Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he could be sacked if he fails to beat Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Guardiola has won five major trophies in three seasons at the Etihad, but a failure to progress beyond the quarter-finals of the Champions League has been the big disappointment of his reign.

Guardiola’s side trail Liverpool at the top of the Premier League by a mammoth 22 points this season with their campaign now set to be judged on how they fare in Europe.

I want to win the Champions League. I dream (of it) and I will enjoy preparing for the games against Madrid,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.

If we don’t beat them, OK, come the chairman of the sports director and say, ‘It’s not good enough, we want the Champions League, I’m going to sack you.

I don’t know (if this would happen). It has happened many times and could maybe happen.

Guardiola has a contract at the Etihad until the end of next season.

After four years at Barcelona and three in charge of Bayern Munich, he is expected to fulfil his deal and enter the fifth season at one club for the first time in his managerial career.

But the Catalan coach also hit back at the suggestion that the success or failure of a season should only be measured in trophies.

We give a bad, bad message for the new generation, for our kids, to just count the winner, the trophies to winning,” added Guardiola.

You say the season is a disaster but if you win the Champions League it will be exceptional. Why? It is difficult to win.

If you don’t, we can say in more than 100 years of history (there) were 100 failure seasons for Manchester City. That is not true.

Nigerians on Twitter are reacting to tweets shared by singer, Burna Boy, in which he stated that he is the best since Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, and that no one paved a way for him.

Odion Ighalo has been banned from Manchester United’s training ground over fears of a potential coronavirus risk.

Recall the Nigerian international traveled from China, though not from Wuhan where the virus originated, to the UK to seal his move from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua until the end of the season.

The former Watford striker who has been working with a personal trainer at a separate location in Manchester was instructed to train away from United’s AON Training Complex for health and safety issues.

The 30-year-old did not also travel with the United squad to a warm-weather training camp in Spain, which was down to concerns border restrictions as it would have affected his re-entry to the UK from Spain.

According to Mirror, United decided to take the precautionary decision to make Ighalo train away from the club's Carrington base over his mandated 14-day incubation period.

Explaining Ighalo's absence from the warm-weather training camp, Solskjaer said: "Odion will stay in Manchester, because since he has come from China in the last 14 days, the news of the virus there means we're not sure if he's going to be allowed back into England if he leaves the country again.

So he's staying here working with a personal coach on an individual programme and his family then can settle in England as well. That's a plus.

Of course, he might have liked to have come with the players and got to know them, but we don’t want to take that risk [of potential border restrictions tightening].

The United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already confirmed that Ighalo will travel with the squad to Stamford Bridge and is expected to make his debut against Chelsea next week.

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has promised that women will constitute between 40 and 50 per cent of his cabinet.

He also promised to prioritise road construction and rehabilitation, as well as education for the Ogun West Senatorial District as the 2020 budget is being prepared.

Roads in the senatorial district were described as the worst in the state when the governor held a town hall meeting with critical stakeholders of the senatorial district at Ilaro on Wednesday.

I want to assure you that my cabinet will have, if not 50 per cent of women, it will have at least 40 per cent. You voted for me to give you good governance and we will ensure that it cuts across every nook and cranny of the state.

The governor promised that the era of non-implementation of budget estimates was over, saying that he will ensure proper implementation of the 2020 budget when passed into law.

The governor noted that the district had been in the forefront for the socio-economic development of the state with its status as the industrial hub, increase in the number of industrial establishment and level of commercial activities.

The meeting had in attendance traditional rulers, elders and tradesmen, artisans and party stalwarts.

The leaders took turns to lament the deplorable state of intra-city and rural roads in the five local government areas of the district.

In his contribution, the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, in the last election, Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, called on the government to declare a state of emergency on roads, as it was the major challenge in the district.

Also speaking, Senator Akin Odunsi from Ado-Odo/Ota, said although Ogun West was the economic base of the state, it lacked good roads and other basic amenities.

Manchester United will try to sign one or two players in the January transfer window to improve their chances of finishing in the top four, but will not spend big on transfer fees and wages, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said.

