Business / FCMB Informs Stakeholders, Says Its MD Adam Nuru Under Investigation by oaktvnigeria11: 9:20pm On Jan 03, 2021
FCMB informs stakeholders, says its MD Adam Nuru under investigation over alleged unethical conduct

The management of FCMB has broken their silence on the alleged affair between its Managing Director, Adam Nuru, and one of its former staff identified as Moyo Thomas.

One Mr Tunde Thomas (alias Tunde Gentle) had been legally married to Moyo Thomas, and it was generally believed then that the two children produced by the marriage were those of Mr Tunde.

But the report surfaced that the FCMB MD allegedly had an affair with Mrs Thomas, and the children belong to the bank MD.

It was reported that Moyo had informed her husband that she was leaving Nigeria for the United States with the kids only to inform him upon arrival that the children were not his but for the FCMB MD.

The news caused Mr Thomas to be down with a stroke and later cardiac arrest which led to his death.

The report has since stirred reactions and raised questions on the paternity fraud in Nigeria.

Following the controversy, FCMB, in an official statement said the Bank’s board of directors have begun an investigation of the allegation which it termed unethical.

It said even though the matter remains personal, the tragedy of the death of Mr Tunde Thomas and the allegations of unethical conduct, require the Bank’s board to conduct a review of what transpired.

“We are aware of several stories circulating across several media platforms about our Managing Director Adam Nuru, a former employee Ms Moyo Thomas and her deceased husband, Mr Tunde Thomas.

“While this is a personal matter, the tragedy of the death of Mr Tunde Thomas and the allegations of unethical conduct, require the Bank’s board to conduct a review of what transpired, any violations of our code of ethics and the adequacy of these code of conduct ethics

“ This will be done immediately,” the statement read.

The bank appealed to stakeholders to be patient with them as they conduct this review.

Politics / Attacking Kukah For Speaking Truth To Power Wrong, Says Muslim Coalition by oaktvnigeria11: 7:48am On Dec 30, 2020
Those vilifying the Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Archdiocese, Matthew Kukah for speaking against the current administration have been warned to desist from actions that could deplete the peace of the country.

The coalition of Nigerian Muslim Professionals, in a statement made available on Tuesday, said that Nigeria will be a great place if there were two or three persons like Kukah.

A statement signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Prof. Mohammed Inuwa, noted that Buhari may have meant well for the country but faulted the President in some actions taken by his administration which it said was not promoting unity.

The Coalition said instead of vilifying the cleric, it would be to the President’s best interests to take Bishop’s message as a wake-up call to adjust for the good of Nigeria.

It noted that promoting the interest of one region against others is not what a good leader is known for, adding that in as much it loves the president, the Coalition will want him to leave a legacy of a united Nigeria.

The Muslim coalition condemned in its entirety attacks trailing Kukah’s Christmas Day Message, where he bemoaned the state of the nation, warning that unless leaders sit up, Nigeria was heading towards a failed state.

Kukah had also accused President Buhari of piloting Nigeria into darkness in the message titled: “A Nation in Search of Vindication.”

He had emphasised the worsening state of insecurity in the country and berated the current federal administration of glaringly abandoning the nation’s extant federal character principles and rather promoting nepotism with impunity.

The development has been drawing criticisms from the President’s friends, political associates and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

However, the coalition commended Kukah for what they described as “his boldness to speak truth to power”, faulting those vilifying him.

The Nigerian Muslim Professionals took a swipe at those trolling the Bishop, saying they were doing it for their pecuniary gains and not the interest of the country.

It warned against twisting the message to mean the Bishop endorses coup, saying contrary to those promoting that insinuation, the revered Bishop was too learned to support such ignoble path to installing leadership, saying Nigerians with a conscience would not fall to the antics of those twisting the Bishop’s message for selfish reasons.

The group said having followed Bishop Kukah’s activities and preachings since the days of the military, it was convinced that not too many Nigerians took the interest of the country at heart like Bishop Kukah.

