Most productivity advice assumes the problem is willpower. It usually isn't. The real friction is that small tasks pile up in the background of the mind, and each one takes up a little attention even when it's not being worked on. The two-minute rule is simple: if a task takes less than two minutes, do it the moment it comes up instead of adding it to a list. Reply to the email now. Put the dish away now. File the receipt now. This works because a list is only useful for things that need planning or a block of time. Anything smaller than that doesn't need a system — it needs to just be finished. Once it's off the list, it stops costing attention. The rule breaks down if applied too literally. Some two-minute tasks are the first step of something bigger, and doing them in isolation can create a false sense of progress. The fix is to ask whether the task is genuinely complete in two minutes, or just the visible part of a longer one. Used carefully, it's less a productivity hack than a filter — a quick way to clear out the small stuff so the list that's left is the list that actually matters. |
