SportsBREAKING: Cristiano Ronaldo Accused Of $16.5m Tax Fraud In Spain by nlceo(op): 1:26pm On Jun 13, 2017
Spain’s prosecutor’s office in Madrid has filed a lawsuit against footballer Cristiano Ronaldo for allegedly defrauding Spanish authorities of €14.7m ($16.5m) in unpaid taxes between 2011 and 2014.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the prosecutor’s office said Ronaldo had knowingly used a “business structure” created in 2010 to hide his income in Spain from his image rights.

The lawsuit is based on a report sent to the prosecutor’s office from Spain’s tax agency AEAT, it said, adding that the Portugal forward used what it deems a shell company in the Virgin Islands to “create a screen in order to hide his total income from Spain’s Tax Office”.

Messi jail sentence: Footballer convicted over tax fraud
Ronaldo is the world’s highest paid athlete, according to Forbes magazine.

The prosecutor also said that Ronaldo “intentionally” did not declare income of €28.4m ($31.8m) made from the cession of image rights from 2015-20 to another company located in Spain.

Additionally, the prosecutor accused Ronaldo of declaring €11.5m ($12.8m) earned from 2011-14 in a tax return filed in 2014, when the prosecutor said Ronaldo’s real income during that period was almost €43m ($48m).

It added that Ronaldo falsely claimed the income as coming from real estate, which “greatly” reduced his tax rate.

Ronaldo’s agency had previously said he was up to date on his taxes.

Last month, tax officials said Ronaldo adjusted his tax declarations and paid an extra €6m ($6.7m) in 2014.

A four-time Ballon d’Or winner, the 32-year-old Ronaldo has led Real Madrid to back-to-back Champions League titles and its first Spanish league in five seasons, and helped Portugal to win last year’s European Championship.

Ronaldo is the latest high-profile footballer to run afoul of Spain’s tax man.

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi was convicted of tax fraud for unpaid income from image rights last year, but he is not expected to serve prison time since it was his first offence.

Barcelona’s Argentine defender Javier Mascherano also agreed a one-year suspended sentence with authorities for tax fraud last year.

PoliticsAPDA WELCOMES NIGERIANS by nlceo(op): 8:29pm On Jun 07, 2017
The Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA) welcomes with delight the registration of five new political parties , one of which is the APDA, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). By this action, the commission is fulfilling one of its statutory obligations-that of registration of political associations seeking registration as political parties. Beyond that, the registration of the new parties will broaden the political space and give Nigerians more latitude to choose among political parties. We thank the commission for living up to its constitutional mandate and urge it to do more in our collective quest to enthrone a viable and enduring political culture.

It is worthy of note that the registration of APDA or any other political party for that matter did not come easy. It is the outcome of a rigorous selection exercise. We at APDA congratulate ourselves for meeting the requirements for registration as a political party within the shortest possible  time ever. It is on record that our application succeeded even before those of others who applied before us. Our early success in this regard is, no doubt, a product of our diligence and hard work as well as the impartial and fair disposition of the electoral body.

We wish to state here again that APDA is the true party of the Nigerian people. We are determined to redefine partisan politics and political administration in the country. We have  a social contract with Nigerians and this is driven by a deliberate , conscious and patriotic conviction that the time has come for us to institute a national political platform that will accommodate all of us as we strive to meet our individual and collective dreams and aspirations.

We say this in recognition of the fact that APDA as a political movement arose out of the despondency in the land. Nigeria as a country is saddled with an inactive and inept behemoth masquerading as a ruling party . It is an indisputable fact that the government of the day has failed the people. Hunger and poverty are  ravaging the land and there is no hope for a better tomorrow under the present order. Much more regrettable is the fact that there is no viable opposition in the land to put the failing government on its  toes. A situation like this calls for redress and APDA is offering itself to undertake this rescue mission. To achieve our broad goals and objectives, we have put together a holistic manifesto which will be the basis of our social contract with the Nigerian people.

