Politics / Enugu’s Oil Status: My Biggest Joy Is That My Successor Will Excel - Ugwuanyi by OEPHIUS(m): 9:53pm On Jan 04, 2023
Enugu’s oil producing status: My biggest joy is that my successor will excel - Gov. Ugwuanyi

…Recounts challenges in office despite successes

…Congratulates Enugu-born UTME’s second runner-up in Nigeria

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has disclosed that his biggest joy is that the recent actualisation of his administration’s struggle for Enugu to join the league of states enjoying oil producing status in Nigeria will ensure the fulfillment of his prayer that his preferred successor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, who is the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will perform better than him in office if elected.

Governor Ugwuanyi said that Enugu’s oil producing status is one of the successes of his administration that will bring immense fortunes to the socio-economic development of the state, stressing: “I’ m glad that Dr. Mbah will have a huge resources to perform better than me if elected.”

The governor added that it's a father’s prayer that his son does better than him in life.

Speaking at the EXCO Chamber of the Government House, Enugu, when he received, Master Innocent Chikelu Ugwu, a 17-year old indigene of Enugu State and student of Christ The King College, Gwagwalada, Abuja, who scored 359 points to come second in the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) in the country, Governor Ugwuanyi stated that Enugu State under his administration has continued to record milestone achievements despite the challenges it has encountered since its inception in 2015.

Master Ugwu from Umabor, Eha Alumona in Nsukka Local Government Area and the son of the former lawmaker who represented Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency, Hon. Charles Ugwu, came second in the UTME in the county with three points behind the winner of the first position from Ekiti State who scored 362 points.

Congratulating Master Ugwu for making Enugu State proud, Governor Ugwuanyi revealed that his administration has recorded feats in various spheres of development because it faithfully and deliberately entrusted the state to the hands of God, stressing that “all these good things are coming from God.”

The governor narrated that his administration came on board when the country’s economy was in recession with Enugu State receiving less than 30% of federal allocations the previous administration received, followed by the outbreak of the novel COVID-19 pandemic which brought a major setback to the entire world in terms of growth and development, the #EndSars protests and another economic recession.

Ugwuanyi who has gone down in history as the only governor of Enugu State to witness two economic recessions in five years of his administration, the #EndSars protests and COVID-19 pandemic, among others, reiterated that God has been merciful and kind to the state all through these challenges.

The governor stated that it was a great blessing that an indigene of the state came second in the UTME, informing the student (Ugwu) that it was a deserving privilege for him to be seated and honoured at the EXCO Chamber of the Government House, Enugu.

Governor Ugwuanyi pointed out that Ugwu’s feat was as a result of hard work, and urged him to continue on that path, saying: “This is a stepping stone for you. I’m convinced that you will grow from strength to strength. It shall continue to be well with you my son. What brought you here is hard work. May I, as the Governor of Enugu State congratulate you. The state government will reward you accordingly.”

Introducing the UTME second runner-up to Governor Ugwuanyi, his father, Hon. Ugwu, said that members of his family were grateful that the governor granted them audience and was impressed with the performance of their son in the national examination.

In his goodwill message, the Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, Nnanyelugo Chidi Aroh, attributed the feat achieved by Master Ugwu to the prophetic statement by Governor Ugwuanyi that “Enugu State is in the hands of God.”

Aroh said that “the young man before us has done marvelously well and has put his family’s name and that of Enugu State on the national map.”

He urged Governor Ugwuanyi to remain committed to his covenant with God by entrusting the state to His hands, saying: “Your Excellency, it is our wish that in the rest of your days as the Governor of Enugu State, God will everyday show you the manifestation that He is a covenant-keeping God.”

Dignitaries at the event include the lawmaker representing Nsukka East Constituency, Rt. Hon. Dr. Chinedu Nwamba, the Executive Secretary, Enugu State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Barr. Nestor Ezeme, Special Adviser to the Governor, Hon. Barr. Cosmas Ugwueze, the PDP candidate for Nsukka East Constituency, Barr. Mrs. Christiana Onah, General Godwin Ugwuoke (Retd.), Prof. Damian Opata, Hon. Ugwu's wife, Chioma, among others.

Enugu Development Partners, beneficiaries, others hail Gov. Ugwuanyi on active participation in projects implementation

…Declare support for PDP, its candidates in the state at the polls

…As PDP guber candidate promises to continue with programmes

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi's administration’s support and active collaboration in the execution of Development Partner Assisted Projects in Enugu State have received commendation as leaders and members of the “Development Partners’ Family” operating in the state and their beneficiaries, trooped out en masse to the Government House, Enugu, to thank the governor for being behind the success story of their projects/programmes.

Also in the train to the Government House, Enugu, on a Thank- you/solidarity visit were the contractors/consultants, Community Interest Groups and Service Providers.

The Development Partners’ Family said that they are satisfied and impressed that Governor Ugwuanyi’s administration in keeping with its policy thrust leveraged and maximised the assistance of many Development Partners to make positive changes in the socio-economic development of Enugu State, especially in the rural areas.

They added that, besides leveraging the Development Partners' interventions, the remarkable achievements recorded were predicated on Governor Ugwuanyi's administration’s cardinal policy of institutionalisation of transparency, accountability, traceability and strict adherence to due process.