“Even during the military era where people dreaded the powers that be at the time, Bishop Kukah, who was then a Catholic priest spoke truth to those at the helm of affairs without fear or favour. He has shown through his actions all the years that he is a true son of Nigeria in particular and Africa in general,” the group stated.

“We should support him for being bold enough to come out to speak what many Nigerians know is the truth but afraid to speak out for fear of the leadership.

“While we must admit that President Muhammad Buhari means well for the nation, we must say that most people in his government are grossly incompetent and don’t deserve to stay around power even in an uncivilized space,” the group stated.

The group said it would not shy away from the truth even though most of the president’s actions drawing criticisms were in favour of its region.

It flayed the glaring marginalisation of the Igbos in every facet of national life, saying the development was not promoting national cohesion which nationalists that laid down their lives for the country’s independence wanted.

“There’s nothing wrong with Bishop Kukah’s statement in the actual sense. Some regions particularly the South East has been marginalized in successive governments, and the administration of President Muhammad Buhari came and amplified it with the worst,” it added.

It described those attacking Kukah as faceless individuals who were being promoted by selfish people in leadership to silence the truth.

” We strongly condemn the wrong approach taken to respond to a message by a patriotic Nigerian by these incompetent people working to derail the president’s agenda.

“It is completely wrong to be attacking Bishop Kukah by some faceless sponsored groups. Bishop Kukah did not in any way call for a coup, he is too learned to do that.

“We stand completely with Bishop Kukah, this government must be fair to all Nigerians irrespective of tribe and religion,” it said.

Politics / Buhari’s 2020 Christmas Message To Nigerians by oaktvnigeria11: 2:43pm On Dec 25, 2020
I felicitate with our Christian brothers and sisters in particular and all Nigerians in general on this joyous occasion of Christmas 2020, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.

In Christendom, Christmas season represents joy, peace, hope, love, goodwill and imminent salvation. These worthy values which Jesus’ Advent symbolize, are very much needed in our country at this time when we are confronted with diverse challenges like the rising spate of armed banditry, kidnappings, insurgency, economic recession and upsurge of COVID-19 infections.

I wish to, therefore, enjoin fellow compatriots to appropriate the hope that comes with Christmas and reinvest trust in this Administration’s determination and unwavering commitment to restore peace, security and prosperity to our dear country.

Under my watch, the Federal Government will continue to provide the needed support within available resources to the gallant members of our armed forces and security agencies as they confront threats to our citizens. While I commend them for their efforts so far, I urge them to do more to checkmate increasing incidents of security threats especially in the northern parts of the country as well as the entire nation in varying degrees. Their display of tact, camaraderie, and expertise that led to the recent return of abducted schoolboys of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, will remain a milestone in the annals of the country.

For me, providing security for all residents in the country remains an article of faith. It formed a vital segment of this Administration’s three-point agenda right from inception, and we must follow through with it.

I cannot in good conscience shirk this cardinal responsibility to secure lives and property. I feel pained each time a breach of peace and security occurs in any part of the nation. I am even more distressed when our youths, especially school children, are the targets and victims of mindless and malevolent elements in the society. As a parent, I share the emotional torture and agony parents and guardians go through whenever their children and wards fall into the cruel hands of these enemies of decency and good society.

I plead with fellow compatriots to give our military and other security agencies more time, cooperation and support by volunteering credible intelligence/information on activities of armed bandits, insurgents and other criminal elements within their communities in order to put an end to this blight on our security landscape.

To be sure, the problems are beyond the simplistic options being bandied around. We shall remain focused on following the complex, multi-dimensional route to reducing the incidents of insecurity to the barest minimum. Our people must be free to live and move without let or hindrance. This is crucial not only to enthroning an atmosphere of calm and social cohesion, but for the economy to grow.

Let us use this season of goodwill and joy to renew our faith in the ability of this Administration to make a lasting difference in the lives of our hard-working people. Our Social Intervention measures and other economic policies are already yielding positive results even at modest rates.

