Obaseki Tasks Presidential Campaign Council On 1m Votes For Buhari’s Re-Election, As President Visits Benin Thursday

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has tasked members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council to work towards securing one million votes for President Muhammadu Buhari’s reelection in the February 16 presidential election.

Addressing members of the Council during their inauguration at Government House, in Benin City, on Monday, the governor said: “our goal is to ensure that 90 per cent of votes to be cast is for President Buhari.”

The governor, who chairs the campaign council, said that he has decided to take the campaign for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election personally, adding that the president would be in the state on Thursday for his presidential campaign while the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo will be in the state on Saturday.

He urged members of the council to increase the ratio of voters’ participation to above 50 per cent in the forthcoming presidential election to provide over one million votes for the President.

Obaseki said some of the accomplishments of his administration were made possible by the massive support from the Presidency, noting, “The president has helped in the area of subsidising state loans including that of Edo State which has made it easy for the state through the Paris Funds to address salary arrears payment. The state has been able to clear pension arrears both at the state and local government levels. The Benin River Port project would be one of the projects to be funded under the China Roads and Belt policy, all thanks to President Muhammadu Buhari.”

He urged members of the council to make the campaign a success by mobilising the electorates and focusing on the numerous achievements of Buhari’s administration.

Director General of the Campaign Council, Osarodion Ogie Esq., assured the governor that members of the campaign council would not only ensure the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari, but that of other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) vying for elective positions in the state.

While at Ogunwehi Community, a community leader, Hon. Alexander Oseyi, commended Governor Obaseki for the project, and explained that it will provide access to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Computer-Based Centre in the community.

With the resumption of work after the holidays, contractors are mobilising their men and equipment to other sites across the state, where over 140 roads are being reconstructed.

… GSTC set to reopen in September with 1,500 students

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has asked the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to restore power supply to consumers in the state or risk shutdown of its offices in the state.

The governor gave the ultimatum as he concluded the ward-to-ward campaign in Egor Local Government Area, where he urged voters in the area to support candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general elections.

At Ward 9, the governor said N500 million has been set aside in the 2019 budget to construct an entertainment park and waterworks, urging residents in the ward to support APC candidates to represent them at the state and federal levels.

He said: “We have awarded the contracts for the repair of the failed portions of Okhoro Road and the contractor who went on holiday has resumed work with the promise to start work next week.”

The governor decried how the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has continued to frustrate his efforts to ensure the people of the state get stable electricity to power their businesses, noting, “BEDC has continued to put us in darkness in the state and we will give them seven days to restore electricity or else we will shut their office down in the state.”

He described Ward 10 as a special ward that has several federal and state institutions, and said that his administration has completed the design of Technical College Road and the contract awarded.

“I have also asked the contractor to rehabilitate Adolor College Road and in two weeks’ time, contractors will commence work,” he assured.

The governor noted that the rehabilitation work on Adolor College Road has become important because over N300 million has been spent so far in revamping the Government Science Technical College (GSTC) which will be reopened for academic activities in September 2019 with 1,500 students.

“Due to the work we are doing at the College, the Minister of Power has promised to give us a direct line from Ihovbor Power Plant to help light up the state. Officials of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) are already in the state preparing the ground to bring power and to enable the people enjoy 24/7 electricity,” he added.

At Ward 6, he assured the electorates that the contractor handling the Textile Mill Road project is set to return to site.

“In the next few weeks, work will commence on the road; the contractor will come to site. I am here to tell you that this year’s election will be different. We want to do it unit-by-unit because votes are cast at the unit level.

At Ward 8, Obaseki urged the youths to take advantage of their proximity to the GSTC, enrol for programmes in the school and learn technical skills, which will equip them to become self-reliant.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has led other members of the state’s Executive Council to felicitate with Maj. Gen. Godwin Osagie Abbe (Rtd.) as he celebrates his 70th birthday.

In a sermon titled ‘The Grace of God’ drawn from the Bible book, 1st Corinthians 15:10, delivered at the thanksgiving service to mark the birthday, at the United Baptist Mission in Benin City, Primate of the United Baptist Mission of Nigeria, Rt. Rev. Dr. Osama Usuanlele described the retired Army General as a man that has been guided by God's grace throughout his life.

The Primate added that Maj. Gen. Abbe is full of human kindness and has not misused power to oppress the downtrodden, noting, “He is dependable, a good and selfless man who touches lives. He loves God and has done so much for the body of Christ. I urge you to continue in the Lord as you celebrate 70 years today, may God add more years to your age to enable you to do more for humanity.”

Rt. Rev. Usuanlele commended governor Obaseki for finding time out of his busy schedule to felicitate with the celebrant. He extolled the leadership style of Obaseki who he described as a servant governor.

He noted that the governor has used power with purpose and has continued to impact on the lives of Edo people through various developmental projects that have impacted positively on the people and contributed to the development of the state.

Abbe, who was enlisted into the Nigerian Army in 1967, was military governor of Rivers and Akwa Ibom states. He served as Minister of Interior and Defence and Chairman of the Amnesty Planning Committee under the late President Umaru Yar'adua Administration.
