Universities notorious for postgraduate delays: Everybody gather here! Come and share your experience. Your experience will prevent someone from falling into the same pit. There's this man who shared his experience with me: he started his PhD in UNIPORT in 2018, finished it in 2024. That's 6 years for a programme of 3 years. Whose fault it's we don't know. It may be from him. But I heard this thing about UNIPORT before and I thought they have repented. Then a guy who went to OTUOKE in Bayelsa for Masters said he finished since last year December by July this year no result. Whose fault it's we don't know. If you are in these schools share your experience. Those in other schools share your experience too. You can just save someone from spending the remaining part of his life pursuing one programme. Some Universities finish their programs on record time. While others are notorious because don't allocate much time for the program. |
Anyone living in Asaba and some other cities will testify to wrong activities of landlords and tenants. For reasons known to them, majority of landlord don't put notice of vacant apartment in their house again. They connive with agents to indulge in what is in popular opinion extortion. Some of the negative extortionary activities of landlords and their agents are as follow. When you first approach the agent, he would request for registration fee. Which could be between 2000 Naira and 15000 Naira, using Asaba Delta as case study. After you pay this amount, the self-acclaimed agent will take you out on what they call inspection. Whether they know a house that is actually vacant and fits your description, it doesn't matter to them. They just take you round asking you to pay the transport. In so many cases they will not be able to show you a vacant accommodation of your description. Then when next you call them to continue with the search, they will be dodging, except they are convinced that each time you meet them, you will pay for inspection. In many cases after payment of transport round and inspection fee, they won't be able to help you find the accommodation of your specification. Landlords greed has compounded the issue. They monitor tenants progress with a view to extorting money from them through bills and other responsibilities which ordinarily should not be on tenants. More worrisome is that some of the landlords have resorted to yearly eviction of tenants. The reason is that, when a tenant is coming in the first year, the tenant pays for landlord's drink, and many other charges that can double the amount of the annual rent. The agents also add their fees which are forbidingly and indiscriminately high to the money. In a typical case in Asaba Delta, annual rent was 200000 and then charges added to it totalled 250000 Naira, bringing the total payment to 450000 Naira. Because of the extra charges for both landlords and agents, the landlords at the slightest excuse evict tenants because when the tenant will pay as renewal of the rent is smaller compared to what a new tenant would pay. The agents are very happy to hear that a tenant is about to pack. Such that even before you pack, they have started bringing in people. They even advise the landlord to increase the rent as soon as the old tenant packs out. For this reason, house is always vacant in some compounds every year as the landlord quit tenants. Agents advise landlords wrongly that their houses worth more than what they intend to give them out. If landlords set their rent at 50k per month for instance, an agent would tell him it's too cheap, that he would bring a tenant that can pay 70k. And so the landlord will give him free hand. If a tenant stumbles on a vacant apartment herself, at the point of payment, the landlord will demand for agency fee to be added to the annual rent. Another practice by some landlords is to impose agreement fee on only the tenant. This is an odious practice considering the fact that it's the landlord who demands the services of the lawyer and not a lawyer hired by the prospective tenant. The services are rendered to the landlord based on his specification. Common sense demands that he should be responsible for payment of the lawyer's charges. These malpractices are numerous and victims have more accounts. Some victims even give account of how tenants evicted once they receive visitors and how agents have duped some. The state governments should not neglect the housing issue completely to the informal operation by the landlords and their agents. Particularly in a place like Asaba where there are lot of civil servants with fixed income who at the same time need to live within the city because of proximity to their workplaces. There should be a law mandating anyone who wants to be an agent to register with the state government and there should be a document clearly defining their roles and what they should collect as fees. I want to talk about three courses which Universities abroad combined. We also have few Universities in Nigeria currently offering triple honours degree in those courses. Recently you will find people coming out to talk about studying international relations, and the liberal arts as not worth it. recently a post on Facebook by Reno Omokri even criticized doing all those courses which are not technical related. He referred to them as obsolete. But the truth is that courses like International Studies/Relations and Strategic Studies are new courses which try to train people in applying strategy to administration