Update #4: Adjusting Their Feed Mix + Clean Environment for Healthy Growth

Every new step in this OFarm Christmas Turkey journey comes with lessons - and this last week was no different.

We recently got a new batch of growers feed to begin the growers feed phase, but on checking the label, I noticed the crude protein content was 16%. Now, for foreign turkeys in their grower stage (7–16 weeks), that’s lower than ideal - they need something around 20–22% to grow well and hit market weight.

We couldn't find the perfect feed with the right CP for turkey from all feedmill/seller in our area, so instead of compromising their nutrition, we came up with a solution:

👉🏽 We decided to mix the 16% grower feed with turkey starter feed containing 27.5% crude protein.
By blending 25kg of each, I created a balanced feed mix with about 21.75% CP - just right for strong, healthy growth. We intend to seek the ready-made feed with the

Beyond feed, we also prioritized cleaning their pen and changing their wood shavings to ensure good hygiene and reduce any risk of respiratory issues or infections.

📸 I've attached 2 photos below:

1. The feed combo we’re now using (starter + grower)
2. The turkey pen after fresh cleaning and bedding

Every decision we’re making is aimed at raising big, clean, healthy turkeys that will be available for sale by Christmas 2025.

Thanks again for following along - the journey continues! 🦃

Thanks for the thoughtful observation - I really appreciate your insight. 🙏🏽

Yes, I agree foreign turkeys are often raised for 4–5 months before sale. For us, we're deliberately starting earlier so we can:

* Monitor them closely
* Grow them to a more premium size
* And better plan ahead of December rush

That said, We're aware of the weight vs. leg balance challenge, so we're taking it into account as they age - from controlled feeding to movement and supplements. We'll definitely share how we manage that in future updates.

Thanks again for contributing!

safarifarms:
Are you sure you are not starting too early? Its local turkey that people will start this early. I understand that foreign turkeys are usually sold at 4 months which should mean late August is the best time to get day olds. If you got 6 weeks old in mid June then they must have hatched in early May. From may to December will be at least 7 months plus. Hmm. Will it be profitable? Have you planned how you'll manage the weight to prevent leg brake at 6 months?

Update #3: More Foreign Turkeys Added to the Flock – Preparing for Potential Bigger Christmas Demand

It’s been a few days of consistent care and routine here at OFarm, and we’re gradually getting deeper into this 2025 Christmas turkey rearing journey.

For the past few days, the birds have been on vitamin supplements to boost their health, build their immunity, and support growth - and tomorrow 7/26/2025 marks the final day of this round. I’ve honestly enjoyed the process so much that I found myself thinking:

“If I’m doing this well already, why not raise more turkeys and meet more Christmas demand?”

So yesterday, I reached out to the same farm I got the original set of turkeys from (back when they were 6 weeks old). Luckily, they had more stock - and I went ahead to add 5 more foreign turkeys to the OFarm Turkey flock. They’re currently 7 weeks old, just like mine, so it’s a perfect match for raising them side by side.

I’ll be expanding the current space a little - working on the opposite barricade for now - and in the next few months, we’ll definitely be moving into a bigger pen to give them the room they’ll need to reach full festive size.

Every step of this journey is intentional. The goal is to rear healthy, heavy, well-fed foreign turkeys that will be available for sale during the December 2025 Christmas season.

Thanks again for following along - and if you’re already thinking about where to get your Christmas turkey this year 2025, OFarm might just be your answer.

Each 6-week-old foreign turkey cost ₦20,500 at the time of purchase.
I’m currently raising them here in Ibadan, Nigeria as part of our OFarm project, aiming for Christmas 2025 sales.

Update #2: Preparing a Better Space & Stocking Up for the Health of Our Christmas Turkeys

Yesterday marked another important step in our OFarm turkey journey toward December 2025 sales.

If you saw the first post, the turkeys were in a small, temporary holding area. That was just a starter space while we prepared something more suitable for their growth.

So yesterday, we constructed a new barricade door to create a dedicated space where these foreign turkeys will stay over the next few months. This new area is positioned right between our existing pens for layers and broilers/noilers, so it’s easier to manage feeding, monitoring, and daily care.

We also began stocking up on essential medications and supplements they’ll need throughout the journey. Some of the items we got include:

* PoxCare (for prevention)
* Antibiotics (to handle early-stage infections)
* Dewormer
* Multivitamins
* And other general health support products

We're taking proactive health management seriously, to ensure they stay in top shape and reach their full market weight in time for the Christmas turkey rush.

The journey continues - thanks for following along!

Hello Nairalanders,

I recently decided to document a personal project that we believe many people will find interesting — and possibly useful.

In mid-June 2025, we got a batch of 6-week-old foreign turkeys with a clear goal in mind: raise them well and sell them during the festive December period — when demand is high, quality is expected, and many families are looking for reliable, healthy birds to enjoy with loved ones.

I’m doing this under our farm brand called OFarm - https://ofarm.ng. While this is not our first agricultural venture, it’s our first time sharing the process this openly - from feeding routines to growth progress, care challenges, and business lessons along the way. Think of this thread as both a diary and a build-up to December sales.

I'll be updating this post weekly (sometimes more) with:

* Photos and videos of their growth
* Their feeding and health care journey
* What I’m learning along the way
* And eventually, sale info for those who’d like to buy by December.

This is both a learning curve and a business move - and I hope it’s a journey you’ll follow, support, and maybe even learn from.