Speaking at the colourful and well-attended event, the Coordinating Officer of the Development Partners Project Implementation Units in Enugu State, Hon. Uche Fidelis Nnadi, said that Governor Ugwuanyi’s dedicated attention, aided by the establishment of the State Focal Office for Development Partner Assisted Projects/Programmes, has reduced to its barest minimum, the hitherto operational and financial impunities in the sector.

Commending Governor Ugwuanyi for his steadfastness and immeasurable support, Hon. Nnadi expressed optimism that the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, who was present at the event, will take the governor’s efforts “a notch further towards the attainment of the desired objective by attracting and sustaining many more Development Partner Assisted Projects/Programmes, and effectively managing their operations transparently and accountably.”

Presenting their scorecards separately, the Project/Programme Heads endorsed and applauded the active participation of Governor Ugwuanyi’s administration towards the actualisation of their set objectives in Enugu State.

Enumerating the achievements of the Agro Processing Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS), the Acting Project Coordinator, Ihuoma Eze, revealed that Governor Ugwuanyi's administration’s partnership with APPEALS has increased productivity.

Eze revealed that 1,700 beneficiaries, comprising women, youths and people with disabilities (PWDs) have been able to start businesses in agriculture in five value chain (cashew, poultry, rice, aquaculture and cassava) focusing on production, processing and marketing.

The APPEALS Project Coordinator expressed gratitude to Governor Ugwuanyi that out of the 1,700 beneficiaries, 85 of them are people with disabilities, saying: “They are all here. We are currently constructing two additional cottage community centres. We have assembled agric inputs for high economic value for our farmers and this construction is at an advanced stage.

“Your Excellency, through you, we have been able to award contract for construction of farm access roads in nine locations of the state that will help famers to transport their produce to processing and marketing centres.

“These feats too numerous to mention, have the full support of Governor Ugwuanyi and that is why we are here to say a very big thank you. We are also thanking you for the counterpart funding which you made available for the projects. It did not only help us in our executions, it also helped us to stand with our peers.

“We pledge our unflinching and unalloyed support to this administration and the incoming administration. We are going to support the PDP come 2023 elections.”

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries of the APPEALS programme, Precious Chinaza Obioma Ekpere, who is one of the persons with disabilities, thanked Governor Ugwuanyi in a special way for the empowerment, stressing that “what you have done for the community of persons with disabilities especially all the women and youths is unforgettable.”

On his part, the Project Head of Rural Access and Mobility Projects (RAMP2), Chinedu James Ugwu, represented by Celestine Akwuwa, stated that RAMP2 under Governor Ugwuanyi’s administration has constructed over 418 km of rural roads across the 17 local government areas of the state, asphalted about 49.108km of roads and built culverts and bridges across 23 river crossings in the state.

On water project, Engr. Charles Eze, Project Coordinator of National Urban Water Sector Reform Project (NUWSRP) highlighted Governor Ugwuanyi"s administration’s achievements in the sector, announcing that the state government effectively paid the counterpart funds for the AFD support to 3rd National Urban Water Sector Reform Project which enabled smooth running of the project in the state.

He revealed that “the project is a 50m dollars project and only the first tranche of the sum of 3m Euro has been released.”

In their separate speeches, other Development Partners Project Heads, namely NEWMAP, SOCU, IFAD, CLVA, ENSPHCDA, etc, spoke in the same vein and highlighted the governor’s key achievements in their thematic areas.

On their part, the traditional rulers at the event said they are all witnesses to the state government-Development Partners’ jointed projects and programmes in their various communities, and thanked Governor Ugwuanyi for making them possible.

Also speaking at the event, the governorship candidate of the PDP in Enugu State, Barr. Mbah expressed excitement with the event describing it as an affirmation of Governor Ugwuanyi’s vision, mission and focused administration in the state.

Dr. Mbah added that it is also an affirmation of the continuity of the same business-friendly environment the governor’s administration has provided for the people of Enugu State.

The PDP guber candidate commended Governor Ugwuanyi for his outstanding stewardship and rewarding partnership with the World Bank and promised to continue with the programmes, if elected as governor.

"I understand what it takes to partner with the World Bank and Development Agencies because transparency is one critical issue that will be required. The partnership also requires synergy of all parties to keep their own part of the bargain," he said.

In his response, Governor Ugwuanyi appreciated members of the Development Partner Assisted Projects Family in Enugu State for the successes the projects and programmes have recorded in the state under his administration.

The governor expressed delight that Dr. Mbah, who he desires to take over the mantle of leadership of the state, has promised to continue with the World Bank projects/programmes if elected.

Politics / Eha Amufu Crisis: Ugwuanyi’s Remarkable Interventions, Challenges by OEPHIUS(m): 7:28am On Dec 28, 2022
I was miffed, if not disenchanted, at the way a section of the media has been muddling the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate crisis between the Fulani herders operating from Benue State axis and farmers from communities in Eha Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Reports have it that the disputes, which have left people from the both parties dead started over 15 years ago prior to the inception of the present regimes in Enugu and Benue states and have been lingering because of dangerous politics, disunity and lack of defined leadership among the people of the affected four communities in Eha Amufu, Mgbuji, Agu-Amede, Umujiovu and Ebor, which have boundaries with the Agala community in Benue State.

This was recently confirmed by the Eha Amufu stakeholders during an emergency security meeting with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State.

This insincerity of purpose has been frustrating the concerted efforts of the Enugu State governor, Ugwuanyi, in decisively tackling the challenges in Eha Amufu.

