In 2013, he was elected Chairman of the then newly formed PDP Governors Forum. Akpabio lost his re-election bid to the Senate in the last general election. He will be remembered by the people of Akwa Ibom for the infrastructural transformation of the state capital, Uyo, and the adjoining districts. Anambra Chris Ngige, from Anambra State, is another returning minister. Born on August 8, 1952, Ngige was governor of Anambra State from May 29, 2003, to March 17, 2006, on the platform of the PDP. The National Pension Commission (PenCom) on Monday commenced the verification and enrolment of employees of Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) due to retire between January to December 2020. The Head, Corporate Communications Department, PenCom, Mr Peter Aghahowa at the inauguration of the two-day exercise said it was meant for employees who had attained the age of 60 or 35 years in service. He said others included in the exercise were employees of tertiary institutions who had served for 35 years or had attained 70 years of age. Aghahowa said that the retirees were asked to come with their employment letters, promotion letters and other documents to enable the commission to calculate what their benefits would be. He also advised impending retirees to obtain their National Identity Number (NIN) because its now one of the requirements for the exercise. “The overall intention of PenCom is to calculate and transmit the total liability to the Federal Government so that adequate budgetary provisions will be made for retirees in the year 2020. “On the issue of Accrued Rights, I want to assure the general public that the backlog is being cleared. “The government is releasing funds and as they release funds, we are clearing the backlog. Right now, we have cleared up to August 2018. “This is why we are pushing for more funds to be budgeted and released to PenCom so that we can clear much of the backlog,’’ he said. Aghahowa said that the PenCom office was still open for those that could not make it for the two-day exercise for one reason or the other. Meanwhile, a future retiree, Hajiya Aishatu Ibrahim urged PenCom to work on their servers and network so that the enrolment exercise would be seamless. “My advice to those that are still in service is that they should start preparing for retirement by getting involved in a business. “You cannot cope with retirement allowance alone. You need to augment your income and that’s why its important to start a business now,’’ she said. Mr Chinedu Kosisochukwu appealed to the government to take steps to resolve on time the delay in payment of Accrued Rights. “I am afraid to think that when I retire, it will take up to a year before I start receiving my pension. Please Government should do something about that. “At least when one retirees, within one to two months payments of entitlements should start. We hope that the government achieves this soon,’’ he said. Kosisochukwu said that delay in payments was also one of the causes of corruption in the civil service, as workers steal to “save for the rainy day.’’ READ MORE ON:https://gistsala.com/fg-begins-enrolment-2020-retirees/

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Thursday urged the leadership of the Miyetti-Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) to call their members who are violent to order. The President, CAN, Dr Samson Ayokunle, who made the call at a news conference in Abuja, said until they were called to order they cannot regain the trust and respect of Nigerians. The cleric explained that nobody hates the Fulani until some Fulani began to act violently and killing innocent people. CAN said that if there was any enemy from any Fulani man, the Fulani man created the enemy for himself, they have been living peacefully for many years in our various communities, till the killing issues started. ”In those days, our children married them, they married our children, but when they became too violent and started carrying AK47, killing people, what type of play is that? that’s a dangerous play. ”We can no longer think we are friends with that type of play it’s too dangerous, so let them call their people to order and ensure that they remove the enmity they have created around an average Fulani person,” he said. He challenged their leaders to call out the violent ones among them to order, that is the only way people will respect them and people can trust them again. Ayokunle also charged the government to step up its security system across the country with a view to stopping the unending killings. He further said that the association had taken it stands in the alleged rape case against the founder of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), Pastor Abiodun Fatoyinbo. He noted that the allegation no matter how bad it may be, remains an allegation until proven otherwise, that is until it is properly investigated and we have a truth to hold onto. ”We have told you without mincing words that we will never support immorality in whatever form, it is alien to the culture of the church, to the teachings of Christ. ”And there is no pulpit that I know in Nigeria that the members are taught immorality, but we will not condemn until we have reasons to condemn, let the panel come out with the result let’s know what the truth is. ”I told you in the press release we issued that we have given the right to Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), because we don’t deal with individual churches, we deal with blocs. ”We have directed PFN, an arm of a bloc, which is also large enough to investigate that matter. I am telling you under God that PFN has set up that panel and that panel had been given two weeks within which to submit its report, ”Not only that, the two individuals involved have been invited by the committee and we are assuring them that nothing will be covered,” he said.(NAN) https://gistsala.com/call-violent-members-order-can-tells-miyetti-allah/ |

