Director-General of the National Agency for Food Drugs and Administration Control, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, has said that the regulatory agency had received four submissions from Nigerians, who claim to have found the cure to COVID-19. Prof Adeyeye on Tuesday said the entries followed a call for researchers and practitioners to submit potential solution to the deadly virus. She said, “I made a call for people to submit their application and I believe we have about three or four now and we are going to expedite the processing because it takes a while for us to go through the laboratory testing and what not but I have already given the directive to expedite. “So, where we are right now is just to make sure that the information submitted is okay and by the end of the week, we may be sending these samples to the lab after we must have gone to inspect the site where the products are made because we don’t want a product that somebody will take and the person will start vomiting. “So, we will go and inspect the site to make sure that whatever sample we are going to get must have been prepared in an environment that will not make the drug to compromise the health of the user. “If somebody says he or she has a remedy for COVID, first of all, we want to know the history of the plant or the family the plant belongs to, background information on the botanical characteristics of the plant, we will also want to know whether the plant has been used for anything before because sometimes, we use one plant for several diseases and the usage will be different for a particular disease. “We will also ask for any written or published document about the plant because the plant may not come from Nigeria and it may be available in other climes. "So, we want to ensure that we get enough information and once that application is submitted with the information, then we will start the process and part of the process involves inspecting where the medicinal product was prepared to be sure that it is not going to compromise the health of the people." http://saharareporters.com/2020/05/19/we-have-recieved-four-potential-covid-19-cure-submissions-nigerians-%E2%80%94nafdac |

Popular Cameroonian pastor, Frankline Ndifor, who claimed he could cure coronavirus is dead. The Pastor, who was also a presidential candidate in the country’s last election, a week ago prayed for the healing of some coronavirus patients who turned up at the Kingship International Ministries Church. The doctor who treated Ndifor, Dr Gaelle Nnanga told the Voice of America that the Pastor died less than 10 minutes after suffering severe respiratory difficulties resulting from COVID-19. He told VOA that he took a medical team to the late Pastor’s house after he got calls from some members of Ndifor’s Kingship International Ministries Church that he was having severe respiratory difficulties. Meanwhile, health officials have asked those who had contact with the pastor to report to hospitals to be tested for COVID-19. Ndifor has been buried in front of his residence Saturday by workers of Cameroon’s COVID-19 response team in Douala. Ndifor came 7th out of nine candidates in 2018’s presidential election with 23,687 votes. So far, Cameroon has recorded 3,529 confirmed cases of coronavirus with 140 deaths recorded. https://dailypost.ng/2020/05/19/popular-pastor-who-claimed-could-cure-coronavirus-dies-of-covid-19/ |

Leaked presidential speech, shame. |
There is nothing NCDC can do now, as this country is full of corruption and they are playing politics with everything. Tough situation require tough division. Lockdown without relief materials, some vehicles are moving and people are following it from Lagos to other destinations. Many people have this virus without symptoms and unknowingly spreading it. Decision makers are confused, they close down place of worship while other places are opened. Only God can help us |
The government also asked the organized labour to develop new strategies for workplace operations at the end of the current outbreak of the pandemic. These were part of the disclosures at Friday’s briefing of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 in Abuja. Speaking during the briefing, the Director General of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu in his said Nigerians would have to learn to live with the pandemic until there is a vaccine to halt it. “…we really encourage all Nigerians, because we are at the beginning of a journey and the most likely scenario is that until we have a vaccine, we would have to learn to live with COVID-19 in our country. “We have to tell ourselves the truth about this and encourage one another because there is no point doing that. All of us here are just as vulnerable as catching the virus as are many other people. We will do our best, but we will always have to remember that it is a virus, you cannot build a wall and anything can still happen in spite of our best efforts”, he added. Meanwhile, the WHO Country Representative in Nigeria, Dr Fiona Braka who spoke of the rigorous processes involved in approving a vaccine for any disease said 89 vaccines are currently in development globally. She said; “on the subject of vaccines and clinical trials for COVID-19, I will like to say that research and development is an important aspect of the response and researchers around the world are working hard on accelerating the development of vaccines and therapeutics for Covid-19. “WHO has launched various working groups to accelerate various aspects of vaccine development. “Together with global health actors and partners, over the past week, WHO launched the Access to Covid-19 Tools ACT Accelerator, a global collaboration to accelerate development for equitable access to new Covid-19 diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines. “We have a total of 89 vaccines that are in development globally, including seven in clinical evaluation and several therapeutics are in clinical trials. “WHO is committed to ensuring that as medicines and vaccines are developed, they are shared equitably with all countries and people. “We do have the solidarity trial which is an international clinical trial to help find an effective treatment for Covid-19, launched by the WHO and partners. “More than 100 countries have joined the solidarity trial and to date, over 1, 200 patients have been randomized from the first five countries to evaluate the safety and efficacy of full drug and drug combinations. “Nigeria has also expressed interest to be part of this solidarity trial and efforts are underway to start the process in Nigeria”, she added. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/05/nigerians-must-learn-to-live-with-covid-19-until-we-have-a-vaccine-%e2%80%95ncdc/ |

