Politics / Amnesty Office To Pay Ex-militants Directly by NigerianLord: 8:11pm On Jan 08, 2016 |
The Federal Government has said it will pay all ex-militants their monthly stipends directly, thus bypassing leaders who hitherto paid their boys after collecting bulk money from the Amnesty Office. Chief of Staff in the office of the Special Adviser to the President and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Colonel Dedis Abel (retd), who spoke on the development, yesterday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, said that discoveries showed that some of the ex-agitators got as low as N20,000 monthly from their commanders instead of the N65,000 they were entitled to. He said that he was in the state to make direct payments covering the months of October to December 2015, owed the ex-agitators. He said: “The Amnesty Office took the decision to pay the ex-agitators directly following reports of complicity and short-changing of some of them by their leaders. Reports revealed that some of the ex-agitators were paid as low as N20,000 out of the N65,000 which does not conform with the mandate of the Presidential Amnesty Programme." The state Police Commissioner, Mr Muhammad Katsina, made this known while briefing newsmen on Tuesday in Kano. He said that the suspects were apprehended by the police on patrol while driving at what he described as ‘killer speed’ which led to the death of two persons on the road. “The suspects were arrested for failure to obtain Police permission before embarking on the race.'' He said that as soon as investigation was completed, the suspects would be charged to court for proper prosecution. According to him, it is unlawful for anyone to block the road with no justifiable reasons. “They flagrantly violated the law for illegally racing at the wee hours of the night which will not be tolerated.” He said those arrested included five children of the Turakin Kano and District Head of Dala, Alhaji Lamido Bayero, that of the pioneer governor of Katsina State, Gen. Abdullahi Sarki Mukhtar (retd) as well as children of Prof. Danjuma Maiwada, a senior lecturer with Bayero University, Kano. The 29-year-old goalkeeper died few hours into the New Year, giving up the ghost after a long battle to keep his life. Agwu who was also former Kaduna United goalkeeper is the second player to have died in less than five days after the death of former Nasarawa United captain, Baba Idris. Late Agwu was a great penalty kick stopper as second choice goalkeeper, when Kaduna United upset Enyimba in a penalty shootout to win the Federation Cup in 2010, which later earned him a call-up to the Super Eagles same year. Niger has agreed to transfer hundreds of prisoners from the militant Islamist group Boko Haram back to their home country of Nigeria to reduce pressure on its crammed prisons, judicial sources said on Tuesday. Boko Haram militants insurgency within Niger’s southern region of Diffa in recent months, carrying out dozens of attacks has led to the declared state of emergency in an effort to improve security and has made hundreds of arrests. “Nigeria sent a working group here (to Niger) last week and the two sides have established an initial list of 500 detainees who will soon be transferred to Nigeria,” said a magistrate working on the case who asked not to be named. He did not give the exact timing of the transfer or say how the potentially dangerous prisoners would be transported. The prisoners are currently being held in the detention centres of Kollo, Diffa and Koutoukale, all of which are overpopulated due to arrests of Boko Haram militants, a justice ministry source said.
