The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says contrary to reports Godwin Emefiele, its governor, does not fly private chartered jets as a result of Nigeria’s economic realities. In a statement by Isaac Okoroafor, acting director corporate communications, the CBN said it used private jets in the past, long before Emefiele came into office, and particularly for critical assignments. The bank added that the flight taken by the governor and his family, for his mother’s burial was an Arik commercial flight, as it is with the “buy Nigeria” philosophy. The CBN “for several years in the past, used private and official chartered flights in making urgent travels to meet needs in remote, not-easily- accessible locations or in cases where timing might be critical to matters of urgent national importance”. “This practice was in place long before the assumption of office of the current Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele. “Indeed, in recognition of this critical need in its smooth operations, the CBN had in the 1990s acquired a dedicated jet for this purpose and for urgent currency movement”. The CBN added that it later conceded its private jet to the military and to the state house, also before Emefiele. “This was however taken over by the military administration when there was a more urgent need for it at the State House. “Thereafter, the CBN occasionally used the chartered services of private operators and those of the Presidential Fleet when available, both of which were paid for. “However in 2015, in response to the economic downturn and the cost-cutting stance of Government, Mr. Emefiele ordered the stoppage of the use of chartered flights by the Bank.” The apex bank made explicit explanations that Emefiele did not use any private jet or chartered flight for the burial of his mother, rather he promoted his “made-in- Nigeria” philosophy. “Since then, neither Mr. Emefiele nor any of the Deputy Governors has used the services of private chartered flights and the CBN has not paid a kobo for private jet services. “Mr Emefiele and indeed other principal officers of the CBN have religiously maintained the modest disposition of using regular flights, including doing several trips by road to and from different parts of the country. “It is also important to note here that no private jet was used by Mr. Emefiele, his immediate family, or indeed other principal officers of the Bank during the burial of Mr Emefiele’s mother. “All accounts still point to the fact that the Emefiele’s mother’s burial was a model in cost-cutting and an uncommon demonstration of his modest, ‘made in Nigeria’ philosophy.” https://www.thecable.ng/cbn-emefiele-flew-arik-not-private-jet

The Nigerian Communications Communication, NCC, said on Saturday that inactive mobile telephone lines on its networks dropped to 62.61 million in February, 2016. This is contained in the commission’s “Monthly Subscriber Data” released in Lagos and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria. The document showed that the inactive Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards reduced by 523,233 in the month from 63.13 million recorded in January. It said that “connected numbers’’ figure was 214.23 million during the period, reducing by 260,644 from 214.49 million recorded in January. “The Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks connected 3,677,676 subscribers as against 3,678,068 recorded in the month of January, thereby losing 392 customers in February. “The Fixed Wired/Wireless operators recorded 353,923 connected numbers in February as against 351,625 in January, adding 2,298 numbers to their networks. “Furthermore, the active subscribers on the telecommunications networks in the month of February stood at 151,620,358, increasing by 262,589 from the 151,357,769 telecommunications users in January.“The GSM networks had a share of 149,288,370 from the February 151,620,358 active lines as against 149,022,919 functional numbers in January, adding 265,451 active lines in February,” it said.ssion added that CDMA operators shared a total of 2,147,322 active subscribers in February, losing 660 from 2,147,982 active lines recorded in january. It also said that Fixed Wired/Wireless networks recorded 184,666 active lines in February, losing 2,202 customers from the 186,868 active subscribers in January. It explained that February subscriber data which showed a reduction of 260,644 from the connected lines in January implied that telecommunications operators were not eager to accumulate more subscribers. “The reduction in the inactive line showed that telecommunications subscribers were now responding to the ongoing SIM cards revalidation exercise,” www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/201501-nigerias-inactive-mobile-telephone-numbers-drop-62-million.html

The governor of Rivers State Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has said it would be very difficult for any political party to win the People Democratic Party (PDP) in the state considering that the state is a PDP state and coupled with his achievement within his short period in office. Governor Wike spoke Monday while answering questions as a guest in Channels Television morning Programme viewed from Government House Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital. Answering questions in some of the issues affecting the state and the recent conduct of the rerun election, the governor said the people of the state were determine to vote for PDP in all the constituencies in the state because of his achievement in the past few months in office. He said in spite of the poor allocation to the state, he was able to handle some of the road projects and completed some even when there were a lot of distractions that could made him to abandon his campaigns promises to the people. He noted that the internally generated revenue (IGR) of the state have increase from 4 billion to N9-N10 billion, adding that if there were high rate of insecurity in the state as being reported the IGR wouldn’t have increase because the investors would have run away. Governor Wike said: “Why it is difficult for anybody to win us in Rivers State is because the projects I have done in my short stay in office coupled that the state is a PDP state. The civil servants are happy with us, nobody will be happy when at the end of the months they cannot take their wages home. “We have done a lot to fulfill over campaign promises, If you go to Borokiri where the former governor was living at Okaki street, everybody was afraid to go there because of bad roads but today we have fixed the road and the people are happy. “In Diobu axis we have a lot of bad roads before now, today we have fixed them. All the general hospitals are death, some of the health centres are not functioning. What we are trying to do as a matter of policy is to pick one hospital each in the three senatorial districts and equip them. “We are also going to train and retrain our doctors, for now we are focusing on health and education. We don’t want to carry all at the same time. We received 4 Billion as allocation when our salary wage is N5. 5 billion. How do make up to pay salaries, when we took over I have IGR of 4-5 billion but I speak to you we have improved in our IGR to N9-N10 billion. “Which means nobody is running away from the state, because if people were leaving the state our IGR would not increase. And if the insecurity is much as is being claimed, why is our IGR increasing yet if you read on the pages of newspapers people will say Rivers of blood.” Wike who vowed not to venture into completion of the monorail project said Rivers people and stakeholders have told him to forget about the project and focus on the project that has direct meaning on the lives of the people of the state. He said the monorail project which he claimed has no meaning on the lives of the people have consumed over N45 billion, stressing further that he does not want to have headache speaking on monorail issue which he described as an elephant project. On the issue of insecurity in the state, governor Wike accused the Minister of Transportation Mr. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi of trying to destabilize the state through his desperation to capture Rivers State even when it is clear to him that his party cannot win PDP in the state. He said if President Mohammadu Buhari supports him there is no reason why he cannot achieve peace and stability in the state. http://thenationonlineng.net/no-party-can-beat-pdp-in-rivers-wike/ |