It was reported in the national dailies that the majority of the Eha Amufu stakeholders who spoke at the meeting had blamed leadership gaps, division, dangerous politics being played among their people and an attempt by some Fulani herders to “acquire, annex and intimidate the people to occupy their land” as responsible for the killings in the area.

The Eha Amufu stakeholders, according to the reports in the national dailies, also alleged that the Fulani herders had always collaborated with some Benue people to attack their communities to acquire spaces to settle down.

There was also accusation and counter-accusation among the stakeholders over the allegation that some persons from Mgbuji community, years back, sold a part of the village land to Fulani herders who reside with them, which some factions among the villagers are resisting.

It was revealed at the meeting that while the land was purportedly sold to the herders, another group organized themselves and were logging the economic trees in the village for personal monetary gains. Claims were made that about N50 million realised from the sale of the economic trees, which belonged to the community, was misappropriated. The factional group used part of the contentious money to buy over some youths to protect them and their business and political interests.

As reported in Thisday newspaper of December 22, 2022, page 42, “In their separate responses (at the said meeting) Bishop Olinya (Bishop of Eha Amufu Diocese, Anglican Communion), among others, said one of the problems fueling the crisis was the absence of clear cut leadership in the town and politicisation of issues by politicians.”

Also during the meeting, some of the stakeholders were frank to the extent that they accepted that they have failed God and Governor Ugwuanyi by their people’s inability to comply with various resolution mechanisms fashioned out at various peace meetings in the state, requesting that the community should go and apologise to the governor for failing him and the state.

One strange act that has left many in grave suspense is the fact that this is the first time it would be alleged that Benue people are aiding or joining forces with the Fulani herders to carry out attacks on people of a neighbouring state. Benue people and Fulani herders have been engaged in cat and dog fight over the years. Benue State is having boundary issues with Enugu State in that area under attack.

Besides alleged reports that those attacks on Eha Amufu communities were reprisals, the truth must be told that both parties, Fulani herders and Eha Amufu people, have on different occasion attacked and killed each other.

It is quite unfortunate that in an ugly circumstance where a governor is working round the clock to resolve a crisis and put an end to loss of life and property, the people he is trying to protect are taking laws into their hands.

We easily fail to accept the fact that governors in Nigeria as Chief Executive Officers of their states unfortunately do not have full control over the security agencies.

Constitutionally, the security agencies are establishments of the Federal Government and consequently take final instructions from their headquarters in Abuja. In most cases, the security agencies regrettably do not act without confirmation signals from their headquarters.

We tend to forget that such bureaucratic arrangement poses a serious challenge to governors’ efforts towards realising their objective of dealing decisively with security challenges in their various states. Enugu State shares in this ugly experience.

This notwithstanding, Governor Ugwuanyi, since the inception of his administration, has by all measures, placed premium on peace and security, resulting in the enviable status Enugu has enjoyed as one of the most peaceful and safest states in the country. It is on record that the governor through his administration has never abandoned his obligation of providing security for the people of Enugu State. He has rather made several interventions in assisting and boosting the morale of security agencies in the state to effectively discharge their duties – a feat the Service Chiefs in Nigeria and other stakeholders have widely acknowledged and publicly applauded.

Only recently, the Inspector General Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba was in Enugu to inaugurate the 76 Police Mobile Force Squadron newly constructed by Governor Ugwuanyi’s administration and granted the governor all the requests he made (with Eha Amufu and other areas in mind) regarding deployment of more police personnel and equipment such as drones and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) to frontally confront and contain unrepentant criminal elements.

Reports equally had it that Governor Ugwuanyi, in the wake of the previous attack on Eha Amufu, stormed the affected communities at night, visited different forests, markets, village squares and other locations where he interacted with the indigenes to obtain first-hand information of the remote cause of the crisis with a view to addressing the lingering issues in the area decisively.

Besides being the first governor to visit Eha Amufu over the 15-year period the crisis has lingered in the area, the governor equally donated N10 million for the immediate needs of the victims, among other interventions.

In view of the above, the allegation that Governors Ugwuanyi and Ortom of Enugu and Benue states respectively are gallivanting with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State locally and internationally while armed herdsmen have launched massive war against communities in Eha Amufu is not only misleading but also untrue and a biased pronouncement lacking substance in facts and figures, and should be disregarded.

At this juncture, it is pertinent to advise leaders and stakeholders of Eha Amufu to embrace peace as being constantly preached by Governor Ugwuanyi, keep politics out of their communal issues with the herders, unite and cooperate with the state government and security agencies to end the lingering crisis in the overall interest of their people and the state.

It is also crucial at this point for leaders of the Fulani community to rein in their members who adamantly take laws into their hands and escalate the crisis, undermining the frantic efforts of Governor Ugwuanyi in addressing the issue.

The Federal Government-controlled security agencies should as a matter of urgency do everything possible, without any form of bias, to arrest the situation and deal with those taking laws into their hands by killing people and destroying property in the area.

In Ukehe, the Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, Aroh, disclosed that Governor Ugwuanyi has been supporting the widows’ empowerment programme even before he became governor, adding that the event was in line with the governor’s long-held policy of sharing with the needy and the less privileged.

Aroh revealed that the provision of Christmas gift items comprising 2,000 bags of 50kg rice, 2,000 bags of 25kg rice, 2000 bags of 10kg rice, 1,400 pieces of wrappers, 200 cartons of tomatoes, and 200 bags of salt, for the widows, was made possible because of the support that Governor Ugwuanyi has been giving him and his entire family.

