Former Military governor of old Anambra State, Col. Robert Akonobi (rtd), has pleaded with Igbo parents to reduce the bride price of their daughters so that ‘’our young boys can marry them.” ‘’To me, this topic (bride price) has been dealth with in the past by Ndigbo, who came out with a reduced bride price, to enable our young boys marry our young girls,” Akonobi said.
Akonobi also cautioned that men should study their proposed wives closely and longer before engaging into marriage because “once you marry, no one else can put it asunder.” He spoke at the industrial city of Nnewi, Anambra State during the traditional wedding ceremony of the daughter of a business mogul, Chief Louis Onwugbenu, Onyinye and her husband, Bosah Chukwuogo, weekend.
Nnewi was agog as dignitaries from all works of life trooped to the residence of Chief Onwugbenu for the memorable event. The dignitaries who were from both the military, political and manufacturing circles, including Col Akonobi, Hon. Clement Nwankwu, former member of the House of Representatives; Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers of Gabros International Limited and Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Limited, Chief Gabriel and Innocent Chukwuma respectively, among others.
The issue of high bride price was discussed extensively on the occasion. Hon. Nwankwu, in his own speech, prayed that Chief Onwugbenu and his wife would live long to enjoy the fruits of their children, especially those who married from outside their areas.
Also, speaking, Mrs. Onwugbenu expressed gratitude that her daughter’s hand was given out in marriage and prayed that her in-laws who came all the way from Awka to marry her daughter, would go back home safely. Father of the bride, Onwugbenu, in his own speech, said he had already blessed his daughter and her husband to go and make a good home.
On the bride price controversy in Igbo land, Onwugbenu declared: “We do not charge money as bride price for someone to marry my daughter. To me, what is important is that my daughter should live in peace with her husband. Let her husband’s family members accept her as part and parcel of their family.”

<strong>The Federal Government has made a fresh announcement concerning the registration of sim cards by telecommunication companies.</strong>

It is now illegal for telecom operators or their representatives to do registration of SIM cards in an open or ‘’uncontrolled environment’’, an official has said.
The Head of Enforcement Unit at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Salisu Abdu disclosed this yesterday while speaking with journalists after three persons found registering SIM cards in open places were arrested in Abuja.
Abdu said government through the commission had issued a directive to all telecom operators since November to stop their agents from registering SIM cards under umbrellas and in kiosks effective from February 1, 2017.
“SIM registration should only be done in a controlled environment- a permanent building with logos and structures of the operators in place - with identities of the agents doing the registration.
“We came up with this so we will be able to trace where SIM cards are registered to stem the tide of rising crimes, especially kidnapping and militancy”, the NCC official said.
He said N5million would be slammed on any dealer or operator who flouts the directive.

One Mr Tairu jimoh who was worried by his wife’s stealing habit, has on Wednesday approached the Igando Customary Court, Lagos State to annul his three-year-old marriage.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Jimoh, 56, said that his wife, Esther, with whom he had two children in their marriage had penchant for stealing.
“My wife steals my money on regular basis and because of her love for stealing, I no longer keep money at home. She stole my cooking gas and also my land documents,’’ he said.
The petitioner said that it was not his wish to marry his wife initially, adding that it was because she told him that God revealed to her that he was her husband.
“My wife deceived me into marrying her, she told me that God revealed to her that I am her husband and I believed her,” the estranged husband said.
He said that Esther does not care for him, and she had vowed never to cook for him.
“The last time my wife gave me food was 18-months ago, in spite that I regularly dropped money for food, I still buy food outside to eat.’’
He said
According to him, Esther always striped herself to swear for him and those curses are beginning to affect my life. He said that his wife always defamed his character by telling people that he killed their child and that he also stole his company’s money.
He begged the court to dissolve the marriage that he does not love her anymore. Esther, 35, and a teacher, however, denied all the allegations leveled against her by her husband.
She described her husband as a stingy fellow.
“My husband is a tight-fisted man, he keep money inside his cap and wear it and use broom to remove it whenever he wanted to buy something.
“How will I even steal the money I did not see? Tairu is an irresponsible husband and father, he starves me and the children of money, I am the one responsible for their feeding and school fees.
“Tairu gave me his land documents when he was still toasting me, I never stole it,” she said.
The mother of two said that her husband proposed to her when she went to him to get an accommodation.
“When I was looking for an apartment, a church member directed me to my husband who is an estate agent. When I approached him, he started toasting me and later proposed, he told me that he wanted to delete poverty from my life and I accepted but he never did.
“He was the one that went to my house to pack my load to his house and we started living as husband and wife, no introduction, no dowry was paid,” she said.
According to her, Tairu denied the paternity of her second child without a reasonable cause. The respondent said that her husband chased away her benefactors claiming that they were witches.
She urged the court not to grant her husband’s wish for dissolution that she was still in love with him. The President of the court, Mr Adegboyega Omilola ordered both parties to attend the Alternative Resolution Dispute (ADR) with three of their family members.
He then adjourned the case until March 28, for further hearing.

