The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) is often described as "easy" or "simple," but it is important to distinguish between accessibility (how easy it is to get in and manage your time) and academic rigor (how hard the actual schoolwork is). Here is a breakdown of why NOUN is considered simpler than traditional universities, alongside the reality of what it takes to succeed there. 1. Ease of Entry (Admission) The most "simple" part of NOUN is the admission process. Unlike traditional Nigerian universities, NOUN removes the most common hurdles: No JAMB/UTME: You do not need to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. If you have your O’Level credits (WAEC/NECO), you are generally eligible. No Post-UTME: There are no additional entrance screenings or "post-JAMB" exams. Open Access: Admission is almost guaranteed if you meet the basic requirements for your course, and there is no "quota system" or "catchment area" limiting who can join. 2. Flexibility of "Time and Space" The "Work & Learn" motto is the core of why students find it simple to manage: Study at Your Own Pace: You aren't forced to sit in a lecture hall from 8 AM to 4 PM. You can study at midnight, on weekends, or during lunch breaks. Location Independent: With over 100 study centers nationwide, you can move from one state to another (e.g., due to a job transfer) and simply continue your studies at the nearest center without starting over. Self-Selection of Workload: You can choose how many courses to register for each semester. If you are busy, you can take 4 courses; if you have time, you can take 10. 3. Simplified Assessment System The way you are graded is very structured and predictable: TMAs (Tutor-Marked Assignments): These are online tests that make up 30% of your total grade. They are "open-book," meaning you can refer to your course materials while answering them from home. This provides a significant "cushion" for your final grade. CBT Exams: For lower-level courses (100L and 200L), exams are typically Computer-Based Tests (Multiple Choice). For many, this is "simpler" than writing long-form essays, though 300L to 800L students usually transition to "Pen-on-Paper" exams. Comparison: NOUN vs. Conventional Universities National Open University (NOUN) Conventional Universities (Unilag, ABU, etc.) Admission Easy (O'Level only) Difficult (JAMB + Post-UTME) Attendance Optional / Virtual Strictly Compulsory (70-75% rule) Strikes Not affected by ASUU strikes Frequently shut down by strikes Lectures Self-study / Online facilitation Face-to-face classroom lectures Graduation Dependent on your pace Fixed duration (usually 4–5 years) The "Not-So-Easy" Reality While the system is simple, the studying is not. Because there are no daily lectures to "spoon-feed" you the information, you are 100% responsible for your own learning. Self-Discipline: If you aren't a self-starter, you might find yourself failing because nobody is reminding you to read. No "Sorting": In many traditional schools, students might try to influence grades through "sorting" or lecturers' favors. At NOUN, the system is highly automated; what you score is what you get. Summary: NOUN is "easy" because it removes the stress of admission, strikes, and rigid schedules. However, it is "tough" because it requires high levels of personal discipline and reading ability to pass the exams. To help you move forward, let’s look at the specific requirements and the process for getting started at NOUN in 2026. 1. General Admission Requirements Regardless of the course, NOUN has a "baseline" for all applicants. Because NOUN is an Open and Distance Learning (ODL) institution, they prioritize "open access." To help you move forward, let’s look at the specific requirements and the process for getting started at NOUN in 2026. 1. Direct Entry (200 Level) If you already have a diploma or higher qualification, you can skip the first year: National Diploma (ND): Minimum of Lower Credit. NCE: Minimum of Merit pass. HND/Bachelors: Often allows you to start at 200 or even 300 level depending on the course. Postgraduate (PGD, Masters, PhD) PGD: Bachelor’s degree (Third Class) or HND (Lower Credit) from a recognized institution. Masters: Bachelor’s degree (Second Class Lower) or a PGD in a related field. The National Open University of Nigeria, NOUN, has established a centre with the goal of expanding its reach to keep up with developments in modern society and to open up new avenues for research on Africa as a whole. In 2011, NOUN had about 57,759 students. The Vice Chancellor at the time was Prof. Vincent Tenebe . The university for years operated from its administrative headquarters in Victoria Island, Lagos, before vice chancellor Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, moved it to its permanent headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, in 2016. It has over 75 study centres throughout the country.[4] It offers over 50 programmes and 750 courses. By its nature as an ODL institution, NOUN does not provide lectures to students in normal classrooms except some certain study centres. The study centre in Lagos for instance provides lectures to all the law undergraduates and supplies course materials to all students after the payment of tuition fees.