Speaking in an emotion-laden voice, the Commissioner on behalf of his father, HRH Igwe Chijioke Aroh and the entire family members expressed immense gratitude to the governor for his love and kindness, stressing that “it is only God that can pay you back.”

Aroh informed Governor Ugwuanyi that the women of Ukehe, who came out en masse, asked him not to bother to come and campaign in the community as they have resolved to deliver him for senate, the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for governor, Rt. Hon. Dr. Martins Oke for House of Representatives and other candidates of the PDP in the state.

“Your Excellency, the women permitted me to say to you that they don’t want you to come for campaign here. I have told you this in private that they said that. I am also repeating it before them. They said you shouldn’t bother coming here for campaign. We will compete with your ward in Orba as to where you will get more votes.

“The promise we are giving you is that not only you; every PDP candidate in the state that is on the ballot paper is Gburuguru’s (Ugwuanyi’s) candidate. None of the candidates including you will lose an election in our place. We will deliver you; we will deliver Dr. Peter Mbah; we will deliver Dr. Martins Oke, Hon. Ezenta and others.

“Our votes will speak of what we think about you and our votes will also speak of what we think about all the PDP candidates in the state. The women have spoken to you from their hearts,” he said.

The leaders informed Governor Ugwuanyi that they have collapsed their structures in the opposition political parties for the PDP and will consequently mobilise all their teeming supporters to campaign and vote massively for the governor during the senatorial election and also give maximum support to other PDP candidates in the state.

According to Okpe, a former Labour Party leader in Lejja: “Your Excellency, all the people who accompanied me to this place are members of Labour Party but as things are today in Lejja and with the commencement of the construction of our road by your administration, we have decided to return to the PDP.

In his words, Hon. Ugwuanyi, a former leader of the APC in Lejja said: “Your Excellency, we are grateful that you remembered Lejja in road construction, and appointed our Mommy, Mrs. Favour Ugwuanyi as the Chairman of PPSMP. “These people you gave appointments have been contributing to the progress of Lejja, and I decided to move all my supporters in APC to join the PDP family to move our community forward and deliver you (Ugwuanyi) at the poll to represent Enugu North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, because you are a good product. So, we have joined the PDP family.”

He urged the Police Chief to consider the need for the establishment and equipping of a drone section, adding that it will aid the Police in combating crimes, especially those perpetrated in areas with difficult policing terrains.

“I will give you body armours and helmets; above all, I will give you one APC (Armoured Personnel Carriers). These things will be available for collection immediately after the Christmas break.

“We just established the drone section and we are battling to make it work. As soon as we have been able to establish the one in the headquarters effectively, we will see how we can decentralise and if am on this seat, Enugu will be the first place to be considered,” the Police Chief said.

Regardless, we have continued to maintain a convivial atmosphere essential for progress.

“As we round off our 2nd and last Term in office by May 2023, it is our hope that the coming year will offer a healthier environment that allows us to consolidate our dear state on the part of progress and growth, advance and transit to the next administration. We are emboldened by our unshakable faith and trust in the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob and the awesome God of David,” he said.

Concluding the presentation, Governor Ugwuanyi expressed gratitude to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi and his colleagues for their cherished cooperation and support since the inception of his administration, stressing that the state assembly has been the bedrock of his government’s equilibrium.

Rt. Hon. Ubosi commended the governor for the sacrifice and selfless efforts he made to ensure that Enugu joins the league of states enjoying oil producing status not minding the fact that “it is people that will come after you that will benefit it”.

The Speaker, therefore, assured Governor Ugwuanyi and the people of Enugu State of a thorough debating exercise and expeditious passage of the 2023 budget, stating that the members of the state House of Assembly will continue to work harmoniously with the governor to ensure that he fully actualises his lofty programmes and policies for the people of the state.

…Express gratitude to governor for his good works

Women of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka under the auspices of Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) comprising over 500 mothers in each of the 215 parishes of the diocese have thrown their weight behind Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State’s bid to represent Enugu North Senatorial District in the National Assembly in 2023 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

They said that Governor Ugwuanyi has done well in office, adding that his good works in Enugu State, particularly in Nsukka zone are unprecedented.

The Nsukka catholic women also threw their weight behind other candidates of the PDP in the state, including the governorship candidate, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, his running mate, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, and the candidate for Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency, Engr. Vita Abba.

They stated that the people of Enugu North Senatorial District, also known as Nsukka senatorial zone, have felt the positive impact of Governor Ugwuanyi’s administration, disclosing that Nsukka zone in the past never witnessed the kind of developments it enjoys today under the present government.

The women pointed out that the visit was majorly to appreciate the governor for his laudable achievements in Nsukka zone, which they said has been transformed by the governor.

Speaking when she led representatives of the CWO, Nsukka Diocese, to pay a solidarity visit to Governor Ugwuanyi at the Government House, Enugu, on Tuesday, the President of the body, Dr. Mrs. Stella Ekwueme, told the governor that the women are impressed with the numerous development projects of his administration in Nsukka zone, and expressed confidence that he will attract more projects to the zone and provide quality representation for the people if elected as a senator in 2023.

Dr. Ekwueme assured Governor Ugwuanyi of the overwhelming support and votes of the catholic women during the elections in 2023, stating: “All the projects you have done and still doing, we are seeing them; Nsukka has seen the light under your administration; Nsukka is very happy and we are now proud to say that we are from Nsukka.