and making the right policies whether local or international policies. Now in a University like Dennis Osadebay University (one of the Delta State Universities) you have History, Strategic Studies and International Studies combined in one department. This is a rare combination. It is of great advantage for people who want to specailise in the following areas, Security, Ittelligence & Strategic Studies, International Economic Relations, International Politics, International Law & Organisations, diplomacy, international relations and foreign policy. All those courses mentioned are all part of the discipline. One thing that will surprise you here is the mention of international law because we have been used to law in faculties of law. But are not aware that there is a law which is domiciled in the humanities usually as a sub-discipline of international studies/relations. In Anglo-American University, Czeck Republic you have it as B. A. Undergraduate Programme; International Relations: International Law (https://www.aauni.edu/programs/undergraduate/international-relations-international-law/). In Brussels University School of Governance (BSoG) you have it as BA in International & European Law; and Arcadia University offers it as Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, Diplomacy, and Law (https://www.arcadia.edu/majors-and-programs/international-relations-diplomacy-and-law-major/). So these are new areas of studies with focus on training competent administrators for the world of governance (Local, National or International Governance). While graduates of History, Strategic and International Studies are best suited for administration/governance, they are the right answers to manpower in corporate-government relations as they are vested in policy making among others. However, this field would require advanced degree in addition to the first degree. Studying History, Strategic Studies, and International Studies individually can provide valuable insights and skills for employment opportunities. However, combining these disciplines can offer a more comprehensive understanding of global affairs and strategic decision-making and place organisations which employ services of such graduates at advantage over others with narrower specialisations. Below are more facts about the disciplines as combined honours: 1. Interdisciplinary Skills: Combining History, Strategic Studies, and International Studies helps develop interdisciplinary skills that are highly valued in today's job market. 2. Comprehensive Understanding: Students gain a comprehensive understanding of historical events, strategic decision-making, and international relations, providing a holistic perspective on global issues. 3. Policy Analysis: Students develop the ability to analyze policies and strategies from historical, strategic, and international perspectives, offering a well-rounded approach to problem-solving. 7. Conflict Resolution: Understanding historical conflicts, strategic approaches, and international interactions equips students with the skills to navigate and resolve conflicts in professional settings. 8. Global Perspective: The combined study of these fields provides a global perspective on current events, trends, and challenges, which is valuable in today's interconnected world. 9. The following is a list of Nigerian Universities with stable or likely stable academic activities 1. Delta State University, Abraka - Website: https://www.delsu.edu.ng. This University has high standard and has maintained stable academic calendar over the years. If you attend this school, you are sure of graduating on record time. 2. Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba, Delta State - Website: https://www.dou.edu.ng. This school took off with UNILAG standard. With renowned scholars and distinguished professors as lecturers, an international Hollywood type of film and leisure park just opposite it and serene environment in the capital city of Asaba, this University has actually hit the ground running as the best place for learning as well as overseas connections. With the current standard of this new University, it will no time take the lead in terms of academic excellence and even social life. 3. University of Delta, Agbor- website: https://unidel.edu.ng 4. Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro - website: https://dsust.edu.ng 5. Ignatius Ajuru University Of Education - website: https://www.iauoe.edu.ng Also all private universities have stable academic calendar. But it is preferable to attend a government owned institutions. Please, if you know of any other government owned University that has a high standard and does not go on strike post it here to help JAMBITEs and Nigerians seeking postgraduate admission in order to avoid the pitfalls of having automatic extension which they do not bargain for. |
