EducationRe: Petroleum Engineering Vs Mechanical Engineering by Obieflo247: 5:33pm On Feb 25
"Great question and I totally understand the confusion — everyone around you has a different opinion.

Here's the honest truth broken down:

Mechanical Engineering gives you broader options. You can work in manufacturing, oil & gas, construction, automotive, power, even move into project management. The scope is wide and you're not tied to one industry.

Petroleum Engineering pays higher starting salaries — especially if you land in the oil majors like Shell, TotalEnergies, Chevron. But your career is directly tied to the oil and gas industry, which means when oil prices crash or companies downsize, you feel it harder. Nigeria has seen this cycle multiple times.

My honest recommendation: If you're passionate about oil and gas specifically and can handle industry volatility, Petroleum. If you want flexibility and more career pathways, Mechanical.

But here's something most people won't tell you — whichever one you choose, the engineers getting the best opportunities right now are the ones who pair their engineering degree with a tech or digital skill. AutoCAD, Python for data analysis, IoT, even project management software. Employers are actively looking for this combination.

Since you're still preparing for JAMB, you actually have time on your side. Have you ever thought about picking up a tech skill alongside your studies? Even one solid skill like web development or data analysis changes your earning potential significantly when you eventually graduate.

There are some really good platforms built specifically for young Africans that make this practical and affordable. If you're open to it, I can point you in the right direction — it's something that genuinely helped me and people I've mentored."