“The greatest thing that gives us joy is that our son is doing well in Enugu State. The era of suppression against an Nsukka man in Enugu State is gone because of your quality and people-oriented leadership. So we thank you and we thank God for you.

“That is why when the talk of who will represent us in the senate comes up, we reflect on the saying that the devil you know is better than the angel you don’t know. And that is why we are struggling to ensure that it is our brother (Ugwuanyi) and the person we know. The person that knows how to do it, who has experience and knows where we are going. This made us to give you (Ugwuanyi) that support and we will continue to support you.”

The CWO President equally applauded Governor Ugwuanyi for his administration’s empowerment programmes and rural development projects, revealing that Nsukka people got their fair share of them.

Other speakers at the event, namely Dr. Mrs. Uche Ekwueme (CWO Vice President), Mrs. Obioma Ogbodo (Secretary), Mrs. Fidelia Mamah (Member) and Mrs. Evelyn Ogbonna (Member) all spoke in the same vein, appreciating Governor Ugwuanyi’s good works in Nsukka zone and reassured him of their unanimous endorsement of his candidature to represent Enugu North Senatorial District in the National Assembly in 2023, and that of other PDP candidates in the state.

Politics / Ugwuanyi Calls For Campaign Based On Peace, Love And Unity by OEPHIUS(m): 5:04am On Nov 29, 2022
2023: Gov. Ugwuanyi, PDP support base swells as Nsukka West, Ozalla,

Edem Ani people pledge 100 percent votes

*Governor calls for campaigns anchored on peace, love, unity

The people of Nsukka West Constituency in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, yesterday, gathered in their numbers in Nsukka town to celebrate Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for his good works in the state, Nsukka zone and the area in particular.

The Nsukka West people assured Governor Ugwuanyi of their 100 percent votes for him to represent Enugu North Senatorial District in the National Assembly in 2023.

They also pledged to vote massively for the PDP governorship candidate in Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, his running mate, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, the party’s candidate for Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Constituency, Engr. Vita Abba, the candidate for Nsukka West Constituency, Hon. Amos Amadi Agbo, and equally support other candidates of the PDP in the state.

The jubilant people of Nsukka West Constituency, comprising political leaders, stakeholders, traditional rulers, women and youths, among others, endorsed Governor Ugwuanyi and other PDP candidates in the state at a well-attended rally organised by the PDP candidate for Nsukka West Constituency, Hon. Agbo in support of Gov. Ugwuanyi’s senatorial bid.

This came as the grateful people of Ozalla, the third largest community in Igbo-Etiti LGA of the state, at a thanksgiving service/rally, unanimously declared their support for Governor Ugwuanyi and pledged to vote massively for him and other PDP candidates in the state, disclosing that the governor has liberated them from political bondage.

The Ozalla people, who conferred a chieftaincy tittle of “Oguguma 1 of Ozalla” on Governor Ugwuanyi in recognition of his administration’s unprecedented interventions in their community and recent appointment of their sons and daughter into sensitive government positions for the first in the history of the state, told the governor that “we are going to surprise you by making sure that none of the PDP candidates in Enugu State will lose one vote in any of the polling units in Ozalla community come 2023 elections.”

Similarly, the people of Edem Ani in Nsukka LGA, gave the governor a pat on the back for his good works in Enugu State in general and Nsukka zone in particular and assured him that they will deliver 100 percent votes for him and other PDP candidates.

Speaking when Governor Ugwuanyi visited the Igwe-elect of Ugwu Na Agbo, Engr. Jude Eze, at his country home, the Edem Ani people also applauded Governor Ugwuanyi for commencing construction work on Ozzi/Akpa Edem/Okpuje road, among other remarkable interventions, describing the governor as “a true brother and friend.”

They presented ‘Ofo’ to the governor as a symbol of their endorsement of his senatorial bid.

At the rally, the people of Nsukka West Constituency said that Governor Ugwuanyi has sacrificed a lot for the state to enjoy peace and good governance in spite of all the economic, security and public health challenges confronting the country since he assumed office in 2015.

The people added that they were delighted and fulfilled that Governor Ugwuanyi, who was present at the rally, kept faith with his inaugural address to equip and modernise Nsukka as a university town and the second largest town in Enugu State, stressing that Nsukka West Constituency is a major beneficiary of the governor’s milestone achievements in Nsukka zone.

Speaking, the PDP candidate for Nsukka West Constituency, Hon. Agbo, disclosed that the major reason they gathered in their numbers was to show support for the governor and ensure that he wins the forthcoming senatorial election overwhelmingly.

Hon. Agbo stated that the people of Nsukka West Constituency are delighted at the good works of the governor, stressing that the PDP-led state government has been good to them and that they have decided to continue to follow the party.

“Your Excellency, these women, youths and the elderly here have seen your good works and that of the PDP and they chose to follow you. The most surprising aspect of it all is that most of them are not from the PDP. Most of them are not registered PDP members but they said that the government of PDP is good to them and for that reason, they chose to join PDP and deliver the party 100 percent in 2023 elections.”

Thanking Governor Ugwuanyi on behalf of the people of Nsukka West Constituency, the PDP candidate for Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency, Engr. Abba maintained that even a blind man can feel and believe in what the governor has done in Nsukka zone especially in the constituency.

Engr. Abba told the governor that the crowd at the rally and the joyful expression of the people were clear indications that “all the lies that have been told to you are now known to you.”

