Youths Of Abia North Get Money And Free Vehicles Empowerment

The Abia State Government in a bid to rid the state of poverty and unemployment has empowered youths of Abia North central zone comprising of Bende ,Ohafia and Arochukwu local government area with vehicles and money.
At the ceremony which was held at Bende Local Government Headquarters, Governor Theodore Orji told reporters that the strategy was to impact lives and enhance livelihood of the state’s citizenry.
About 200 vehicles were distributed to the unemployed youths while two million Naira was given out to 13 graduates to start up a business of their own.
The vehicles and monetary package were given out free of charge with no condition attached except to use it as a means of livelihood.
To ascertain that the vehicles are in good shape, the governor collected one of the car keys and made his way to the driver’s seat to start up the engines and satisfied that all is in good condition, he went back to the podium amidst cheers and accolade from the youths.
The youth empowerment programme which has been described as a laudable project would ensure peace in the state, boost industrialisation and entrepreneurship among the youths thereby enhancing economic growth.
The beneficiaries thanked the government and assured him that the opportunity would go a long way to impact their lives. They also promised to help enhance the social economic development of the state.

Abia State Government Condemns Sun Newspapers

The attention of the Abia State government has been drawn to the malicious and misleading publication on Thursday July 17, 2014 edition of the SUN Newspapers which alleged that ” there is a disaffection among Abia citizens as well as within the Abia state’s chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party over the setting up of a 17- man panel by Governor T. A. Orji for selection of his successor.” According to the fictitious report which only exists in the imagination of the writer, the medium and their pay master, “the governor had appointed his kinsman, a sacked PDP National Chairman to head the selection panel to help him rubber- stamp his crony.”

The misleading report further said that the development “had already pitched the governor against the people of the state”, adding that some aggrieved party chieftains had also petitioned the Presidency and the National Working Committee of the party. The Governor wishes to categorically state that at no time has he set up any panel to select his successor as maliciously portrayed in the false publication. “I have always made it clear to all Abians that it is not in my powers to anoint my successor as that negates the principles of true democracy which I have serious respect for. For the benefit of doubt, the election of my successor will follow due process, equity and fairness according to the constitution of my party . “I wish to state for the umpteenth time that I have no anointed candidate for the 2015 governorship election in Abia State, nor do I intend to have. Any one parading himself as my anointed candidate is living in the past because already I have fought gallantly to decimate godfatherism and ‘mamacracy’ from Abia political landscape, and never again will it be resurrected.” In a release signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Charles Ajunwa, Governor Orji averred that no single individual had the right to anoint his successor, assuring that his successor will be a product of due process in tandem with the people’s choice and mandate. The release, therefore, urged all PDP governorship aspirants, members and leadership of the party, Abians as well as the general public to disregard the said publication as it is nothing but a bunch of falsehood and political propaganda “planted to cause disaffection in our peaceful party and state.”

Lawyer Hails S'Court Verdict On Sacked Council Officials

A Lagos based, lawyer and human right activist, Malachy Ugwummadu has hailed the Supreme Court for reversing the sack of 148 local government chairmen and councilors by Orji Uzor Kalu’s led administration in Abia State.

The verdict came eight years after they were unceremoniously kicked out of office, before the expiration of their statutory three-year tenure in 2006. During the unanimous decision penultimate Friday, while describing the sack as official recklessness, the court held that no state governor in Nigeria has the right to remove democratically elected local government officials.

The court ordered government to pay the affected officials their salaries and entitlement for the 23 months they were to stay in office. It also awarded N25, 000 as cost against the appellant and dismissed the appeal.

Ugwummadu, in an exclusive interview with The Guardian said the Supreme Court is the final arbiter on all legal disputations in Nigeria, no less on constitutional issues relating to the interplay of power relations/equations of the state.

He stated that Section 8 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, guarantees that the local governments shall be democratically elected, pre supposing that they owe their existence to the will of the people and not their respective state governors.

“Therefore the perennial incidence of arbitrary sack of council chairmen by state governors (where they even exist) has always been a misadventure in illegality and we are glad that the apex court in the land has so declared.

“You would recall that most of the governors have surreptitiously hidden under this lacuna to undermine the autonomy of the local councils in a constitutional federalism.”

It would be recalled that Kalu’s administration in June 2006, removed the council officials, when he reduced their tenure from three years to two, having amended the law through the State House of Assembly. The development forced the affected officials to seek redress in the law court.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri had earlier declared the dissolution as illegal, stating that the elected council chairmen and councilors had not concluded their tenure.

