Business / Are Retrenchment Winds Being Held Off By The Elections? by nnaodim: 8:39pm On Mar 21, 2015
Nigeria is facing multiple woes.

Just yesterday, Standard and Poor's, S&P, downgraded Nigeria citing multiple risk averse signals like the war against Boko Haram, falling oil prices, forthcoming uncertainty surrounding the elections.

Furthermore, we are surely going to experience a sharp drop in income.

How sharp will it be, only the future will tell.

All this points to the fact that mass retrenchment of workers is on the horizon.

This will probably be the year of retrenchments.

Health / Breastfeeding Is Now Associated To Adult Success by nnaodim: 8:31pm On Mar 21, 2015
For several years, breastfeeding was associated with high educational achievement and childhood success in school and with peers.

That research is indisputable.

Now, new research from Pelotas, Brazil, shows that the longer a mother breastfeeds her child, the better that child can succeed as an adult even till his or her thirties.

The advantages involve even being more wealthy.

Please, read the complete story here:

Breastfeeding can increase your income even at age 30.

Crime / Mob Cuts Off Woman's breast For Alleged Crime by nnaodim: 9:14am On Mar 16, 2015
I saw this online over the weekend.

It is not true of Nigerians, but we can't lie to ourselves. We are still living in the backwaters.

This is unreal. It really happened.

A mob cuts off a woman's left breast for a crime and she walks away without feeling a thing about it.

Phones / How Low Can One Go With Buying A Tablet? by nnaodim: 9:36pm On Feb 10, 2015
When I walk on the streets of Lagos, I see people selling tablets and smartphones on the streets. Many persons say they are chinko; some say they are stolen.
Is it advisable to buy such phones? Does anyone have an experience of something ugly happening after buying such cheap phosnes? Can one find them in Ikeja, the computer village?
Thankx

Education / Advice: NGO Or Foundation To Chose by nnaodim: 9:03pm On Jan 22, 2015
My School, A junior secondary school, intends inviting an NGO or foundation to talk to the students on "the benefits of giving back to the community". We, the teachers, are at a loss on which NGO to invite that would best represent that theme.
Can anyone suggest one, especially something that would really give the students a good boost in self-esteem and self-confidence?

Business / Tax Evasion: Double Edged Sword by nnaodim: 9:50pm On Nov 06, 2014
I just wrote a piece on tax evasion.
http://incomeready..com/2014/11/cheating-on-taxes-might-not-be-that-bad.html#.VFvZdqOHfKk
Sometimes, policy makers hate them. They take the government money away.
Sometimes, policy makers allow them to have their way. They can bring in investments.
It's like a double-edged sword.

Business / FDI Or Portfolio Investment by nnaodim: 3:29am On Nov 03, 2014
Most times when politicians make statements in the newspapers about investments, they mean portfolio investments and not FDI. Sometimes, when they mean FDI the newspapers report portfolio investment.
Both are not the same and both have different consequences.
foreign direct investment, FDI: Investment by foreigners in your country with the aim of actively participating in the daily operational details of the business. They mostly bring in their personnel to man key positions and send incomes abroad often - sometimes to solve international tax problems.
Portfolio investment: Investment by foreigners in your country just for the sake of making profits through corporate bonds, shares etc. These investors are passive and are only concerned about the bottom line.
Understanding what Multinationals want before they make an FDI investment is important.
http://incomeready..com/2014/11/profits-and-economic-growth-for.html
Multinational companies like Nokia, LG, Samsung who have offices and factories in Nigeria are FDI. An investor from abroad who buys Nigerian and Corporate Bonds is investing in Portfolio. Which is better for Nigeria? That is the question our policy makers shy away from.

Politics / How Not To Fight Corruption - Russia As A Case Study by nnaodim: 10:33pm On Sep 20, 2014
This is how not to fight corruption:
1. Creating so much regulatory agencies and parastatals that duplicate tasks in order to protect the weak and vulnerable.
2. Weakening the Rule of Law to satisfy your lust for private gain.
3. Violating property rights such as copyright.
4. Protecting the predator rather than the prey. EFCC please mark this one.
5. Promoting competition in business and reducing monopolies.
This and many more are ways not to fight corruption. We can learn from the Russian experience.

Each time you see another activist purporting to fight for your rights, please read this blog post and wonder if he is really double-speaking.
Education / The Longer You Fail Jamb, You Longer You Forget What You Learned In School by nnaodim: 1:52pm On Sep 20, 2014
It is true. A new report reveals that the longer you stay at home after secondary school, the more of what you learned at secondary school you will forget.
Maybe that is why evening and private lessons are making a killing.
You can read it all here:

One fact is clear though: as a fresher in university, you have to remove your jambito outlook and look at the world with new specs.

Investment / Risk And Uncertainty Attitudes by nnaodim: 6:21am On Sep 19, 2014
Risk, the fear that an outcome will not work out as projected due to factors between the start and the end, breeds investments, while uncertainty, the fear of an unknown outcome, is the brainchild of insurance.
Commonsense suggests that we all have a basic attitude and reaction to risks and uncertainty. But is that really true?
This blog piece suggests yes, a basic thread could exist in all of us, whether Africans, Europeans, Americans or Asians.
http://incomeready..com/2014/09/quite-likely-humans-show-equivalent.html#.VBu7yaP4IsE
According to the study, Nigerians are prone to taking risk more than the average and less prone to forestall future eventualities through insurance.
