President Bans Pentecostal Churches in Cameroon Cameroon's President Paul Biya has ordered the closure of nearly 100 Christian churches in key cities. Yaounde, Cameroon (CNN) -- Cameroon's President Paul Biya has ordered the closure ofnearly 100 Christian churches in key cities, citing criminal practices organized by Pentecostal pastors that threaten the security of the West African nation. But Pentecostal pastors said the move is evidence of Biya's insecurity about the churches' criticism of the government. Biya is using the military to permanently shut down all Pentecostal church denominations in the nation's capital, Yaounde, and the North West Regional capital, Bamenda, which have the largest Christian populations in Cameroon. More than 50 churches have now been closed, with the government targeting nearly 100 in eight other regions. "We will get rid of all the so-called Christian Pentecostal pastors who misuse the name of Jesus Christ to fake miracles and kill citizens in their churches. They have outstretched their liberty," Mbu Anthony Lang, a government official in Bamenda, told CNN Wednesday. Nearly 500 Pentecostal churches operate in Cameroon, but fewer than 50 are legal, he added. On Sunday, a 9-year-old Christian girl collapsed and died during a prayer session inWinners' Chapel, a Pentecostal church in Bamenda. The girl's mother, Mih Theresa, toldCNN Wednesday that the pastor intended to cast out the numerous demons that were in control of her daughter's life. "I want the government to stop these pastorswho use mysterious powers to pull Christiansand kill then for more powers. All my children have ran away from the Catholic Church in search for miracles, signs and wonders," she told CNN while holding back tears. Another Christian, Mveng Thomas, said his marriage ended abruptly when a Pentecostal pastor ordered his wife to dissolve their union. He said the pastor described him as"an unrepentant devil." Pastors marched against the government's decision Wednesday in Bamenda and Douala. Pastors said the Biya government sees the mass proliferation of churches as a threat. Boniface Tum, a bishop of the Christian Church of God in Yaounde, said that Biya, who has been president since 1982, is becoming insecure about the freedom of speech within these churches. "Authorizing only the Catholic, Presbyterian, Baptist, Muslim, and a few other churches, is a strict violation of the right to religion," Tum added. Targeted Pentecostal Christians in Bamenda are transforming their private homes into churches. North West Regional governor Adolphe Lele L'Afrique said Wednesday that police had discovered the abduction of 30 children under age 18 by a pastor in Bamenda. The pastor said he wanted to remove the childrenfrom a bad society, Lele added. Government officials also say that some pastors convince congregants that they do not need professional medical treatment for their ailments. "How can a pastor say the sick needs no medical doctor? We need sanity in our Christian lives," Nyang Blaise, a youth leader for Biya's ruling party, CPDM, told CNN. One woman said her mother was refusing cancer treatments because of her pastor. "My mother's condition is worsening after doctors confirmed she had cancer. She is dying silently, and yet we cannot persuade her to see a doctor for proper treatment, against her pastor's wish," Deborah Tanyi said |

hardbody: Its been years in the law school when my then lecturer taught us that some of what you need to assess is the possibility of enforcing a judgement before you institute an action in court. Keyamo understands what i am talking about. At most you will brand it executive recklessness or lawlessness but what will you do if the C-in-C chooses not to hear or comply with the courts decision? It is for the same reason that it is silly to sue an agbero with no permanent place of residence. (and i am not comparing both oo)am with u my brother. |
WildChild00: Kudos to the judiciary for a work well-done, right from 1999 when Formal president Obasanjo came into power, dis has been in practised, but on the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria, it is clearly spelt out that the president should norminate and send to the senate for approval, but most of the civilian president has been negecting this for so long, perhaps reasons best known to them.even the so called judge dat made the pronouncement is nervous, let alone GEJ dat will implement it. At this era, political office holders treat the military with fear and respect, so as to avoid wat happened in the past @coup. By the way, do u think Ihejirika and co. can be removed frm office against their wish? if yes, who will force them out of power? |

If that child falls down from an okada or gets robbed in a bus, then you start praying.i will not buy a car for an irresponsible child |

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, President Goodluck Jonathan will, any moment from now, overhaul the service chiefs, even as the chief of defence staff (CDS), Admiral Ola Ibrahim, has askedfor voluntary retirement from the service, LEADERSHIP can authoritatively report. Ibrahim, who is from Kwara State, replaced retired Air ChiefMarshal Oluseyi Petinrin. Until his appointment, Ibrahim was the chief of naval staff (CNS). He was appointed to the officeon October 3, 2012, when the president named Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba, from Delta State, as the new CNS. Until his elevation, Ezeoba wasthe chief of administration at the Defence Headquarters. Jonathan also named Air Marshall Alex Badeh from Adamawa State as the new chief of air staff. Badeh was, until his new appointment, theair officer commanding, Training Command, Kaduna. But, Jonathan retained the incumbent chief of army staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika from Abia State. According to a reliable source from the State House, Admiral Ibrahim had met with the president and the commander-in-chief and sought permission to voluntarily retire after a meritorious service that has brought him to the peak of the military. He later formalisedthe request and “President Jonathan has accepted his reasons but, I am sorry, I don’thave the details of his reasons for doing so”. The source further disclosed that no sooner had it become known that the CDS was goingthan lobby and scheming for his successor began. “There are forces seriously lobbying for the remaining service chiefs: Lt. Gen. Ihejirika, who isthe most senior; Air Marshal Badeh of the Air Force and Vice Admiral Ezeoba of the Navy.” He explained that while those lobbying for Ihejirika might bethinking he would get it on the platter of gold saying, “they might likely miss it except they move faster. This is because those that are lobbying for Ezeoba seem to be far ahead and those who are working for Badeh too arecapitalising on rotation of the CDS; their own point is ‘it is theturn of Air Force’.” If Ihejirika secured the slot, which he had missed by a whisker last year when he was asked to retain the COAS job, it means it is only his successor that would be named by the president but “IfEzeoba was named the new CDS, then, Ihejirika may be asked to go in order not to be serving under the CDS who is of lower rank. The whole scenario would be unfolded within the next few days,” he said. The source also disclosed that some forces from the north have begun plotting how the successor of Ihejirika would be one of their cronies. When some of officers that were eyeing the post were retired recently, hell was literally let loose as a section of the mediabegan a war against Ihejirika, accusing him of paving the way to Major General Minimah to succeed him. But in a swift reaction, the Army faulted the claim, describing the media war as the handiwork of those that were voluntarily retired from the military. Meanwhile, a new director of defence information, DDI, has been appointed for the Defence Headquarters. He is Brigadier General Chris Olukolade. Olukolade replaced the former DDI, Colonel Mohammed Yerima. A statement issued and signedby Group Captain A. Makun stated that “following recent postings in the Nigerian Army, Brigadier-General Chris Olukolade has been appointednew Director of Defence Information”. It added that Brig. Gen. Olukolade assumed duty yesterday after a handing overand taking over between the two senior officers at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja. He had served as the director of army public relations and one-time spokesman of the ECOMOG Force in Liberia and Sierra-Leone. Until his new appointment, Olukolade was a staff officer atthe Defence Headquarters, Abuja. |
Please friends, apart from earning fat salary while in service, is there any thing that first, second or third star generals get when retired that colonels and below ranks doesn't get? |