We wish to assure Nigerians that APDA will introduce values that are premised on an inclusive Nigerian society that is founded on the principles of freedom, equality, solidarity and fairness. All we ask of you is to trust and believe in us. Together, we can make Nigeria the country of our dream. As we say in APDA, we are truly stronger together.

PoliticsAD Accuses APDA Of Stealing Its Logo, Asks INEC Not To Register It. by nlceo(op): 7:32am On Jun 06, 2017
AD Accuses APDA Of Stealing Its Logo, Asks INEC Not To Register It.

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) has kicked against the registration of the newly launched Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA) in Abuja, on Monday, urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to register it, saying the logo of APDA belonged to AD.

According to the party, “We write to protest and strongly oppose the use of the logo launched today (Monday) in Abuja by a new association known as Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA) looking for INEC registration to become political party. Alliance for Democracy (AD) is not against your coming but we are strongly against you to snatch 95 per cent of our existing logo which has been in use from 1998 to date.”

In a signed statement by one of the National Working Committee (NWC) members, Ismail Ayodele, a copy of which was made available to Media Houses in Abuja, AD said it has already called the attention of INEC to the association and the need not to register it as a political party.

Ayodele, who is also the National Auditor of the party, said in the statement that “they should leave AD alone.”

PoliticsGovernor Obaseki Appoints 192 Special Assistants In Edo State by nlceo(op): 11:26pm On Jun 02, 2017
Not minding the economic recession ,Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Friday, announced the appointment of 192 Special Assistants, a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie (Esq.) contained.

The appointees, which represent a true reflection of all the 192 electoral wards in the three Senatorial Districts that make up the state, make history as being products of inclusive and participatory governance in Edo state. Those appointed from each LG therefore represent the number of wards in such local governments.

It would be recalled that Governor Obaseki already instructed people seeking appointments in the state to go to their wards where they will be screened and represent a democratic decision and choice by people at the grassroots.

Meanwhile, it was also revealed that these special assistants would assist the government at the wards where offices would be set up with adequate communication facilities to enable them channel information to the government speedily.

The Special Assistants were also mandated to be the eyes, ears and, where necessary, mouthpiece of the government at their various wards and were tasked with the duty of ensuring that every citizen of Edo State had a say in the administration of the state under Governor Obaseki’s principle of inclusive governance.

Foreign Affairspresident Trump Fires FBI Director James Comey by nlceo(op): 7:59am On May 10, 2017
President Trump on Tuesday fired FBI Director James Comey, abruptly ending a rocky year-long stretch for the top law enforcement officer who came under fire for his handling of the Clinton email probe — and whose agency has been investigating whether Trump’s campaign had ties to Russia.
“The FBI is one of our nation’s most cherished and respected institutions, and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement,” Trump said.
The president told Comey in a brief letter that he could not “effectively lead” the bureau and called for “new leadership that restores public trust and confidence” in law enforcement.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said the president’s decision was based on “the clear recommendations” of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
A search for a new permanent FBI director will begin immediately.

BusinessIfeanyi Ubah Sues DSS, Seeks Release From Detention by nlceo(op): 3:35pm On May 09, 2017
The Managing Director of Capital Oil and Gas Limited, Ifeanyi Ubah, has sued the Department of State Services before the Federal High Court in Lagos over what he termed unlawful detention by the security agency.

Ubah’s lawyer, Mrs. Ifeoma Esom, who appeared before Justice Mohammed Idris on Tuesday with an ex parte application, claimed that her client had been in detention since May 6.

She urged the judge to order the DSS to release Ubah to prevent the security agency from coercing him to accede to “whatever conditions they impose on him in exchange for his freedom.”

Upon hearing the ex parte application on Tuesday, Justice Idris ordered the DSS to bring Ubah before him on May 12, 2017, to show cause why the businessman should not be released unconditionally.

In an affidavit filed in support of the application, the Secretary of Capital Oil and Gas Limited,George Oranuba, claimed that the DSS arrested his boss on account of allegations levelled against him by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria.

According to Oranuba, the issue had become a subject of litigation and was already before the court.

Oranuba, however, said despite the subsisting suit, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the DSS still invited Ubah for questioning.