But shortly after the judgment was delivered, the then state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Ume Kalu, appealed against the judgment.

Give S-East federal presence as reparation—Gov Orji

ABIA State governor, Chief Theodore Orji, has said that any reparation to be paid to the South East geo-political zone to make up for civil war damages, should be done through significant federal presence in the region.

Orji, who stated this in a statement by his Special Adviser on Public Communication, Mr Ben Onyechere, said: ‘’In prevailing circumstance, what the Igbo need ultimately is the development that is backed up by the federal might .This desire is predicated on the premise of an earlier request of reparation from the federal government to the region in order to make up for the losses of the war. It is important not to gloss over the issue of infrastructural deficit confronting the Igbo for a long time now, for which reason we cannot subtract from our support for the federal government, led by President Jonathan who has shown an uncommon interest in the affairs of the South East.

‘’In other words the short cut to obtaining reparation is by maximally offering an unalloyed alignment with the federal government, the potentiality of our voting populace .

“As such, it is pertinent to say that no amount of struggle by any individual state can saturate the yawning gap for development, except on the basis of mortgaging the future of the state economy through huge borrowing, while pretending to be developing the state. Therefore, the South East is duty bound to explain to the Igbo the reason we must go with the federal authority.’’

Anyim warned the former Abia Governor against the illegal use of MON
The SouthEastNewsOnline has it on good authority that Orji Uzor Kalu who uses Member of Order of Nigeria (MON) was never honoured by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
To this end, the office of the SGF has written kalu to desist from using MON as failure to stop the act will attract sanctions. He was warned to stop parading himself as an honorary awardee of the Federal Government through a letter dated on the 15/7/2014 by the Office of the SGF.

Some members of staff at the SGF office revealed that thousands of petitions were received in the last couple of years against those parading themselves as recipients of National honours and among those involved is the former a governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu.

Some commentators on this issue had urged OUK to take Jamb or enroll with the Open University that President Obasanjo established for further education. Some people also frowned at OUK using MON to deceive people and while some stated that they never knew that OUK forged the MON.

ABIANS WON'T FORGET IN A HURRY

Without any waste of time I will recant what I witnessed at Onitsha when Orji Uzor Kalu was at present during a devotion ritually conducted by traders .In that day he a statement that he left a legacy in Abia state, and that it is there for all to see.I was shocked by that statement and I asked myself if he was even going haywire ,perhaps he is in a dreamland.
My question is ,what is the legacy you spoke of at Onitsha during that devotion day.Was it a legacy of failure that you found which another man is trying to erase totally. If that is the legacy you meant to say,I don't disagree with you ,because I could remember it as in your tenure that you benevolently share WHEEL BARROWS to market men and women as an empowerment kits.Well,am unflappable as to your argument about legacy ,all those are legacy depending the way one looks at it because if you can empower someone with wheel barrow ,literarily ,it is empowerment. But one thing is obvious ,that is rather huge mockery to humanity and governance.
I always feel uneasy when I see you sprout out from your comfort zone to parry political issues like a goal keeper in-between the sticks; you mesmerize your gullible audience as Messi mesmerizes a weak defense line. Was it that you bought them over with the money you stole from Abia state fund to enrich your self the more ,or that they believe you with tinkered mind ,or that you have blindfolded the tentative minds with your voodoo mannerism.I use to think you and ORO ,Rochas are alike but I see something which makes him even more better a dangerous politico than you are.You are not just tricky, rather you are a con man.You have made it to the top and we are all not against your success but to still stand and share your ego to the public as a successful leader and braggart as one who achieved an Indelible feat is what i consider a misplacement of judgement ,and discomfiting in the sense that you have little or no knowledge of what SUCCESS ,& LEADERSHIP means in the proper depiction. Please Chief OUK ,It is safe to urge you to look back to old days when you the governor ,try to measure your self-acclaimed feat. Then come back to us and tell us you failed us.By then we-the quick-witted Abians will show you what legacy achievement and success means. But in the absence of that, you are not telling us any truth.

