Crime / What We Know So Far About The Attempted Bank Robbery At Lagere - OAU Peeps by OAUPeeps: 2:54pm On Nov 19, 2018
It was an unusual and tense atmosphere earlier today at the surbub area of the ancient town of Ile Ife - Lagere, as suspected armed robbers shot sporadically into the air, in what seems to be an attempt to rob banks in the area. Afterwards, the intervention of the Nigerian police force, Ile-Ife command foiled the attempt, the Police claims.

In a phone conversation with OAU Peeps News Agency, Funsho Adegboye, the Ife Area Commander said it was just an attempted robbery.

"There was no attack, it was an attempted robbery based on the information we got from the members of the public which is highly commendable," the Area Commander told us.

"As we got the information, we alerted our officers, we deployed them and we are able to pursue them. On sighting the Police, there was an open fire, in which one of the robbers sustained injury. We are able to dislodge them and we impounded the Toyota Sienna vehicle they brought," he added.

Laying to rest the insinuation that some banks in the area were attacked, a staff of Fidelity Bank who does not want his name in the print because he was not authorised to speak on the development said the bank was not attacked.

Reiterating this, the Ife Area commander confirmed no bank was attacked. He said "the quick intervention of the Police and quick reinforcement of the commissioner of police from Osogbo prevented what could have been a robbery attack. You know banks are concentrated in one area, so they were caught met with resistenace between Diamond and Fidelity banks."

The Police claimed that one of the suspected robbers sustained injury during the gunshot exchange.

The commander also noted that no casualty was recorded as no police officer was either injured or shot.

OAU Peeps also understands through investigation that the suspected robbers earlier lauched an attack around Damico Area, close to campus gate, of which the commander confirmed.

Accounts from eye witnesses who spoke with OAU Peeps confirmed there were gunshots and the suspected robbers later escaped through the Akarabata area of Modakeke town.

The youths are angry.
They are protesting irresponsible killing of one of them yesterday.

It was gathered that the SARS officer was spraying bullet before the bullet mistakenly met Nafiu who was in an anniversary.
Without any provocation, the members of disbanded SARS Operatives brought down the life of Babatunde Nafiu, the son of a prominent politician in Iwoland, Alhaji Nafiu popularly called Adarsult of Ileogbo. He is a student of Polytechnic, Iree.

The angry youths av brought down the buildings inside the Iwo Area Police Command which house the SARS Office and set it on fire.

The attempt by Oluwo of Iwoland Oba Adewale Akanbi to plead with the protesting Youths, was met with stiff resistance.