United are 12th in the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s home game against league leaders Liverpool after a poor start to the season that has been further disrupted by injuries to key players.

Solskjaer sanctioned the departures of forwards Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez in the close season without reinforcing United’s attack and the Norwegian also has goalkeeper David De Gea and midfielder Paul Pogba out injured.

We’re looking at one or two new signings. We’re one or two players light.

If the right ones are available in January then we might do something. If not, these players will give everything (for a top-four finish).” Solskjaer said.

I’m not going to go down the route of bringing players in on big contracts and fees if they’re not the right ones for the whole group and for the future.

The money is there to strengthen in January and in the summer,” Solskjaer said.

United started the season with a 4-0 win over Chelsea but have scored five goals in seven league matches since and Solskjaer said an injury to forward Anthony Martial, who has not played since August, was a factor in their struggles.

There are many reasons, but one of them is injuries to Anthony. Creating chances has been a challenge for us with teams dropping deep.

Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Buhari has finally parted lips on the rumoured second marriage of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Speaking to BBC Hausa on Sunday, the first lady said that it was not her duty to confirm or deny the rumours. In her words;

He (Buhari) is the person rumoured to be planning a marriage, not Aisha Buhari. They (those concerned) are supposed to come out and clear the air.”

The first lady denied a rumour that she left her husband because she did not agree with his plan to take a second wife.

She called for urgent action against the menace of fake news.

It will be recalled that last Thursday, President Buhari was rumoured to get married to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq.

Speaking at one of his shows which he tweeted on Tuesday, the television host, producer, radio personality, actor, and author said his mother was bent on securing deliverance for him from whatever was his problem that she made it a point of duty to pray fire-power prayers for him.

Perhaps, not satisfied with her own intercessory pace, she also hired a handful of pastors to join her in the spiritual war.

The Senate, Tuesday asked the Federal Government to as a matter of urgency, declare a state of emergency on all the federal roads across the country because of the deplorable conditions of road networks across the country.

The Senate has also mandated its Committee on Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA, Petroleum Down Stream and National Planning to immediately carry out a holistic investigation into the non-remittance of the 5 per cent user charge pump price of petrol and international vehicle transit charge accruing to FERMA and other established state road maintenance agency.

Resolutions of the Senate were sequel to a motion by Senator Geshom Bassey, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Cross River South).

Buhari writes Senate, seeks to pay Kogi N10bn
Bassey who came under Order 42 and 52 of the Senate Standing Order as Amended, however, lamented the deplorable state of federal roads.

The Senate was concerned that several thousands of lives have been lost to road accidents due to bad and unmotorable roads, while bad portion of roads is a safe haven for kidnappers and armed robbers on Nigerian highways.

In his remarks, President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan who noted that every part of the country suffers from this problem of deplorable roads, however, expressed optimism that the committees mandated to look into the matter will swing into action and attend to the issue associated with this motion.

Meanwhile, the Senate yesterday rounded off debate on the general principles of the 2020 Appropriation Bill of N10.33 trillion presented before the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had on Tuesday presented a total budget estimate of N10.33 trillion for 2020 Fiscal year to a joint session of the National Assembly.

The Senate last week Wednesday commenced debate on the budget, just as it has adjourned plenary for two to enable heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs appear before the various Standing committees of the Senate to defend their budget proposals.

President of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan has announced that all MDAs must be present and appear to defend their budgets proposals latest Oct 29.

Lawan said this, following the second reading of the 2020 Appropriation Bill as it was immediately referred to the Senate Committee on Appropriations for further legislative inputs.

The Senate also mandated the committee to report back to plenary in two weeks time.

Lawan who noted that the window for budget defence for MDA’s would end by Oct 29, said that any MDA that fails to appear before the said date should forget about the budget defence.

He also advised the Niger Delta Development Commission(NDDC), Nigeria Communication Commission, NCC, the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, others to present their budget proposals same time with the present ones and be scrutinized this month.

According to him, failure to present the budget would amount to the non-provision of funds for them to spend for the 2020 fiscal year, just as he stressed that the Senate would no longer tolerate MDAs who spend funds without appropriation.

