Bayelsa governorship: How Presidency plotted against Sylva

•Governor under security watch •We’ll defy court order –INEC

Ahead of today’s People’s Democratic Party’s governorship primaries in Bayelsa State, Governor Timipreye Sylva has been placed under security watch, even as his movement has been restricted to the state as ordered by the Presidency. This was made known just as investigation by Saturday Mirror has shown how the Presidency plotted against Sylva. The security watch and restriction of movement have necessitated the governor to expresses deep concern over the massive deployment of police and security personnel in Yenagoa.

In a press statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary, Doifie Ola, the governor lamented that the troop deployment in the state is uncalled for and capable of endangering the people’s fundamental human rights. “Governor Sylva calls on the people of the state to refuse to be intimidated or provoked into any form of violence over the needless troop deployment. He urges all residents of the state to remain calm and go about their normal businesses, trusting in the ability of our democratic institutions to address the existing political anxiety in Bayelsa State . “The Governor says our democratic institutions have demonstrated the ability to resolve issues arising from the contest for power at all levels “Governor Sylva thanks the people of the state for their continued support, maturity and patriotism. He advises all parties in the political contest to bear in mind that what is most important now is the interest of Bayelsa State , not the ambition of any individual of group of individuals.”

However, investigation by Saturday Mirror revealed that the development in Bayelsa State was traced to efforts by the Presidency to ensure that Governor Sylva is shown the way out of the Government House at all cost. According to a document marked ‘Top Secret’ made available to Saturday Mirror, the decision to cage the governor was taken to forestall the threats of insecurity emanating from the camp of Chief Sylva should the Peoples Democratic Party go ahead to hold the primaries today as scheduled. The embattled governor on Wednesday obtained an order of the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to restrain the party from taking any action on the planned primary until it determines a motion he filed seeking to stop the primary; an order the ruling PDP has discountenanced, preparatory to holding the primaries today. But the idea to beef up security and restrict the movement around the governor was contained in the said document as part of the minutes of a Strategy Committee meeting of the Anti-Gov Sylva Movement by some prominent Bayelsans in a private residence of a top politician in Maitama, Abuja on Thursday 3rd November, 2011, which afterwards was communicated to President Goodluck Jonathan for enforcement. The meeting which was reattended by governorship aspirant, Henry Seriake Dickson and a number of political leaders from Bayelsa State also deliberated among other things about the President’s Support for the project.

In the extract of the minutes of the meeting, the chairman of the occasion, and leader who has been hosting the group reassured them that Mr. President’s support was intact; that the other aspirants were mere decoy to create the illusion of a complicated political fight as it was illadvised for Mr President to function effectively in a two-way fight without being overly exposed; and that the best form of pressure on him was further blackmail through more media disclosures and petitions on Gov Sylva’s hatred of him and boast that he would derail his 2015 re-election project if he Sylva gets re-elected in 2012. The point was also made to widen the contact on Mr. President and ensure that he gets timely explosive briefings on Gov Sylva’s antics from the group and the NSA. On the pressure on the party leadership, the group commended the leadership of the PDP for upturning the clearance given to Governor Sylva by the screening committee, and singled out the Acting National Secretary, Dr. Babayo, the Legal Adviser, Wole Oke and the National Publicity Secretary, Prof Alkali, for special thanks.

“Members expressed reservations about the apparent pro-Sylva statements credited to the Acting National Chairman, Alhaji Baraje Kawu, and said that he might be under pressure from his benefactor, former Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State, who is very close to Gov Sylva. The meeting also resolved to apply further pressure on Alhaji Baraje through Mr. President, and also to ensure that he is weaned of Saraki’s overbearing influence over him. It was further resolved that Mr. President should be reached to speak to Saraki on this matter, as any further dragging of foot by the party in disqualifying Sylva will not only send the wrong kind of signal back home, but would give the governor more time to recover and mount counter measures.”
