EducationWhy Students Fail Exams by Nkepris(op):
CAUSES OF MASS FAILURE IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES.

Student's failure has become a usual thing in our institutions. There is no longer shame in failure. Some students no longer care to ask themselves why they fail. Lecturers too dont care to ask themselves why their students fail. Even after suffering to deliver their lectures and students fail they dont feel remorseful. Though failure is inevitable. This is not right, they should be unhappy when students fail, students too should be unhappy, we must all be unhappy. But being unhappy wouldnt solve the problem of failure in our acedemic institutions. In other to solve a problem i think its best to recognise what the problem is. Lecturers blame it on students for not studying hard but this is not our problem. Students blame lecturers for failing them but i dont think that is the general problem though it might constitute in a little way. In my opinion i think that the bulk of the cause of our problem lies in the system. Though students and lecturers constitute in one way or the other.

In my own point of view, i think the cause of our problem can be studied under 3 main factors. Which are:

1. The school system
2. The lecturers
3. The students

THE SCHOOL SYSTEM

The problems manifested in the other factors are as a result of the system. This comprises of the school timetable and workload, the continous assesment, the school environment.

The school timetable is the major factor of failure in our Nigerian universities. The school autorities may some things not minding the workload, fix exams after only 2-3 months of study. How do they expect students to attend lectures and at the same time cover there course outline within such a short period. This also cause problems for the lecturers who because of shortage of time rush students. Some might not even cover half of the course outline and at the end they end up setting what they didnt teach. Some might ask the students to read up. I like to describe studying in Nigeria as "self studying" because students have to do most of the work themselves. I dont think a Nigerian student who rely on the school system can make good grades.

Another is continuous assesment. Some schools like the one i know well, dont give enough C A to students. I believe C A can help to boost the total grade of a student. If the marks are divided properly the students will have more chances of scoring high. They make exams all over 100. Some might ask only 2 questions for hundred marks. You donot expect a student to write as much thing that can give him/her a good grade under limited time frame.

Another vital factor is the school environment( Inadequate classrooms) You see a school where students stand , some might be outside to receive lectures, some might sit on blocks, some might fight themselves in order to get space. When i was in ist year i remember students carry blocks which the builders rejected into the classroom. They place them at the front of the classroom and arrange them well for them to sit at the front and be able to hear the lectures. How do you expect students to learn in such condition?

Lack of facilities also pose as a major factor. You can see a situation whereby a lecture would be teaching about a thousand students without a public address system. I see no reason why a big institution like a university wouldnt be able to provide ordinary public address system. Yet students pay for all this. Once i heard a lecture advicing students to contribute money in other to buy a public adress system. I asked myself what happens to the tuition fee we pay? What are they used for? If after paying we still have to contribute and buy equipments for ourselves, then why do we pay at all?
Also i think the school should device a strategy for dividing the work load per semester. I am sure something can be done.

THE LECTURERS

Some lecturers can be sadist. They deliberately fail students or give them low grades.
Most cause of failure by the student from the part of the lecturers is lack of knowledge of the course he/she is teaching. Because he doesnt understand the course his student wouldnt understand it either, and this might have resulted because the lecturer that taught the lecturer didnt know it as well. That lack of knowledge continues through different generations. Because a lecturer doesnt understand a course, he comes to class, dictates his note and leaves. The student goes back home crams the note, during exams the student might remember only 50% of what he/she crammed. This is wrong.

Also lecture schedule cause problems too. Some lecturers fix lectures at very inconvient hour for instance, by 6pm in the evening. Some lecturers instead of the normal 2 hours a lecture might require they lecture for 6 hours. How does he expect students to assimilliate all that at once. Some times this might not be the lecturers fault, it might be as a result of the system which gave him limited time.

Some lecturers might be so lazy to come to class. They would miss their classes until exam period is so close. They would come to class and give out a lot of notes and handouts. Meanwhile this should have been the time for the students to revise but they are not revising they are just starting to read. In Nigeria most students start to read only close to exam period. This is sometimes not their fault.

THE STUDENTS

In as much as the system and the lecturers contribute greatly to the failure of student i think a lot of students contribute to their own failure. Students should recognise the system and fine a way to adjust. They must adjust afterall non livings this like chemicals adjust to changes in the system (le' chatelier's principle). Most students spend their time blaming the system instead of adjusting.

Most students forget their aim of coming to school. They spend their time seeking for what i like to call vanity. I was once pushed by a girl to do what doesnt interest me. When i asked her why she keeps pushing me she replied,'so you would be famous'. It was kinda funny cause i just couldnt waste my time doing what doesnt intetest me just so i would be famous. If i wanted fame i know how and when to get it not in this kind of place and situation because after 5 years you are out of school and everyone forgets you were once miss your department or whatever post. Yes it will be on record but no one actually thinks about all this things once you are out of school. Its all just temporal. Why waste your time fighting for temporal things instead of fighting for what would determine your future. Some say it gives you connections for obtaining a job but i dont think we should make it our priority. Human beings dissapoint. No one should ever hope on anyone to determine his/her future.

Most spend their time seeking for fame. Some might start making a lot of friends, visiting a lot of people in other to gain votes when they are contesting for a post in SUG. The funny part is that most of them dont even know how to gain the votes. Like last week i was approached by two guys, they appeared friendly at ist and i thought they just wanted to talk to me. But they destroyed every chance of them getting a vote from me when at last they said they will be contesting for a post. I was like so this is why they wanted to talk to me in the ist place. I was like forget it dude you are not getting a vote from me. People i know that under normal circumstance dont act friendly.

In conclusion, i think every factor should recognise their problems and solve them. We should STOP blaming each other. Lecturers should stop blaming students, students should stop blaming lecturers. The school system has to be adjusted to suit both lecturers and students. Students should also try and adjust.
