At the end of the day, the guys are saying the same thing. The op is partially right that money is not always the case and those opposing him are right too.
He's wrong by saying that any man who thinks women want only money in a relationship has low self esteem. That means a majority of Nigerian men have low self esteem and I totally disagree with that.
They're saying this cos it's something that always works, 95% of the time.
Would you choose an unsure route if there's a proven way to get where you're going faster?

Something is still involved but in kind. The intelligent guy helps her with her assignment/tutorials which some pay good money to get.
The tall and good looking guy provides warmth and security, which some women would die for.
The funny guy makes her happy. I'm sure you know that AY Live charges people in the show while she gets it for free.
In the end, money or something else is the reason for most relationships.
Even ladies from rich homes wants their man to support to show that he cares.