Today, July 18 is Nelson Mandela International Day. The United Nations declared the Nelson Mandela Day in November 2009 as a global call to action for everyone to impact on the planet. In commemoration of the 2019 edition, therefore, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres has paid glowing tribute to the world legend. Also, as part of activities to mark the day, UN General Assembly will on Thursday hold an informal meeting in honor of the former world leader. Mandela was a Nobel Laureate for Peace, anti-apartheid campaigner and first democratically-elected president of South Africa. Mandela, who led South Africa between 1994 and 1999, died on Dec. 5, 2013, after suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection. He was aged 95. Here are Guterres’ words on the legendary Madiba: Mandela was an extraordinary global advocate for dignity and equality who anyone in public service should emulate. He was one of the most iconic and inspirational leaders of our time.” Nelson Mandela exemplified courage, compassion and commitment to freedom, peace and social justice. He lived by these principles and was prepared to sacrifice his liberty and even his life for them. As we work collectively for peace, stability, sustainable development and human rights for all, we would be well served to recall the example set by Mandela. Our best tribute is found in actions. Every one of us can step up and act for enduring change. Nelson Mandela’s message to the world is clear and we all have the duty to do so. On this day of reflection on Nelson Mandela’s life and work, let us embrace his legacy and aspire to emulate his example. SOURCE:https://gistsala.com/tribute-mandela-antonio%e2%80%afguterres/

More than 303 Nigerian students from the 17 states of southern Nigeria have received no less than $7.5m in full or partial scholarships from 225 American universities and colleges to study in the United States for the 2019-2020 academic session. A statement signed by Information Specialist, Public Affairs Section, Temitayo Famutimi, notes that the Acting United States Consul General, Osman Tat, disclosed this in Lagos on Tuesday during the 2019 EducationUSA pre-departure orientation for students who have received offers of admission and scholarships to attend U.S. colleges and universities this fall. Noting that the U.S. remains a top destination for international students, Tat explained that the list of acceptances for Nigerian students for the upcoming academic year has been quite impressive, cutting across many of the 50 U.S. states. “I congratulate each one of you on your tremendous success. This is a very important step in your life. “I encourage you to make the most out of your time in the United States to acquire the requisite skills and knowledge needed to support Nigeria’s development,” Tat told the group of U.S.-bound students. They include Stanford University, The George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, Purdue University, Tufts University, Boston University, Emory University, and Howard University, among many others. The pre-departure orientation is intended to assist students to prepare for their move from Nigeria to attend a college or university in the United States. Participants also had the opportunity to meet with students currently studying in the United States who offered tips on how to prepare for the U.S. academic, social, and cultural environment. Among the departing students are 13 EducationUSA Opportunity Fund grantees —10 undergraduate and 3 graduate students, with full scholarships — who received financial aid to cover the up-front cost of obtaining admission. Gov. David Umahi on Monday in Abakaliki swore-in the Ebonyi new Acting Chief Judge, Justice Anselm Nwaigwe, who replaced the retired former Chief Judge, Justice Alloy Nwankwo. Umahi, who performed the ceremony in the presence of top government functionaries, leaders and stakeholders of the Ezza-clan where Nwaige hails from, commended the peaceful transition to the office’s new occupier. The governor commended the former chief judge for “giving birth” to a successor without bitterness, rancour or fighting as obtained in other places. “There is a unique unity in the land of Ebonyi and judges in the state are also unique and are guided in all judicial functions by the fear of God. “We don’t have much advice to offer you but if you cannot surpass the record of the former chief judge, try and