The Kabiyesi had to leave when the situation was becoming tensed

How We Lost Him Due To JOHESU Strike and Inexperienced Health Personnels

HOW IT HAPPENED.
Its a long story, a long sad story. On Monday 14th of May 2018, I just arrived campus from home. While I was in my faculty(pharmacy) catching up with some folks , I received the late Doyen's call . His voice was pale and he told me he was in the school's health center that he needed me to get some stuffs for him. I had just bought them when he called again to inform me he has being rushed to the Obafemi Awolowo Univeristy Teaching Hospital. So i just had to stay where i was(Students Union Building) so the ambulance could pick me up. When i saw him , he looked very weak and he had jaundice in the eyes and skin. He complained of abdominal pain, vomiting , diarrhea, and hematuria.
We(myself and the nurse at the university health centre) had to carry him to the doctors because he had become very weak. The doctors at the hematology clinic of the teaching hospital where he was carried to on seeing him recognized him as he has been regularly attended their clinic and suggested he was carried to SDA(Seventh Day Adventist Hospital) due to the present JOHESU strike and the fact that he was very dehydrated. However, they examined his vital signs and asked a whole lot of questions about his condition and the drugs he was on, so they wrote a very long profile on his condition to help the doctors at the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital before he will be transferred. Meanwhile, a gastroenterologist was fetched and he also examined him meticulously so he wrote down his observations too. They(the hematologist and gastroenterologist) both wrote letters of referral addressing any consultant available at Seventh Day Adventist Hospital. All of that took more than an hour at the OAUTHC and the guy was already complaining that the pain was getting more intense. He was eventually released and was returned to the ambulance. By that time his brother's female friend, Taofeeq already joined us.
When we got to Seventh Day Adventist, he was already in serious pain. First off, the casualty ward was overcrowded and smelt of death. Secondly, his NHIS was rejected. So we had to pay an emergency bill of #2000 and also get some infusions and materials. I was directed to where to pay but they were not going to attend to him until i made the payment. On getting there, the queue was far longer than i thought, so the payment and all took more than 30 minutes. To my utmost shock, the materials to be bought include -IV set, 2 500ml (Normal saline, 5%Dextrose Saline, Ringer's lactate), needle and syringe , and some pairs of gloves amounted to be #5,210 which is overly expensive being conversant with the prices of these stuffs in pharmacies being a pharmacy student. I paid the emergency bill so he would be attended and eventually we were able to afford the infusions. However, the system of procuring drugs was irritatingly bureaucratic and took too much time. When the infusion was brought, one of the nurses who was one of the only 2 people who seemed to care about his state started him on the infusion. Meanwhile, a student doctor had already circled out the tests to be carried out , about 10 of them which amounted to be #15,060. At that time, the nurse from the health centre had to leave because she had to return the school ambulance So it was clearly we had to wait for his dad who was already coming from ibadan. I returned to the casualty ward and Late Abidoye Yusuf was already in tears complaining that no doctor would attend to him. I looked around to plead with the doctors(because there was only 1 doctor in that ward) to come check him. It was that time i was told another test had to be carried out first before the doctor would be able to attend to him. That sounded like nonsense to me as my friend was dying and NOBODY even took time to check the medical profile and letters sent by his doctors in OAUTHC.
The only thing i regret doing is not advising his dad to move him out of that hospital. When he came we paid the fee for the test and they did it in the lab. We were told to come back an hour later for the result. Some minutes later , our friend and colleague, Gafar arrived. It took no time for him to observe and complain about the flaws of the hospital. We went for the result and his PCV was 9%(meanwhile he had a blood transfusion a week before) and also the WBC count was about 48,000+ an extremely high value which indicated an infection. The doctor checked the result and ordered for 3pints of blood.
There was no donor but the people at the lab pointed to a man they called 'commercial donor'. He was going to sell screened blood to us. So we bought 2 pints, #10000 for the blood and #12000 for the screening. I don’t know if the doctor checked his history at any point but he ordered a nurse to start him on blood. The doctor left work about 5pm and only the student doctor was left in the ward. He was moved to a better ward later in the night, he had been asleep since evening. We stayed with him throughout the night while his dad left for his sister's place to get what he would need the next day. He woke up and he was stable, we talked and joked about some stuffs, then he ate. Only 30 minutes later, the abdominal pain returned and he didn’t leave until he vomited all he ate. Twice, we had heated discussions with the nurse on duty . The first was when he complained of joint pain, and she injected him with diclofenac. We told her he had not eaten throughout the day and ulcer was probably while he was on the hospital bed in the first place. The second was when he complained of itching after the blood was given, and the student doctor wrote a prescription of IM hydrocortisone, we told her she was supposed to exercise caution in administering immunodepressants in infections, yet he was eventually injected with it. I even went to the length of asking when a doctor would properly assess his condition and tell us what was wrong. They told us there would be a ward around by morning, and that we should give the doctors our complains that time. I waited till around 8am when the dad was back, there was no doctor. I had to leave to settle some things in school but my other friend Gafar waited till around 10:30 , yet no doctor. It was when i was back in the night that i was told the doctors came in the evening. They had reviewed his case, moved him to another ward, ordered 2 more pints of blood, some antibiotics and antacids .But yet, nothing was said about his state or what caused it. He was half asleep that time and only spoke briefly. I left , sadly that was the last time i was going to see him. In the night, i was told he was on oxygen and his stomach was swollen while he was continually given pentacozine and diclofenac injections at intervals.
Gafar's call woke me the next morning some minutes to 9am, that our friend was gone. I just stood expressionless for some minutes trying to understand the weight of that statement. I got to Seventh Day Adventist in no time and i saw the father in tears. While the clearance was done, we still had to pay #69,000 before the corpse would be released. That fueled enough anger in me, we paid them to kill him. It was insane!!!!!
It is a sad irony that the one (JOHESU) supposedly fighting for us took one of us. It is more sad that our hospitals are deathbeds and are filled with lackadaisical, inexperienced or incompetent hands. He had been in worse conditions and survived. Just in October He was diagnosed of Hepatitis B and Chronic Kidney Disease, yet he was sound and living fine due to proper treatment
Like i said, this is one long sad story. It’s a pity