We shall deliberately target our youths so that they will not fall into the trap of unpatriotic elements to foment social disobedience leading to avoidable loss of lives and property.

Let me reiterate that while the right to peaceful association and protest is guaranteed under our laws, this Administration will not fold its arms and watch protests however well-intended, degenerate into wanton killings of law enforcement and other security personnel as well as destruction of private and national assets.

It is gladdening to note that the various schemes and components of the Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP) are being implemented faithfully to support micro-small businesses. I am particularly delighted that artisans, small-time transporters, traders and farmers are the main beneficiaries as we continue to provide safety nets to the most vulnerable members of our society as well as business owners to mitigate the harsh economic environment occasioned by COVID-19.

In spite of dwindling national revenue worsened by the pandemic, we will do all that is required to fully implement the 2021 Budget of Economic Recovery and Resilience. We are optimistic that all things being equal, we should be able to exit recession at the shortest possible time.

There is every indication that our country is already experiencing a second wave of COVID-19 infection. As we celebrate Christmas with families and friends, I urge all citizens and residents to adhere strictly to the non-pharmaceutical prevention guidelines of regular hand-washing, wearing masks and social/physical distancing with a view to mitigating the spread of this devastating virus. While national and state institutions are trying their best, we must take individual responsibility and resist the strong temptation of compliance-fatigue by following the recommended protocols put in place by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and beat the ravaging pandemic.

I have absolute confidence in the spirit of resilience of our people to do the needful and remain vigilant even as this festive season witnesses increased travels and celebrations. Staying alive to enjoy future festivals should be the watchword.

I wish all Nigerians divine protection and Merry Christmas.

Muhammadu Buhari

Travel / COVID-19: Nigeria Lists New Rules For UK, South Africa Passengers by oaktvnigeria11: 10:40am On Dec 25, 2020
The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has announced new travel rules for passengers coming into Nigeria from South Africa and the UK where new variants of the virus have been discovered.

The National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr Sani Aliyu made the announcement on Thursday in Abuja, during a media briefing.

Aliyu said effective from Monday, all passengers coming into the country from the UK and South Africa on direct flights must use the Nigerian International Travel Portal to register.

They are to also fill in the health questionnaire and must upload a negative COVID-19, polymerase chain reaction, (PCR) result with a validity of not more than five days.

He added that travellers must pay for a COVID-19 PCR test at day seven of arrival in the country without which they would not be allowed to board the flights.

The coordinator also said a special register would be opened at the airports for passengers from these two countries specifically to track and ensure they presented themselves for the COVID-19 test on day seven.

He said there would be sanctions on passengers that presented fake PRC results.

“We’ll continue to be concerned about the emergence of the new variant coronavirus in the UK and additional mutate that was described coming from South Africa.

“The system for travels in terms of ensuring the safety of our citizens and preventing the importation of cases in the country is one of the most strict.

“We are one of the few countries that do double testing, that has a travel portal where you can go in and enter your details including your health questionnaire and pay for a test.

“Specifically, for the UK and South Africa, the PTF has met and we have decided that additional measures will be required to ensure the safety of our citizens.

“So effective from 00 hours on Monday, Dec. 28, all passengers coming into the country from the UK and South Africa on direct flights, must use the Nigerian International Travel Portal to register.

“Fill in the health questionnaire and must upload a negative COVID-19 PCR result with a validity of not more than five days and must pay for a COVID PCR test at day seven of arrival in-country.

“When you are leaving the UK or South Africa, you need two documents that you have to present to the airlines.

“The first document is a negative COVID-19 PCR result, second is a permit to travel document, which we use to refer to as the QR code.

“The only way you can get the permit to travel on the travel portal is by filling in your health questionnaire electronically, uploading your PCR result and paying for the day seven test.

“If you do not present permit travel or you cannot present a travel permit, the airlines are being directed not to board.

“So if you are coming into Nigeria from the UK and South Africa, it is in your best interest to familiarise yourself with the Nigerian International Travel Portal and make sure that you put in your health details.

“Upload your PCR result that has to be negative and you pay for a day seven test upon arrival in Nigeria.

