Foreign Affairs / Canadian Sniper 'kills IS Militant Two Miles Away' by ogechooky: 10:02am On Jun 24, 2017
A sniper in the Canadian special forces shot and killed an Islamic State (IS) fighter from a distance of 2.1 miles (3,540m) in Iraq last month.
Military sources told Toronto's Globe and Mail newspaper the soldier was a member of Joint Task Force 2, and made the shot from a high-rise building.
It took the bullet almost 10 seconds to hit its target, it reports.
The Canadian Special Operations Command confirmed to the BBC the sniper "hit a target" from that distance.
The shot, which sources tell the paper was filmed, is thought to be a record for the longest confirmed kill.
The sniper worked in tandem with an observer, who helps to spot targets, and used a standard Canadian military issued McMillan TAC-50 rifle.
"The shot in question actually disrupted a Daesh [so-called Islamic State] attack on Iraqi security forces," a military source told the paper.
"Instead of dropping a bomb that could potentially kill civilians in the area, it is a very precise application of force and because it was so far away, the bad guys didn't have a clue what was happening."
The source described the difficultly of the shot, which required the shooter to account for wind, ballistics, and even the Earth's curvature.
Military experts believe the successful shot may have set a record.
The previous record was held by British sniper, Craig Harrison, who shot and killed a Taliban attacker from 2,475 metres in 2009 using an L115A3 long range rifle.
The government of Canada's Liberal Party Prime Minister Justin Trudeau halted air strikes against the so-called Islamic State in 2016 .
But at the same time, Mr Trudeau announced plans to treble the number of special forces on the ground, as well as increase the number of Canadian Armed Forces members who are tasked with training and assisting local forces.

Foreign Affairs / China Landslide Leaves At Least 140 Missing In Sichuan by ogechooky: 9:46am On Jun 24, 2017
More than 140 people are feared buried in a landslide in Sichuan province in south-western China, state media say.
About 40 homes were destroyed in Xinmo village in Maoxian county, after the side of a mountain collapsed at about 06:00 local time (22:00 GMT Friday).
Rescue teams are frantically searching for survivors trapped beneath rocks.
Pictures posted by the People's Daily newspaper show bulldozers moving earth and large boulders as the rescue effort continues.
A couple and a baby were rescued and taken to hospital after teams of workers used ropes to move large rocks while dozens of others searched the rubble, AFP news agency reports, citing local authorities.
The landslide blocked a two-kilometre (1.2-mile) stretch of a river, Xinhua news agency reports, citing local officials.
Local police told state broadcaster CCTV the landslide had been triggered by recent heavy rains in the region and that the situation was made worse by a lack of vegetation in the area.
"There are several tonnes of rock," police captain Chen Tiebo told the broadcaster, adding: "It's a seismic area here."
Roads in the county were closed on Saturday to all traffic except emergency services, the news agency said.
Landslides are a regular danger in mountainous regions of China, especially during heavy rains.
In 2008, 87,000 people were killed when an earthquake struck Wenchuan county in Sichuan province. In Maoxian county, 37 tourists were killed when their coach was buried in a landslide caused by the earthquake.

Foreign Affairs / Meet The Rival To The ‘mother Of All Bombs’ by ogechooky: 9:16pm On Apr 15, 2017
The so-called “Mother of All Bombs,” may be the biggest conventional weapon in the U.S. arsenal, but it’s not the biggest non-nuclear bomb in the world.
That title goes to Russia’s “Father of All Bombs,” which is reportedly four times heavier than the 10,300-kilogram Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB), the official name of the U.S. GBU-43/B.
FOAB is also quite a different kind of bomb. While the MOAB is conventional, the FOAB is thermobaric, meaning it uses oxygen in the atmosphere to increase the damaging effects.
According to Business Insider, the FOAB explodes in midair with a “fuel-air mixture” that, according to the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, creates an intense “pressure wave” as well as a vacuum that “ruptures the lungs.”
Even if the fuel does not ignite, it’s highly toxic and likely deadly to anyone coming into contact with it, the DIA wrote.
The blast radius of the FOAB is around 300 meters, with an explosion equivalent to 44 tons of TNT, Reuters reported.
On Thursday, the U.S. military used its MOAB for the first time on the battlefield, dropping it on tunnels in Afghanistan that were reportedly used by Islamic State terrorists.
Foreign Affairs / Tomahawk Missiles: Explaining The Weapons The US Used To Strike Syria by ogechooky: 9:37am On Apr 07, 2017
(CNN) - US President Donald Trump ordered military strikes against Syria on Thursday in retaliation for a chemical weapons attack that killed dozens of civilians, including children.
Two US warships in the eastern Mediterranean launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian government airbase, US officials said.
CNN's military analysts said the Tomahawk was a good choice for this kind of attack.
"This is what the Tomahawk was made for. It gets in there low level and hits these fixed facilities with no risk to an air crew," retired US Air Force Lt. Col. Rick Francona said.
Tomahawks are intermediate-range cruise missiles, meaning they have a range of about 800 miles (1,250 kilometers) to 1500 miles (2,500 kilometers).
They are fired from sea and travel relatively low to the ground and guided by an advanced navigation system, which means the US could target the airbase in Syria from afar.
"What's important about the Tomahawks is that they just don't necessarily go from point A to point B in a straight line. They will take kind of a circumnavigation route so they can't be shot down," retired US Army Maj. Gen. James "Spider" Marks said.
The missiles were first used by the United States in Operation Desert Storm and have been in operation ever since. The United Kingdom also has purchased Tomahawks from the United States.
The Tomahawk can be equipped with a 1,000-pound conventional warhead, the Navy says.
Though Tomahawks have the ability to carry a nuclear payload, policymakers have phased out the missiles' nuclear role, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies' Missile Defense Project.
Though Tomahawks have been in service for years, newer versions have been equipped with better communication systems, among other things.
Each unit cost about $569,000 in 1999 dollars, according to the US Navy, -- equivalent to about $832,000 today.

Saharareporters’s Publisher Omoyele Sowore Arrested, Facing Deportation

The publisher of Saharareporters, Omoyele Sowore, was this night picked up in New York City and taken to Varick Street deportation center where he is awaiting expatriation.

Trouble started for Mr. Sowore when a sheriff attempted to serve Melaye’s defamation court summons. In his effort to argue with the sheriff, New York City police were called. He was immediately picked up and taken to the detention center for processing.

Sowore is not a citizen of the United States and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), under President Donald Trump is quick to remove immigrants involved in the most minute of infractions.

At the moment Saharareporters’ lawyers are scrambling to get to the detention center to appeal against the deportation of Sowore. They will be making a case that the Nigerian authorities are after the Ondo born publisher.

Sources close to Saharareporters said that Sowore’s deportation would take place tomorrow via Arik Air to Abuja, Nigeria. There are indications that the arrest was coordinated with authorities in Nigeria and would be picked up by the DSS in Abuja as soon as he arrives.