maintain it. “I know you have learnt much from the former chief judge being close to him,” he said. He said that the National Judicial Council (NJC) will soon communicate to the government on Nwaigwe’s confirmation as the state’s substantial chief judge. “We will then communicate appropriately to the House of Assembly which in its uniqueness does not delay its proceedings. “We are hopeful to gather again soon to remove the acting from your position,” he said. He thanked the leaders and stakeholders from the Ezza clan and promised that all indigenes who would be displaced as result of the state’s international airport in the area, would be adequately resettled and compensated. Mr Cletus Ofoke, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, noted that Section 271. Sub Section 4 of the 1999 constitution as amended stipulates that the position of the chief judge must be occupied in the absence of the previous occupier. “This ceremony is remarkable because it was devoid of succession internal politics and rancour that is obtained in other states,” he said. Nwaigwe, in his reaction, thanked the government and the entire judicial community for the confidence reposed in him and promised not to disappoint them. Chief Charles Mkpuma, the Chairman of Ebonyi Traditional Rulers Council, thanked the governor for appointing an Ezza indigene into his administration and promised that there would be no resistance to the siting of the airport project in the area. Umahi afterwards, swore-in 15 additional Senior Special Assistants (SSA) and Senior Assistants (SA) into his cabinet. SOURCE:https://gistsala.com/umahi-swears-new-ebonyi-acting-chief-judge/

Zamfara Governor, Bello Matawalle, has said that the state would implement the Ruga settlements initiative, to resettle herders and boost economic activities. The governor told the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajiamila who visited the state that the state government would go ahead with the programme in spite of its suspension by the Federal Government. “I wish to inform the Honourable Speaker that the controversial issue of Ruga, which is being hotly debated across the vast spectrum of the federation, has been unanimously accepted in our state. “Since time immemorial, the communities of farmers and herders in the state have been living side by side, reinforcing each other, even though there were cases of skirmishes from time to time, they did not take the ugly dimension they have taken in our contemporary times. “We are confident that Ruga Programme which will transform the nomads to sedentary life will significantly address the farmer/herder crisis in the state,” he said. The governor said arrangements had been put in place to set up the Ruga settlement on a 100 hecter land in each of the three senatorial districts of the state. According to him, the government would provide schools, hospitals and veterinary clinics as well as earth dams in the new settlements. He appealed to the leadership of the National Assembly to facilitate the release of N10 billion Federal Government Special Intervention Fund approved for the state to resettle people displaced by banditry. The governor also called on the federal government to establish a North-West Development Programme to address the ravages of banditry and other challenges in the zone. The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that Gbajabiamila had chaired a peace accord between bandits’ groups and local vigilantes in Gusau. He promised to do his best on the issues raised by the governor. The speaker hailed Matawalle over the successes recorded under the Peace and Reconciliation Initiative targeted at ending banditry in the state. He noted that the voluntary release of 109 kidnap victims in the last 10 days was highly commendable and an indication that all sides were willing to give peace a chance. President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday led governors and other eminent personalities in congratulating veteran journalist and former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba on his 80th birthday. The birthday was beautifully heralded last Monday in Lagos with the launch of Osoba’s memoir, “Battlelines: Adventures in Journalism and Politics”. Buhari felicitated with family, friends, professional colleagues and political associates of the elder statesman and loyal All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart. Also on Sunday, Governors Adegboyega Oyetola (Osun), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun) and Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta) separately described Osoba as a leader with great accomplishment in his journalism profession and as an administrator. The Ogun State APC extolled his virtues, describing him as “an epitome of integrity and service”. A former member of the House of Representatives, Kunle Adeyemi, called the former governor a “die-hard progressive and staunch believer in grassroots development”. Buhari, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said Osoba has successfully translated words into action by fully participating in politics and governance, and leaving a legacy of service as a governor of his state