According to him, Ubah had earlier been detained from March 24 to April 14, 2017.

The DSS had claimed that it arrested and detained Ubah for what it termed an act of “economic sabotage” involving an alleged diversion of petroleum products worth about N11bn.

The DSS claimed that the said petroleum products, belonging to NNPC Retail, stored in the Capital Oil farm in Lagos, went missing under controversial circumstances.

However, the company secretary, Oranuba, said the agreement leading to the keeping of the petroleum product with Capital Oil, allowed “conversion and diversion of IT products by operators as long as the operator is prepared to re-deliver the products within seven days of demand by the owner of the product or to pay a penalty for non-re-delivery.”

According to him, failure to re-deliver did not amount to a crime but is a mere breach of contract, which can be remedied by payment of a penalty to the owner.

“The agreement expressly states that any penalty due for non-re-delivery is to be treated as a debt and I verily believe that law enforcement agencies are not allowed to operate as debt collectors,” he said.

Oranuba claimed that NNPC is indebted to Capital Oil and Gas Limited in “excess of N13bn yet the company did not call law enforcement agencies to collect the debt, despite the length of time NNPC has held on to the money.”

Nigerians have taken to social media to blast the daughter of President Buhari, Zarha Buhari and her Husband for using the Presidential Jet at the expense of tax payers.

The picture which was posted by Zarah’s husband (Ahmed) in one of his social media networks has however received mixed reactions from Nigerians with many of them stating that such flamboyant lifestyle should not be tolerated especially at a time like this that the country is still battling to come out of recession coupled with the fact that most Nigerian workers are yet to be paid their salaries.

PoliticsPresidency In Shock As National Assembly Is Set To Invoke Constitution Against B by nlceo(op): 10:01am On May 08, 2017
Presidency in shock as National Assembly is set to invoke Constitution against Buhari.

– Some federal lawmakers are reportedly working to use the constitution to get President Buhari to reveal his health status

– The lawmakers, mainly of the opposition PDP, say the secrecy surrounding Buhari’s health is “unsatisfactory and falls short of global practices.”

– The PDP lawmakers are expected to move this week either on floor of the Senate of the House of Representatives

Emerging reports say that some federal lawmakers in the National Assembly have begun moves to invoke the constitution to force President Muhammadu Buhari to reveal his health status.

The lawmakers may try to call for the invocation of section 144 (1) of the 1999 Constitution in the bid to get President Buhari’s health status revealed.

The move is actively supported by members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to the report, efforts to invoke the said section reached its peak last week when an attempt was made by chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts Kingsley Chinda to present the move under matters of urgent importance on the floor of the House of Representatives.

The move was however blocked by Speaker Yakubu Dogara on the grounds that issue was weighty and had grave political implications.

FamilyThe Voluntary Making Of A Single Mother : Right Or Wrong? by nlceo(op): 7:52pm On May 07, 2017
One of our followers shared her story with us and granted us the permission to publish it.

The voluntary making of a single mother.

After dating a few men in my youth, I really came to value my independence and generally a hussle free life. I enjoyed doing what I want, when I want and with who I want without owing anyone an explanation.

I however also wanted a child to give me purpose and fulfillment.

Luckily I had the means to do exactly that and my only dilemma was a sperm donor.

Now I had a boyfriend who to me seemed to fit the bill. He had in my opinion the appropriate genetic make for my future offspring. He had a gorgeous body, was very handsome, and had brains to match.

He also had a lovely personality and would have liked to marry me. If I had to marry, I would have chosen him. However I knew I wouldn’t have been happy and would have visited misery on him had we married.

So after much thought I set about my plan.

So I went about acting on my plan. I took a few months just to be very sure. It was afterall the biggest decision of my life.

I stopped using contraception and got pregnant. I immediately informed the father and he thought that it was obvious that we would marry.

I set him straight and told him no such thing would happen. He was devastated. I offered to let him be a part of the child’s life and he jumped at the chance. He provides materially and also has a great relationship with his son who is now a grown up. I was well able to provide for him on my own but I let him participate. He is now married and has other children.

