Should Arms Be Legalized In Nigeria? by Chiori(m): 2:22pm On Oct 09, 2007 |
Seeing the rate at which robbers and burglars are increasing terrorizing Nigerians, don't you think it is high time the National Assembly legislated to legalize the carrying of arms in Nigeria? Or do you think we are not mature enough to handle that, or that things have not got that bad in the country? |

Chiro, Coincidentally i had an experience this morning while on my way to work. Along Ikorodu, i think palmgrove area at about 7.30am. A guy came from the blues and snatched out my left ear ring and at same time tried to confused me by asking i should park. I am not easil paniced but i was so mad that i wish i had a gun on me. there was nothing i cld do cos the ear ring means nothing to me and it was not painful. So see, at that moment if i had a gun i would have shot the idiot out of anger. Certainly regreting it later cos it's not easy to live with blood in ones hand. But if it's robbery case, men it's not just owning a gun but knowing how to use it well. And trust some naija, they will misuse it. Imean people will just be killing at the slightest provocation. Imagine a scenero with a bus conductor. Really it's a big decision. I think the House should work on our security force - Police. Cheers |

@Topic Do u want Nigerians to wipe themselves off the face of the earth. The air will constantly be filled with gun-shots from provoked Nigerians killing one another + Wicked and gready ones oppressing their neighbours. As the last poster said, they need to work seriously on our police force. If You have watched the Movie 44Minuites (Based on True-life), you will see that the robbers had more sophisticated weapons than the local police. They held the town for a good while. The local police never expeted such an attack. They suffered serious loss and injury in their ranks. Since that day, the police of that town has been equipped with more serious gadgets and training. That is the case of the Nigerian police. Who wants to loose his life for a few thousands of Naira and a cheap old rusty riffle. I heard a group of them were even crying one day on patrol when a bunch of highly armed Robbers ambushed them and told them they must follow them to carry out their operation (Just a hear-say). |

Intolerant illiterates with guns? Thanks, but no thanks, please. Nonlethal arms like pepper sprays should be adequate. |

NO Lets be honest, there is a lot of frustration in the land and people are always venting their frustration on someone elsle at the slightest provocation (real or imagined). The media is rife with stories of Nigerians bathing people with acid or atacking others with matchetes, broken bottles, iron rods, etc. Adding gun to the list will only worsen the meele. Besides even in the case of robery, armed robers ussualy move in gangs and will most likely outnumber their target so the gun will not be much help. |

When nigerians who cant even see each other across the internet are ready to brawl and hate in a split second, giving them a gun is nothing but a license to kill. |

Re: Should Arms Be Legalized In Nigeria? by james007: 10:48pm On Oct 18, 2007 |
Why chase shadows when we have failed to address the real problem our people, our society has Our problem isn't what should be legalized or what should not be, but the level of illiteracy in the society. You can quote me, if legalized 95% of people who own arms will use it to terrorize their neighbors, after all abi u no know who I be, I go show you say i get gun now , Maybe u are unknowingly legalizing armed terrorism, it doesn't have to be OSAMA u know, |

, But i have to say , The idea does not seem like a bad one if there was a way of regulating it. I mean whenever I think of going back to Nigeria, I think I need to get me the best double barrel I can lay my hands on so anyone who tries to harrass me and my family will know I am not there to play games. I have nightmares when I dream of going back to Nigeria. |

It is just simple. More arms = More crimes I am neither for or against. Just know what will happen. |

Re: Should Arms Be Legalized In Nigeria? by debosky(m): 12:49am On Oct 19, 2007 |
Carrying arms is already legal in Nigeria - as long as you have the appropriate license there are many people who own private firearms, so I don't see it as such a novelty. If you're talking of more widespread availability of weapons, I would say no - like others have said, even controlled substances like poisons and acid gets used freely, guns would just be worse. Having a weapon of your own is no guarantee or enhancement of safety in general, someone who wants to maim, harm or rob will simply purchase superior weapons or attempt to catch you unawares. |

@Poster Carrying arms has been legal in America for years as long as you register the weapon legally. One time, my home was broken into, and it took me about two weeks to feel at ease. I mean when I came home and the door had been broken in, goods taken out of it, drawers opened and clothes thrown all over the place, I felt very invaded. It was like someone had actually walked easily in my house, gone through my things, and it was very unnerving to me. Like I said, it took some time to just relax again in my own house. For the first time, I actually thought about purchasing a gun and registereing it, of course, for my own protection. However, my cousins (female and male) who were brother and sister got into a confrontation one day with some notorious young guys in an apartment complex in a northern state. My female cousin ran to the car and got there first, and she pulled out her gun, which she had the legal right to carry (for it was registered legally); however, when she picked the gun up in her hand, she hesitated--just long enough to be shot in the head by one of the guys who was in pursuit of her. She was murdered, and her brother, who had gotten into the argument in the first place with these guys is still living with the guilt. When this happened, I did not purchase a gun. I am not properly trained to use one, and to tell you the truth, I had no desire to seriously learn how to use a gun. Therefore, I did not get one. Carrying a weapon is one thing. Being able to spontaneously use one in a stressful situation is another thing. My cousin's hesitation caused her her life. No one knows how they will react in a stressful and frightening situation. We can only believe we will do this or do that. But if given the choice, I would rather have access to a gun in a life threatening situation than not have one. Patricia Daboh |

Nice Topic! I don't think legalisation of arms is what we need. Considering the rate at which people react to issues in Nigeria, a simple argument in a populous football viewing centre as to which team wins the match (e.g. Chelsea vs Manchester United) is enough to wipe off hundreds of people at once! In a society where human lives have no value whatsoever after some quantity of weed you just need that to reduce our population by 50% in just one year! The police should be better equipped, I think. |

if guns were legalised, some nairalanders will shoot their computer screens in anger with the way they jump at the jugular of fellow members they have and will never see. |

My dad had what we call a double barrelled gun when we lived in nigeria. What more can they legalize. There is nothing left but AK 47's. It's a bad idea. |
Re: Should Arms Be Legalized In Nigeria? by Kobojunkie: 3:43am On Oct 19, 2007 |
keypoints: That happens to be our major problem. People are so emotional that they have somehow convinced themselves the problem is with everyone else but self . In that kind of situation, and place, I would feel better if I had a gun to defend myself with, should some goon come claiming I killed his 93 year old grandmother in her sleep just cause the lady , while he was dreaming of her, mouthed off something that sounded like my name in her last breath. |

Hell to the no! But if they really want to legalize it,i think they should make the guns very cheap and the bullet very expensive that it will take a fortune to be able to buy one. |

Re: Should Arms Be Legalized In Nigeria? by bimbliss(f): 9:52am On Oct 19, 2007 |
it is no longer a question of legalization, you just need a license to have a gun now but the question is: is it worth it and how does that improve the safety of lives and properties or increase the level of security? we are too lawless in thir country to handle each nogerian having access to a gun. all the big men will suffer it the most sha cos all the area biys beefing them and their political opponents will nit want ti see them have a life, then the country will be in chaos the govt should work in improving the security agents and make them sophisticated enough to handle security matters effectively |