By Farombi Oluwaseun

Today at the Ajebamidele High court, five Students of Obafemi Awolowo University have been charged to court today after opposing the eviction of students from Moremi hostel as earlier reported by OAU Peeps News Agency here

Speaking earlier with Journalists before the court proceedings, Honourable Omole Ibukun, one of the students suspended last year for participating in a protest, condemned the arrest of the students by the management. According to him, the act is to make silent the agitations of students against ant-students policies.

"They believe they can proceed with the eviction exercise by keeping those comrades in police detention." he added.

However, in a release obtained by OAU Peeps News Agency and signed by Babatunde Oyatokun, the Chief security Officer of the university said the students were arrested for alleged assault and harassment of the hall warden, Mrs Adeyemo, and other officers during the process of sending students out so as to embark on renovation of hostels.

"A student named Gbenga Oloniran led a group of students that invaded, harassed and assaulted the hall security assistant and held hostage of the warden of Moremi hall." The report read.

Mr. Babatunde further recommended in his release that the university management should look into the antecedents of the aforementioned students so as to make them face students disciplinary committee. He concluded that the case has been referred to the Nigeria Police ,ile-ife for further action of which led the case being referred to the Court of law by the Nigeria Police Force.

The apprehended students are Gbenga Oloruniran, a 400 level students of Geography; Olajide Ademola, a 500 level student of Electrical Electronics; Oyedeji Samson, 300 level student of Pharmacy; Jimoh Oladipupo, 300 level student of Biochemistry; and Adeniji John, 300 level student of Electrical Electronics Engineering.

Meanwhile at the court, protesting students and journalists were denied access to the court room by the Federal Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian Police team led by ASKME MOSES who was instructed by the Area Commander (AC) of the force.

After listening to both sides in the court proceedings, the judge granted each of the embattled students a bail of five hundred thousand naira only(500,000) with provision of two sureties who are civil servants level 11 and has their taxes paid up to date.

Speaking with our correspondent, one of the defense counsels of the arraigned students, Barrister Philip added that the bail application is the only step they can push before further court proceedings.

Afterwards, students protested outside the court premises against the bail terms by raising placards and chanting songs with the high impossibility of the arraigned students meeting the bail terms.

The case has however been adjourned till April 3,2017

Education / JAC Strike:OAU NASU Chairman Docked Over Assault Allegations by OAUPeeps: 6:49pm On Mar 08, 2018
By Uthman Samad

The Chairman of Non-Academic staffs of the Obafemi Awolowo university Comrade Woke Odewunmi was today in a Magistrate Court in Osun state over alleged assault Of Olarinde Olaide after being remanded on the 6th of March at Kosere Prisons in Ile-ife.

The Olarinde Olaide was allegedly mobbed and  assaulted by the union workers 'led by Wole Odewumi' while disrupting the examinations of the Post-graduate Students in the university during one the protests of the Non Teaching staff unions against the Earned allowance owed by the Federal Government.

After listening to both parties through their counsels, Justice F.I Omisade, the presiding Judge at the Magistrate Court located in Ile-Ife, Osun state granted the accused (OAU NASU Chairman) bail on self-recognizance.