My son has the best of both worlds in my opinion. There are positive male role models in his life, my dad, brothers and his own father.

For me life has been great. I have had a few long term relationships without the burden of commitment and never compromising my relationship with my son.

I still do what I want when I want and I don’t apologize.
Ps. Open to all kinds of feedback.

EducationTop Tips For Better Writing. by nlceo(op): 3:07pm On May 07, 2017
There are many different types of writing: essays, reports, letters, speeches, work emails. Whatever your reason for putting words on the page, and whatever your style, there are some universal tips that will help you tailor your message and improve your writing:

1. Be clear about your purpose.

The most basic question to ask yourself before you start is why you are writing.
In an academic essay or assignment, your purpose is to convey information and facts and draw conclusions. But if you are writing a business report, you may want to make recommendations for specific actions. In a letter of complaint you will be looking for a specific result, such as a refund.
Keep your purpose in mind at all times to avoid going off topic. Even better: write it down in as few words as possible, print it out, and keep it next to you as you write.

2. Choose the appropriate style.

In conversation, we instinctively adapt what we say and how we say it to suit the people we are talking to. We talk to our manager or lecturer in one way, to friends in another, and so on. For good writing it is essential to do the same: choose a writing style and words that the people for whom you are writing will feel comfortable with and react well to. Academic writing has one style, business writing another, blog writing another.

3. Start with a plan.

Far too often people write without a plan. The result is often disjointed writing, with parts that don’t connect, no clear way in, and no obvious way out. Whether you are writing a 10,000-word report or a letter of complaint, creating a clear plan and structure is the crucial first step to getting your message across quickly and in the most effective way. Mindmapping, or organizing information visually with diagrams, can be a useful tool.

4. Write for readers, not yourself.

Your aim in writing is to communicate ideas and information to other people, and you must keep that in mind with every word and sentence you write. Constantly ask yourself who each item of information is really for.
Because you have a clear idea about what and why you are writing, it is easy to get carried away and include information that is important to you only—and nobody else. If you write it you could well be wasting your time and other people’s.

5. Guide readers through what you write.

Your task is to help readers understand your message quickly and precisely. To do this, it is necessary to show them clearly how the different parts relate to each other.
Each sentence, each paragraph should be relevant to what comes before and what comes after. You should use words and phrases that connect or contrast to show these connections, for example, as a result, in this way, in contrast. Informative headings also help readers follow your train of thought, so don’t be afraid to use them.

6. Use passive verbs appropriately.

In certain types of writing, such as scientific contexts, passive verbs are appropriate and widely used. But in more general writing people often use them inappropriately, or overuse them.
The problem is that they can make writing sound impersonal when it needs to be personal because they highlight the action rather than the person performing it. But very often who is performing the action is a crucial part of the message. It is important to understand when the passive is useful and when it is not.

PoliticsGov. Willie Obiano Is A Failure - Andy Ubah by nlceo(op): 7:59am On May 07, 2017
The Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District, Andy Uba, yesterday, boasted that he would win the November 18 governorship election to be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Uba said the failure of the sitting governor of the state, Willy Obiano, to meet the expectations of Anambra citizens would make his victory necessary, given his antecedent in his senatorial district in particular and the state in general.

To this end, he appealed to the people of the state to put an end to the hardship they were going through now, saying Anambra would return to its known glory when he takes over after his victory.

The senator, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to All Progressives Congress, APC, spoke yesterday, when a group of women, under the aegis of South East Professional Women Association of Nigeria and the Diaspora, SEPWAND, visited him at the national assembly, in Abuja.

During the visit, the group conferred award of “Dike Igbo” on the senator, saying the development was a mark of appreciation for his contributions in the zone.

Earlier, President of SEPWAND, Mrs Nwanganga Ibeh, said the group was moved by Ubah’s humanitarian efforts towards empowerment and protection of women in the state in particular and Nigeria in general .

She said:”Thus, in recognition of the impact you have made towards the wellbeing of the people from the South East over the years especially women and children, SEPWAND deemed it fit to honour you as “DIKE IGBO” as a mark of appreciation for your contributions in the zone.”