“The second enforcement that we will have has to do with the seven-day self-isolation upon arrival in the country. We had a lot of debates on if we should institute mandatory quarantine when the people arrive.

“We have decided that when you arrive, we will open a special register for all passengers arriving from these two countries.

“We will have enhanced surveillance where these passengers will be contacted after they have arrived home, we will be checking on them to see if they are having any symptoms.

“But more importantly, we expect these passengers by day seven to unfailing go for their COVID-19 PCR test which they must have before boarding the aircraft.

“We have already mentioned right from September when we opened up International airspace that there will be penalties for not abiding by the protocols.

“President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday approved that from now on particularly for those coming from the UK and South Africa, we will pay special attention to these flights.

“If you do not do your day seven tests by day 10, you will automatically go into the suspension list. Your travel document – passport will be suspended for a minimum period of six months.

“If you carry a foreign passport with a visa, we will revoke your visa. And because it is easier to track a smaller group of persons than a larger group of passengers.

“That has always been our challenge, we are now able to enforce this especially for passengers from the UK and South Africa until further notice.

“In addition to that, over this weekend, we are going to publish the list of 100 Nigerian passport numbers that we have for six months.

“We have already contacted these passengers and we have confirmed that they have not done a COVID -19 PCR test. We will not be publishing names, but the passport numbers.

“From now on, people that are travelling must abide by our protocols, there will be repercussions if you don’t. There will be penalties.

“In addition to this, we will also be instituting the same penalties for people presenting fake COVID-19 PCR results at our airports on exiting or on arrival.

“For those that are exiting, we have a code that we have developed and we are asking the airlines to start using which will entail entering the code for every result into our website that will tell you whether the result is fake or not.

“So, please do not buy or use the fake result, you are putting others at risks if you do so,” he said.

Politics / Tinubu Has Fought And Won Numerous Battles For Yoruba Nation, Bakare Says by oaktvnigeria11: 1:07pm On Dec 24, 2020
The serving overseer of Citadel Global Community Church, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has lambasted Yoruba leaders who are not comfortable with the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Tinubu becoming Nigeria President.

According to the cleric, God does not need anyone’s permission to put the former Lagos State Governor in a hall of fame.

Bakare stated this while addressing his congregation at his Lagos church, on the topic, ‘An Idle Man’s Brain Is The Devil’s Workshop.’

Bakare said that those who have scores to settle about Tinubu’s rise should “carry their stone.”

“I have a word for some Yoruba people whose stock in trade is nothing but a rancorous noise characterised by bitterness and resentment about the ancestry of the former two-term governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Carry your stone. I have a word for those Yoruba rancorous elements, noisemakers who have not achieved much as Asiwaju Tinubu has achieved, but are always querying and worrying themselves about his ancestry,” he said.

The preacher added that those who are envious of Mr Tinubu and those who desire to take his power slot should “stop their useless talk about him, and busy themselves with what can add value to society.”

Bakare had expressed hope of becoming Nigeria’s President after President Buhari.

The clergyman, who has never hidden his aspiration to become president, said in clear terms that he will succeed Buhari come 2023.

Politics / Security And Economy Have Collapsed Under Your Watch – Wike Tells APC Governors by oaktvnigeria11: 9:09am On Dec 24, 2020
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has called on All Progressives Congress (APC) governors to own up to the reality of the Federal Government’s failure.

Governor Wike said the APC-led Federal Government promised to offer better governance that would ensure the safety of lives and property of the citizens but has failed to fulfil its promise.

The governor made the assertion at the inauguration ceremony organised to open for public use two strategic roads – Woji and Obagi, in GRA Phase 2 in Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas, which was performed by Oyo State Governor, Oluseyi Makinde, yesterday.

He said virtually everything has collapsed in the country under the APC-led Federal Government. He said if Nigeria is truly a democratic country, nobody would be a proud member of APC anymore.