Commending Governor Ugwuanyi for numerous ongoing development projects of his administration in communities in Nsukka, the Engr. Abba said: “Your Excellency, my people here are happy with you for so many reasons. At Nru, a lot of projects are ongoing around the community; at Okpaligbo, projects are ongoing; at Ozzi/Akpa Edem, road construction is taking place; in Lejja, Opi, Eha Alumona, roads are being constructed; most of the massive projects in the newly established State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) are completed and the remaining ones almost completed. How many should we count? Thank you so much.

“Your Excellency, God gave you to Nsukka and Nsukka knows that you are her true son. We don’t have much to say now because this is just Nsukka West House of Assembly campaign. You will still come back for the House of Representatives campaign and the senatorial campaign, and we will unveil everything.”

Welcoming Governor Ugwuanyi to the rally earlier, a group of like minds who were behind the organisation of the rally, revealed that the crowd at the event were majorly young people the governor has empowered and shown quality leadership in their various communities.

Speaking on their behalf, Barr. Foster Ugwuoke revealed that “the people here are the crowd required to give you (Ugwuanyi), Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah and Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai landslide victories come 2023 as well as other candidates of the PDP in Enugu State”.

He maintained that the crowd was grassroots-oriented “not urban guerrillas", adding that they have the capacity to deliver the governor, Dr. Mbah and other PDP candidates in Nsukka West Constituency.

Other speakers, namely, the lawmaker representing Nsukka West Constituency, Hon. Dr. Emma Ugwuerua, the Chairman of Nsukka LGA, Hon. Barr. Walter Ozioko, Member, Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), Mrs. Nkem Oloto, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor, Hon. Aniebonam Ezeugwu, the Director General, Hon. Amos Amadi Agbo Campaign Organisation, Hon. Engr. Celestine Ezechinedu, all eulogised Governor Ugwuanyi’s peace and good governance initiatives as well as his administration’s legacy projects in Nsukka zone and beyond, and reassured him of the overwhelming support and votes of the people of Nsukka West in the forthcoming elections.

Addressing the crowd, Governor Ugwuanyi expressed gratitude to them for their show of love, solidarity and support, expressing confidence that the PDP will record landslide victories at the polls.

The governor used the medium to urge all politicians in the state to imbibe the spirit of peace, love and unity while engaging in campaign, saying: “We all are brothers, all Nsukka people are related; all Enugu people are related; we all are one family.

“Today, it pleases God that I am the governor of the state; I am the father of the state; I plead that peace should reign in Enugu State in Jesus Name.

“As we campaign, do it as relations. And above all, pray always for the state; and with your prayers and support it will surely end in praise.”

Dignitaries at the rally include the PDP deputy governorship candidate, Barr. Ossai, the former Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Dan Shere, the Director General of PDP Campaign Organisation in the state, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, the PDP candidate for Nsukka East Constituency, Barr. Mrs. Christiana Onah, among others.

On their part, the emotional people of Ozalla community describing Governor Ugwuanyi as a jinx breaker, reiterated that he wiped away their tears and put an end to the neglect they suffered for decades.

Welcoming Governor Ugwuanyi, the President General (PG) of Ozalla General Assembly, Dr. Ndubuisi Okwor-Igwe, stated that “today is a memorable day in the history of Ozalla as this is the first time we are seeing a governor in Ozalla.”

Dr. Okwor-Igwe said that the day was “a time to celebrate the man who did the earthwork and drainages on Ozalla-Ohodo road, Ozalla-Aku road, Ozalla-Ohebe road and Ozalla-Lejja road.

“It is a time to celebrate the man who renovated Central School Ozalla, Community Primary School Ozalla, Migrant Farmers’ School Nnaru Ozalla, Akaibite Primary School Ozalla, and Ijoh Primary School Ozalla; the man who constructed classroom blocks and an examination hall in Community Secondary School Ozalla, and established Ujoma Technical College, Ozalla.

“I have not also forgotten that I am not only the first Administrator of the Igbo-Etiti North Development Centre, but also the only Administrator in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area that is serving his second term. His Excellency alone made all these possible.”

Corroborating the PG’s remarks, Barr. Awuka, lauded the governor’s display of exemplary leadership qualities by involving the community in the choice of those who were recently appointed into government positions, stating that it was a rare privilege they will not take for granted.

Education / 18th Convocation: Ugwuanyi Charges ESUT On Reinvention Of Its Founding Objective by OEPHIUS(m): 1:23pm On Nov 28, 2022
…Congratulates graduands, Hon. Justice Nweze, Obi Cubana, other recipients of varsity’s honorary degrees

…Commends ESUT new Vice Chancellor for rekindling hope, breaking five-year jinx of convocation

…As Pro-Chancellor, Bishop Onah, hails governor on funding, staff welfare

*Ugwuanyi’s non-interference proof of his quests for objectivity, level playing ground devoid of bias, nepotism - VC

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has harped on the need for Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) to re-invent and re-commit to its founding objective to engender development and transform the financial standing of the institution as a citadel of knowledge founded to drive global science and technology projects.

Governor Ugwuanyi pointed out that the founding objective of ESUT which appeared realisable at the early stages of the University’s existence, when it earned accolades for fabrication of motor pistons, mace, computer panels and solar panels, seemed relegated subsequently.