Abia: Supreme Court indicts Uzor Kalu’s over his Sack of 148 LG Officials in 2006
Reprieve came the way of the 148 Local Government Chairmen and councilors sacked in 2006 by the government of Abia State, then led by Orji Uzor Kalu, as the Supreme Court last Friday in a unanimous decision by a seven-man panel, faulted their sack describing it as official recklessness.
It would be recalled that Kalu’s administration had sacked the local government official before the expiration of the statutory three- year tenure they were elected. Kalu, who then reduced the tenure of the local government officials from three to two defended action, having amended the law through the State House of Assembly. This development forced the affected local government officials to seek redress in the law court.
The apex court of the land, declared in its ruling that no governor possesses the right to remove any democratically elected local government officials from office.
The government was ordered by the court to pay the affected officials their salaries and entitlement for the 23 months they were to stay in office. The court awarded N25,000 as cost against the appellant and dismissed the appeal.
Commenting on the development, Mazi Kalu Ogbonna, regretted the turn of event, stating that the action by the then administration was part of its disposition to recklessness and arbitrariness, adding that such culture of high-handedness is no more the trend in the current Abia State government.

PoliticsUkwa/ngwa Leaders, Abia South PDP Commend T.A Orji. by obinalihe(op): 7:43pm On Jul 12, 2014
Ukwa/Ngwa Leaders, Abia South PDP Commend Orji.
Prominent political leaders from Ukwa/Ngwa area
of Abia State have commended Governor Theodore
Orji of Abia State for declaring that the
governorship seat of the state, will move to Abia
South Senatorial District, and not just Ukwa/Ngwa,
in 2015.
Orji, who at the beginning of his second term,
promised to handover to an Ngwa man, declared
last week, during the swearing-in of the newly
appointed Transition Committee chairmen for the
seventeen local government areas of the state in
Umuahia, that power will move to Abia South in
2015.
His words: “I am a product of rotation. If there was
no rotation I may not be governor today. I must
continue with rotation because power moved from
Abia-North to Abia-Central, and must go to South.
“It is incumbent on me because failure to do that
will be injustice to myself and my party. It is fair to
both God and man.”
Reacting to the development, a political leader of
Ukwa/Ngwa, Chief Emmanuel Adaelu said: "I want
to express my sincere thanks to our dear
Governor, Chief TA Orji, because he is a man of his
words.
"During his second missionary journey as
governor, we gave him our total support to ensure
his re-election in 2011, and he promised our
people that he will handover to an Ngwa man.
Since then, we have been waiting for him to make
this pronouncement, now he has made it
emphatically clear to Abians that power will move
to Abia South, and not just Ukwa/Ngwa in 2015.
"I am very happy and my people, both the Ngwa
people in Abia Central and the Ukwa/Ngwa people
in Abia South, are happy.
"Governor Orji is a man of equity, and we respect
him. I know that so many people have been putting
pressure on him, trying to dissuade him not to do
this, but he has done it right."
Adaelu added: "I am one of the early supporters of
PDP and our party supports the policy of zoning.
The former governor came from Abia North, the
present Governor, Chief TA Orji is from Abia
Central, therefore, it is imperative and justifiable in
compliance with the PDP policy that power moves
to Abia South in 2015.
"His declaration of support for Abia South is a
major step in actualising our quest for an Abia
governor from the Ngwa extraction."
Adaelu, who is from the Ngwa areas in Abia central
stressed that: "I was one of the people that
supported zoning among the three senatorial
districts in Abia State, and I insist on that
irrespective of the fact that I am from Abia Central.
Again I will not deny that fact that the movement
began from Abia north, moved to my senatorial
district, Abia Central, with our dear governor who
is on the saddle now, therefore equity and good
policy demands that we all support the movement
to Abia South in 2015, and that is what we will do."
On the issue of aspirants from outside Abia South,
Adaelu said that there is nothing wrong for
anybody to aspire, but stressed that: "At the right
time, the leaders of the people will take a stand
and whatever stand we take, will decide what will
happen.
"Anybody aspiring to be governor in 2015 from
Abia central or Abia north should know that it is the
turn of the Abia South to produce the governor for
us in 2015. Abia central cannot produce two
governors in succession that is why it should go to
Abia South that is what equity demands.
"We are pulling the bulks of people from Aba zone
to support whoever emerges. I am speaking the
minds of my people." Adaelu said.
Barrister Chibuike Nwokeukwu, another frontline
Ngwa political leader from Abia Central, also
commended Governor Orji, and said that political
leaders and traditional rulers in Ukwa/Ngwa are
already perfecting plans to summon all Ngwa
governorship aspirants to a meeting where the
aspirants will be advised on the need for a
consensus.
His words: "The agitation for power shift to Abia
South in 2015 is real, the declaration by Governor
TA Orji makes it more real. Being a man I know
whatever he says, within his competence,
Governor TA Orji will do it, I commend him for
what he has done. We are happy."
He continued: "The governor's declaration does
not mean that he has chosen a candidate, no, it is
the party that will choose the candidate.
"I also know the old saying that a tree does not
make a forest, but a tree can give an indication
where a forest should be."
He said that those who have indicated interest in
the governorship race are qualified, however he
cautions the aspirants to be mindful of the fact that
all of them will not be governor at once.
"Every one of them who has indicated interest to
be governor is qualified to be, but the truth about it
is that only one person will be governor at a time,
so all we have to do as leaders of the community,
is to invite these our sons and daughters that have
indicated interest for governorship and say to
them; ladies and gentlemen, this is time for us to
be reasonable about this thing."
In a related development, the Abia South PDP has
passed a vote of confidence on the Governor Orji,
and promised an unflinching support to his
administration.