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte vowed Sunday to reopen schools by September and allow many businesses to resume in a week’s time as the country emerges from a near-total shutdown. Conte told La Repubblica newspaper that he will spell out the full details of how Italy will ease its way out of the world’s longest active coronavirus lockdown by the start of next week. He has reportedly been presented with a cautious proposal that involves a gradual lifting of restrictions over the course of May. Italy’s official death toll of 26,384 is Europe’s highest and only second globally to the United States. But its number of cases has been ebbing and Italy believes its contagion rate — reported at between 0.2 and 0.7 — is low enough below the key threshold of 1.0 to try and get back to work. “We cannot continue beyond this lockdown — we risk damaging the country’s socioeconomic fabric too much,” Conte told La Repubblica. – ‘Very high risk’ – Italy gradually closed everything over the first half March as it became increasingly clear that an initial batch of cases in northern areas around Milan was spreading. Scientists now believe that Italy’s infections probably began in January — if not earlier — and that the virus was running rampant by the time the first official COVID-19 death was recorded on February 21. But Italy’s health care system held the line and Conte now appears to feel safe enough to focus on mending an economy that his team expects to shrink by eight percent this year. Conte said his government will “allow a large number of companies” to restart on May 4. Italy’s schools were closed before most other businesses and will now be one of the last to reopen. He said the return to school was filled with peril because many teachers were older and at greater risk of catching the virus. “Schools are at the centre of our attention and will reopen in September,” the premier said. Conte explained that resuming tuition before then involved “a very high risk of contagion”. – ‘Greater freedom’ – Many Italians are most concerned about when they will finally be able to walk in parks and jog without being stopped and fined by the police. Italy’s stay-at-home orders were announced nationally on March 9 and require everyone to stay within about a block of their front door. Many have turned their roofs into improvised gyms and even tennis courts in a collective effort to avoid going stir crazy. “We are not yet in a position to restore full freedom of movement, but we are studying a relaxation of the current, strict regime,” Conte said. “We will make sure to allow greater freedom of movement while maintaining our guarantee to prevent and contain contagion.” Media reports say the government might allow people to move freely within cities but limit their travel between the country’s 20 regions. Conte was also reportedly considering the option of outfitting airports and train stations with thermal scanners that can flag people who are running fevers. But Conte cautioned against expecting bars and restaurants to open their doors in May — or tourists returning this summer. “We will be reviewing our social distancing rules,” said Conte. “But this does not mean that we will be abandoning them.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/04/italys-conte-vows-to-reopen-schools-in-september/ |
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has advised Nigerians to obey the lockdown order of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), as part of measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in the country. The PUNCH reports that the Federal Capital Territory Abuja as well as Lagos and Ogun States have been on lockdown since 11pm, March 30, following the President’s directive that residents of the state, excluding essential service providers, stay at home and observe social distancing. Subsequently, some governors of the 28 states affected by the pandemic have also ordered lockdowns in their territories. The 78-year-old cleric during a sermon broadcasted online on Sunday urged residents in the country to stay at home and not endanger their lives. He gave the advice while preaching on a topic tagged ‘Power’ with texts taken from Acts 1:4-8. He said, “There are categories of power. There is political power. Ecclesiastes 8:4 says where the word of a king is, there is power. You put it in the modern language, where the word of the President is, there is power. “If you don’t believe that, just check what is happening now. The President sits in his house and makes a decree or pronouncement, everybody stay at home, and if you love yourself, stay at home.” According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control as of Saturday night, over 1000 cases of the novel virus have been reported in the country including over 30 fatalities and above 200 recoveries. https://punchng.com/covid-19-stay-at-home-if-you-love-yourself-adeboye/ |
People suffering from Asthma have complained of being mistaken for coronavirus patients because of the occasional breathing difficulties they encounter. Some of them, who spoke in Bauchi say they are also being stigmatised as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic They told the News Agency of Nigeria in Bauchi on Sunday that because ‘breathing difficulties’ is one of the important symptoms in determining a case of coronavirus prior to a medical test, they were being mistaken for COVID-19 patients, particularly in public places. They said, for this reason, anytime they experienced an asthma attack in public, they were treated with scorn, sometimes with people fleeing from the scene. They said since it was not possible under such circumstances to satisfactorily explain themselves, they faced enormous embarrassment. An asthma patient, Mrs Hadiza Usman, said the most annoying aspect was that even some people in the neighbourhood, who were aware of their status as asthma patients, display such attitude. “The phobia for coronavirus has reached the level that even people that know you become jittery whenever you experience an asthma attack. “Sometimes, even relations are not comfortable; I know of somebody whose brothers contemplated calling NCDC to help determine whether it was the normal asthma attack or coronavirus,” she said. Another patient, Mohammed Umar, said he had experienced stigmatisation twice while trying to withdraw money from a bank. “We had queued up outside waiting for our turn to enter the banking hall when l had a mild attack. “Knowing the implication, I excused myself and kept a distance, but when the attack subsided and I went back to the queue, nobody was willing to stay close to me. “One of the customers even drew the attention of the bank’s security personnel, who approached me, yet even after explaining the situation, nobody was willing to take chances.” Another patient, Umaru Galadima, said he had experienced such stigmatisation but said whoever was skeptical had a genuine reason to be suspicious. “With the coronavirus pandemic moving like a bushfire, everybody must be careful. In any case, how do you differentiate difficulty in breaching occasioned by an asthma attack and one caused by coronavirus? “I personally had cause to move away from a person that had a mild asthma attack, until I was convinced it was not a case of COVID-19,” he said. On his part, Usman Haruna told NAN that he was no longer comfortable with the situation. “Frankly speaking, sometimes I become scared when I experience an attack, and I always pray to God to let it be that it’s asthma attack and not coronavirus in disguise,” he said. He advised asthma patients to be vigilant and be able to distinguish mild asthma attacks from symptoms of coronavirus. The symptoms of Coronavirus, as outlined by medical experts, include difficulty in breathing, fever, cough, and runny nose, among others; while the major sign of asthma attack is difficulty in breathing, chest pain, and cough, among others. https://punchng.com/we-are-being-mistaken-for-covid-19-patients-asthmatics/ |