“I hear the Progressives Governors’ Forum saying there is insecurity. Who is responsible? They should come out openly and say the party in power has failed. Nigerians gave a mandate to APC at the Federal Government level and, therefore, they must own up that they have failed Nigerians.

“Everything has collapsed in the country. Security has collapsed. The economy has collapsed. There is nothing working in the country. Today, all over Nigeria, there is insecurity everywhere.

“The other day, in Katsina State, they took about 400. The next day, they said they took 84. Now, again, they said they have taken a village head, the wife and 14 people in Katsina State.

“When there was a problem in this state (Rivers), about the level of kidnapping, I shouted, but nobody listened to us. They said it was politics and that we were killing APC people. I said when you introduce politics to security the consequences will be great.

“Now, it is everywhere. Until they come to apologise to Rivers State that they are sorry for what they have done to us, then, God will forgive all of them,” Wike said.

The governor further said he has not disappointed Rivers people who gave him their mandate to improve the quality of living in the state, improve infrastructure, guarantee the security of lives and property.

According to him, he is not tired serving the state, and when he eventually leaves office, he could confidently walk on the streets without security protection because he has served the people well.

“We are proud because we can come out and say to the people of Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor local governments this is what PDP has done for you by the projects carried out in these two local governments.

“Also, we can go to other local governments and say look, vote for us. If they ask us why do you say we should vote for you, we will show proofs.

“Very soon, we will go to them and we will be able to tell them, yes, this is what we have done, therefore, having done this, if you vote for us again, there is the likelihood we will do more,” Wike said.

He enjoined owners of business places and other investors in the state to continue to pay their tax to enable the government to provide more quality projects.

Makinde said with the evidence of the performance of Governor Wike, it would be difficult to convince Rivers people to abandon PDP for another party.

He said development projects were an integral part of democracy because it is used to measure the level of progress a society makes under such democratic leadership and the Wike-led government has committed to the task.

“Indeed, all right-minded people like to identify with progress irrespective of their personal feeling towards the initiator. Development is a big part of our democracy and every project counts towards the overall progress of the nation.

“We are blessed to be leaders at this point of Nigeria’s history where there seems to be a reawakening of political consciousness, especially among the young people,” he said

The Department of State Services (DSS) has alerted Nigerians about plans by some criminal elements to carry out violent attacks on critical infrastructure, places of worship, recreational centres and other public places during the yuletide seasons.

It said the planned dastardly acts are to be executed through the use of explosives, suicide bombing, and other dangerous weapons.

The DSS spokesperson, Dr Peter Afunanya, said the objective of the attack is to create a general sense of fear among the people and subsequently undermine the Government.

He, however, assured Nigerians that security forces had taken measures to thwart the plot.

He said: “The objective is to create a general sense of fear among the people and subsequently undermine the Government.

Politics / SGF: My Four Children Tested Positive For COVID-19 by oaktvnigeria11: 1:07pm On Dec 22, 2020
Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), says his four children have tested positive for coronavirus.

Mustapha, who is the chairman of the presidential task force on COVID-19, announced this during a media briefing in Abuja on Monday.

He also said a family member who is one-year-old tested positive for the virus.

The SGF had gone into isolation last week after he was exposed to the virus.

He said while he and his wife tested negative for the virus, his children are currently receiving treatment.

“The first test we ran, the result came back with six members within my household testing positive. The second test confirmed another three. From the month of March to November, we are being confronted with a figure of nine. It was quite a traumatic experience,” he said.

“My wife and I consistently tested negative but members of the household were infected. The last one, it was a nightmare. I was not infected but the truth about it, the agony of having members of your household… I am a father of four. All my four kids were infected.

“So, the agony that you go through even as a father, as a parent. A lot of you here are parents, so you need to do everything you can to ensure that you keep yourself and members of your family safe.”

Mustapha added that the spike in coronavirus cases is a result of the consequences of certain occurrences in the last few weeks such as the increase in social gatherings and disregard for health protocols.

“A lot of discussions is still going on around the calls for the restriction of international travels due to the discovery of new strains of the virus in certain countries,” he said.