Speaking at the 18th convocation ceremony of the University, on Saturday, Governor Ugwuanyi stated that in view of the alarming disparity in the cost of university education between public and private universities, inadequacy of government funding of public universities, and other challenges, the public universities that would survive and remain competitive are those that strategically explore and leverage alternative funding opportunities through research grants and earnings as well as economically rewarding projects and partnerships.

The governor, therefore, advised that “ESUT, being a science and technology university should deploy her intellectual resources to fuel research and creativity and ultimately drive innovation of products and services,” stating that “this would attract huge income through patents and royalties to the University and complement government funding.”

Stressing that the power of technology and its propensity for revenue earning are phenomenal, Governor Ugwuanyi maintained that for ESUT to achieve the founding objective, the University curriculum must be functional and tailored to the true societal needs, assuring the institution of the support of the state government in this paradigm shift through enabling policy and legal frameworks.

According to him “This event is also an occasion to remind the leadership of ESUT that the world, including Nigeria, is going through one of the most difficult economic eras. This, in concomitance with the rising cost of education, has put the funding of universities in jeopardy.

“Furthermore, the capacity of parents/guardians to respond to the ever-increasing need for fees’ hike in public universities as well as the ability of government to continue to increase grants and subventions to public universities have also become inelastic.”

The governor hailed the new management of ESUT under the leadership of Prof. Aloysius-Michaels Okolie for rekindling hope, and for breaking the five-year jinx of convocation in the institution “by today’s event, the last ESUT convocation being in the year 2016.”

He expressed hope that the University would henceforth conduct annual and timeous convocation ceremonies.

Governor Ugwuanyi congratulated all the graduands of ESUT on their deserving degrees and rejoiced with parents/guardians who toiled and sacrificed to afford their children/wards the priceless gift of education and the most veritable equipment for life journey.

The governor also congratulated and appreciated the recipients of honorary degrees “for impacting the world on a scale and scope that earned you this outstanding recognition.”

He said that their individual track record speaks to their superlative performance in their different fields of endeavour, adding that “today’s award of honorary degree is not an end but a tonic to do more and an impetus to be part of making the world a better place.”

The awardees were Hon. Justice Chima Centus Nweze of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, who received Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa), the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Cubana Group, Chief Obinna Iyiegbu (Obi Cubana) who was awarded Doctor of Business Administration (Honoris Causa), and Mr. Michael Ikebudu of Human Resources Directorate, Brunei Shell Petroleum, who was also awarded Doctor of Business Administration (Honoris Causa).

Others were the Isagba of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, Chief Dr. Jude Ndudi Ozah, Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa), Sir Ike Nwokolo, Doctor of Public Finance (Honoris Causa) and Mrs. Agatha Obiekwugo, Doctor of Business Administration (Honoris Causa).

In his address, the Pro-Chancellor of ESUT and Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, Most Rev. Prof. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah expressed gratitude to Governor Ugwuanyi who is the Visitor to the University, for “his commitment to funding and improving the condition of service of the staff of ESUT”, revealing that “through the Governing Council the governor has been faithful to his promises and the promises of the government.”

Delivering his address, the Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Prof. Okolie, welcomed and appreciated the presence of the governor at the event, pointing out that his fatherly role and wisdom have continued to direct and impact meaningfully on the growth and development of “the first University of Science and Technology in the country.”

The ESUT VC further appreciated Governor Ugwuanyi “for all his support and encouragement to keep ESUT in the global race for academic excellence”, revealing that “his (Ugwuanyi) non-interference in the administration of the university is a sufficient proof that he wants to enthrone objectivity, and level playing ground devoid of bias and nepotism in the University

Politics / Gender-Based Violence: Monica Ugwuanyi Urges Victims To Speak Out by OEPHIUS(m): 7:11am On Nov 11, 2022
…Flags off 16 days of activism in the state, LGAs, communities

The wife of Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Monica Ugochi Ugwuanyi, has decried the prevailing rate of gender-based violence (GBV) in the country, especially during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Mrs. Ugwuanyi, therefore, called on victims of the inhuman acts to always speak out and not to be intimidated by keeping quiet while the perpetrators go scot-free.

The Enugu Governor’s wife made the call during this month’s women’s prayer rally held at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, yesterday, where she flagged off a 16-day of activism to enlighten rural dwellers on the negative consequences of gender-based violence, rape and other acts of domestic abuse, as well as the need for the victims to speak out for possible assistance.

Mrs. Ugwuanyi explained that the 16 days of activism will enable the organisers to touch all the local government areas and communities in the state to further sensitise the people on gender-based violence, stressing that “no knowledge is a waste.”

She disclosed that the Nigerian governors’ wives, concerned about the increasing rate of gender-based violence in the country during the COVID-19 lockdown, which forced victims and their perpetrators to stay together, came together and prevailed on their husbands (governors) to declare a state of emergency on GBV through adequate sensitisation.

“Today, in all the states of the federation, we (governors’ wives) are going round our different communities especially those hard to reach areas to carry out this sensitisation exercise.

“That is why today (yesterday), I am flagging it off for our chairpersons, the council chairmen’s wives, so that they will start the 16 days of activism.

“We are not going to sit in Enugu and do the 16 days of activism. We are now going to do it in all the LGAs by involving all our communities and engaging their leaders; traditional rulers; all those stakeholders these perpetrators go to when the chips are down; all those who rescue them (perpetrators); and all those who are being influenced by the perpetrators and allow the perpetrators to go scot-free for them to continue perpetrating their wicked acts.

