A member of the House of Representatives has disclosed the total sum of money lawmakers of the House receives monthly. The Rep member, Simon Karu, represents Kaltungo/Shongom federal constituency of Gombe state. During an occasion, he clearly stated that the sum of 9.3 million Naira is received in total as salary and running costs by lawmakers in the green chamber.

The lawmaker earlier stated that the basic salary of the house of representative members is N800,000, while their office running cost is N8.5 million, bringing their total received income to N9.3m.

Hon. Simon made this disclosure during the Fix Nigeria at 60 programme held in Abuja, he spoke on the topic: “Sustainable and efficient democracy: Issues on accountability and transparency in governance.”

He said,
The official salary of a member, House of Representatives which I also receive monthly is N800,000. I told you I was going to say it, why don’t you wait for me to say it? The office running cost of a member of the House of Representatives is N8.5 million. Those of you who know, know that I said exactly what it is. The problem is what the constituents demand and when when you don’t meet, they begin to call you names. Just before I walked to the stage, I received three e-mails from my constituents demanding for money and demanding for jobs. When you don’t, it becomes an issue,” he added.

Following his disclosure of lawmakers earnings, the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Treaties, Protocols and Agreement, Hon Ossai Nicholas Ossai, told the crowd to disregard the figures mentioned by his colleague. Hon Karu. Ossai told the crowd that he has never received such salary since he joined the National Assembly.

Equally at the event was Senator Dino Melaye. Dino also lent his voice saying: “With the insincerity of the National Assembly and the deception of the executive, we need a national budget regulatory office.”