The President of the Senate who said that all MDAs must defend their budget before end of October said that the Senate had put November 5, as timeline for it to conclude matters relating to budget defence.

He urged all the Committee to work closely with the Appropriations committee to meet the set date, adding that it was time for National Assembly members to show that it could pass the budget before the end of the year.

Lawan who noted that revenue generation was a major issue in implementing the nation’s budget over the years, said that the Senate would continue to engage revenue generating agencies on their activities in revenue generation, adding that the agencies must periodically update the senate on their revenue generating activities.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has forwarded to the Senate, the Finance Bill 2019 for consideration and subsequent passage.

In a letter to the Senate through the President of the Senate, Buhari said that the bill seeks to enact fiscal measures supporting the 2020 budget is in pursuant to section 58 and 59 of the 1999 constitution as amended.

The Finance bill 2019 proposes incremental, but necessary changes to Nigeria taxes and fiscal laws to ensure optimal funding of 2020 budget.

According to Buhari, the finance bill has five strategic objectives to include, promotion of fiscal equity by mitigating instances of regressive taxation and reforming domestic tax laws to align with global best practice.

He said that the bill was designed to introduce the tax incentives for investments in infrastructure and capital markets.

The President said that the bill would also help support micro, small and medium size businesses in line with the ease of doing business reforms and raising revenues for government.

According to him, the finance bill proposes an increase in the Value added Tax (VAT) rate from 5 per cent to 7.5 per cent.

It was earlier reported that about 94 suspects were arrested on Sunday night after operatives of the agency raided night clubs in Osogbo and Iwo towns in the state.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibadan Zonal Office, has freed 13 of the 94 suspected Internet fraudsters arrested in Osogbo, Osun State, on Monday.

It was earlier reported that about 94 suspects were arrested on Sunday night after operatives of the agency raided night clubs in Osogbo and Iwo towns in the state.

During the raid, 19 exotic cars and over 100 phones were recovered from the suspects.

However, after preliminary investigation was conducted, the 13 persons were released.

While speaking with Channels Television, Deputy Chief Detective Superintendent of the EFCC in the state, Mr Bright Igeleke, said the latest arrests was an indication of the resolve of the commission to rid the country of economic and financial crimes.

He also confirmed that about 152 convictions had been made on Internet fraud and related offences.

Maverick entertainer and activist, Charles Oputa, popularly known as ‘Charly Boy’, is set to perform at the 2019 annual Felabration fiesta, a week-long celebration of the life and times Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the event is holding from October 14 to 20, at the New Afrika Shrine in Lagos, with both local and international artists slated to perform.

In a video shared on his social media page on Tuesday, Charly Boy said he was set to perform alongside other artists at the grand-finale of the fiesta.

According to the 68-year-old showbiz maestro, who released his debut highlife album over three decades ago and recently returned to the stage, hi-performance was in the spirit of immortalising Fela’s ideas.

The former president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria said he will present his latest songs at the show.

He said: “Make a date with me, alongside other great Nigerian artistes on Sunday, October 20, as we all gather together to give honour to whom honour is due, the legendary baba Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

Charly Boy had earlier told NAN that he has decided to use music as a tool to inspire ordinary Nigerians, especially youths, to realise that power truly belongs to them.

The panel included Ugandan singer and politician, Bobi Wine, Chimamanda Ngozi-Adichie, Prof. Wole Soyinka, and British rapper, Akala.

The first day also had electrifying performances from promising Nigerian singers, including Fuji singer, Remi Aluko, singer Dotman, Trod, Picazo Rhap and Yomi Blaize.

An early morning fire has engulfed Katangowa Market in Agbado/Okeodo Local Council Development Area, along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on Monday.

The fire outbreak which started around 3.15am destroyed the entire stretch of fairly used clothes’ shops opposite the Central Mosque in the market.

As of the time of filing this report, men of the state fire service and officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency were on the ground to put off the fire.

Also on the ground are policemen from the Okeodo Divisional Headquarters to prevent the looting of unaffected shops.
