You are very lucky to have retrived it, but be aware that the email account may have been infected. To check this, ask your friends to alert you of any email sent to them from your account with usually HI, HEY, or simply NO SUBJECT. Once this is noticed, be sure to open another email account, send your contacts message about that, then close the old one, this is the best solution to this resident virus for now.
Cheers!

^^^Or better still, in your settings, some email addresses re meant to be linked to your email in case you forget your password. The scammer must've prolly added his. Go thru your settings and make sure your mails are not being forwarded to any other email addy. . . Also to prevent ur email frm being hacked, try the ff

1.) Do not login in a cyber cafe (Ths seems quite hard buh u nid to abide by this. I can always go to any cyber cafe, install a keylogger on thr system, and once a user puts in his/her login credentials, it gets sent to my mail. So DO NOT login in a cafe. . .be it Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Myspace, whateva).

2.) When the Pop up box comes on and ask 'Dyu want firefox to rememba ur pwd', always click on NO.

3.) When ure done browsing, remember to clear the cookies, histories and what have you.

4.)Do NOT use the same pwd twice i.e. using your yahoo pwd for fbk and d likes.

5.)Finally, use a strong password. Think up something unique. Do not use mother/father/sista/broda's name. Do not use ur date of birth. Do not use ur location i.e. Lagos, Ketu, Ikeja. A best way to choosing ur password is by using a phrase.

Lets say my name is Slyr0x, i stay in ketu, i love gals. . . grin and say my unique no is 7.

In choosing a pwd, iCan go by

Mynameisslyroxistayinketuilovegalsandmyuniquenumberis7

Now dats quite secure. . .How about we using both UPPER and lower cases.

MYnameISslyroxIstayINketuIloveGALSandMYuniqueNUMBERis7

Now this is vewiiiiiii secure.

How about we change the O's to zero, I's to one's, E's to 3, S's to 5, A's to 4

MYnam3155LYR0X15t4y1Nk3tu1l0veG4L54ndMYun1qu3NUMB3R157.

Now this is the most secure. Thats like 54 or thereabout characters. If my example above seems toooo long, try to shorten it.

anD don't share your pwd with spouse/children/friend's. . .cos thats y its called PASSWORD.

Many thanks to the OP for this insightful thread on Phishing emails. When you go to banks in Nigeria these days, you often see people shouting on top of their voices 'won ti wipe owo mi lori ATM' (They have cleared my money on my ATM card). These people are most of the time victims of phishing emails cos they have inadvertently filled forms online.

Nigerians need to be educated that they don't have to put their details on everything they see online. My younger sister had to learn the hard way after paying $75 phone bill in US for putting her phone number on a rogue website despite telling her on so many occasions that she needn't fill out every column on forms after I saw her DOB on skype.

The way these attackers work is to generate and send as many as possible emails(millions even),if just two unlucky victims respond, the attackers are more than happy and count it as a success cos they will sqeeze the victims to a pulp.

So, my fellow Nigerians learn and get secured.

Urm, it isn't called "email phishing" – Anyone can send an email from a feigned address. It's been done by since the 60's. Some use it as a means to just learn the SMTP protocol, others use it as a scare tactic, but please don't use terms you don't understand.

All you need to do is telnet to a remote server (whatever it is), and modify the MAIL FROM header.

You can verify the authenticity of an email from its server name, or the IP wherein its routed from.

Phishing is an email scam designed to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information such as account user names, passwords, credit card numbers and other information. Phishing is a method of email fraud where the perpetrator sends legitimate-looking e-mail to gather personal and financial information of the beneficiaries.

I made an alarming discovery that one can send an email to someone else using someone else's email address. Treat all email with suspicion even though it appears to be comming from the original sender.

Hi Slyrox:

You said: 1.) Do not login in a cyber cafe (Ths seems quite hard buh u nid to abide by this. This would be a good idea, but for most of us, we need to be on the go too much and we need to log into our accounts in a cyber cafe. There is a good way to circumvent any keylogger you have. And that is to use Windows' On-screen keyboard. No keylogger would be able to get your password that way and screenshots would show only dots or asterisks. Try it smiley

It was not too back that more people have dealt with any net e-mail only abandoned. Most of us consider email an essential part of life these days. But what happens when the email is malicious? Junk mail and spam have become a reality, but annoying and time consuming it can be.

this is revealing , there is indeed no silver bullet when it comes to cyber security, however that is not to say SME's should leave thier trails vulnerable as there are still some way to engage a robust security solution for small businesses in nigeria such as Worry Free Services which is quite helpful https://arravo.co/top-worry-free-business-services-in-nigeria-2022/