A new report has shown that many Nigerians living in Germany may soon be sent home from that country in their numbers

Deported Nigerians arrive back in the country
It has been revealed that more than 12,000 Nigerian asylum seekers in Germany may likely be deported from the European nation next year.
The revelation was made by a German official said on Tuesday.
The country’s Global Head of programme, Migration and Development, Dr. Ralf Sanftenberg, said the Nigerians will be denied asylum status by German government.
Sanftenberg spoke when he visited the Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
Sanftenberg, who is the leader of delegation from the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, was on a site assessment mission for Nigerians who are voluntarily returning to the country.
He said, ”We have over 37,000 Nigerians in Germany and more than 12,000 of them are asylum seekers.
“There is a little chance for their applications to be moved and they may be forced to come back to Nigeria next year.”
He said 99 per cent of them were likely to be denied asylum status because Nigeria is not among war countries.
Sanftenberg, however, said if the asylum seekers are willing to return to Nigeria voluntarily they would not be forced back or deported but would be assisted through a support programme organised by Germany.

The governing council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has introduced new dress codes, by which its students have to abide with.
In a circular to undergraduates students of the university, the university management said, “indecent modes of exposure do not reflect the seriousness, dignity and character-moulding nature of the institution.”
The management warned undergraduates to desist from wearing tight outfits and those that expose sensitive parts of the body.
“It has been observed that some male and female students of the University of Lagos dress indecently on campus, even to lectures. Indecent dresses are either too tight, too short or expose sensitive parts of the body.
“Students should maintain a clean and well-cared for appearance in all settings on campus. Wearing of tight, strapless and revealing clothes whose length are above the knees are inappropriate,” the circular read.
Henceforth, male and female UNILAG students are not allowed to wear the following:
i. All tight-fitting clothes including skirts, trousers and blouses
ii. All clothes, which reveal sensitive parts of the body such as the bust, chest, belly, upper arms and the buttocks. Example of such dresses are transparent clothing, spaghetti tops, tubes, skirts and dresses with slits above the knees fall in this category.
iii. Outfits such as knickers and mini-skirts, dresses, which are not at least, knee length.
iv. Inappropriate outfits e.g party-wear, beach wear and bathroom slippers should not be worn to lectures.
iv. Outfits such as T-shirts, skirts and jeans, which carry obscene and subliminal messages.
vi. Trousers such as hip-riders and low waist jeans.

For matriculation and graduation ceremonies, the management mandated students to wear academic gowns on a black or grey suit. Lecturers and administrators have also been empowered to exclude students from academic activities if they are not properly dressed.

A woman who alleged that her jobless husband deceived her has narrated how he has been carrying the family burden since they married.

A civil servant, Faith Ogu, on Tuesday, dragged her unemployed husband, Joseph Ogu, to a Jikwoyi Customary Court in Abuja, seeking for divorce on the grounds that he deceived her about his ’employment’ status.
Faith told the court that her jobless husband had deceived her into believing he had a source of livelihood before their marriage, adding that she only got to know about his status as a ‘job-less’ person after they had tied the knot.
“He never told me that he had no job, instead he kept telling me that he works with the Zenith Bank and that he has a business in Lagos, that yields him millions.
“It was after I got married to him that I discovered the whole truth about him,”
Faith said.
She told the court that Joseph had also told her that he had built a house somewhere in Lugbe, but that after investigating, she realised that it was false.
Faith said all her efforts to encourage him find a job did not elicit any positive response, as such she wanted the marriage dissolved.
“He is lazy and does not want to do anything for a living; I have been lending him money, hoping that he would pay back.
“I sponsored our wedding, I even lent him money to pay my bride price,”
she said.
The petitioner said that she had reported the matter to her elder sister to see if she could advise him but to no avail.
“I beg this court to dissolve my marriage so that I can be free; I am tired of feeding, clothing and paying medical bills for my husband,”
she pleaded.
The Presiding Judge, Mr. Everyman Eleanya, however reiterated that the respondent had not been in court since the beginning of the case and therefore ordered that a Hearing Notice be pasted in his sister’s house.
He adjourned the case to February 9, for continuation of hearing.