“The PTF, aviation, and health authorities including the WHO is assessing the situation closely and would take a position as soon as a cogent scientific basis are established.”

Politics / Zulum Condemns Attack On Borno Travellers, Says Army Has Failed by oaktvnigeria11: 11:05am On Dec 22, 2020
Borno Governor, Babagana Zulum, has expressed his frustration over the incessant attacks on travellers and daily abduction of civilians by Boko Haram on the only major road in the state.

Zulum spoke in Jarkana on Maiduguri-Damaturu Road where Boko Haram had ambushed, shot and abducted some commuters last week.

On Friday, Boko Haram insurgents abducted 35 commuters near Garin Kuturu in Jakana on Damaturu-Maiduguri Road. Attacks on the road have remained almost on daily basis with scores of people killed or abducted.

Speaking when he visited the location of the attack, Zulum said the majority of the attacks, within the last two years, happened between Auno and Jakana, a distance of about 20 kilometres.

He said he had, in the past, praised the military as moral booster to commanders and troops at the frontline but was disappointed the military failed to secure the people within a radius of 20 kilometres.

“I have had occasions to defend the Nigerian military in order to boost the morale of commanders and their troops at the frontlines because I know the true picture of things. However, I am really disappointed that despite all support from both the Federal Government and from us in Borno State, our military is failing to secure an area of 20 kilometres, which is the distance between Auno and Jarkana…So, if the military cannot secure 20 kilometres, how can they keep us with the hope they will defeat the Boko Haram?” he asked.

The governor also berated the special police team, Rapid Response Squad, established and funded by the state government to respond to such attacks in and around the capital as well as the major highway, a distance of about 80 kilometres. He said they have all failed to protect the people.

“We drove from Maiduguri to Jarkana here with all of you. We did not see soldiers on the road. We did not see even our own rapid response squad on this road and they were trained, employed, kitted and paid to protect Nigerians within the areas of their operations and these Nigerians, including travellers plying this busy and important road,” he said.

He assured the communities along the road that he would soon call a security meeting to review the situation on the highway and halt incessant attacks, killings and abductions of people by Boko Haram.

Buhari not leading from the front- PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP), yesterday, said President Muhammadu Buhari has not kept to his promise to lead from the front in the war against insurgency.

The PDP in a statement by Kola Ologbondiyan, accused the president of receding to the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock.

The party also berated the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the security challenges plaguing the country, saying the ruling party has allegedly failed to provide a governance strategy for the present administration.

Meanwhile, House of Representatives has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to release N3 billion for the immediate commencement of local production of firearms and ammunition to combat insecurity in the country.

The House said the amount should be released to Defence Industries Corporation (DICON), Kaduna, and the National Metallurgical Development Centre (NMDC), Jos to produce arms locally.

The resolution was sequel to the unanimous adoption of a motion by Ibrahim Halims at the plenary, yesterday, in Abuja.

Moving the motion earlier, Halims identified insecurity as the greatest challenge facing the country, saying parliament needed to come up with innovative legislative input to check it because of its negative effects on the socio-economic well-being of the country.

Halims said such input had become imperative to enable the executive arm of government to surmount the daunting challenge, especially given the fact that efforts by the government to import arms and ammunition from some western countries were often unsuccessful.

Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila mandated the Committee on Defence to coordinate the agencies of government involved and ensure compliance.

In a related development, Governors of the North Central states have appealed to the Federal Government to support the zone in its ongoing digital technology projects and other security preventive measures to fight criminality in the zone. The appeal, which formed part of the communique released at the end of a meeting of the North Central states’ governors in Makurdi, Benue State capital, yesterday, was chaired by Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello. It harped on the need for member states to collaborate in the provision of security equipment and joint security operations. The governors also advocated the establishment of military camps or training grounds in forests to block hoodlums’ movement, suggesting that the military units should be infantry heavy with adequate support weapons. They called for the resuscitation of peace and security committees at the local government levels to enhance quick decision on insecurity, crime prevention and detection.
