KINDLY SHARE THIS STORY A worker holds a sketch by Nelson Mandela -- "The Cell Door, Robben Island" -- on April 26, 2019 in New York City. - The sketch will be offered at Bonhams Modern and Contemporary African Art sale in New York on May 2, 2019 with an estimate of $60,000-$90,000. (Photo by Johannes EISELE / AFP) / RESTRICTED TO EDITORIAL USE - MANDATORY MENTION OF THE ARTIST UPON PUBLICATION - TO ILLUSTRATE THE EVENT AS SPECIFIED IN THE CAPTION A drawing by late South African president Nelson Mandela of the door of his prison cell on Robben Island — where he was held for 18 years — sold on Thursday in New York for $112,575. “The Cell Door, Robben Island” — completed in 2002 by the Nobel peace laureate — exceeded the top end of the estimated range provided by Bonhams, which put its value at $60,000 to $90,000. The wax pastel crayon drawing shows a few bars of the cell door and a key in the lock, sketched in purple. The work is one of the few that Mandela — who was jailed for 27 years in total and inspired the struggle against apartheid — kept until his death in 2013. Mandela’s daughter Pumla Makaziwe Mandela previously had the work in her possession. South Africa’s first black president did a total of 20 to 25 drawings, according to Giles Peppiatt, the auction house’s director of modern African art. Some were reproduced as lithographs to raise money for the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Mandela was jailed from 1962 to 1990. He was held at Robben Island off Cape Town from 1964 to 1982. Mandela served as South African president from 1994 to 1999. Mandela’s drawing was one of six works that surpassed $100,000 at the sale of African art on Thursday. Another South African artist, Irma Stern (1894-1966), earned the highest price of the auction — $312,575 — for “Malay Girl,” a portrait from 1946. Niger Delta youths have issued a seven-day ultimatum to Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State to reopen the corporate headquarters of the Niger Delta Development Commission or risk an economic crippling protest in the state. The youths, under the aegis of the Consolidated Youths of Niger Delta and led by its National Coordinator, Frank Naday, on Thursday during a news conference in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, alleged that the office was sealed about a week ago over non-remittance of revenues due to the government of Rivers State. “From our findings and the information made available to us, it is clear that the commission has paid the backlog of revenues it owes the Rivers State Government. “We want to ask Rivers State Government to, as a matter of urgency, re-open the commission’s office complex to enable workers to gain access to their various offices. “Niger Delta Development Commission is bigger than Rivers State because it covers the Niger Delta region and not Rivers State alone. “We are aware that the Rivers State Government is trying hard to play politics with the commission because it feels threatened that the Prof. Nelson Brambaifa-led administration at the NDDC is doing tremendously well,” Naday said. He condemned the attitude of the governor, which he said was aimed at frustrating the efforts of the youths and appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene. Reacting, the Chairman of the Rivers State Internal Revenue Service, Adoage Norteh, explained that the matter on the ground had nothing to do with politics. Norteh said, “Tax matters have nothing to do with politics. As far as I am concerned, the governor has nothing to do with the sealing of the NDDC headquarters. The governor never told me to go there. It was the court that said I should lock it; and if the court says I should open it, it will be reopened. “I never asked him (governor) where or when not to go. I challenge NDDC to show one fact that it has undergone any successful audit. If the NDDC are playing politics with the matter, it is their headache, because I don’t belong to any political party.” Source :https://punchng.com/ndelta-youths-give-wike-seven-days-to-reopen-nddc-office/ |
A 56-year-old man, Clinton Kanu, has said he will demand a N20bn compensation for spending 27 years behind bars for a crime he did not commit. Kanu, who was sentenced to death in 1992 for murder, was freed by the Supreme Court on April 5, 2019. The Okigwe, Imo State-born consultant criminologist explained that though he made efforts to absolve himself from a gang-up that led to his incarceration, nobody was ready to listen to him until he was jailed. While in prison, Kanu lost his mother; coupled with the fact that he was not married, he said he fought loneliness. Kanu, who recounted the incident that led to his travail, said, “About 27 years ago, some people were accused of stealing a generator and fluorescent tubes; they were my in-laws. “After a court decided the case, we suddenly heard that somebody was killed in the compound where my sister married. I was arrested because those behind my ordeal thought I was trying to resolve a land dispute in favour of one person. “I was taken to the Okigwe Police Station and later transferred to Owerri, where I was charged to court in April 1992. I was detained in the Owerri prison. I was at the tribunal for seven years because those behind my ordeal included armed robbery to the case. They believed I was a strong man and wanted to tie me down. “They brought false witnesses to testify against me at the tribunal. I was later taken to a regular court where I was condemned to death. From Owerri, I was transferred to the Port Harcourt prison. At the Port Harcourt prison, I waited for many years for the hangman’s noose. “I went to the Appeal Court to appeal the case, but my lawyer messed it up. Then I decided to proceed to the Supreme Court, where after 27 years in prison, I was vindicated. I was detained for nothing for 27 years; I was discharged and acquitted on April 5, 2019.” Speaking to our correspondent on Saturday, Kanu argued that he would demand N20bn compensation from the Federal Government and his state (Imo State) for the damage done to his business. He also stated that he developed ill health due to the prison’s dirty environment, adding that with the help of his lawyer, he hoped to be well compensated. “It seems as if everything collapsed on my head; I don’t know where to start from. My head is jam-packed with thoughts and I need to ask God to direct me. I really need help. “I am considering asking for compensation