Popular Nollywood actor John Okafor, aka Mr. Ibu, in a new interview, has revealed that he would have taken his life since 1997 due to the hardship he faced in life.
He said at that point in his life, things were so hard that he could barely afford to feed. To make matters worse, he had no roof over his head and suicide seemed like the easiest option.
Speaking with Saturday Beats, Mr Ibu said:
“Do you know that there was a day that I had prepared to kill myself in Ajao Estate? That day, I was prepared to jump into a well because of the situation that surrounded me .
Three days before that day, I had not eaten and I did not have hope of eating for the next week. I was only surviving on water and I hate it when I bother anyone.
Most of my close friends were not bothered about my well-being even though it was obvious that I was not alright. I remember December 18, 1997, a friend of mine who I squatted with called me in the morning and told me that he would be going home for Christmas and he did not want anyone to be in his room.
I assured him that no one would come to his place but he said he wanted me out of the room. I told him that I did not have another place to stay and he should trust me that as usual, I would take good care of the place. Though I was older than him, I did all the washing and cleaning of the house to the extent that I washed his panties and underwear.
I did that so that I could have a roof over my head. But out of anger, that my friend went into the house, brought out all my things and threw them outside, then he told me to leave his house, he locked his door and left.
From where I was seated, I was looking at the well. I thought to myself, ‘is it not better to end my life by jumping into the well so that when people return in the evening and they need water, they would discover my body and my friend would know that he was the reason I committed suicide?’
I went to the well and as I opened the lid and prepared to jump inside, the image of my mother’s face flashed through my mind. I quickly closed the well and began to wonder how my mother knew that I wanted to kill myself.
My mother was still alive at the time; she was about 80 years old. I went back and leaned by the wall. A neighbour, Francis, was playing a song by Michael Bolton titled ‘When I am back on my Feet Again.’ The song gave me hope and I decided to stay alive.”
After he had decided against killing himself, he needed to find somewhere to sleep and since he had no one to stay with; he opted to sleep under a lorry, a space where dogs used as their house.
He stayed there for a while till God sent a helper to him.
“I cleaned the place and was able to get some cartons which I used to do a tent. In the course of cleaning the place, I realised that it was dogs that used to sleep there at night but I had no choice.
” One night…
about 30 dogs were barking so no one could sleep so I had to move my cartons to another location. While I was changing my bearing, I saw some people gathering. I hid my cartons, went close to the place and saw that it was a movie audition. I saw some of my friends there like Pete Edochie, and a friend called Sandra Ezeh.
When Sandra saw me, she hugged me and said she was a big fan of my work especially my role in ‘Ikuku.’ She asked if I was doing anything and when I told her I wasn’t, she insisted that I accompany her to see her boyfriend.
Since I had no job, I followed her; beside, all I needed then was food. I was so hungry at the time that it began to affect my eye sight. Sadly, her boyfriend had travelled so she said we should go to see another friend.
We met the woman who owned a bar and when I asked for food, she said all she had was pepper soup and drinks. I told her to give me pepper soup and she was nice enough to tell them to give me two agidi with the pepper soup. After I ate the food, I fell into a deep sleep.
When I woke up, I saw an address, 125 Adetola Street, then immediately, I remembered that a friend had called me asking me to stay in his house because he was travelling to Germany and that was the address.
Immediately I crossed the street and went to the house. When I got into the house, my friend, Frank, just got in from London. He was so happy to see me that he hugged me and we both fell to the ground. He then said that no matter where I was staying, I had to move into his house.
