A gang of inner city, punk-ass, kids vs. aliens: not only is it an original idea but the film is a complete and total success! grin I haven't had this much fun with an alien film in a long time. Joe Cornish makes his directing depute and he scores with flying colors: he has a great sense for movie making and it shows through this film. Perhaps the best feature of this film, for me, are the creatures; they are very original and give the film a true sense of horror and terror ^^ cheesy cheesy . The young actors perform greatly and give the film its authenticity of taking place in a British housing project. If you like Sci-Fi films, I would highly recommend this film. wink

Vieira:
Attack the Block - Area boys vs Aliens

Lets clear one thing up first, I loved this film equally as a B movie lover, a Londoner and a black guy.

When this film was released there was uproar in the UK, some middle class peeps thought it condoned the wild behaviour of inner street kids, the opening scene with the heroes of the movie mugging a defenseless woman does not help.

BUT I applaud this film for avoiding the normal cliches and being brave enough to show us that people can be little sh*ts and also stand up to be counted at a later time.

People not familier with London Patois speak may struggle a bit as they for once did not dilute the language, the film throughout had these guys speaking pure street. I was okay with it but I remembered how I struggled with the TV series called the Wire when they talked pure american ghetto speak.

It is a good funny in parts and gory in others independent UK movie and I don't regret buying it rather than renting it.

Will watch it again.

The plot: Aliens land in an inner London estate and the local young hoodlums take them on. Xbox generation kids on BMX's with flick knives fighting Aliens, what is not too like?

No man feels intimidated by a woman's height. rather, they may feel 'intimidated' by your looks and countenance. you don't carry a long, rumpled, cheerless grimace and expect a guy to approach you. If no one is approaching you or asking you out even at first sight, go home, get your mirror, clean it up and take a look at your face. practice smiling often and wear a cheerful countenance. OK? hope that helps. cool cool cool cool

Yeah just to suffer his opponent he does all type of funny things even some kind of impression on his face to set confusion during fight lol cheesy cheesy --- Rumble in the Bronx is a rather typical Jackie film from the point of view that it features intense fight-scenes and equally intense comedy scenes. While the film works on a level of a "Hong Kong Action Comedy" it doesn't work quite well on all levels of production.

The neo-American feel of the film isn't completely wasted but does feel a little artificial from time to time. The intensity of the film is definitely at its best in the first two thirds but these unfortunately lead to a rather miss-mashed third act which just feels shoddy and over-the-top.

However to say the film is a complete waste would be too harsh. It is definitely recommendable to Jackie fans but far from his greatest works. cheesy cheesy wink

Princess Mononoke
One of those movies you don't see every day, month or year^^ grin . The story is simple, modest and at the same time, groundbreaking and epic for its mix of reality and fantasy (actually the premise is very similar to Nausicaa's). The characters are also very simple. However you can't help but sympathize with them, even with the antagonists, each one of them is unique, well developed and with its own fundamented and reasonable goal smiley.

The visuals are simply stunning, I will go and say: the best the 90's anime have seen. This movie will entertain you and make you think, there's a lot more to it than gods, demons, ecological messages, smooth and violent action sequences or beautiful emotional scenes. Watch how every character's action in this story can affect everyone and everything around them. wink

In the final fight with his brother, right after Brendan starts to fight back, Tommy hits the fence and looks around him ^^ cheesy cheesy The song starts playing grin.

There are tears running down his face. He looks out to the crowd and warily goes "Dad?", like he's expecting someone in his corner cheering him on like he always had been. Just like someone said, he wanted someone cheering him on despite how much he pummeled his dad. I think it's obvious in the hotel scene that he DOES love his father despite their differences and past. smiley

I do believe Paddy left the tournament not because he was hungover but because the Military Police was there, I'm sure he didn't want to be seen with Tommy when he goes down. (Considering Paddy was a Marine and for a Marine to go AWOL is bad news) wink

Yeah actors that do muscle exercise always know how to pump it high and reduce it . . . lol cheesy cheesy wink

MRbrownJAY:
yes there was a lot of very emotional parts in this flick but, for me, the one in the hotel room with the father was quite powerful and emotional. this story looks so simple but the way they pieced it together was just brilliant. this IS movie making!
the story keeps you there, at the edge of your seat, all the way through it all.
Tom Hardy was just perfect for his role!

btw i am amazed at how these actors can put on muscle mass (and subsequently lose it) so quickly!

It just goes to show how wrong you can be Obinna5000 of Nairaland dear friend ^^ cheesy cheesy . I had not expected to like this film. I was disappointed by both the Kill Bill films (although i preferred the second) and Death Proof (although it was better in the shorter cut of the double-bill release). I love Reservoir Dogs, admire Pulp Fiction and think that Jackie Brown is Tarantino's most mature piece of film-making - technically his most superior - including the last great performance elicited from Robert De Niro smiley smiley . Since then it seems to me while his films have been okay (i haven't hated them) he has been treading water in referential, reverential, self-indulgent juvenilia. wink

obinna5000:
@Ogaga4Luv of Nairaland
At least, "Inglourious Basterds" is better than "Jackie Brown".
Christoph Waltz as Col. Hans Landa was outstanding.

Voting was supposed to have ended a few days back but if I had stopped then, the decision woulda been unanimous. It's almost unanimous anyways. so Obinna5000 has won the primaries. lol. One person voted for Ogaga. So him and Obinna will now be part of a poll to determine the winner. Vote er wisely.