in two republics – 1992-1993 and 1999-2003. The President hailed Osoba’s unwavering commitment to building strong institutions that would encourage participatory democracy and development in the country. He noted that their many conversations, including the visit to the State House last week, had always centered on Nigeria and her people, with wise and insightful counsels on engendering a better country. “President Buhari prayed that the almighty God will grant the former governor longer life, good health and strength to continue serving the country he loves so much, and bless his family,” the statement said. Oyetola, in a letter to the APC leader, also noted Osoba’s “contributions to the development of the country and service to humanity over the years” According to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS) Mr. Adeniyi Adesina, the governor said: “Your attainment of the octogenarian rank attests to the fact that you have enjoyed tremendous divine grace and blessings from the Almighty God. “You have distinguished yourself in all your endeavours as a journalist, political leader, governor, administrator and elder statesman. “Your impact as a two-time Ogun State Governor is etched on the minds of citizens and residents of the state. No wonder you were bestowed with important chieftaincy titles in acknowledgement of your performance by the key traditional rulers in the state. “As you look forward to your next birthday, I, on behalf of my family, the government and people of Osun State, share in your celebration and pray that the Almighty God will continue to protect you and grant you good health and longer life.” To Abiodun, “Chief Osoba will be remembered for his resilience, tenacity of purpose and political brinkmanship that has honour”. In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Kunle Somorin, Abiodun said: “The title ‘statesmen’ is not an honorific ascribed or acclaimed by default of social status. It is a journey through the path of excellence, sacrifice, selflessness and dedication to the destination of honour and fulfillment. “You have journeyed that path for eight decades as a thoroughbred reporter, politician and administrator.” He said as a political son of Osoba, he has learnt a lot from the octogenarian, saying: “We are so very proud of the heritage you bequeath to us” Okowa described Osoba as an “accomplished patriot and role model to modern day journalists in Nigeria”. A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, in Asaba, noted that Osoba did not only excel in journalism, but also in politics, culminating in his election as Ogun State governor on two different occasions. The governor lauded the celebrant for his exclusive reports that shook the nation in his heydays in the journalism profession, adding: “Chief Osoba is a man of “courage and resilience”, whose selflessness is worthy of emulation by the younger generation of journalists and politicians. The Ogun State APC extolled his virtues, describing him as “an epitome of integrity and service.” The Ogun APC, in a statement on Sunday by its Publicity Secretary, Caretaker Committee, Tunde Oladunjoye, remarked that it acknowledged the ex-governor’s contributions to the overall growth of Nigeria and the state. The party added that Osoba is a pillar the party rested on when it was abandoned and also confronted by the party’s biggest beneficiary in the last eight years. The party stated: “As you celebrate your 80th birthday today sir, we acknowledge and appreciate your contributions to the overall development of Nigeria, especially Ogun State. As a leader, you have demonstrated uncommon passion for mentoring and actualisation of common goals for the benefit of the greater majority. “Yours is a commendable and recommendable model. On behalf of the leadership and entire members of the ruling APC in Ogun State, we wish you many more years in good health and in service to humanity.” Adeyemi, who represented Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency between 2011 and 2015 at the National Assembly, said Osoba’s background in journalism contributed immensely to his penchant for progressive politics, which culminated in the pursuance of grassroots development while he governed Ogun. Mr Albert Andinam, Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Cross River Chapter, on Sunday urged the Super Eagles to make less defensive mistakes in the semi-final clash against Algeria. Super Eagles of Nigeria will face Desert Warriors of Algeria on Sunday, July 14 in the on-going African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2019 in Egypt. Andinam, who gave the advice in an interview on Sunday in Calabar said the Algerians were very organised and would not fail to punish them if they made such mistakes. He said that the team had made a couple of defensive mistakes in previous matches of the competition even though they came out victorious in those matches except the match against Madagascar. He, however, urged the team to redouble efforts and to make it to the finals, noting that the Super Eagles were a very talented side and could beat any team in the continent. He called on Gernot Rohr, Head Coach of the team, to keep faith