Now in charge of Chelsea
Football Club after his stint as
the head-coach of Italy had
come to a conclusion, yesterday
(Wednesday), was Antonio
Conte`s first day down at our
Cobham facility.
Conte, as expected, took charge of
training and put the players
through their paces.
With the media present it was an
entertaining session with Conte
pulling some of those trademark
facial expressions and
gesticulating wildly as he tried to
get his message across to the
players.
As the 2016 / 2017 season
approaches, Conte has promised
to put the players through a
succession of double sessions as
his intensive fitness programme
gets underway.
Today (Thursday) Conte held his
first meeting with the media, with
the start time scheduled for 14:00
hours. In front of a horde of
journalists from a variety of
backgrounds, Conte had this to
say in response to questions
asked, after being pictured holding
our famous home shirt for a
battery of photographers.
Firstly, on his arrival at Chelsea
and Chelsea`s chances of winning
the Premier League title Conte
replied,
'It is a great pleasure for me. I am
excited for this moment.
'This is a new chapter for my life,
for my career, for my family and I
am very happy to start working in
a fantastic new country and
fantastic league.
'The Premier League is very
difficult - the most difficult in the
world. Seven teams can win the
title.'
Continuing, Conte asked for
patience from those in attendance
due to a possible on-going but
diminishing language barrier,
commenting,
'I am studying English and I may
ask you to repeat questions...
When asked about the legend that
is JT, Conte responded,
'John Terry signed a new contract
as a player, not in a different role.
He is the captain of this team and
a great player with a great
personality. I want to speak to him
because he knows the club and
the spirit.
'When he plays he is the captain,
when he doesn't play he is the
captain. Always.'
Glad to hear that Antonio.
Moving on, Conte confirmed that
he may have had a part in the U-
turn that saw JT sign a new
contract, explaining,
'I repeat, John Terry is an
important player for me, the club
and the fans. He signed a new
contract in May and we took the
decision together. We were very
pleased and very happy he signed
a new deal. I spoke to him at
different times and he was very
happy to sign.'
And as for dealing with the
pressure that comes with
managing Chelsea, Conte
remarked,
'The pressure for me is not
important, I was born with
pressure. It's normal. You must
play to win, to win the title, to
reach your targets. This League is
difficult and this year won't be
east but this situation excites me.
We must work every day, every
week, because the fans need to
find the team ready to fight.'
As for Chelsea`s aspirations of
Champions League football after
finishing tenth last season,
Antonio added,
'Last season in 10th was a bad
season, but we must think to the
present. Chelsea belongs in the
Champions League and we must
stay there.'
And on the task that lies ahead of
him Conte further added.
'The coach is a tailor who must
make best dress for team. Three
at the back, four at the back, it is
not important.
'We have started to work on
different aspects and every
manager has their own idea of
football. I want to transfer my
idea, my methods.
This is a great challenge and is the
right moment for me to arrive in
England. I like this, I like the
challenge and to prove myself.'
And on the work ethic he has
brought with him, Conte
commented,
'I like to work and I know only the
road to winning and to take the
club back to competing in the
Champions League and winning
the title - work, work, work. I have
found the right attitude from the
players and I am very happy
about this.'
Continuing to speak on the
subject of fitness, Conte further
added,
'The Premier League is tough; it is
high intensity compared to other
tournaments. If you want to win,
you have to play attractive football
but also have good physical
condition. Usually if you have
great organisation and talent with
the players, and you run more,
you have more productivity to
win.'
And with reference to the recent
signing of Michy Batshuayi, Conte
responded,
'He is a young player but very
strong with good technique. He
uses two feet and a great talent, I
am very happy he is with us and
the club bought a great player.'
And on being labelled a super-
coach on the same status group
as Mourinho, Klopp and
Guardiola, Conte pointed out,
'It is fantastic. There are many
players with great talent in the
league but there are good
managers, too. It is a great
challenge but it is not a challenge
between managers - it is between
great teams and players.'
But with regards to possible
transfer targets, Conte mused,
'I prefer to speak to the club about
this and to take the decision about
players together. You don't need
to take just the champions, you
need to take those who can adapt
to our football and our
philosophy. It is not right to say
names because these players are
at other teams - I don't like other
managers speaking about my
players.'
And on the passion he displays on
the touchline as he encourages
his charges, Conte answered,
'I don't know if it is a good thing
but I have a great passion for my
team and players. I like to stay
with my players in training - to
play with them, to lose with them.
I have great passion and I want to
transfer that to my players and
fans.
'I suffer during the game, I want
my players and fans to see this
because we work hard during the
week and I am not happy when
we don't reach our target.'
And on leaving the Italian national
job to return to club football,
'I decided to leave the national
team because I wanted to breath
the grass and improve the players
day by day. For this reason, I
decided to go back to club
management. I had this great
opportunity to speak to Chelsea
and I am very happy we found a
fantastic solution.'
And completing what was a very
enjoyable press conference, Conte
concluded with,
'I felt very emotional about
coming here. I am very proud and
I've worked very hard. I think
Chelsea are underrated and we
can surprise people. I hope there
is a small flame flickering that can
turn into a towering inferno.'
