He was also made Junior to Muhtar, yet almsot overshadowed him. I honestly prefer him as Finance Minister, even ahead of Aganga.

26.National Planning Commission

Why! Why! Why!
I have known Usman for more than a decade and used to respect him when he was CBN Deputy Governor. But I was disappointed at his performance in Finance Ministry. Not sure he was any better in NP. If I were GJ, I will not re-appoint him.