with the winning team as it appeared that the boys understood themselves. “In situations like these, you don’t change a winning team; Gernot Rohr has all the talents in his team, he should know how to utilise them when it matters most. “I think our goalkeeping department has some questions to answer, although, football is a team sport. “The team is as strong as its weakest link; if that department is sorted out, I think we are home and dry,’’ the Chairman said. On the recent introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the competitions, Andinam said the innovation was the best thing to ever happen to football. He said that it had added pep to officiating and checked the biases of referees. According to him, even though the technology was mostly used during contentious situations in the game, it has curtailed a lot of claims and counterclaims in the game. “Initially, we used to see a lot of pranks from strikers just to attract questionable calls from the referee that would end up being contentious. “But now, the strikers and defenders are a bit more careful because they know VAR is there. “It is just that in this part of the globe, we are not actually used to it. “I think it should be enforced in all the football federations by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), the world football governing body. “I think it should have been introduced earlier in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2019 so players can get acquainted and be less suspicious. “This is because referees are human and may not see some infringements, but VAR catches them with precision and has an option of playback,’’ Andinam said. FIFA officially approved VAR for use on March 16, 2018, in Bogota, Columbia and the 2018 World Cup in Russia was the first competition where the technology was used in full. The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Sunday said that the Federal Government was doing everything possible to improve the nation’s security architecture to ensure the protection of lives and property. Osinbajo said this in Akure when he visited Chief Reuben Fasoranti, Afenifere’s leader, to sympathise with him over the death of his daughter, Mrs Funke Olakunrin. “We are looking at the whole security architecture and trying to scale up and ensure that we are able to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians. “Security in a big country like Nigeria, as you can imagine the challenge, is dynamic and we also have to be consistently dynamic to ensure that we are able to beat the challenges as they appear,’’ he said. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the late Olakunrin was shot on Friday by gunmen in Ore, headquarters of Odigbo Local Government Area, Ondo State. The Vice President, who spoke with journalists in Akure at the residence of Fasoranti, described the incident as tragic while reiterating the importance of community policing system and intelligence gathering in securing the country. Osinbajo recalled how President Muhammadu Buhari recently met the service chiefs and the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr Mohammed Adamu, during which the latter laid out a new policy of the community policing. “One of the most important things in this sort of crime, because they are largely economic crimes, is that people try to make money by kidnapping. ‘‘Another important thing is intelligence gathering; that is why we have the community policing system where policemen would be trained in their own local governments and they would remain there. “This is as close as we get to the community policing structure that we expect to have while we are engaging the Army so that there will be a bit of more military presence especially along the roads.’’ The Vice President explained further that the Inspector-General of Police had already committed to ensure that there was full coverage of the police and even helicopters. “This is to fasten the search for these killers and also to ensure that there is adequate police presence to deter this kind of terrible situation from re-occurring,’’ he said. He expressed hope that there would be peace and calm as “some of the steps taken begin to come into fruition’’. For his part, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, National leader, All Progressives Congress, described the incident as seriously unacceptable. Tinubu expressed concern about insecurity in the country and its challenges, which he said, must be faced squarely. “The security challenges are numerous across the country. We have to fight it. More police are being recruited but it will take time to train and deploy them to various areas. “Additional police patrols and security reinforcements are necessary along Ore Road and other black spots. “We have discussed it among the various authorities and the governor is eminently aware and being proactive about it. “We also have to fight poverty, unemployment and other causes that might lead people to crime and equally create opportunities to convert this tragedy to prosperity,’’ he said. Dignitaries at the residence include Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, Sen. Babafemi Ojudu, Special Adviser to the President