This type of impunous statement has been repeated by the ruling party since the past 20 years they seized power. With this impunous bravado and disregard for the people, they have recycled themselves, from friends to friends, father to sons and daughters, niece to cousin to nephew, nephew to uncle; while public service suffers, embargo on employment continues, industries and factories established before their emergence fold up and none of real economic value establish. While millions of Deltans graduate every year for the past eight years, no free and fair recruitment is going on in their home state. To say it is the turn of one Delta North, is to say : 1) the state is not one 2) the part that will hold power has ulterior motive of favouring its own people instead of holding state authority on behalf of all Deltans 3.) that even if a candidate from another part of the state wins, it will be rigged in favour of the one perceived to come from the part whose turn it is 4.)that merit doesn't matter provided you are from the part whose turn it is. Again, it is sheer undemocratic arrogance to talk about eight years in office. The tenure, of a governor is 4 years. It is only in a case of exceptional performance that you talk about returning this person and party to power. What extraordinary performance can you attribute to the present regime, that should make it merit another tenure? Is coming from Delta north an indicator of good performance? People are suffocating already, you still want to suffocate them the more. You don't care. All you think about is occupy the office. Degrees and skills are wasting. Let the people's votes decide who gets power. Do not tell us there is no vacancy in Asaba. It is compulsory to change the party and the governor of a state every four years except there is unusual performance by the incumbent government. Since there is no unusual performance like increase in employment, contracts, merit in state government empowerment programme, building of new industries, electricity supply, etc, there is vacancy in Asaba now, which we the electorate have to vote to fill, come March 2nd 2019. Anybody who refuses to come out to vote or whose brother or sister is part of the government and as a result sympathetic to it, is one of the causes of the problem of the state. I see no reason why unemployed graduate, or a workman who has been idle for the past four years should carry his PVC and vote back this government or sit at home on election day. If all unemployed people should vote, this government cannot return to power. |
Fake and Credible Scientific Journals Academic Journals publishing, took a new dimension some decades ago. Rather than readers paying to read scholarly articles as was the case when there were only subscription based journals like Elsevier, a revolutionary shift which sees aggressive Open Access publishing occurred. The open access publishing among other things makes students and researchers who cannot afford the cost of subscription have access to quality journal articles; and gives exposure and adequate publicity to research results. Educational and academic growth was therefore rapidly expanded with the cost of publishing reduced by competition. However, there is a growing threat to this intellectual revolution. This is in two dimensions. The first is the publishing of articles without proper peer review. The Second is the call by some institutions to the academia to publish on only open access journals indexed in Scopus or Thomson Reuters or any other fake middle body between the academic community and the publisher. The first threat exists because, academics have not proffered proper solution. Having researched extensively on the topic of academic publishing, I realised that, the solution to predatory publishing is not being indexed in Scopus and Thomson Reuters or the others which are too fake to be mentioned here. How can Scopus managed by a subscription based publisher, Elsevier, be an unbiased umpire in matters of open access publishing? Why then do they charge for listing journals? How can Thomson Reuters be a fair judge of what constitute quality in the dynamic world of publishing? What strategies would these indexing services use to check malpractice in publishing by a journal already listed? These questions are begging for answers. The only reliable indexing services based on my research are those offered by DOAJ.Why? Because I did not find any journal they publish, they are non profit, they list journals free. It is not surprising that many indexing bodies are springing up. The emergence of open access journals must have dealt a deadly blow to the profit margins of the subscription based journals. They must now charge open access publishing or condemn them to dwarf their growth. I read crossrefence criteria for DOI, apart from annual fee, each article stored with them will be paid for. This cost has the capacity of pushing up the cost of open access publishing. And who will bear the cost? The academia. Without mixing words, the only things needed to make a journal reputable are: 1. ISSN 2. EDITORS. Then perhaps listing in DOAJ. Every other thing is rubbish. Any institution that makes Thomson Reuters, Scopus, EBISCO, CROSS REFERENCE criteria for considering credibility of a journal is actually discouraging research and research publication. The only way to know if a journal is credible is to check its editorial board and verify its ISSN. A credible journal must list its editors and their affiliations. If the affilition or contact of journal editor is not listed on the homepage for any reason, betore you publish contact the journal to confirm identity of its editor or enter the name of editor (listed on the journal) on google search engine to find out who he is. The editor of journal should take the blame for predatory publishing. If an editor notices malpractice on the part of publisher, he should publicly denounce the journal before the academic community denounces him. It is by refusing to publish in a journal without verifiable editor and holding the editor responsible for unethical publshing that will can uphold the glory of quality publishing. Let there be academic and publishing freedom, OPEN ACESS! John Chris. |