PoliticsNew Tax Regime In Abia State Will End Tears And Sorrow--orji by obinalihe(op): 1:04pm On Jul 11, 2014
New tax regime in Abia will end tears and sorrow.

The new tax regime being put in place by the Abia State government is targeted at removing all forms of fraudulent practices that had bedeviled tax payment and collection in the past, Governor Theodore Orji has said. The governor, who stated this yesterday at the maiden Abia State Revenue Summit held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, said it was regrettable the more than 80 per cent of the taxes, levies and revenues collected went into private pockets, saying that with the new regime that would stop. He said what the revenue agents did was to get government approval to collect levies, taxes and revenues and then adopt all kinds of draconian method to collect them. The governor said their operations lacked human face, adding that the outcry it generated could no longer be ignored by the government. Governor Orji said though the government has to raise funds for its operations, it however, must be done taking into consideration the feelings of the people, calling on participants at the summit to generate a tax blueprint that would be acceptable and workable. “We want the taxes paid without grudging; it is not the intention of government to impose levies, but having given me your mandate, I have to ameliorate your suffering. “When I heard the cry of Abia people, especially from Aba and Umuahia, I responded immediately by stopping all forms of taxes and levies. “The people are right to agitate against the levies, fees and revenues, because they are too much.” Besides, government, according to the governor, needs revenue to develop the state. He appealed to the people to discard the tradition of tax evasion, which he said was common during the colonial era, saying that the revenue would be used to develop the state for the benefit of all. In his speech, the Finance Commissioner, Dr. Philips Nto, said government was investigating some subtreasuries in connection with revenue fraud, adding that with dwindling oil prices, government could no longer depend on allocations from Abuja. He said the summit became necessary so that stakeholders would be involved in the formulation of a workable tax policy for the state, adding that the ongoing reform also targets securing pension funds through e-payment.

Abia Governorship: Rotation Fair To Both God And Man – Orji

Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, has said there is no going back on rotation of the governorship seat of the state come 2015, which is based on senatorial districts, irrespective of pockets of opposition against the proposal in some quarters.

Prominent among the notable governorship aspirants outside Abia South, who aspire to succeed Gov. Orji in 2015 against the zoning formula, are the immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.), and an oil magnate, Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah.

But Orji, who insisted on the rotation policy on Tuesday in Umuahia, the state capital while swearing in two new commissioners, and 17 Transition Committee Chairmen for local governments, said it was based on equity and justice.

He described himself as a beneficiary of the system of rotation. The governor said, “I am a product of rotation. If there was no rotation, I may not be governor today. I must continue with rotation because power moved from Abia North to Central, and must go to South. “It is incumbent on me because failure to do that will be injustice to myself and my party. Even the President is also a product of rotation. The states around us are also clamouring for rotation. It is fair to both God and man”.

Gov. Orji, however, warned that zoning the exalted office would not amount to imposition of incompetent candidate, insisting that the process of producing his successor must be based strictly on merit. “Whoever will be governor will naturally come from God. My job is to provide a level playing ground for all contenders”, Orji said.

The governor added that election into the council administrations in the state would soon be held, declaring that the new Transition Committee Chairmen would be the last set of unelected people to pilot the affairs of councils in the state.

While calling on aspirants interested in council administration to brace up for the exercise, the governor charged the new appointees to shun corruption and greed, warning that he would not hesitate to wield the big stick against anyone found wanting. “We shall keep watch over you, and if power begins to intoxicate you, we will give you the antidote”, Orji warned, counseling the council bosses to ensure punctuality to office to attend to their people.