on Political matters and Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun Governor and APC stalwart. The Senate on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to ban the production, importation or circulation of sniper insecticide, a product currently used to commit suicide. This followed a motion sponsored by Sen. Theodore Orji (PDP-Abia) and 15 others on the rising incidence of suicides among Nigerians. Orji, while making his presentation noted with grave concern, the rising cases of suicide ,particularly among young Nigerians. He said suicide could be prevented particularly when family, friends and close relatives of the person contemplating suicide provided support, either by way of encouragement, listening to them or removing means of committing suicide such as dangerous drugs and chemicals especially sniper. He also said that it is worrisome that the number of Nigerians taking their lives had assumed a frightening dimension , saying that government, religious institutions and other relevant corporate bodies have not addressed the ugly situation in the country. Orji said that there is need to create awareness on how to control stress and depression by government, religious institutions and other relevant corporate bodies and the establishment of trauma centres across the federation. This, he said would also reduce the rate of suicide in the country. Ministry of Happiness Sen. Bamidela Opeyemi(Ekiti) said the issue of suicide was more of a sociological issue that has to do with depression, mental issues and ultimately poverty. He said the senate must interface with the executive to address the challenges in the economy by creating opportunities for employment via industrialisation and agriculture. Contributing, Sen.Rochas Okorocha (APC-Imo) said many Nigerians were commiting suicide because they were not happy. He said the government should find out why people were not happy and why they were talking their lives. Okorocha, therefore advocated for the creation of a government Department or Ministry of Happiness to address the problem. Adopting the motion, the senate also urged the federal government through the Ministry of Information, National Orientation Agency (NOA),Ministry of Health to create awareness on how to control stress and depression. The senate also urged the federal government through the National Universities Commission (NUC) to review the school curriculum and come up with compulsory courses that would enable students place value on their lives. It also urged religious bodies across the federation to always preach love, peace and how to relieve stress and depression. The senate also said there was need to engage the executive to expand its special intervention programme of to leverage on extant schemes like the N-Power in creating economic opportunities for the vulnerable people. The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the visit of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s to Egypt for the on-going African Cup of Nations (AFCON) as insensitive, at a time the state faced two tragic incidents. The Publicity of the party in the state, Mr Taofik Gani raised the concern in a statement he issued on Sunday in Lagos. He said at a time the state was still mourning over Thursday’s pipeline explosion in Ijegun, it was disappointing that the governor had chosen to remain in Egypt. Gani pointed out that governor was expected to have aborted his trip to visit the site to condole with the victims and community. ”Pictures of Mr Sanwo-Olu currently at the AFCON competition in Egypt have gone viral on social media, thus provoking reactions from various quarters. ”While we are not condemning the gesture of the governor to go and watch AFCON and support the Super Eagles, we are vehemently opposed to the timing. ”The PDP expected the governor to pay visits to the families of innocent people who lost their lives to the fire disaster. ”We also expected him to visit those who sustained severe burns at the hospitals and pick up their medical bills. ”The governor’s presence in Egypt at this time of losses to boat mishaps and explosion is insensitive, and we are urging him to return home to do the needful,” he said. Gani said that the party had it in good authority that the trip of Sanwo-Olu along with some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) cost the state N470m. He described the trip as a waste of tax payer’s money, saying it was morally wrong in view of the challenges in the state. The Publicity Secretary said the problems of bad roads, gridlock and others were begging for attention, urging Sanwo-Olu to give governance priority. Reacting, APC Assistant Publicity Secretary in the state, Mr Abiodun Salami, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Sanwo-Olu was in Egypt as part of a Federal Government delegation, and the trip did not cost the state a penny. He said the alleged cost of N470m for the trip was the figment of imagination of the PDP. ”These people are not in tune with reality. How can you say the governor spent N470m on a trip when he went as part of Federal Government’s delegation? ”The allegation is all lies, the trip did not cost the state a penny. “Sanwo-Olu is a lover of sports and that must have been a reason he was chosen as part of the delegation. ”On the Ijegun fire, everybody is sad about it and I can tell you that Sanwo-Olu, as a responsive governor, is coordinating activities even from Egypt to ensure things are alright in the community. ”The PDP failed the country for 16 years and now they are raising bogus issues to smear a working government,” he said. