The Human Right Writers Association (HURIWA) of Nigeria, a pro-poor non-governmental organisation has condenmed the Federal Government for accepting a fresh loan of N348 billion ($3 billion) from the World Bank.

According to Financial Standard newspper, the association said the move is tantamount to a second colonization and mortgaging of nigeria's future to the apron strings of the Bretton Woods institution.

@cola, I assume you did not check the link supplied by the original poster, if you did, you'D have noticed that ''invitation for questioning'' wasn't mentioned anywhere . Our responses here are based on the word ''Arrest'', hence, your heap of insults and name calling should be directed at the media and not people who are merely responding to things that they read. In future, I suggest you take more time to read and digest before you spew insults.

Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, has been arrested by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,EFCC, over her role in the controversial N100million fundraiser, which she and her group claimed was meant to support the candidacy of Barack Obama, US Democratic presidential hopeful.

Onyiuke was arrested in Abuja today, following a petition written to the EFCC by the authorities of the SEC. She is currently under the custody of the EFCC.

Miss,the fact remains that some of posts here have been simply idiotic and I'm sure you are one of those guilty of such posts otherwise you wouldn't be so touchy about the above critiques.
Even if the person who started the post used the word "arrest",I believe that as educated folks we ought to do some research on the matter before posting riotious comments on the matter and this includes those that try to defend her and those that want to execute her.
My point is,let us not scandalise an issue without finding out the true position.In other words, was she really arrested or was it just an invitation to profer an explanation?
On the issue of who sounds idiotic and who does not,I think our individual posts clearly show the depth of our intellect.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has seized the passport of the Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Prof. Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke.

The action came barely 48 hours after the commission quizzed her for her role in the fundraiser by a group, ‘Africa for Obama’, in support of the presidential ambition of Senator Barack Obama of the Democratic Party in the United States.

The group reportedly raised about N100m during its dinner/concert in Lagos on August 11, 2008.

A source told one of our correspondents in Abuja that Okereke-Onyiuke’s passport was seized to prevent her from travelling abroad without the knowledge of the anti-graft body.

It was gathered that the travel document was collected from her on Thursday when she reported at the Abuja headquarters of the EFCC as requested on Wednesday.

Our source said, “ When she honoured our invitation on Wednesday, she was interrogated by our team and she has written a statement. We have collected her international passport from her. But I don’t know if she would go home today(Thursday).”

The commission’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Babafemi, confirmed that Okereke-Onyiuke was at the commission’s office on Thursday.

THE PUNCH had on Tuesday exclusively reported that the Obama campaign organisation had distanced itself from the fundraiser by ‘Africa for Obama.’

On August 14, 2008, the Security and Exchange Commission reportedly demanded explanations from Okereke-Onyiuke, fearing that her role in ‘Africa for Obama’ was capable of affecting the country’s image abroad.

But the NSE chief had consistently maintained that the money raised by ‘Africa for Obama’ was not meant for Obama.

The British Broadcasting Corporation had in its report on Thursday quoted her as saying, “We never said we were going to donate money for the campaign.

“We paid for the hall and the entertainers and the surplus we said would be spent on advertisements aimed at persuading Nigerians to tell their relatives in America to register to vote.

“There is not one Nigerian who doesn’t have a relative or friend in America. Our aim was to encourage those people to tell their families who have the right to vote in America to vote for Obama.”

She added that the accountant for Africa for Obama had not finished counting the proceeds of the dinner/concert.

However, in newspaper advertorials on Thursday, the President of NSE, Mr. Oba Otudeko, said Okereke-Onyiuke’s action was in order.

According to him, individuals and institutions are free to express their opinions on any issue in whatever manner considered fit.

Otudeko said, “The Nigerian Stock Exchange does not get involved in partisan politics and no member of its staff is allowed to be registered card-carrying member of any political association.

“However, as private citizens they are at liberty to spend their time and financial resources as deem necessary.”

Also in Abuja, the US said that the Speaking Tour of Nigeria by its former Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Walter Carrington, was neither a campaign for Obama nor the Republican Party presidential candidate, Mr. John McCain.

The clarification was made at a joint news conference on Thursday by the US Embassy and the Ken Nnamani Leadership Centre for Development on Thursday in Abuja.

The Embassy’s Counsellor for Public Affairs, Ms. Atim Enaida George, said the US would not support any tour that was partisan.

Carrington will speak on the US electoral process and domestic politics in Abuja on August 28.

According to Atim, Carrington‘s lecture will focus on the US electoral process with the view to sharing his experiences with Nigerians.

On the fundraiser by Africa for Obama, Atim said she would not make any comment on it.

Also speaking at the event, the Executive Director of Nnamani Centre, Ambassador Joseph Ayalogu, said there would be a lot to gain from Carrington’s speaking tour of Nigeria.

He said, ”We want to learn from others, and you will agree with me that Carrington has a lot of experiences with Nigeria, having being an ambassador here in Nigeria.

”We watched the primaries and we saw how their electoral system works, that‘s how they do their things, and I hope that we could get some lessons from this at the end of the day.”

Meanwhile, the Conference of Nigerian Political Paries has called on the EFCC to prosecute Okereke-Onyiuke and others for raising about N5bn through Corporate Nigeria to fund former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s re-election.

“For the sake of sanitising our polity, we challenge the EFCC not to stop with the Obama scam, but to clear the Augean stable, by prosecuting Okereke-Onyiuke and her cohorts for corrupting the Nigerian electoral system through a nebulous association called Corporate Nigeria,” the CNPP said in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Osita Okechukwu.

It added, “It is our considered view that it is crime against the nation, which they nearly exported overseas. “Nigeria is yet to recover from this heinous crime, that today no electoral ward in the country can boast of electing her councillor.

“The unfortunate outcome is that, for sowing this sordid seed of discord; Okereke-Onyiuke and her cohorts were rewarded withTranscorp, NITEL, oil blocs, Hilton Hotel, Abuja, duty waivers and national honours.”

Having read through much of the posts on this thread I must say that not only am I shocked at some of the posts by supposedly educated young Nigerians but I am disappointed that the moderator of this forum has decided to do nothing about some of the inciting,foolish and idiotic write-ups posted here.

It is a shame that a bunch of so called educated young Nigerians could be so stupid and idiotic that they cannot differenciate between 'an invitation for questioning' and 'an arrest', even after one or two of the few reasonable ones on this forum has pointed out quite clearly the obvious difference.

Surely this only points to the oft repeated saying that if you want to hide anything from a black man, nay, a Nigerian you just put it in writing.

Moderator do something! You have an axe,I think you should learn to wield it when necessary.
