PoliticsPower Generation Slumps To 1,675MW After System Collapse by OddsIsland(op): 6:01am On Apr 18, 2019
The nation’s power generation fell to a record low on Tuesday following the collapse of the national grid on Monday night.

Data from the Nigeria Electricity System Operator, an arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, stood at 1,675MW as of 6.00 am on Tuesday.

“System disturbance: This is to announce that the grid experienced system collapse at 23:44hrs on 15th April. System restoration commenced immediately and has advanced. TCN management has commenced an investigation to ascertain the cause(s) of the collapse. Attendant discomfort is regretted,” the TCN said on its official Twitter handle.

The system operator put the nation’s installed generation capacity at 12,910.40MW; available capacity at 7,652.60MW; transmission wheeling capacity at 8,100MW; and the peak generation ever attained at 5,375MW.

The nation generates most of its electricity from gas-fired power plants, while output from hydropower plants makes up about 30 per cent of the total.

In February, the TCN announced that the national grid successfully transmitted a new power generation peak of 5,375MW on February 7, 2019, at 9 pm.

It said it was the first time that the grid had generated, transmitted and distributed such quantum of power, describing it as evidence of the success of the government’s policy on incremental power.

The TCN, which manages the national grid, is still fully owned and operated by the government.

The grid has continued to suffer system collapse over the years amid a lack of spinning reserve that is meant to forestall such occurrences.

Spinning reserve is the generation capacity that is online but unloaded and that can respond within 10 minutes to compensate for generation or transmission outages.

Out of the five power stations meant to provide spinning reserves, none had any actual reserve as of 6.00am on Thursday, with the contracted reserve put at 295 megawatts.

The power stations are Egbin, Delta, Olorunsogo NIPP, Geregu NIPP and Omotosho NIPP.

PoliticsEx-minister Loses Bid To Stop Bank From Seizing Property by OddsIsland(op): 6:09am On Apr 16, 2019

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday turned down a motion on notice seeking to stop Access Bank from taking over a property known as Etiebet’s Place in Ikeja, Lagos.

The property located on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way is owned by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Chief Don Etiebet, in the name of his firm, Obodex Nigeria Limited.

In a ruling on Monday, Justice A. Liman, refused Obodex’s plea to stop the execution of December 17, 2018 judgment of Justice Ibrahim Buba empowering Access Bank to take over the property.

The bank had sued the company for alleged indebtedness.

But the firm challenged the court jurisdiction to hear the suit.

But in his December 17, 2018 decision, Justice Buba dismissed the objection by Obodex and ruled in favour of Access Bank.

Pursuant to this, Access Bank took over Etiebet’s Place and appointed Mr Kunle Ogunba (SAN) as receiver/ manager to manage the property towards the recovery of the alleged debt.

Not pleased, Obodex filed an appeal as well as an application for a stay of execution.

In the application for a stay of execution filed through its lawyer, Mr Dele Adesina (SAN), Obodex sought an order restraining Kunle Ogunba (SAN) and his privies or assignees from “advertising or offering for sale, selling, mortgaging, transferring, alienating or otherwise interfering with the applicant’s equitable right of redemption on the property situated and lying at 21 Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja, Lagos, also known as Etiebet’s Place, pending the hearing and final determination of the applicant’s appeals”.

But Access Bank, through Ogunba, opposed Obodex’s application for a stay of execution.

PoliticsWorker’s Car Stolen On National Assembly Premises by OddsIsland(op): 10:37am On Apr 15, 2019
A Honda Accord car belonging to a worker at the National Assembly was stolen from the premises during work hours on Friday.

The victim, Mr Mathias Obaje, of the Legislative Scrutiny Department, Directorate of the House of Representatives, narrated his ordeal to Northern City News on the telephone on Saturday.

Obaje, who is aspiring for the position of Vice-Chairman of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, said, “Yesterday (Friday), my car was stolen. I parked behind the Malima Restaurant around 9am and I locked the car properly. It was the day for debate and manifesto. After our presentations, I came out around 4.45pm and I did not see the car.

“I went to the Crime Office at the National Assembly; from there, we proceeded to the DPO’s office. I gave them the particulars and details of the vehicle. They said they were going to investigate it.”

Asked if the police had given any update on the crime since it was reported, Obaje said, “No.”

He explained that the stolen vehicle was a blue Honda Accord 1998 model with chassis number IHGCD5639VAO39155.

Obaje said, “That same car was also robbed of its battery before it was eventually stolen on Friday. At the reconstructed car park (directly behind the complex, which shares a fence with the Presidential Villa), the battery was stolen in August 2017.

“I feel bad and insecure that if such things could be happening here, that is to say that the entire premises is not safe. I will also advise the security agencies and the management of the complex to introduce tallies, which should be issued to motorists going in and retrieved from them when going out.”