from the Federal Government and my state. I want this legal parochialism and injustice to stop. “When you talk about the damage done to my business and to my health, due to the prison’s dirty environment, and a lot of other things that have gone wrong, if I put my losses in billions, I don’t think it is out of place. “The money is just to make me solve my problems and get back to normal life. I will ask for N20bn compensation,” Kanu said. He thanked his church and some relatives who had been feeding and accommodating him since he left prison last Tuesday. The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has attributed the misuse of firearms and extra-judicial killings by policemen to work-related stress and emotional conditions which disoriented their rationality. He has, therefore, directed police personnel to revert to the traditional eight-hour work shift from the current 12-hour daily shift. The directive, he said, was informed by the need to address “a major, age-long occupational stressor which long hours of duty engenders among personnel in the Nigeria Police Force and which occasions depression and abuse of power and other unprofessional conducts.” Speaking in Abuja on Thursday at the maiden Conference of Medical Officers and heads of medical facilities in the Nigeria Police Formations and Commands, Adamu stated that henceforth, no police officer should be made to perform any duty exceeding eight hours within a space of 24 hours unless there was a local or national emergency. He stated, “Arguments have been raised that the resonating incidents of misuse of firearms and other extra-judicial actions by police personnel often result directly from work-related stresses and emotional conditions which disorient their rationality. “In consideration of this, I have ordered that with immediate effect, the shift duty structure of the Nigeria Police which is currently a 12-hour, two-shift system should be reverted to the traditional eight hours, three-shift standard.” The IG tasked the medical officers to complement the leadership of the Nigeria Police by striving at all times to guarantee a healthy work-life balance and ensuring that police officers attained the highest possible level of health status that could prevent occupational health stress factors which manifest in fatigue, compromised immune system, heart diseases and high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, irritability, risk of substance abuse and emotional instability. He noted, “All of these, if not medically managed, could engender unprofessional reactions with fatal consequences to the affected police personnel and members of the public.” Additionally, the IG pointed out, the NPMS must start to put in place strategies and techniques including cognitive therapy and emotional intelligence models that can strengthen the stress management capacity and operational resilience of all personnel. Adamu further admonished the police medical department to engage in medical outreaches to communities, educational institutions, youths and children population and other challenged communities with a view to rendering professional medical services. Gunmen have killed three policemen and a community chief in Iriebe, in the Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State. The bandits also killed the younger brother of the paramount ruler of the community, Clinton Worenwu. A group of gunmen had raided the community on Wednesday with machetes and guns, threatening members of the Hausa community. Security operatives had engaged the hoodlums in a gun battle, during which two of the assailants were killed. In what looked like a reprisal, some members of the gang reinforced and attacked the community, killing two policemen and a chief. PUNCH Metro learnt that another policeman was shot dead by the gunmen on Thursday, bringing the number of slain cops to three. The paramount ruler of Iriebe community whose brother was killed, Jeremiah Worenwu, said there had been tension in the area for about a week after the police reported to him that some youths carted away police weapons. But the security situation, according to him, became worse when the police discovered a hideout filled with guns in the community. He said, “A few weeks back, some policemen called me to report that some hoodlums snatched their arms at a checkpoint at Abuja junction; the police said the men carried away three AK-47 rifles. “All this while, the police had been investigating. But yesterday (Wednesday), while I was in court over a community matter, I was told that some northerners had a disagreement with the Akwa Ibom people, which led to the Akwa Ibom indigenes going to report to the police. “When the police came, they discovered some weapons in abandoned government low-cost houses occupied by hoodlums. The building is also used by some northerners who deal in scraps in the community.” Jeremiah added that following the discovery, some armed men attacked the community and killed residents. “After the police discovered the weapons, they re-enforced. I saw policemen everywhere in the community around 5pm when I returned from the court. “By 7pm, I began to hear gunshots. People called me to say that two policemen were shot dead. I was inside the house with my family, but my younger brother, Clinton, was outside, observing movements with some other persons in front of our father’s compound. “It was this morning when I wanted to call for a stakeholders’ meeting to discuss the way forward that we learnt of his death. He was shot several times at close range. The community is in disarray; residents are moving out in large numbers. The markets are closed and business shut.” One of our correspondents, who visited the community, observed that security had been beefed up to forestall further breakdown of law and order. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, said three policemen were killed by the gunmen. He disclosed that 69 suspects who were arrested in connection with the killings had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation. Omoni said, “While two policemen were killed yesterday (Wednesday), one was killed today (Thursday). We have gone to inspect the scene and tell members of the public that there is no cause for alarm. “We have restored normalcy; people should go about their business and those that fled the community should return.” Source:https://punchng.com/gunmen-kill-three-policemen-community-chief-in-rivers/ |