It looks like the voices shouting down the truth that that fellow expressed are very many. They are even insulting him for daring to voice the truth, those agents of saboteurs: the economic and educational savages who join forces with those who perpetually discourage academic prowess, hard work, and promote hegemonic oligarchy, plunging the young state of Nigeria into an intractable economic jam and concomitant quagmire, which now they blame on APC government. Those who constantly apply favouritism and cronyism in recruitment are not spared when the economy is submerged by their illicit and indecent desire to stay recognised. As you shun honest and competent services, because you are only after the pay that you will get at the end of the month be prepared to use the monthly pay in servicing the following results of your greed, you and your cohorts, who are discouraging hard work and promoting violence by your actions, omissions and commissions: Epileptic power supply and high bills Frequent repairs of your generators by quacks Purchase of fake cars and fake motor parts, driving through fake roads Parking in a fake motor park and extortion by fake tax collectors called agboro Buying fake foodstuff, eating fake food, fake roads, fake drinks, fake clothes, fake tax collectors, fake everything: or are you so stupid that you do not know that everything has become fake in the society? Are you all so dumb, that you do not know that the only original thing remaining before the emergence of APC, was violence? Even those of you who are ready to pour stinking waters of abuse over that fellow for telling you that the dpr recruitment like many others is fake will not be spared by result of getting the wrong person to do the job because you know him. Are you not buying things from the street? What you pay for as original is but fake after all. Because the producers are fake. You cannot give what you do not have. Those who fake the system today, would not have been where they are, if the system was fake before they got there. They are talking about restructuring. Even those who ran the country aground, now realise, that Nigeria should be restructured. For 8 years and 16 years; they did not know they have to restructure. Now that we have gotten APC to heal us of the socio-economic headache they caused us, they would not allow us time to swallow it and the healing to take place, they want to sabotage because they hate MERIT. Until merit overthrows oligarchic violence, fake, it appears to me, will reign in our streets and offices! Continue to abuse those who dare to say the truth. It won’t exenorate you. |

House is there anyone who wrote the interview on Saturday? We did not write in Benin. Has anybody idea of the new date? |
This is the list of shortlisted candidates released by the Delta State Civil Service Commission. There are questions begging for answers regarding this list. What is the criteria used in selecting this people? There are people who studied this same course with me whose names are on the list but mine is not there. Is this list meant to be an alibi against accusations of not having passed through the due process in recruiting these persons or a list based on merit? I think that this list is one of the unpalatable affronts on the psychology of the average Delta State graduates. We should not allow this to continue for another four years. A new party should be tested this time around. I know that some persons understand what this list mean and are angry as am now. Thank God we can express this anger by using our votes to select a party that may care come April. It is appalling that the software the Delta State minister of education released to make registration of JSS III students who are to sit for this year Junior WAEC easy compounded the registration of the students and it brought unnecessary expenses to the schools. The software made available in Warri came with two major issues: 1. the schools are given serial numbers as code. So if you want to access another school account, you can easily do that. 2. When you have registered about twenty candidates, the names start duplicating. So, if you have registered Regina, you will see Three to four Regina with her passorts overprinting on other candidates' account. When I called them to complain, they said, it was a virus in my system. So I started afresh with another system, the same story. I fixed anti-virus on my system, the same problem. I called my colleagues who were doing it, the same story. Worst off all, the Continuous assessment scores do not display in the Deltastateoutput. All the computers we used in Warri had virus. Therefore only the systems controlled by those who supplied the software at Asaba were used for the schools. But we used the systems with Virus for WAEC offline Biometrics Capture successfully. The painful thing is that, rather than accept their shortcomings and borrow a leaf from WAEC, the Delta State Ministry of Education (department in charge of the JSS 3 registration) has shifted the blame to those who carried out the registration and may continue with the mediocre software in the next year registration. May God help us Nigerian!. |
Good evening house. All seems to be silent after July 17 when the federal civil service commission recruitment expired. Does anyone in the house know about the interview/aptitude test date for the 2014 csvc recruitment? Kindly update me. Thanks. |