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Sunday said that it had received request for change of names, date of birth and others since it made it public that it would probe the results of Nigerians and shame those who cheated the system in the last ten years. The board said some of the complaints it had received were from prominent persons in the society over request to change their state of origin, local government, date of birth, gender or email address and subject combination of candidates. JAMB’s Head of Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, disclosed these in a bulletin in Abuja, the nation’s capital. Benjamin said the board has decided to crosscheck and revalidate the biometrics of past candidates owing to the number of complaints it had received. He said the board believed that these complaints were means through which some candidates cheated the board and the system in the past. According to him, the board has vowed to publish the names of the imposters in order to serve as a deterrent to others as well as stem the antics of professional examination takers. “This step was taken as a result of the huge applications received by the board aimed at perfecting fraudulent acts that had aided impersonation in the first instance. “It is to be noted that the board has in recent times been inundated with series of complaints bordering on change of name, state of origin, local government, gender, date of birth, phone number, email address and subject combination of candidates. “The board, in the course of its attempts to block all forms of examination malpractices discovered that one of the ways candidates employ for impersonation is to engage professional examination takers who register using the candidates’ names and afterwards apply for correction of such details along the lines listed above. “To address this, the board has resolved to revalidate all biometrics of candidates of candidates that have taken the board’s examinations fish out these impersonators and prosecute them along with their sponsors,” he said in the bulletin. He also said the board has discovered “series of pathetic situations that some elite schools put their candidates through.” Benjamin noted that these schools engage in group registration in order to make money, adding that this act distort the data of such candidates. “The public should be mindful of elite schools which exploit parents by collecting huge sums of money to register their students in group, more often at unauthorised centres,” he said. The Wife of Zamfara Governor, Hajiya Aisha Matawalle, has said that she will establish a Task Force to promote women empowerment and girl-child education in the state. Aisha disclosed this on Sunday while speaking with journalists in Gusau at a reception organised for her by ‘Initiative for Muslim Women Forum’ a Non-Governmental Organzation (NGO). She said the task force would comprise people of proven character whom would be charged with the responsibility of identifying vulnerable girls, women, and groups across the state who were in need of urgent care and support to improve their lives. “My NGO will quickly mobilise all that will be needed to ameliorate the condition or situation that such person or persons may be facing. “The NGO will largely focus on women and the girl-child, but this does not in any way mean that the boy-child will be left out, no, only that the girls are more disadvantaged, l know what it feels like having passed through such stages. “We will, within the resources available look for ways through which we can empower women even by approaching other organisations that are willing to embrace the initiative. “This is aimed at ensuring that once the mothers are empowered, the issue of street hawking by the girl-child will be highly minimised and the women will be encouraged to send their children to school. ’’Who knows, such a girl that is given this opportunity might become a leader tomorrow,” she said. The governor’s wife appealed to the well-to-do and groups in the state to support the initiative which would concentrate on the rural populace who were more in need of the intervention. Hajiya Hadiza Imam, Amira of the Forum, said the programme was organised to thank Allah for the new administration of the state, pray for the success of the leaders and advise them to be God-fearing while discharging their responsibilities. “We shall continue to support the government with prayers and advice so that the players can bring more dividends of democracy to the people of the state. “Already, the governor, Alhaji Bello Matawalle, has announced free education and free medical care for women and children in the state, this is a right decision coming at the right time, we pray for more of such to come,” the Amira said.