The presiding Judge further stated that the condition of the bail includes providing two sureties, who are civil servants and have attained at least Level Ten according to the civil service commission ranking.

However, the judge during the proceedings, expressed his disappointment at the two parties and noted that a civil matter of that nature should have been settled in the university community and not dragged to court.

"It should not have degenerated up to this level", the Judge added.

Speaking with OAU Peeps News Agency, the defense counsel of the accused, Barrister S.T.A Raji, expressed his happiness, he said " this is just one of those normal court cases. We have been successful with the bail application."

Also, a female senior lecturer in the university, Kehinde Ajila, told our correspondent that the court case is being fueled by some of the university officers and it is aimed at frustrating the struggle of the aggrieved unions.

"Those professors, who we fought for the increment in their salaries are now those who want to frustrate the struggle for the payment of workers' allowance."- she added.

However, all effort to speak with the complainer, Olarinde Olaide, proved abortive as the lawyer denied our correspondent access to his client.

It will be recalled that the non teaching staff unions of Universities, comprising the Non Teaching Staff Union (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian University (SSANU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) have embarked on an indefinite strike action since last year against the Federal Government over an alleged disparity in the disbursement of Earned allowance to all the staff unions in Nigerian Universities with 89& allocated to ASUU and 11% allocated to the three above Unions.

The case has however been adjourned to 15th of March,2018

Education / OAU Begins Renovation Of Dilapidated Hostels by OAUPeeps: 6:52pm On Mar 06, 2018
The management of Obafemi Awolowo university Ile-Ife has commenced the renovation of Halls of residence in the institution.

Being one of the core Agenda among others of the Ogunbodede Administration to refurbish the aged halls of residence and put to good condition, the hired workers are seen in full force tiling and restructuring dilapidated structures in toilets of Annex block C and D of Fajuyi hall of residence of which signs are seen of work to start sooner on other blocks and likewise the main Blocks of the hall.

According to one of the contractors in Block C that spoke with OAU Peeps News Agency, he said he has come to take the measurement like 6 months ago & that he's just being called to start the work weeks ago, and they will ensure to make done the work as soon as possible.

It will be recalled that the administration of the former Acting Vice chancellor (Prof. Anthony Elujoba) of the institution also took some obvious measure to renovate the toilets in halls of residence and make water supply available during his tenure before the coming into office of Ogunbodede.

Before now, students have taken to social media to complain the devastating status of the great Ife halls of residence and poor infrastructure.

Report has it that the school management is making every possible means to decongest the hostel although the left organisation termed it as 'forceful eviction from hall of residence and outrightly to dehumanize the studentry as they are to go off campus, into the arms of insecurity.""

According to a pharmacy student of Fajuyi hall who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that " The management should have done this since to complement Elojoba's work but all the same we hope they finish this and improve the welfarism of student which shouldn't only be on renovation of hostel toilets alone but repainting and also renovation of the rooms also.

In an exclusive interview with OAU Peeps News Agency, the Dean Of Students Affairs, Prof. Aransi confirmed &stated that the management wants to decongest the hostel so as to improve the welfare conditions of all halls of residence which is affected by Overcrowding. He added that the renovation has been planned on a larger scale before freshers resume by April 3 but facing challenges with students not leaving the halls of residence for their various homes though there are some that can't be denied hostel access like finalists ,SIWEP & SIWESS students, pharmacy students presently taking their examination, and also Education students who are on TP.

He was however unhappy with some students in the halls who are careless to the extent of burning their rooms as it happened recently in Block 3 of Awolowo Hall. ""Imagine we are trying our possible best to renovate and put all hostels to proper look and some of our students are being careless to the extent of burning rooms It occured in moremi, Fajuyi and Awolowo hall. ""

He also stated categorically squatters won"t be allowed this coming session and if anyone is caught in the act, the squatter and the "landlord" will be expelled as the issue won"t be lightly at all again.

He concluded that those who do sell and buy bedspaces should retract from such and if caught, the buyer and the seller will smell the hot part of law.