The governor also tasked the chairmen on prudent management of their Internally Generated Revenues, saying, “You must tell me how much you generate as IGR and I will tell you what to do with it”

Abia State Governor, Theodore Ahamefule Orji, has declared that he has no iota of regret over his continued support for President
Goodluck Jonathan, saying his support for the President is not cosmetic. The Governor popularly called Ochendo by his teeming loyalists, made the declaration on Friday in Umuahia when he received in audience the South East delegation of ‘Goodluck Support Groups’. He also called on the President to declare his intention to seek re- election in 2015. He said, “My support for Jonathan is total and not cosmetic, and we want him to make known his intention to run in 2015 because we will replicate the total support we gave him in 2011. ” Even though he has not declared it, I will not stop supporting him because I know that he has all it takes to fix Nigeria despite the daunting challenges.”
Orji admitted that Jonathan was currently faced with “a lot of problems, particularly insecurity” but
expressed faith that Jonathan would navigate Nigeria’s leadership voyage to a safe anchor. Speaking Earlier, leader of the delegation and National Director, Contact and Mobilisation of the group, Chief Perry Opara, said the group was in Umuahia to strategise on how to deliver the entire South-East to Jonathan as was the case in 2011 when he eventually declares interest to re- run.
Later in an interview with journalists, Opara said he would be disappointed if “Jonathan fails to seek
re- election”, adding that “the coast is clear for him to sweep the poll.”

and seventeen transition chairmen for
the Local Government Areas to join in
the developmental intentions of the
government. The ceremony took place at the Michael
Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia on Tuesday. The Governor urged the new transition
chairmen to work in tandem with the
aspirations of the administration, to impact
the lives of citizens in the rural areas and
ensure development in their communities. He hinted that this was the final set of
transition chairmen to run the Local
Government system because the next
people to be sworn in would be the elected
chairmen, stating that there would be a level
playing ground for those intending to run for the position. The Michael Okpara Auditorium was filled to its capacity with friends, family, well-wishers, as well as
supporters of the new commissioners and the seventeen local government transition chairmen as the
appointees simultaneously took the oath of office which empowered them to gainfully build and develop
the state. Bearing in mind that all eyes were focused on them to perform better, one of the newly appointed
commissioners promised that they would do their best in ensuring that dividends of democracy reach the
citizens. The transition chairmen were said to have been carefully considered in order not to create a vacuum in
the local government system and because of their antecedents and ability to work assiduously in the
improvement of the grassroots. They assume office with a guiding principle to perform excellently on their jobs and ensure that Abia
citizens are carried along in the developmental process of the state.

PoliticsGov T.A Orji Of Abia Has Said There Is No Going Back On Rotation Governorship by obinalihe(op): 12:59pm On Jul 02, 2014
Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State has said there is no going back on rotation of the governorship seat of the state in 2015, which is based on senatorial districts, irrespective of pockets of opposition against the proposal in some quarters.
Prominent among the notable governorship aspirants outside Abia South, who aspire to contest against the zoning formula, include the immediate Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.), and an oil magnate, Uche Ogah.

Orji, who made the declaration on Tuesday in Umuahia while swearing in two new commissioners, and 17 Transition Committee Chairmen for local governments, said his insistence on the principle of rotation was based on equity and justice.

Even the President is also a product of rotation . The states around us are also clamouring for rotation. It is fair to both God and man.”

Orji however said zoning the exalted office would not amount to imposition of incompetent candidate , insisting that the process of producing his successor must be based strictly on merit .

“Whoever will be governor will naturally come from God. My job is to provide a level playing ground for all contenders,” Orji said.

The governor added that election into the council administrations in the state would soon be held, declaring that the new Transition Committee Chairmen would be the last set of unelected people to pilot the affairs of councils in the state.

While calling on aspirants interested in council administration to brace for the exercise, Orji charged the appointees to shun corruption and greed, warning that he would not hesitate to fire anyone found wanting.

“We shall keep watch over you, and if power begins to intoxicate you, we will give you the antidote,” Orji warned, counseling the council bosses to ensure punctuality to office to attend to their people.

The governor also tasked the chairmen on prudent management of their Internally Generated Revenues, saying, “You must tell me how much you generate as IGR and I will tell you what to do with it.”
