Steps on How to Become a Nurse in UK from Nigeria
Get your international passport
You can apply for an international passport by going to the Nigerian Immigration Service. You will need a standard passport or epassport to travel to UK as a registered and certified nurse. International passports take about weeks or months to be ready.

Write IELTS/OET Exam
If you want to get a nursing job in the UK, you must write and pass IELTS exam. This is compulsory and required. You are expected to submit it during NMC registration and your visa application. IELTS which means International English Language Testing System, is an exam that proves your proficiency in English language.

To register for the exam, you will pay up to ₦80,000. Note that the minimum IELTS pass mark is 7 or at least 6.5 to qualify you for the nursing job in UK. The IELTS exam should be taken seriously so you need to prepare well for it.

Get verified by NMC, UK
The Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC), UK, needs to verify your qualification and licence as a nurse before you can get a nursing job in UK. Their aim of doing this is to ensure you are qualified for the job. What you should do is to open an account on the NMC portal and pay a verification fee.

Next step is to submit your nursing certificate, licence and birth certificate. You will also submit a letter requesting verification. All these documents must be up to date.

CBT Competence Test
You will be asked to write a computer based test after you are done with the requirements from NMC. The test covers all major areas of midwifery, nursing, learning disabilities. You need to be very prepared for this test.

There are only three attempts to write and pass the CBT Competence test.

Write the OSCE Test
The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a test you will write after being successful in the CBT Competence test. This test is written at only one centre in the UK. Because of the distance, most nurses write this test after they are through with preparations and get to UK.

You can get a six month visa to go to UK to write the OSCE test. The best thing is to secure a nursing job first before writing this exam. Your employer can sponsor you. Note that the sponsorship only covers the registration fee for the exam. Unless your sponsor can be kind enough to take care of your flight and accommodation.

You can write the exam again if you fail at the first attempt but you will pay a resit fee of £397.

Register with NMC, UK
After you have successfully passed the CBT competence test, you are to pay the NMC a registration fee of £153 and upload all documents that are required. Make sure to include the name and details of your medical regulator.

NMC will send a letter to your medical regulator for your health declaration. Make sure to check your portal always inorder to keep track of your progress with the process.

Find a Nursing Job
When you are done completing all that is required, you can now search for nursing jobs online. To help you with this, check sites like: apps.trac.jobs, jobs.nhs.uk, nurses.co.uk.

Make sure to read carefully about the eligibility criteria before applying. Also, update your CV so that it will attract job offers quickly.

Certificate of Sponsorship
After being offered the nursing job, your employer will give you a Certificate of Sponsorship serving as evidence that you can apply for a visa. The COS states your resumption date. If you have a spouse and/or a child, make sure your employer includes it in the COS.

Apply for a health and care visa. This will allow you stay in the UK for up to six years after which you can apply for permanent residency.