“So, we are going into the communities to sensitise our people. We have flagged it off today (yesterday) in Enugu, different local government areas will continue with the activities until the next 16 days,” Mrs. Ugwuanyi said.

In her speech, the Director, Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Ministry of Justice, Enugu State, Barr. Ngozi Catherine Ikem Okoye, thanked Mrs. Ugwuanyi for her passion and commitment to the wellbeing of the women and children of the state, especially the widows and the less privileged in the society.

Barr. Okoye prayed that the legacies and foundations the Enugu governor’s wife has laid will be sustained after her husband’s tenure ends next year.

2023: I’m committed to PDP, its candidates’ victories at the polls - Rt. Hon. Dr. Pat Asadu

*Manifesto: We are riding on Gov. Ugwuanyi’s pedestal to move Enugu’s economic goal to the next level - Dr. Mbah

Putting an end to speculations about his alleged divergent political interest, Rt. Hon. Dr. Pat Asadu, the lawmaker representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Sunday, organised a solidarity rally in support of all the candidates of the PDP and pledged to mobilise resources and galvanise his teeming supporters to ensure a landslide victory for the party at the polls come 2023.

Dr. Asadu debunked the speculations that he was working against the PDP and its candidates in the state, stating categorically that he is for the PDP “whole and entire”.

The federal lawmaker added that he has benefited immensely from the party since 1999 having served as commissioner in various ministries and spent 16 years in the Federal House of Representatives.

Speaking at the colourful and well-attended rally which was graced by the Governor of Enugu State and candidate of the PDP for Enugu North Senatorial District, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the State Chairman of the PDP, Hon. Augustine Nnamani, the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, his running mate, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, the PDP candidate for Enugu West Senatorial District, Engr. Osita Ngwu, the party’s candidate for Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency, Chief Engr. Vita Abba, those of Igbo-Eze North/Udenu and Igbo-Etiti/Uzo-Uwani federal constituencies, Hon. Engr. Simon Atigwe and Rt. Hon. Dr. Martins Oke respectively, among others, Dr. Asadu stressed that “I am committed to PDP and I will vote and work for PDP from president to councillor.”

The lawmaker thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for honouring him with his presence at the rally in spite of his tight schedule, adding that the governor was instrumental to his political ascendency in the National Assembly. He also appreciated the presence of the PDP governorship candidate, Dr. Mbah and his running mate, Barr. Ossai, expressing confidence that Dr. Mbah will be the next governor of Enugu State as “there is nobody he is contesting the election with.”

Stressing that the PDP holds all the aces in winning elections in Enugu State, Dr. Asadu stated that all the candidates of the PDP ranging from Dr. Mbah, Gov. Ugwuanyi, Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, Engr. Osita Ngwu, Engr. Abba down to the 24 flag-bearers for the House of Assembly seats will win “because you are standing on the solid rock of God and the PDP.”

Reiterating his commitment to the PDP and its victory at the polls, Dr. Asadu said: “PDP has people and I am one of them. I am thanking God for being in the PDP family.”

Also speaking, the PDP guber candidate, Dr. Mbah, applauded Dr. Asadu for keeping to his words and putting an end to the speculations about his position on the PDP, describing him as a perfect gentleman.

“What we are here today to witness is the demonstration of a perfect gentleman. A gentleman is a man who understands and who knows the value of his words. Who knows that his words are his bonds.

“We are here to put an end to the speculations. We have heard the naysayers; we have heard the traitors; we have heard the doubters who conjectured all sorts of things against our Right Honourable (Asadu).

“He is here before all of us to announce that I (Asadu) am very happy and proud to have been a PDP member in the last 23 years and nothing is farther from the truth for anybody to suggest otherwise.

“He has come here openly to say look, what have made me who I am, and what I am today is PDP and on no account will I leave the PDP.

“So, we are putting an end to the doubters, we are putting an end to those speculations today,” Dr. Mbah said.

Appreciating Gov. Ugwuanyi’s leadership prowess, penchant for peace, quality and sustainable socio-economic polices cum programmes, the PDP guber candidate told the governor that “the proposal we have presented to Ndi Enugu about the ambitious economic growth we have, we are only able to do so because of the enabling environment you have provided.”

According to him:“We cannot be talking about growth and economy or have a sustainable development if we do not have peace and security.

“We cannot be talking of growing our economy exponentially if you have not provided quality leadership and extensive infrastructure across the state in the last seven years plus. We cannot be talking about growing of our economy exponentially if we do not have peace among our civil and public servants that you strongly and full pay their emoluments. So we are very happy and proud that we are riding on the pedestal you have provided to move our state to the next level of our economic goal.”

Attributing Dr. Asadu’s solidarity rally to the demonstration of Gov. Ugwuanyi’s exemplary leadership style, Dr. Mbah maintained the demonstration has proved that Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency is now completely intact, adding that the feat will guarantee 100 percent victory for the PDP in the state.

In their separate goodwill messages, the PDP deputy governorship candidate, Barr. Ossai, the party’s candidate for Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency, Engr. Abba, Chairman of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, Hon. Vitus Okechi, former Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Dan Shere, among others, lauded Dr. Asadu for organising the rally in support of the PDP and its candidates, restating that the gossips are now over.

On his part, Gov. Ugwuanyi equally thanked Dr. Asadu for the bold initiative he took as well as his support over the years.

The governor went further to thank the stakeholders and people of the state for their unceasing prayers and support, expressing optimism that “by the special grace of God we will finish well, we will finish strong and it will end in praise.”
